Politics in Barbados seem to have hit an all time low: the ruling party is under severe scrutiny because of its mismanagement of the economy, but the other side is apparently moving under the radar escaping any meaningful examination of its performance. In my opinion, the Opposition, as presently constituted, is fast becoming an ineffective laughingstock.

Recently, the media carried a story to the effect that Kerrie Symmonds was “elevated” to some non-existent post of “Leader of Opposition Business” in the House of Assembly. Political analyst and commentators quickly waded in on the merits and implications of the appointment, without first considering that there is no such post. The political leader of the minority party in the House becomes Opposition Leader or if you like, the leader of opposition business. One section of the media reported that members on the Government side laughed when the announcement was made. That alone should have given the Opposition pause since this otherwise clueless Government thought that it was funny.

If I were Kerri Symmonds, I would be quite offended at being held up to ridicule by thinking people. The opposition does not lead any business in the House. The Opposition Leader would normally designate persons to shadow ministerial portfolios, and those persons would then become the Opposition’s lead spokesperson on the particular subject matter. But appointing a leader of Opposition business is really taking a joke too far. Persons who form the Opposition were not elected to provide comic relief: they have a serious constitutional role of keeping the Government on its toes. Instead, we have an Opposition that appears ill-prepared to present itself as the Government in waiting.

I do not often listen to parliamentary debates, but when I do, I get the impression that Opposition members are following Government’s lead of speaking and getting by with only peripheral knowledge of the matter before the House.

On Tuesday, July 23, 2013 Government introduced an ill-conceived amendment to the Defence Act which would allow officers and soldiers to be suspended on half-pay when they are going through the disciplinary process. The Prime Minister justified the amendment by suggesting that a similar arrangement exists in the Public Service. He seems not to understand that it is reprehensible to punish an accused by taking away half of his salary and then seek to determine his guilt or innocence.

A person placed on half-pay pending the outcome of a charge might suffer hardship trying to survive on that level of income. And when found to be innocent of the charge, the return of the half-salary that was withheld might not necessarily undo the suffering that the person had to endure.

I know of one case where a person, on half-pay, who was eventually found to be not guilty, but before then he had lost his home to the bank, and his wife to another man because he could not support his family. No amount of money could compensate a person who had been victimized in this manner.

Instead of opposing the backward measure, the shadow spokesman, or should I say the leader of opposition business for Defence and Security, got up and threw the Opposition’s support behind the amendment. It is clear to me, if to no one else that the Opposition is chewing on more than it can bite off. They need to study the legislation going before the House, and if necessary, get help to understand what is before them. This half-hearted performance of their duty just will not do.

Our country is now suffering from the effects of an inept Government made worse by an equally amateurish Opposition. If so much of our daily lives were not so intertwined in politics, the ineptitude of present day politicians would be funny. Sadly though it is not!

  1. Hants…..funny you should talk about Quebec, it’s odd that a landlocked province with no way to go and totally dependent on the rest of Canada for even minor necessities are allowed to bribe and receive payment under threat of becoming autonomous when they have no such power to become independent, great little scam and it works.

While it is their right to bring any such measure, it is sickening to realize that it is this same insensate BLP that has helped ( as a result of many of its policy programmatic effects from its misrule in 1994 – 2008) to put this country in the deep and profound paralysis and abyss that is in right now, and over which they seek to criticize the government for its incompetence in managing such affairs.

! Not sure that what PDC says in the comments above is true. As a matter of fact , they are not true !

  3. Well Well at 11:19 AM

How do you arrive at the public purse bearing the costs – is the project not a private concern even if some players have ‘connections’?

  4. Willie………….is the taxpayers not the ones always burdened by the mistakes of the politicians….Four Seasons started out as a private project and in no time, NIS pensions were being used to pay their debts and prop them up, prospective investors from Italy that we never even heard about or knew existed also had their sights set on and were being introduced to NIS funds by Persaud as well as 4 seasons lawyer(s), so i believe i can safely arrive at taxpayers being the victims to the DLP’s dumb mistakes.

  5. Should read…….are the taxpayers.

  6. Caswell, I am on your side. I agree with Pachamama in relation to Caswell dealing with all issues regarding Dee or Bee. We must all be cognizant to the fact that the Bees had an the best opportunity to win the last election. But just like the West Indies team, the Bees snatch defeat from a win. If Lynch had shut his mouth regarding who should be the second in command if the Bees had won, things would be different. If Payne should have refrained from personalising issues, Edmund would not have made any remarks regarding credibility. So Caswell, disregard the CCC’s and the AC’s who only see Dees morning, noon and night, Monday to Sunday from January to December. Yes Caswell, for this country to move forward, we must have alternatives. Sorry PDC, just criticising both parties and banning TAXES, notwithstanding we have no resources to fall back on will destroy Barbados. Pachamama I see with you. Another thing, every body have skeletons in their closets including you “Blowing in the Wind”.

  7. @ TMW
Don’t point the finger at blame at me I was not one of those who kept making the same mistake 14 times over, now in haste for correction I would not follow the blind ,those who have eyes to see let them see , .all caswell could do as he is prone to and have shown over and over again is to cause friction and division and that is not a solution or remdy,
what I believe is called for a watch dog committee made up of ordinary citizens those who are not tainted or have been corrupted by the system. The Young adults is a place to start, the only thing Caswell can do is kick up a lot of dust while others who know of his past kick some back his way which in that case nothing would be achieved,,,,

The DLP are dealing with a poor and stressed economy there – country is broke “all in the red” but Barbados is best in the hands of the DLP. The BLP like Mayor, Bill Filner, San Diego, California (USA) would be unable to accomplish anything with constant controversy and drama surrounding them. If it ain’t one thing, it’s another.

  9. That BLP group is thrilling and suspenseful. American Film Producers Michael Bay and or Jerry Bruckheimer should consider them for movie making; box office hit for sure.

I was offline for a while and I want to thank those who sought to defend me. It is not a question of Fart in the Wind, AC, Carson or anyone else revealing any of the skeletons that I would want to remain hidden. I do not even mind the attacks but I object to them inventing lies about me. Oh, by the way, the skeletons that were in my closet are now all white from bleaching having been exposed for so long.

  11. We would much prefer hear about the Pickering skeleton and the loan still owing Canadian businessman Jolly that a representative of the DLP arranged, the man thinks he was lied to just like the electorate, and how is he going to be repaid seeing he has a lien on the land at Pickering and no work can commence. HA!!

  16. You Well Well (poster) on this blog stand accused “have never voted in Barbados. The audience here just would like to know. This individual, LOOK have been on this blog for quite some time now, accused of been a Canadian resident and I might be, but might now be. The audience here just would like to know. David (Blog Master) says I’m a fraud just because he doesn’t know a thing about me. Mr. Know it all, thinks he know it all but baby you don’t know a thing about me.

With that attitude i will live to make sure you cannot present another lie on here without me picking it apart. The onus is on you to present proof that i never voted in Barbados……….i dare you.

  21. @Well Well. You are being deliberately provocative. I like it.

  22. Amused………..these cretins are acting like this is not about people’s lives and their negative and vicious actions can bring on untold suffering to voters who actually trust this lot. They put these semi-literate lackeys on the blog to distract from what is really happening and to continue to spread propaganda and an agenda that will do nothing to help the island progress, they know some people are unable to see their methods and most people who can see are unable to verbally expose them given the size of the island and the retaliation, victimization and discrimination that can be wrought on them if they try……….i have no such restrictions and will stick on the likes of Carson, like white on rice.

  23. ‘Sorry, PDC just critising both parties and banning taxes, notwithstanding we have no resources to fall back on will destroy Barbados’ – Tell Me Why, in referring to the PDC as part of an earlier wider blog under this thread.

Tell ME Why, you have been posting long enough on this BU blog site, and the PDC too, and you have been reading or going through many of our posts and previous articles to know that we are not, as you are outlandishly suggesting, just criticizing both parties and banning taxes.

    YOU KNOW IT!!

So, what you have put out in reference to us under this thread, we in the PDC dare not allow to go unchallenged.

Hence, in the interest of informing some others who might not know or recollect the facts of which we allude to, we must therefore write that what you have attributed to us is totally unfair, completely false and erroneous and is a mangled distortion of the facts pertaining to the multifarious things that the PDC has been writing or speaking about for over the years on here or elsewhere on those particular subjects.

Also, we reject the possible implication of your suggestion that we do not have alternative progressive national strategies for and to support the replacements of this criminal evil TAXATiON system, when we already have them.

Anyhow, we will continue and esp with greater aggression to rail against and to present the alternative modern visionary strategies and systems to this demonic nefarious regressive anti-masses and middle classes anti-productive
TAXATION system with a view of making sure that most Barbadians will know about them and therefore help to bring about a post-TAXATION society for Barbados, and therefore help to bring about too the utter permanent removal of both the DLP and BLP from this governmental political landscape.

I do just that surrender to this blog only limited informaiton. I could be a Canadian. I could also be an American. My place of residence could be Westmount Quebec, Canada, could be Greenwich, Connecticut (US), could also be the Hamptons (New York). It’s not Barbados. Don’t inhabit the Barbados island, never have and never will. Place of birth and residence is somewhere on the North American Continent. Prodigal Son (poster), on this blog assumes that I’m a DLP supporter in waiting, a DLP Parlimantary seat. LOL Have never loved below zero weather. I do however love snow, only six inches or less. I love fashion felt hats and furs (foxes, sables and minks) but not needed in Barbados.

The Barbados Jazz Festival cancelled, since December 2010 due to budgetary constraints but was certainly no match for the Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada) or even the Essence Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana (United States). Barbados over the years have stepped down several steps, no longer a desired destination. Got to give people what they want, Barbados has nothing to give. Detroit produces the annual big deal North American Auto Show and the National Football League a big deal Superbowl game. Detroit, New Orleans and the National Football League in the United States does this – give people what they want.

If so Mr PM , why dont you apply the same bull to the Ministers and to your self , We sure an Audit will send you all some where faster also.
We also now see that DLP can take CROOKS to new levels.and leaving the BLP in the dust
Since you all in the House are Public Service also, then you need to take your own advice and go home.,,,, for none of you have read your Oath of Office and apply it to your self.,,

  28. Plantation………..when i first came on this blog, i saw how you had to struggle while most of them were laughing and making fun at you in your distress, these are the types of sleaze that sit around waiting for crumbs to fall off a political table or the next scam or con to happen to feed them, they do not have the drive or initiative to expose wrong, the definition of right and wrong are alien to them, it’s easier for them to adapt to a corrupt existence and ridicule people who see a way to correct things. These are the same scuzz bags who complain about bajan whites having a lock on the local financial economy, but they continue to encourage the BLP and DLP in all their crimes against the taxpayers effectively continuing the lock the minority bajan whites have on the small economy. It has even escaped their notice that the richest of the minority on the island have already sold out to foreign interests and moved on, cause they are still busy whining while simultaneously encouraging corrupt practices. Some of the party faithfuls and yardfowls will not be able to function unless attached to the backside of a politician. At least 2 or three generations of bajans have gotten used to that way of living and it has become a cycle.

I don’t deal with political parties on a personal level so I have no ulterior motive other than to see the damage and destruction they have inflicted on the island and the taxpayers over the years exposed. If they can move themselves away from that lowlife, low level way of handling the island and it’s economic and judicial system, i believe they would come to recognize they have accomplished something useful for once.

  29. Look………..when West Indians start looking at life differently, they would realize that they are moving onward and upward, until then they are stuck in a time warp, particularly Bim, they have to move on somehow, cause it has all become stagnant.

The organizer of the Barbados Jazz festival was not the brightest bulb anyway, no big surprise there, his lawyer is/was the same demon caroline herbert.

  30. Dr. William Duiguid left the BLP and Barbados entirely, moved on to Canada not the United States. The United States is brutal. . . . will have no mercy on you. Somebody warned him, must have.

All in the United States would have been persecuted and convicted: Owen Arhtur, Mia Mottley, Dale Marshall, George Payne, Gline Clark, Sir Richard Cheltenham, Sir Charles O. Williams, Mark Cummings, Samantha Cummings, LeRoy Parris too. Their properties (homes, cars, banking accounts), additionally would be confiscated. David Thompson is now deceased. His estate none the less should be conficated.

CLICO was/is non-justifiable likewise massive land theft involving that old woman, Violet Beckles. Jessie Jackson Jr., Monica Conyers and Kwame Kilpatrick should have did what they did in Barbados not the United States; politicians in Barbados have done/are doing the exact same thing. Corrupt lawyers an dpoliticians in Barbados are not persecuted and convicted.

  31. Ariel Castro on Friday (07/26/2013) in Ohio (United States) agreed to a plea deal (life in prison) to avoid death sentencing. Capital punishment I know is not practiced in Barbados. The life of David Thompson on October 23, 2010 cease to exist. He died. Barbados did not render him death sentencing, his illness did. . . . Do your dirt and run, it will catch up with you anyway.

  32. Karma does not discriminate, she will catch up with you one way or the other.

  33. The state of Florida exonerated George Zimmerman for the death of Trevon Martin. The justice department at the federal level is now investigating the matter. The federal government overrules any local/state laws. Zimmerman should be worried. It was the Federal government that persecuted and convicted Monica Conyers, Jessie Jackson Jr. and Kwame Kilpatrick. It is the federal government now investigating United States Representative Michele Bachman of Minnesota.

Corrupt lawyers and politicians in Barbados are not persecuted and convicted and Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite is nothing to be afraid of.

  34. @ Well Well

Deeds and his story about Violet Beckles is not a laughing matter, but Arthur makes you laugh over and over. Tyler Perry, perhaps does not know Madea has competition. Love this, love it. Owen Arthur, during a budget debate could not remember that he actually chaired the meetings of Cabinet discussing the VECO matter. He said he wished he was there. But when told by both Minister Sinckler and the Prime Minister Stewart – ‘no Owen, you were there,’ he then said that he said something else. When pressed again, he again said something completely different and also said that he never said what he said on the two previous occasions the entire country heard him say it. Either he was drunk, a suffer of Alzheimer’s disease, forgot taking his medication and or both.

  35. Those MF’s who stole from that old woman, Violet Beckles would not have done that in the UK or United States.

  36. Look……people are very aware that things they do in Barbados, they cannot attempt anywhere else and those who think they are brave enough to try always suffer the consequences in foreign countries.

Arthur is not a young man anymore, he should know he can’t remember everything, he has had a really long run and should be glad and thankful that he came out of it more or less unscathed.

Plantation’s case was/is heart breaking, before i even heard about him/her, i saw the old lady Violet Beckles with her documents when the lawyers involved in the massive fraud and theft were being arrogant along with their clients and whatever government minister(s) of the day is deeply embedded in that crime. Some on here would still like to pretend it did not happen, don’t know if they are trying to convince themselves because they and their family members are deeply involved, that is why i told Plantation to make sure all their names and those of their attorneys are exposed in newspapers worldwide so everyone will know what they did, they will still try to cover it up and tell lies, that is the nature of those beasts.

  37. A lot of damage has been done down there involving Arthur and the BLP. Arthur right now is wounded, probably will never heal. The BLP I believe took leader of opposition away from Arthur because of that note forwarded to Prime Minister Stewart asking him to take Mottley off his hand. Don’t know why that would even cross his mind. She, Mottley is not interested in the scew driver experience and damn look at her. Who cares? Who gives a shit if she moans or groans?

Pathetic Opposition no a pathetic government. Interesting lot that they are. Pay close attention to TT because we are very very close to them now economically as we bank and shop with them daily – and I mean we do trust them with our finances.

Kamla was parading in Tobago elections and lost everything she had in it and now in a Bye-Election echoed the same speech about looking to see where they were wrong/what they did wrong as they prepare for local elections.

  40. That’s all of Kamla’s lies since she gained power returning to bite her in the form of Jack……Karma……….he will know expose everything before he himself is cut off at the knees…………..Karma…………hope the present government in Barbados is watching and learning from the mistakes of others.

Well Well @ a lien on the land at Pickering? Well if he check his papers he may see that he dont even have clear title of that land , More fraud on top of fraud? , So the court now a part of it , the land surveyed by the land surveyors dont even check the land history even after telling them , For they listen to the lawyers and not to their profession. They also put the name of the company or person to who ever is paying them , The older surveyors would say who own the land and who is to go to next ,,, the buyer. Not now, So they set up false history and paid the taxes moved with the help of Mr Fraud at land tax Forde and on they way they go then look to build with plans approved by Mr Mark Cumming , town and country ,

Seizing assets: Legislation to confiscate criminal property being considered, says Attorney General
THE Cabinet of Barbados is expected to soon have a proposal before it, introducing legislation that would allow the assets of persons to be seized, if it can be proven that they were acquired through illegal means.

Word of this has come from Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite. He made the disclosure while speaking to the media yesterday morning at the Courtyard Marriott, where the United States Embassy was hosting a workshop for Attorneys General and the Judiciary of the Eastern Caribbean, on the topic of civil assets forfeiture.

“…You would have heard that Dominica in the OECS [Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States] has been the first country to actually implement the legislation. We here in Barbados, I can confirm that we are contemplating a similar move. Indeed, it is my hope within the next week to take the proposal to Cabinet,” he said.

WE WILL SEE WHO HAVE PAPERS HIDDEN IN LAWYERS OFFICE MIA, COW , OWEN, TODD, THORNE, HURBERT. AND ALL OTHERS ,
