The opinion of IMF is as an influential player cannot be ignored in austere times.
The opinion of IMF as an influential player cannot be ignored in austere times.

We use to hear the objective was to build a society. However it has become all about the economy in recent months. Click on the image above to read the latest International Monetary Fund projection for the Latin America and Caribbean region.

Is the government levelling with Barbadians? Are we able to remove the partisan blinkers to have sight of the priority issues? Are we confident that the current suite of economic solutions on offer is appropriate?

  1. David, we are doing great. so said Carson and company.

  2. A blogger once pointed out that the difference between Haiti and other Caribbean countries is Tourism. Looks like a bit of bitter truth in that.

  3. Ok, let us discuss next steps.

David @ until we get truth, there is no next step David with crooks , the next step for the crooks is BMWs and RRs cars

  6. CCC and AC are finally right someone is saying something negative about barbados

  7. Here is the deal. The second quarter central bank review placed us close to the accepted minimum of 12 weeks. We know the country leaked 300 hundred million at the to of the year. The third quarter review which is due will be interesting to establish if the government’s recent strategy stopped the leak. We know the plan to enter the international market to raised flopped. If, and let us hope not, forx continues to leak it will be Houston we have a bigger problem.

The other issue is that we are not only dealing with leaking forex, remember cover protects the parity of our dollar. We also have a problem with not growing. The analogy we have used in the past is a plane stalling if it does not maintain a minimum speed. We have been experiencing negative growth for such a sustained period that we are about to stall.

  8. well seriously folk .u really believe that people gonna take wunna seriously with the constant drumbeat of DOOM and GLOOM… Really after a while it wears thin and people no longer interested . Really the gutter politics on BU a once strident and unbiased forum has reached LEVEL RED…..scorched and burn articles are the menu of the day…So what if the IMF have an opinion or an analysis is it the same IMF that gave advice that have some of these third world countries balls in a vice grip…. Barbados would survive despite of all the slings and arrows and the nasty tactics of journalist that seeks to destry , Even the manipulative Bizzy Williams couldn’t take it no more and shed some crocodile tears while admonishing those taking aim and fire at the Barbados economy….. steupsee LOUD

  9. @ ac
Gurlllllll you better call Olivia Pope…lmao

  10. Is this the same IMF that Sinkler and Worrell are now in Washington holding talks with about the Barbados economy……….Carson, am i still making sense?/

  11. And to add. If Barbados is unable to raise money in the markets then it is the IMF we will have to turn. There is no where else to turn. The economic indicators are posted for all to draw conclusions. We are not making this up. To the partisans this is not. Bout preaching doom, it is about understanding the implications of where we are as far as economic performance is concern.

  12. @David
Just a point to note. Negative growth suggests that we already stall.

  13. @Oilman

That is one interpretation but Barbados has developed a reasonable infrastructure and reserves over the years which has given us the capacity to absorb some hits. We are now at the point where we can’t take by more. What is sad is that as a country our leadership has not been able to mobilize a majority of stakeholders read citizenry, businesses to get on the same page. Six years later the level of rhetoric by this government is unbelievable.

  14. @ David
Having infrastructure and reserves to absorb hits does not mean we have not already stalled. In fact that is exactly de point. Once we running pon reserves it means that we not earning enough to sustain current levels of consumption.

  15. @Oilman

That is what reserves are for, to act as a buffer to provide time to react. We have not been able to react.

  16. @David
You still missing de point. I not questioning what reserves are there for. What I trying to tell you that we using reserves cause we already stall.

  17. @Oilman

    Understood.

  18. ac is looking forward to the next article and I told YOU … Standard and POORS,,,, how about that…….so predictable,,, politics or politricks,,,,,,,

  19. This situation is —
To be expected under the DLP

We will get back to good grounds under a BLP Government. It will be hard work but we will do it under the BLP

  20. Maybe there is a silver lining in these numbers, the governments have botched the economy so bad that a lot of economic immigrants will want to go back home

  21. What is very interesting is that when you click de table above and look at all de stats presented, only Barbados projected to got negative growth next year. LOL boy tings real brown. DLP yardfowls got to get real and look at de facts in relation to what goin on wid this economy.

  22. @Oilman

It hurts to read this chart yet we have some here who avoid the issue facing the country by spouting unnecessary rhetoric. These numbers are from the IMF who visit the country and interviewed stakeholders read central bankers, Opposition, private sector etc. at this stage it is about our leaders doing what is required to get most on the same page.

  23. EVERY TIME , THE DLP FORMS THE GOVERNMENT, THEY DOES RUN DOWN THE COUNTRY. In the1986-91-94 period, they shut down Barbados; everything went down. BLP gets in –suddenly the country is firing on all cylinders and did so for 14 years -You don’t know that the stupid ignorant dogs called the DLP want to take credit for the 14 years of prosperity.

EVERY THING GETS DIFFICULT WHEN THE DLP GETS IN POWER AND THEY AND THEIR GULLIBLE SUPPORTERS COME UP WITH EXCUSES AND BLAME EVERYBODY ELSE.

You don’t know the DLP would want to take credit for the 14 years of prosperity under the BLP but they do not want to accept responsibility for what has transpired under Dem from 2008.

The DLP WANTS TO TAKE CREDIT for 14 years of prosperity but the BLP must be held responsible for what the DLP has done to this country from 2008—

This is the logic of a wicked political party that is contributing to polarization and the upsurge of violence in this country. That kind of logic resonates with their supporters and they in turn manifests this in illegal activities. Ask those criminals who are shooting up the country , bringing in drugs and committing crime which party they support or sold their votes to in the last BUY -ELECTION .

THEY ALL SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY–ALL THE CRIMINALS

THE DLP IS A CRIME MANUFACTURING MACHINE. (statement of the year) THIS IS WHAT THEY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE COUNTRY. –CRIME AND VIOLENCE

    THE DLP IS BAD .
THE DLP IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD NOT HAVE FORMED THE GOVERNMENT WITHIN 30 YEARS OF THE 91 -94 debacle of a Government.

PIECE OF WORK -THAT DLP PIECE OF SHIT

  24. @David
Wunnah can call me gloom and doom cause I don’t see no way out. In a previous post I did mek de point that de 4 day trip de MOF and GOB did mek to put dem bonds pon de market was de last ditch effort to prevent de collapse. Looking at that table I convince now that I did right.

Nothing not happening in this country. Thing is de biggest problem facing this country is a lack of confidence in the govment. Man any body who not politically bias would admit that this govment just ent cutting it. I honestly thought after de election we wouldah see a different approach to things but well, hope all in vain..

  25. @Oilman

Some of course will not believe it but BU has no patience with this BLP or DLP BS many like to play. We read what the tea leaves tell us. We have become firmly of the view that it is time for Operation E11 to be mobilized AND with haste!

  26. Well….when you keep charging higher and higher taxes, backed up by higher and higher Vat and you are still receiving less and less……but keep charging more and more like a madd dog going after its own tail …. the result…..Farmville.

financial paralysis….no better still a self inflicted BLIGHT.

I ask again …who blight this rock?

  27. @David
Man I just want everybody in BU family to click that table above and realise that this excuse that it is de financial crisis that got we where we is, can’t hold water. Every single country pon that list projected to experience growth except Barbados.

  28. @Oilman

BU posted the image of our peer group for obvious reasons.

  29. Another opinion from THE IMF
IMF admits mistakes on Greece bailout
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has admitted that it made mistakes in handling Greece’s first international bailout.
The IMF said it was too optimistic in its growth assumptions and said a debt restructuring should have been considered earlier.
Greece was granted a 110bn euro (£93bn; $145bn) bailout by the IMF and EU in May 2010.
Another 130bn euro rescue package was approved in February 2012.
    Modifying the rules
Greece’s first bailout came amid fears the country would default on its debts and that it could spark debt contagion in the eurozone.
The IMF has now released a study looking at the handling of the programme.
It admitted that it bent its own rules on exceptional access for the programme to go ahead.
To justify exceptional access, one of the four criteria that must be met is that public debt is sustainable in the medium term.
But the IMF said: “Even with implementation of agreed policies, uncertainties were so significant that staff were unable to vouch that public debt was sustainable with high probability,”
But staff wanted to go ahead with exceptional access because of fears that any spillovers from Greece would threaten the rest of the eurozone and the global economy.
The IMF then amended the criterion to where debt was not sustainable with high probability, “a high risk of international spillover effects provided an alternative justification”.

  30. STEUPSE !!!!!

  31. I ask again …who blight this rock?

    THE DLP BLIGHT THIS ROCK
    THE DLP
    THE DLP
    THE DLP
DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY AND ITS GOONS LED BY STINKLIAR, FUMBLE;, DOPEY AND BIG MOUT

  32. @ Oilman
It is not just negative growth BUT 2014 is projected to be worse than 2013: -1.1% vs -0.8%.

  33. So from 0% in 2012 to -0.8% in 2013 to -1.1% in 2014. The economy can no longer be described as “stable”, it is clearly getting progressively worse.

  34. I thought captains were supposed to go down with sinking ships, did PM Stuart take a plane and abandon the sinking ship that is Barbados?

  35. David

Operation E11, what is that exactly?

  36. Wait wunna think IMF is god .well think again. cause nuff of these problems start wid the IMF one fit policies…. IMF my backside… this little gibraltar still stands head and shoulders above many other countries that with all their natural resources fell flatter than a pancake. yes barbados is having some hard economic times but which country in the world that isn,t at least the govt hasn.t shut down.Wunna see what happening in USA happening in Barbados.Panic Fear and GLoom BLP yardfowlism.

  37. If its Operation Eager 11, who gine lead the charge this time; 1) Estwick 2) Inniss 3) Sinckler.

  38. Well Well. | October 13, 2013 at 8:10 PM |
I thought captains were supposed to go down with sinking ships, did PM Stuart take a plane and abandon the sinking ship that is Barbados?
    …………………………………………………………………………………
The PM reminds me of the mother in the back hiding from paying the coolieman, and sending one of her children to say she is not at home.
A man told me not long ago that we have our own IMF running this country. Two houses of Igrunt Muv ver Feckers.

  39. ac…
you just don’t get it nah..or you choose to ignore it….THINGS HAVE GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE.since 2008. Shutting eyes and playing ostrich just ain’t cuttin it anymore…..What bad times are we experiencing here that others are not? Ya mean you that daft?…Look at the chart woman….You mean even lil St. Vincent looking way above we?….ALL THE LIES and “don’t mind, don’t mind” stupidness and we still holding we head above water.. is BARE SHIITE…..Look is time something happens to stop this spiral NOW…. as there is no more time to play with !!!

  40. Hear Barbados’s worse nightmare Freundel Jerome Stuart in Canada…..”I am not dissatisfied with the performance of ministers whom I have appointed either in the House or in the Senate and therefore its not my contemplation to reshuffle my Cabinet”.
Right now CONFIDENCE will only return to the investment climate if the BLP takes the Government of Barbados, and furthermore only if OSA is the Minister of Finance. No one else can fit the bill at this time.

  41. you guys look at half or part of a picture to generalise and form conclusion..here is what the ……….2013 Index OF FREEDOM FOR ECONOMICS says about ST<VINCENT

By and large, open-market policies are not firmly institutionalized. Tariff and non-tariff barriers undercut trade freedom, and the investment regime lacks efficiency. More broad-based economic development beyond tourism and agriculture continues to be undermined by the undeveloped financial sector and the lack of long-term financing mechanisms. Despite some progress, the management of public finance remains poor, and the public debt burden has reached over 70 percent of GDP.

  42. With the CCJ’s recent ruling and the IMF’s negative prediction for Barbados, it will be a long time before we see that expected rush of Caricom citizens to this island to claim their piece of our highways, which many believed are paved with gold. Antigua, Dominican Republic , Haiti and Guyana offer better prospects.

  43. Still, we have a lot to be thankful for.Last Saturday night around 2200 hrs an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 with an epi-centre 19 miles north of Venezuela and 54 miles WNW of Port of Spain, shook Trinidad,Grenada,Dominica,St Vincent,Guyana,Martinique,Guadeloupe,Antigua and as far north as St Maarten.

  44. What Operation E 11, what?

    What does that mean?

    What trivia!!

This country is facing such serious fundamental inveterate social political material financial problems, that such puerility should not be veritably written at this stage.

What is clear too is this: that – having regard to Barbados’ post-independence history – it is these two idiotic factions that have been the ONLY ones that have been at the helm of domestic governments that have been presiding over our country’s long term material financial demise.

For, it is these wicked corrupt inept DLP BLP that have been responsible for bringing the country to this wretched ruinous dedevelopment stage, and that must – as soon as possible – be PERMANENTLY removed by the broad masses and middle classes of people of this country from the Parliament of this nation state.

Indeed, the fact that it is they that have been presiding over such miserable extensive declines is in itself logical proof that they are incapable of providing any serious solutions (partial) to these problems, and that therefore they cannot reasonably be part of any solutions (partial) to these problems.

And, it is not that these problems and the causes of them are unsolvable, substantially so. NOT AT ALL!!

What it is mainly, is that these jack o lantern DLP BLP factions do not have the requisite vision, perspicacity, competence, leadership ability, or political will to deal with many of these problems.

Indeed, there has to be a new progressive nationalist developmentalist coalition building people centered regime installed in Barbados, to take the country out of the monumental abyss it is in, and onto a new path of development (based on a new development model) .

    PDC

  45. @ PDC
    Operation PDC -X3 then….? 🙂

    LOL

  46. David

You playing politics just like everyone else. Stupse.

  47. If PM Stuart said that in Canada, does he not have the balls to say the same in Barbados? after all, ”I am not dissatisfied with the performance of ministers whom I have appointed either in the House or in the Senate and therefore its not my contemplation to reshuffle my Cabinet”……………… that is where he should be voicing his concerns, to bajans, not canadians…………..i saw him in todays’ nation voicing concern about hassle free travel, he is right that Barbados’ domestic immigration laws are intact and still have to be observed regardless, but the immigration officers are only now aware of the changes re community laws and should now be retrained, did Stuart not know of the community laws for the last 6 years??

He should be more concerned about the economy, QEH, Eager 11, etc, his plate is full……why does he make it seem like he sneaked back into the island………have they never heard media reports coming out of other countries that the President/Prime Minister is due back today………….????
