The irony is that the BSTU was criticized by all and sundry for the action they took during the AX Mess BUT they had the funds to pay their workers if required. The BWU and the NUPW despite its size cannot do the same. How telling.

With the level of corruption and bribery the is previlent within the government and it’s departments it is no wonder that this trivial matter has been allowed to get to this level. Your Island has an international reputation for it’s corruption and this (corruption) ges from the top leaders of your government down to any and everyone affiliated with your government.
Pay offs and bribery is the normal route for any one doing any format of business let it be the local storekeeper or anyone, expecially those from other countries, wanting to set up a business on your island. Now people wonder just why the local employees are paying the price!!!!!
But until the island goes through a complete clensing of both the political people in power and each and every government agency; until anyone taking bribes and payoffs; until each and every person who either offers bribes and payoff for services and those who except same for such is eliminated then you get just what you deserve!!!!!. -

All the trade unions with the EXCEPTION of Caswell Unity Trade union, and the government are blood suckers of the workers of Barbados.. Dennis Clarke sell out the workers for a duty free car and more.. I hope that they continue to suck more blood from the jackasses that still continue to be members of those unions. That is what they voted for.

Barbados needs about 650 public-sector workers, at best. Somebody has to fill out the forms, and somebody has to drive the buses. Somebody has to misspell all their comunications to other governments, And somebody has to be an obnoxious prick at border control. And bright teachers are often useful. Beyond that, everyone is quite literally redundant.

It was only when the USA and it’s FBI started to investigate his company that he was able to flee (After key documents mysteriously caped justice thanks to your islands paid off government officials) first to Cuba (to avoid landing in the USA where they would have arrested his ass) then to Canada where he now hides out.
For the past two years I have been looking into the actions of Canada Drugs and their owners Re:/ Tom Haughton; Kris Thorkelson; Maryanne (Haughton) Thorkelson. Different government officials have looked upon Canada Drugs and those who owned/operated it as upstanding business. They look at the multitude of monies generated for the coppers of their local treasuries without any concern for just how these monies were generated and the devastation caused through the business practices utilized in its generation. In their collective eyes, blinded by the huge monies generated, this trio is prime examples of what they, the Government Officials Representing the Interests Of Canadians, consider heroes in the business world.
How would you feel if one of your loved ones went to the hospital for cancer treatment but died due to them receiving bogus drugs instead of the treatment that would save their lives…..Then seeing that those who supplied these bogus counterfeit drugs have snubbed their collective noses at the law avoiding any responsibility for their actions???????? Then You Find Out That The Canadian Government Looks Upon These Criminals As Hero’s Above The Law!!!!!
A short while ago the wife of a good friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. She, at the advice of her doctor, went into treatment using a drug called Avastin. For six months her treatment went along just fine. Her cancer was under control with her symptoms being reduced on a daily bases.
Then, all the sudden her cancer returned with a vengeance……the drugs that she had been taking had suddenly stopped working and her cancer started to spread uncontrollably. It was then that rumors of counterfeit Avastin being shipped to unsuspecting doctors and clinics. With this knowledge her doctor had the Avastin checked and found out that what he had been administrating to my friends wife was counterfeit and contained NO active ingredients.
A month later my friend’s wife, like a lot of those who were treated by this counterfeit drug, died of advanced cancer. We do not know if she would have survived if she had been receiving a non-counterfeit drug and this would be very hard to prove in court…..therefore, due to the costs involved and the legal blockages put in place by Canada Drugs and their numerous internet drug companies scattered worldwide (and outside of the American Judicial System) any legal or civil charges were not activated.
I am requesting the help of the general public in finding any pertinent information regarding Mr. Tom Haughton, Mrs. Maryanne Thorkelson (Haughton) and Mr. Kris Thorkelson, the owners and operators of the hundreds of internet drug companies (All working under the main company called Canada Drugs based in Winnipeg, Canada) with web sites scattered worldwide.
At one point Mr. Tomas Haughton had set up shop in Barbados utilizing their lax laws and reputation of skirting international regulations especially with those who had deep pockets and plenty of graft monies to flaunt and spread around to the numerous politicians and government officials who readily stood with their greedy hands outstretched. Mr. Haughton was able, through his political and legal connections, escape prosecution in Barbados and hide out in Canada where he was able to sanitize any and all records of his existence (there is no public records of his existence and even with a physical search I could not find anything that even showed that he existed…..even his school records, his marriage records and those of his children have somehow disappeared from public view….what money will buy when it is spread around the right sources) thus hiding from public view.
Over the past two years I have been actively investigating the goings-on of Canada Drugs and those who operated this company distributing bogus counterfeit drugs to the unsuspecting public. I have been able trace the activities of one Mr. Tomas Haughton, who was the brains behind the operation, setting up hundreds of web sites to promote the sale of these counterfeit drugs. He was able to establish an operational base in the Barbados (living at 18-19 Sugar Cane, Royal Westmoreland, St. James ) where, through the utilization of his inflated bank account, he was able to flaunt the law and these drugs to the unsuspecting public worldwide without fear of prosecution.
The list of government officials who were bought off in this banana republic, paid to look the other way and to lose any documents so/as to prevent any legal actions is endless. From what I have been able to discover is that multi dollars changed hands (I have not been able to find a positive paper trail but through international banking records and coming from the scuttle bug there was talk about huge cash withdrawals being made but no tracing as to the disposal of these monies were to be found) with most of this is said to have been distributed in and to officials in Barbados.
When Mr. Tomas Haughton left the country (after important paperwork has mysteriously disappeared and any format of charges were dropped) he seemed to disappear from the spotlight but he reappeared in his home town of Winnipeg Canada. There he has taken on the task of running his partners business in the same mannerism that he had done with the illegal counterfeit drug business.
From What I have been able to discover from different news reports and public interviews Mr. Haughton has openly denied that he knew that the Avastin that he was shipping to the public was fake but even after the different news reports were issued he continued to do so.
The following are just a few of the numerous exerts that I have been able to find that were made way before these shipments finely ceased:

Haughton is currently under federal investigation for shipping counterfeit Avastin into the U.S., offering Avastin for about $2,000 a vial — some $400 less than the manufacturer’s price.

The only FDA-approved Avastin that is allowed to be sold in the U.S. is manufactured domestically by Genetech. Five million vials of Avastin were sold in the U.S. in 2011.
The counterfeit Avastin was manufactured outside the U.S. in an unknown location, and was sold by Montana Healthcare Solutions (MHS), a company located in the Barbados, CBS found.
MHS sold the counterfeit Avastin for just under $2,000 for 400-milligram vials, $400 less than the manufacturer’s price.
Tom Haughton was responsible for bringing the drugs into the US. He runs several businesses in the pharmaceutical industry, including MHS and 3,000 website domain names.
The drugs were then sold through a complicated web of companies owned by Houghton in the U.K., Denmark, Switzerland, Turkey and Cairo, according to CBS sources.
I have nothing to hide,” Houghton said when interviewed by CBS News about bringing counterfeit drugs into the U.S. “The businesses that I have are ethical, safe and legal.” When pressed further by CBS, Houghton admitted he was “not sure what the U.S. laws are.”
“It’s my fault that my company sold this product,” Haughton said. “But I’m telling you we sourced it from the controlled and regulated EU supply chain that millions of people trust every day.”
A source close to a federal investigation told CBS News that Houghton’s involvement in bringing the counterfeit drugs into the U.S. is a key part of the investigation.
CBS also learned that Tom Houghton is one of the leading suppliers of Canadadrugs.com, the “largest and most trusted” online Canadian pharmacy, who alleges that they had nothing to do with the fake Avastin being sold in the U.S. Furthermore, Canada Drugs says that Tom Houghton is “one of [their] trusted partners.”
Regardless, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that it is illegal for pharmacies based in Canada or other countries to ship prescription drugs into the U.S.
“Canada Drugs is not licensed in any of the U.S. states,” Carmen Catizone, executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, said. “They are violating state law every time they ship a package into the U.S. to a U.S. patient.”
Catizone also noted that “no drugs that are being shipped via the Internet to U.S. consumers from these websites we’ve identified actually come from Canada or have actually been approved by Health Canada.”
The FDA has sent letters to 19 medical practices, saying they may have purchased the counterfeit drug which contained no active ingredient, containing mainly salt and starch.
“We use Avastin in combination with other chemotherapy,” Dr. James Speyer, head of the NYU Langone Cancer Center said. “In some these colon, lung and renal cancers, it significantly changes the rate of response and may change survival.”
“Counterfeit drugs is a huge problem in the United States,” Catizone said. “The estimates are that $75 billion worth of sales of counterfeit drugs occur annually.”

Knowing his past history of using his political and legal influence (paid for through the enormous profits gained through his internet drug business) and the fact that he has become an expert at circumstancing the law, I realize that what I am trying to do will only come about with the assistance and information coming from those who he had maltreated.
These fugitives from justice might have found a safe haven hiding out in Canada but they are not forgotten. Just how many people, how many loved ones, who went to their doctors for treatment and were given not the treatments that would have saved their lives but a counterfeit drug being sold by a company whose main objective was inflating their bottom line??????? And how often have these criminals gotten off through them bribing or paying off government officials and the justice system allowing them to go Scot free????? Just how many people have had their hopes and dreams shattered through the criminal actions of these predators who preyed upon the innocent sick and dying human beings who needed the help that this drug would have given them….that is if they had received the drugs that they needed not the counterfeit knockoff that was sold by these criminals who hide behind their lawyers and bought off politicians.?????? I feel that it is time to give them a taste of their own medicine!!!!!!!!
I am presently seeking information on the location; the addresses and Phone numbers of Kris Thorkelson; His Wife Maryanne (Haughton) Thorkelson and Tom Haughton….owners of Canada Drugs who sold counterfeit drugs to unsuspecting people worldwide: To allow these criminals to live freely in Canada just goes to show the depth that Canadians have lowered themselves…..
Please have your office write to him and their highly paid legal team who protects them from prosecution and let them know that they might be able to run but they will eventually get caught……They might be able to buy off and bribe those living in a third world banana republic but they will not escape just punishment……let’s make their miserable lives pure hell and give them an example of Canadian Justice!!!!!

How more short-sighted can this moribund administration get?
The graduates from this institution,, and possibly the vocation sectors of the BCC are the very few people capable of going overseas and finding work to send back home much need forex in the form of remittances.
Very few graduates from the academic and semi-professional divisions of the UWI have a ghost of a chance to make it in an internationally competitive work environment.We wonder what Ms Redman would say about the SSJP broken promise? Maybe she does not regard them as part of the elitist academically-oriented education system.

You should not dismiss the figure of 6,000 jobs to be eliminated from the public sector. There is some justification to the amount being bandied about and rumoured to be an IMF imposition on Bim.
You should appreciate the 3,000 scheduled to go ‘soon’ are not part of the rationalisation programme due to take place later in the year with respect to the merging and elimination of the majority of 19 statutory bodies earmarked for reorganization and restructuring under the aegis and directives of the IMF.When the dust is settled and the IMF is finished counting the beans the amount might just be just under or over the 6,000 target.
The second wave of retrenchment over and above the 3,000 double serving tranche due by March does not even include the Central Revenue Authority which should see the coalescing of four existing Central Government departments. -

I did not hear Dennis Clarke (I can’t put myself through that torture) but while in the market and at Popular, several people told me that he said some of his usual nonsense about temporary officers not having any rights to their jobs. I don’t know if they were accurate because no trade unionist that operates in the Public Service should utter that crap.
He should be aware that section 13(7) of the Public Service Act requires that temporary officers who had been working for three years prior to December 31, 2007 are entitled to be appointed. Further, section 13(11) does not allow the Government to keep an established post vacant for more than one year. Some of these temporary people have been in these posts for eight, nine and ten years. Yet we can hear some fool telling them that they have no rights.
Unity Workers Union took one of these cases to court and now our member is appointed.
I suppose that Clarke somehow believes that he must protect the Government that gave him the duty free car, for which he refuses to pay the appropriate income tax of $24,000 per year for the last four years. The $96,000 plus interest and penalties can pay the the salaries of a few of the displaced workers. But the authorities refuse to go after him and now we can see why.

You are quite right (practically speaking) and ethically justified to deem that nonsense, if true, morally and professionally reprehensible.
If indeed he accepts such a retirement package it would confirm everything Caswell has been saying about the other unions using the workers like slaves for their own narrow selfish ends.
How can he cripple financially the BWU’s ability to survive at a time of such pending severe austerity and dwindling membership?If that is the kind of package he is taking with him what kind of message of solidarity and empathy is he sending to the thousands of low pay workers expected to be sent home rather soon from both the public and private sector?
Surely Sir Hugh, Sir Grantley, Sir Mencea and Sir Frank and others like Mr. Cumberbatch who gave their ‘toil sweat tears’ and lives for trade unionism must be turning in their graves.Hal, could we have also your take on Caswell’s assertion that D C is a tax cheat, aided and abetted by the MoF?

Trade Unionism and Trade Unions in Barbados must be surely have their deaths accelerated by the broad masses and middle classes of Barbados.
For they are of absolutely no relevance and consequence to greater and further development of this country.
The future of the times and spirits of this age in Barbados have truly left them sadly but deservedly behind as battered badly bruised bloodied dying organisms.
However, let it be here now written though that Trade Unionism and Trade Unions modestly assisted in the social political material financial development of this country from the 1930s to the 1970s, mainly through the securing of many gains for the working classes of this country, on the basis of the legalization and recognization of Trade Unions, the right to strike, picket, the strengthening of the collective bargaining processes, improvements in pay and transfers and holiday pay, etc.
Such a forty-something year period was in contrast to the forty-something year period that immediately came before (late 1800s to 1937) – where the vast majority of the working classes in Barbados lived in abject poverty, misery, squalor and in other socially degradating circumstances and conditions – and with only modestly organized labor professional formations, eg, Working Men’s Associations, existing to represent their fundamental occupational professional interests in this country then.
The primary social political causes of the majority of these classes living in such wretched and inhuman conditions were because of rampant obscene oligarchic political exploitation by ideological material financial means, and downright crude oligarchic political economic dispossession and social marginalization and control too by such ideological material financial means.
Therefore the vast majority of the working classes in Barbados – in that particular period of British colonization – were ruled by the apposite British imperialists – the British government and overseas owners of various plantations – especially too via the Governor and his aides on or not the Executive Committee, and the resident managers and overseers of the plantations, respectively – were ruled by the local legislators of the Barbados Parliament – many of whom were members of the local planter merchant class – by the members of the local judiciary – and by those others who owned and or controlled the local peripheral capitalist and political economic and western-oriented enterprises and estates.
So, a proper historical survey of the times and spirits of that historical epoch will show that in actual fact Trade Unions and Trade Unions – and too their allies in government – were on the ascendancy and did become a major dominant of collective social expression from 1937 on wards to the 1970s, by, et al, landing some heavy blows against the rulers of this former British colony and the many recalcitrant local political judicial business oligarchs – for industrial control of the working classes of Barbados – Let us here now write again that we have never seen those oligarchs as any social elites – as much of the historical literature on such topics have been misleading erroneously portraying such people as. For we repudiate the use of such terms because of their racist bigoted prejudicial connotations).
Anyhow being strong believers in the theorem that it is particular emergent and bound to be/dominant times (thoughts and consciousness) and spirits (energies and wills) over lesser times and spirits of the relative historical epochs that lay the basis for the creating, configuring, maintaining of particular movements and institutions and organizations, and their structures and functions, and their purposes and relevances – over other lesser movements, institutions and organizations (just like how many of the oligarchs had to give up much control over the working classes to the oligarchs of and of organized labor itself )- and not the other way around, where it is believed by some persons locally and internationally that it is these particular movements, institutions and organizations that
create, configure, maintain, etc these particular emergent and dominant historical times and spirits – over other lesser times and spirits – we have to write that the emergent and dominant times and spirits of the 80s and forever in Barbados have established the many of the conditions for the eventual necessary destruction of Trade Unionism and Trade Unions in Barbados ( and in many other places too) – and for the betterment of the greater development of this country.Thus, the rise of the internet and many other modernizing information and communication technologies must be taken as a whole by serious observers of the types and scales of inexorable and engineered dialectical changes taking place across Barbados and in many other industrial commercial jurisdictions in this world. For they are both representative of and the expressive of a very major dominant of the times and spirits of this particular modernizing epoch in this land – and where consistent with neo-individualist and postmodernist concepts and too behaviors mindful of such there doctrines – they have particularly been laying part of the basis for not just the destruction of Trade Unionism but also the construction of a movement, institutions and organizations that will make sure that the statuses of workers, supervisors, managers and owners in the work culture system of Barbados and beyond are replaced by the statuses of partners doing business in partnership enterprises in these particular places.
Such emergent and dominant times and spirits, movements, institutions and organizations will not only make sure that in the future no longer will owners of businesses see the use of the relevant others as a fundamental basis for the achievement of many of their political material financial objectives – but also they (these happenings) will make sure that no longer will it be seen by many people in the future that those people who are now being exploited by the relevant others – and who are still found to be having to depend on the exploiters
for payments – will be made to use the properties of the exploiters to eventually secure payments.And with the process of such changes coming about, there will be too the securing of the statuses of partners transitioning to greater human development for themselves individually or en masse by their using their own properties ( as partners of the multifarious
partnerhip enterprises using the properties of the partnerships ) to help secure
such necessary further individual or collective human development.As it stands now, by Trade Unionism and Trade Unions being forced to lessen their support for a rapidly diminishing work system and culture (which must be substantially destroyed in order to make way for these partnership enterprises in Barbados and beyond) it will only be some time before Trade Unionism and Trade Unions will become in further decay , crumble and collapse, and then go into virtual extinction.
And surely it shall be good riddance to some social ideological political features that served their purposes but have overstayed their times.

I am losing track of your analysis because on the one hand you are putting forward a case for working people, then one for the professional middle classes.
The professional middle classes are the biggest exploiters of ordinary working people. It is this parasitic class that has been controlling the reins of political power in Barbados since constitutional independence and who have brought the country to its knees.
They ar e as much the enemy as the former colonisers, who by the way we got rid of nearly 50 years ago.

I am just asking: How long did Sir Roy work with the BWU? Does he have a legally binding agreement with his employer? If so what does the size of his gratuity matter to anyone else? Did any of you question Sir Allan Field’s settlement with his employer? What was the size of his package? How much money did he make from his tenure with BS&T? How many shares of that company did he sell? for how much? AndSaunders, is Tom Haughton living in CAnada or Barbados? If he is living in Canada pursue the Canadians to prosecute him. Leave his association with Barbados alone. If he is in Canada he is gone from Barbados and what he does or did is no longer of interet to us. Stop maligning Barbados/ I have just returned from Canada and athe amount of corruption in U.S. Canada, England, The Vatican (of all places) makes Barbados very small potatoes. We are neophytes in the area of corruption.
When are Bajans going to realize what a good country we have? I have just retuned from a first world country where for six days my area ws without electricity for six days , thus no heat, no cooking, no heating, no hot water, skyscrapers and high rise apartments without elevators, no subway, etc. Some places were without this commodity for three weeks; some people were forced to burn furniture in their fireplaces, water pipes froze and burst, and the only thing the authorities could do was to try and restore things to normal as quickly as possible. It also meant that workers; tose restroing the power had to sork with temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees and high winds adding to the discomfort. And you people here are complaining? Praise god for what you have.

I went to Kings County emergency room in Brooklyn and could not believe people were there for over 8 hours and that was not Barbados that was a first world country. Tourists in Miami airport stands for two and three hours before seeing an immigration officer. In Barbados they complain having to wait fifteen minutes.
We are not the worst people. This thing will past. Let us get together and support those who are laid off. Offer what ever you have that you can spare even if it is time talking. Know your neighbours and make sure they do not go hungry. -
I am very careful when I post information anywhere since I use my name. So when I say that Dennis Clarke has not paid income tax on the value of the car that comes with his package, that is the whole truth and nothing but the truth. It is also the truth when I say that in four years the tax is $96,000. This is known to the Government and they are not enforcing it. You ever wonder why? This is the same man who was asking workers to surrender 3% of their pay.

@Caswell, It is a good thing that you are not in a court of law. There you would have to speak the truth, the WHOLE truth and nothing but the truth. In many of your contributions what you postulate is PART of the truth. One of the truths you have to teach people is the difference; in terms of the Civil Cervice (the Public Service) between Temporary workers, Casual workers, and Established posts. you have to teach them the difference; for pension etc between established posts and acting, and or temporary posts-those filling in for persons on leave etc. You have to teach them the difference between posts in statutory corporations and the Government service. In this way many of the misinterpretations of language used by politicians would become clearer and result in less confusion among the population at large, who don’t have a clue of how government, the civil service and departments operate and the rules that govern them

Politicians who have so corrupted the system that one cannot now get a job just on their skills, experience and merits but have to go through some corrupt politician on the island to become employed, in essence, voting is tied to job acquisition, say what you want about the US, that shit would land politicians and employers in PRISON………don’t get me started Alvin.
