Cost-U-Less May be Costing-U-More

Cost-U-Less

Cost-U-Less

Cost-U-Less is baiting and switching at the checkout. For example, honey dew melons and cantaloupes are priced each when you get to the checkout they are weighing them and charging you more. I have had arguments with them on four occasions and each time there were several managers and supervisors checking their computers and telling me that they are sold by the kilo. I pointed out to them that they are priced at each. One of the floor managers came to me and explained that it was priced by the kilo so I told him that they should change the price on the on the shelf.  He went to see the shelf price and agreed that it was priced each. I was so frustrated that I told them to take it off my bill as there were other people in the line waiting to checkout. They removed it and the manager came to me and apologised and he offered it to me on the house. I told him to tell the guard about it so that he wouldn’t think that I stole it.

On my second visit I encountered the same problem they went and took down the each price tag and told me it was the wrong price and I left without purchasing.

On my third visit  the each price tag was back up so I attempted to purchase again. The same problem occurred and we had another argument. I asked them why is it that I had to come there and show them how to run their business and they obviously lack some problem solving skills and that the manager should go home.

Finally they knew that I was speaking the truth so they tried to bypass the SKU code for melons and entered another…when I read my bill they had entered the melon as Idaho potatoes. The guard at the door didn’t notice even though I had few items in my cart.

I found it very difficult to shop at cost you less.  There are very few items that are cheaper than some places BUT overall I was not impressed.  These people are not ready for business AT ALL. It costs me more to shop there.  For those of you shopping there please pay attention at checkout and remember what the ticketed price was or you will be charged more.

Not me because I vow never to cross their doorsteps, I will continue to use the stores I am accustom to using and help keep their business afloat. By the way does anyone know who are the local franchise holders?

    • @Baffy

Don’t bother, the problem with PW is that if you dare to challenge his positions it is a problem. He should stand by because BU will respond to his column today in du course.

I was wondering when you would get around to Peter Wickham and his sick manipulation of Barbadians as a moderator on Down to Brass Tacks. He tries to beat down any person who has an opposing views of what he stands for. He believes that everyone should accept Homosexuality. It is not going to happen.
Over the past two weeks Peter Wickham took up so many positions that go against the grain of what Barbadians once stood for. He now is ready for no gays in the Boys Scout.

People are surprised that the DLP won the government but one of the big factors is Peter Wickham making the BLP lose. He called the church the right wing church and said that the DLP was going to suffer because of its alignment with the church. Well those church people help them to win. As long he is associated with the BLP they will lose

Although he does not believe in God I hope he reads this NBC news article with headline with the link below

  5. OFF TOPIC

Barbados will invest $11 million on a new tourism product – Barbados Island Inclusive – that officials estimate will result in visitor spending of almost three times that amount.

In unveiling the package yesterday, Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy said it would offer visitors an air and accommodation package from April 29 that earns them free dining of up to $600 per person at local eating houses as an inducement to greater spending in Barbados.

How is it that news like this never hits Barbados Underground?

  6. Someone should point out to PETER WICKHAM THAT,

    Man + Woman = LIFE

Man + Man = NO LIFE

Woman + Woman = NO LIFE

I his parents had practiced MAN + MAN or WOMAN + WOMAN then he would never have been here to talk foolishness!

  7. Islandgal

The next time you go to Cost-You-More carry your hockey stick, I bet they would notice.

Cost-U-Less has invested a lot into the economy of the DLP and must recoup their investment. Where do you think that they get back that money? From the Barbadian consumer of course! If it makes you feel any better, consider the higher prices that you are paying as a campaign contribution.

  8. If consumers are unhappy with Cost-U-Less, or any other retail outlet, just do not buy from them. That is the power of the consumer.
If you do not buy from them they will have to pack their bags and go back to the Ole USA.
Buy from the village shops where you can go and ‘trust’ goods if you do not have any money.
Stop allowing yourselves to be exploited by foreigners.

  9. All this talk about nothing.
    S0-Lo Trading Blackrock.
So far as I see the lowest priced place bar none.
I never shop any place else.

  10. I been in Cost-U-Less once. Did not see any benefit from other retailers here, in fact, quite the opposite in my view.

I do not think it will last past two years.

  11. What must be clearly established here first of all in this bitter tasting phraseology that: Cost-U-Less may be Costing-U-More, is that those goods that the particular customers are taking from that establishment do NOT cost anything in money terms. This principle applies not only to goods that are found in that business, but also to every single commercial good and commercial service in this country.

Another principle that must be made clear in this contribution is that what are called prices only exist in the minds of owners of commercial goods and services, and only exist in the minds of customers vying for ownership of those commercial goods or for use of those commercial services. What are called prices by many people in this country are really values which are numbers that only have psychological subjective existence. Their existence cannot be proved!!

The immediately aforegoing leads us to another principle that must be established here, which is, that just as customers are using money to help get the use of those commercial goods and services in Barbados, the owners of commercial goods and services are using them to help get money. These described behaviours do not suggest however that money is a medium of exchange – which it is NOT!

Well, for a definition of money: money is primarily a non-tradeable, non-consumable, usable measurable physical commodity – and the only one of its kind – that carries denominations for the main purposes of users of it paying for the use of it out of the own incomes, payments and transfers.

So, the fact that owners of goods and services and customers vying for goods and services are never paying for such goods and services, which – as said already in this post – do not have/ carry any inherent money numbers, and the fact that whenever the PDC is considering the use of money in any commercial transactions, that the use of such money costs nil in money terms, it must mean therefore that it is the cost of use of local money that owners, customers and many others are paying for the use of in every last, in every succeeding
and in every forthcoming regard concerning the use of money in this country.

With the cost of use of money being so alarmingly high in Barbados (more than 83 per cent out of every local dollar transacted in the country at this stage), it must have meant that assumptions by some that Cost-U-Less was going to help reduce the ‘cost of living’ in Barbados were going to be misplaced given what they are seeing now, that that establishment wants to have so much money from customers and which too is as a direct consequence of the fact of the very scandalously high cost of use of money prevailing in Barbados.

  12. Shoppers vote with your feet just do not shop there – I understand that a former high profile Insurance exc who was close to the late PM is one of the local connections so I & my family do not shop there !!

  13. Consumer has the power Buy local support Your OWN! Buy bajan! Ghee all this long talk about CoST_U_LESS! bajans not stupid they will put their money where it is going to be of value for their pocket., So what if Cost U Less fails!

  14. When you go to supermarkets or any other shop, always ask about the source of the food/commodity. Do not buy carrots from Oistins supermarkets that get theair supply from Canada; do not buy chiecken from fast food restaurants or supermarkets that do not buy locally.
Fore supermarkets and shops to source Barbados and Caricom before going to the rest of the world.
    Buy Bajan, buy Caricom.

    • People who live in Barbados are acutely aware that we are NOT strong on consumerism. It is why the late David Thompson advocated a startegy of allowing more competition to drive down prices and so cost of living. At least this is what he said. If we go by the pricing strategy of Cost-U-Less and the reaction or lack of by the competition, it is clear it has had no impact on prices so far. The only impact is that the marginal retailers have decided to make changes or pack it in both detrimental to employees.

    • The problem with the BMC is not the concept but the execution. Who gets the dealerships to supply key commodities? You will find like most things in the islands it is all about patrimony. A few get rich at the expense of the masses. There is also the ubiquitous ‘middlemen’ defined by status, political stripes and colour who have become embedded in the distribution chain.

    • @Hal

There is a lot we can learn from Jamaica, it is the reason BU posted the video above about what corruption and political incompetence has done to Jamaica. Robust laws, active watchdog NGO groups etc. We cannot wait until it collapses. Corruption and crime in a austere economic climate – not a good combination.

  15. Also, the fact is that with a monetary base in Barbados that is relatively fixed, the higher the cost of use of money (local), the less income, payments and transfers are expected to be in the long term and the slower the rate of turnover of money at the micro and macro levels than, say, five years ago, in the country, in the main. The more and more these ossie moore DLP/BLP governments get transfers of money via persons and other entities so-called investing in government securities and to, et al, assist in keeping government workers employed at this juncture the more albatrossic the cost of use of money becomes in Barbados. It is the alarmingly high cost of use of money and evil wicked TAXATION that are among other things helping wreck great havoc among a great number of private sector businesses in the land and helping to cause their demises and distresses, and too that will be forcing this irresponsible, incompetant DLP government – albeit regrettably – to begin laying off workers in the not too distant future in this country.

  16. For those who want to reduce their food bill.

    1. There are farmers more than willing to sell their produce direct from their farm leaving out the middle and top man. So prices are right…and you get extra sometimes if ya nice. Look for those who do not use pesticides. There is a report out where produce grown with pesticides, were soaked in water (as per instructions given to get rid of same) and then eaten…pesticide residues were still found in the blood of the person who had taken the test…find same on the internet. Also…. encourage farmers to join the various Farmers markets around the island – SeaSplash are doing very well on a Saturday and have organic farmers, Holders too on a Sunday. A certain farm in St. George sell their own produce on a Saturday….I am concerned about their usage of pesticide however…would like to be assured that rumours of over-usage are indeed not true. Redland Farms have an open shed for selling produce on a Saturday in St. George and they also make wonderful jams and chutneys right there on the premises!!

    2. Buy fish direct from the fish market…when there is a glut on fish – buy and freeze. I bought 200 flying fish, packaged in 10s and ready to eat for $117 for 100. Froze what I did not use immediately, and take out a pack when I desire, season and voila!

    3. Go to Cheapside or Probyn Street markets – buy meat from butchers…most cost $8.00 a pound, some even $5 and $7 a pound. There is nothing that I need more for fixing my meals and even for entertaining, all the necessary cuts are there…had a black belly roast the other day that had to be sweeter than the lamb brought all the way from New Zealand…Oh! I bought some stew pork to make garlic pork – 4 lbs for $12.00….that cannot even buy me a piece of chicken. Talking chicken…I only buy organic…people who although they give them some feed, let the chickens roam and ketch worm, purge them before killing with aloe vera…chickens brought up the right way…and taste sweet and not tough as some people think…their eggs, delightful.

    4. For vegetables…the above markets and hucksters on the side of the road…purchase only from those who do not use pesticides. (make sure de goods ent tief)..and encourage them not to use same if they do…farmers are forced to believe that their yields will be better if they use pesticides…we the people can convince them it is not. At the end of the day pesticides kill the soil, our water table, our seas, our coral reefs and us!

    5. Visit SoLo – they open containers every two/three weeks and their prices are lower than all the rest. They may not have everything one requires but they certainly help the home budget with the range they have. Plus most of their products come from everywhere but the USA. The USA’s FDA is a joke…the amount of food Bills that get passed as they are pushed into many other Bills, hidden from the real truth, is sick…the latest one was the labelling of GMO’s. After Solo look for locally-owned if ya want to spend ya money. Learn to shop really. Once ya got your route what you spend in gas still saves…just get it to work for ya by proper planning. Look for MIS cassava and Split Pea flour…coated by flying fish with these…did not even have to use eggs or milk for the batter…delicious. And Gluten Free. They have some other interesting flours too but watch for those that are GMO like the rice for instance! Be informed. The internet can be used for information and not just looking up foolish pictures of naked people! (just joking)

    6. Do not buy most USA products…too many are filled with Genetically Modified Products and are not labelled as such…anything with Corn written on the label is unhealthy. Soya, Wheat, Corn…are GMOs. Nearly all cereals are laced with corn and sugars! So bad for ya even thought the pretty pictures and the word Natural and Healthy are all over the packages!!! Even bottled water…apparently the FDA has one or two people looking after the safety of that for the whole of the USA…hello? Will not tell you what has been found the bottled water after certain tests!!! I have no problem with buying organic when I am in the US…but it has to be certified organic…still take precautions…but there ent nutting so here…all just 2nd and 3rd class goods that will not evah be placed in the supermarkets over there…if we stop buying USA products and exchange same for local products, we will help our Food Bill to be reduced, savings for the country. And also savings for our Health Bill.

    7. The fresher the product the better for ya. Our vegetable counters in the supermarkets are filled with imports…we do not know where they come from or for how many thousands of miles they have been on the road in order to arrive there…most of the imported stuff has long since lost any of their vitamin value. Go figure why one would pay high prices for non-food.

Following those rules above, I have brought my food costs right down. LIFE CAN BE SIMPLE. PRICE TOO EXPENSIVE? DO NOT BUY IT. If we do not buy it, we will force those who stock supermarket shelves to get with it. THE POWER IS OURS.

And yes…I went to CostULess…more like CostULies. Pure junk food en masse, prices higher than most places, and service is poor. Plus ya gotta join a Club? What’s with this Club business? We vexed on the one hand when Clubs doan let us in for whatever reason to party but we ent vexed dat we have to join a Club to buy we food? Well…look at my crosses!!!

Supermarkets will only get better if one stops shopping there, or close down. As I said above WE CONSUMERS HAVE THE POWER. I certainly let ALL know that when I am shopping. We do not have to purchase what is shoved at us. Simply put. We do have choices. And buying as much local as possible is one…but even then…I want to know that the products I purchase are free of damaging to my health ingredients. Certain companies that produce crap will not get my money, honey. Had such a terrible reaction to a local milk the other day…I gine right back to drinking the raw…made a big mistake and thought I would try something ‘new’ so I could promote same….hmmmm. I have never had a reaction to any kind of food in the past…so ATTENTION, ATTENTION.

I would like to see the Barbados Manufactures Association (BMA) ensure that local food products really do adhere to the fullest to high standards…and that preservatives used are not harmful to health…and even further that ingredients do NOT contain GMO’s.There should be a special stamp that such products should carry…not for extra cost to the producer…but a cost that is swallowed by the BMA for the good of the country.

I have started a petition to ask our government to consider making Barbados a “clean” country…i.e. no pesticides and preferably no seeds from GMO General Monsanto. Barbadians are not understanding the importance of signing this petition. It is NOT a political one, it is a HEALTH one. If our government would do what other countries around the world are doing..banning the above… we can advertise a “clean” island as a real tourism pull and it will improve the quality of foods we offer. 2. Being “clean” will reduce our Health Bill considerably…anyone noticed the huge amount of cancers plaguing the island?

Nuff said. Now let me hear the cussing I gine get. Life can be simple as I have found. I am only writing the above to let ALL know what I do. If you want to continue quarreling about food costs and bad health…do what you do normally and move right along.

  17. The fact that the cost of use of money (local) is estimated to be over 83 per cent at this juncture means that the benefits of use of money is getting lower and lower. They are both inversely related – the higher one goes, the lesser the other becomes in the context of a monetary base that is relatively fixed in Barbados. With a monetary base that should be over BDS $ 1 billion, it should mean that at least BDS $ 840 million is commercially transacted on average on an annualized basis in Barbados and at least BDS $ 160 million is ‘lying around idle’ ( a very technical term however) on average on an annualized basis in the core financial system in Barbados, and this would be so if one were to minus too the number of times the exact/ same physical money coins and notes enter and exit (not) the core financial system to be used by persons. The assumption that the amount of money ‘lying around idle’ in the core financial system is a relatively modest quantity tells us how falsely inflated the impressions are that government/private sector will undertake a BDS $ 600 million stimulus any time soon and staggeringly worse is the Central Bank’ claims that the commercial banks owe about BDS $ 12 billion to depositors and that so-called borrowers owe to commercial banks a similar amount.

  18. @ Rosemary Parkinson

This is an absolutely brilliant contribution. US food is hugely infected genetically modified and no one knows what the long-term outcome of this will be.
Just as impsortant, historically we use dried seeds to grow for the coming season ie corn (maize) but GM corn does not dry for re-planting. Farmers must buy fresh seedsd every years from the giant US-based agribusiness operations.
Food security is the most important issue, along with long term health, facing our nation.
    We need sound leadership.
Support local farmers and stop buying tinned US products. We are poisoning ourselves in the long term with huge amounts of salt, sugar and fats along with chicken and red meats injected with massive doses of antibiotics.
Under WTO rules we cannot ban them, but shoppers do not have to buy them.

  19. Hal
The biggest gm seed producer is Monsanto the maker of Agent Orange. Monsanto also has offices and plants all over Europe.

  20. @ Lemuel

And Cargill. They monster African farmers telling them they would help them to improve yields, which is true. But those old farmers who save corn to plant the following season would be foarced to buy their products every years. Once the ground is contaminated there is no return.
Caricom needs to act in unison. Guyana is bigger than England with a fraction of the population and many more natural resources, including rice; Dominica is bigger than Barbados with a smaller population and huge agricultural space; Haiti used to be the large rice producer, now it is the basket case of the Western Hemisphere.
    Something is wrong.

  21. The Washington Post Monday, April 22, 12:45 AM
A Florida-based compounding pharmacy is voluntarily recalling all lots of its sterile non-expired drug products sold nationwide over concerns that the products may contain bacteria, federal regulators said Sunday.

The Food and Drug Administration asked hospitals and other health-care providers who received sterile products, including all injectables, from Balanced Solutions Compounding Pharmacy, a division of Axium Healthcare Pharmacy of Lake Mary, Fla., to immediately check their medical supplies, quarantine the products and follow the company’s recall instructions. Patients who were administered any sterile drug products made and distributed by Balanced Solutions should contact their health-care providers.

Problems at Pa. abortion clinic point to lack of facilities oversight

Brady Dennis and Sandhya Somashekhar APR 20

Abortion foes say Philadelphia case is wake-up call about lack of oversight and potential for abuse in facilities.

.Officials are not aware of any illnesses, an agency spokesman said. The company, which says it is licensed to operate in all 50 states, posted the recall on its Web site but did not say how many products are affected.

The pharmacy is one of 30 compounding pharmacies — those that custom mix medication for individual patients — that the FDA inspected between February and April, part of a targeted action after inspectors found filthy conditions at the New England Compounding Center, the Massachusetts pharmacy in the middle of last fall’s fungal meningitis outbreak. Tainted steroid shots made by NECC have killed 53 people.

Federal inspectors have found dozens of safety problems at these pharmacies. They focused on firms that make high-risk sterile products, a key segment of the compounding industry. Several compounding pharmacies have issued recalls in the past several weeks.

An FDA inspection of Balanced Solutions found “poor practices and conditions which may have exposed the company’s sterile products to microbial contamination,” the agency said in a statement. Inspectors discovered “black particles of unknown origin” in seven vials of an injectable steroid, according to their report. They also found “a cloth-like filament of unknown origin” in one vial of chromium-chloride injections, an additive used for intravenous nutritional supplements.

The FDA has identified gram-negative bacteria, a type of contaminant, in samples of the chromium chloride, officials said Sunday. Gram-negative bacteria can cause disease and many types of infection. It’s not known what the black particles are, an FDA spokesman said.

Company officials did not immediately return telephone calls Sunday. But in statements posted on it Web site, the firm said it was issuing the recall because of “concerns associated with quality control processes, which present a lack of sterility assurance.” It also said it had welcomed and cooperated with inspectors.

  22. HIGH PRICES !
Bajans like to brag about not being cheap and how they can buy expensive things, They laugh and mock sport those who cant buy expensive name brand. The merchants love all yuh — Idiots !!!

  23. Rosemary

I wish we could clone you a thousand times over.

Will ask the family to check out SOLO.We have to be careful however of buying cheaper products from some of these 3rd world countries like mexico, indonesia and others like china and india, because of the low or no standards in terms of food handling.

  24. Cost u Less is Canadian and not US.I visited their store last week and immediately on entering glanced over at the check out counters. All void of customers and that gave me a message.Did a leisurely walk through and repeatedly ‘but up’on a fine looking young female who was cussing under her breadth about the high prices.Cost u Less might not last long on their current
marketing plan.I saw no need to spend there.

  25. The present administration gets an F for the cost you less scam…………..according to one blogger, the Act to allow such generous tax exemptions to foreign companies doing business in Bim was passed by Arthur of BLP fame……………….if this Act was not to the benefit of the taxpayers it should have been modified or changed, instead the present administration allowed this Act to remain for the six years they have been in charge with full knowledge that they were bringing in a foreign entity to ‘lower the price of food to bajans’. Now the foreign entity has thumbed it’s nose at the administration and the public because the Act was never changed, the Act remains to the benefit cost you and to the detriment of the consuming bajan public………….what are these politicians being paid for again?? Now is the time to find out if the PMs friend and esteemed gentleman’ Leroy Parris is also behind this scam on the people.

  26. It is reported on some sites that their are now a few genetically modified babies alive with DNAs of three individuals, two females and one male…………..do any of you really think that they are above exporting GM foods particularly to countries deemed third world and insignificant?

  27. That should read, the Act was allowed to remain in place to the benefit of cost u less and to the detriment of the consuming bajan public.

  28. @Gabriel. I did not say that CostULess was US. I say do not buy US products…and I read labels of all that I purchase…SoLo brings in stuff from Europe…England and the EU…more likely to have better processing of foods…but I still read labels! We must learn to do this. A few years ago (I think I wrote it on BU)…I picked up a can of something and there was a name of one of the ingredients that I had never seen before – it was a US product…and came home and looked it up on the internet…it was rocket fuel disguised in a nice big word!! What? Rocket Fuel? So because you have an excess of rocket fuel, you can put it into food? As they do with the excess corn…corn syrup, corn this, corn that…and all into the food…no wonder we are the capital of amputations!!! Diabetes rampant here.

Another way to enjoy a meal out…without huge costs…is look for specials. Mojo’s on south coast do a $15 gourmet lunch on Fridays…their food is as organic as you can get in a restaurant…bless their hearts…organic chicken and their own herb garden! Fabulous. Great vibe too…because I helped them a little, they have as a surprise to me advertised my book(s) on their menu. I like the back and forth of food love.

Upstairs of Cheapside Food Court…great home cooking from Harriett every day of the week… and on Friday/Saturday vegetarian from the Rasta couple…sweet fuh days. Price run ya not more than $18 for a huge local meal and all their produce comes from the market. Local helping local.

We can actually now pass flying by the fast food places…although you can choose slightly healthy things there…but they are expensive when you really look at it, and real real healthy, not! Even slightly healthy is a real push for me to say!

There is a veggie guy whose sign is on the side of the road at Dayrell’s Road…$6 food that is tasty and healthy…gine there tomorrow self! Because of people not being able to afford a lot of things…some restaurants are offering specials…so if you feel the need to dine out, look for them and take advantage.

Also…instead of holidaying in Miami or New York or even Toronto…do Barbados a favour and haggle a little for a good price at a local hotel that is empty. They should be glad for the business…Or if you have cabin fever…unfortunately you have to pay the monopoly excessive prices LIAT and CAL but islands are offering great stuff…I would go where people love their food and serve clean good local. Dominica, St. Lucia. Grenadines. Trinidad (yes there are amazing places there if you are eco in particular and it is not as dangerous as people want to believe)…Jamaica is great because the US $1 is now $100 and they love their local fare…MarBlue is an amazing little hotel in St. Elizabeth (jamaica) or MockingBird Hotel in Portland (delightfully eco) that uses local organic food…so yes! we can eat and play cheaply and healthy if we shop around and doan care who see us not shopping in designer clothes at ‘designer’ places. As I said and I keep repeating…we have choices!! And now it is time to take stock and keep those choices Barbados or local Caribbean!

If BU would allow it I will put up my petition. It is from a bona fide petition site. I await to hear whether I have permission.

  29. Love the food in Trinidad, it is to die for…….and i don’t even worry about my safety when I am there……………….

  30. @Rosemary
Hal(3.04am) wrote that comment.I did not name the source so plead not guilty of naming you.Heartily support and note all you have written.
I have always enjoyed the fare and folk of the Caribbean territories.Of them all I enjoyed Grenada most, living among some familiar bajan names in Mt Moritz and eating lots of local food prepared by an experienced helper.

  31. @ Rosemary

You are right about Harriet upstairs Cheapside. When I am home, I eat there once a week when I do my shopping. I buy a small portion for $10 or $12 depending on what it is. I go there for the cou-cou mainly. I missed her one week on this last visit, her neighbour said she was off for a few days after surgery. So I ate at her, it was good too. But she gave me too much for a small portion and I don’t like wasting food. Harriet knows my amount.

I went to the butcher at Cheapside and asked for mutton. It seemed I was the first person in years to call for mutton. He gave me a spiel about these new Bajans wanting lamb, lamb and that I am a true Bajan, he even threw in some extra pieces. All the butchers chirped in. Wanted to know how old I was, etc. lol

I buy my pork from the Pork producers store in Tweedside Road. They tried a few years ago, to sell me rib chops for loin! I put them in their place and now when I walk in, they stand at attention. ha, ha, ha.
Talk about service. If the chops are fat, they trim it off, they probably fear my mouth.

If anyone wants old fashioned corn, like your grandparents grew, roasting corn, I have some. I got it from some Africans who farm in the allotment. Non GMO, it grows taller than me. Some grow as tall as an elephants eye, no joke, but takes the whole summer to mature. Mine matures in August. Only problem is, some cobs may have only a few kernels, like in the olden days before Monsanto.

  32. This was put out last year…since then a Bill was passed…see Bill Maher’s little skit on that!!! Now if GMOs are safe…why do these big companies not want to place same on their labels???? Hmmmm. Food for thought I would say. Food for Death too!

A List of Food Companies That Hide GMOs

nknown to most Americans, many US food companies, which manage to keep their GMO ingredients under wraps, are joining forces to beat back Proposition 37, a bill which will require simple labels on food identifying genetically engineered products and ingredients. The ballot initiative from Right to Know will be presented to voters in California’s November election.

Agribusiness and biotech companies Monsanto, Dupont, Cargill, Dow, Bayer, BASF and others have put up nearly $25 million to defeat the GMO labeling initiative.

Big Ag companies have a vested interest in GMO seeds, and the pesticides and herbicides they use in tandem. GMO cotton, soy, sugar beets and corn, which are manipulated to make sweeteners and fats along with other additives like high-fructose corn syrup and soy lecithin, are in ready-made food, snacks, condiments, juice, soda and cereal. Many companies pushing these products into the marketplace prefer to hold profits high and keep consumers in the dark. Labeling these products would affect close to 80% of processed, non-organic food in the US.

Sunny Delight, Kellogg’s, Bumble Bee Foods, Bimbo Bakeries, Campbell Soup, Land O’Lakes, Hormel Foods, Dole Packaged Foods, Del Monte Foods and Ocean Spray Cranberries, to name a few, have all joined the anti-labeling coalition to defeat Prop. 37, as well as little-known companies like Knouse Foods, who makes applesauce and apple juice under the Musselman’s, Lucky Leaf, Apple Time, Lincoln and Speas Farm brand names.

As many companies have done, PepsiCo not only refuses to reveal its GMO ingredients, but in packaging products from its five divisions, Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Tropicana, and Quaker, it uses purposely misleading language such as “natural” or “all natural” to entice the health-conscious buyer.

Familiar “health food” brands funding the attack on GMO labeling such as Kashi, Silk, R.W. Knudsen, Horizon Organic and others may surprise consumers. The Cornucopia Institute has put together a shopper’s guide with a poster illustration of companies supporting GMO labels in the right column and companies funding the effort to defeat the label initiative in the left column.

The Alliance for Natural Health USA quotes Norman Braksick, president of Asgrow Seed Co., a subsidiary of Monsanto, who told the Kansas City Star in 1994, “If you put a label on genetically engineered food, you might as well put a skull and crossbones on it.” ANH USA goes on to say, “And that’s precisely what Big Food is so afraid of. Consumers will generally avoid GMOs if they can, and they won’t buy foods containing them. Can you imagine the consumer outrage if the labels on their favorite ‘natural’ foods suddenly declare that their ingredients are genetically engineered?”

It is deception in marketing and lack of transparency that has motivated a people’s movement for years, pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to create definitions and label GMO products.

In November, California voters will decide whether labels will be required for food and drink containing DNA that has been manipulated by scientists. If the bill becomes law in California, it could catch on in other states as well.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports, “At least 18 states, including California, have tried to pass similar laws through their legislatures and failed. This time, however, the measure made it to the statewide ballot with 1 million signatures. Recent polls show the proposal, Proposition 37, winning by a 3-to-1 ratio, although opponents have raised more than $22 million – $4.2 million from agricultural giant Monsanto alone … The showdown in California is being watched closely by food activists throughout the country … The proposition has the support of organic trade groups and consumer groups that say people have a right to know if the food they’re eating contains genetically modified material – particularly when the long-term health impacts are unclear. Proponents say research shows risks ranging from allergies to organ damage.”

Reuters reports, “Money is flowing in from around the country and opposition fundraising is outpacing that of supporters by a factor of more than eight-to-one, according to filings with the California Secretary of State,” and that it “might be a close battle.”

Brands that have donated in support of labeling GMOs for consumers are Amy’s, Baby’s Only Organic, Dr. Bronner’s, Eden, Lundberg, Nature’s Path Organic, Nutiva, Organic Valley, Straus Organic and Uncle Matt’s.

California Secretary of State Debra Bowen has put a reference list on her website of the Monsanto-led coalition against Prop. 37 and the financial contributions these companies have made.

  33. @Submitted by islandgal

it ‘boggles my mind that u chose to subject urself to such service over and over and over again, to prove what? i have never been there and never will. why do bajans believe that they have to patronize some outlet because it is new of originated from the US?

i think too that this is purpose work, they seem to be going on the premise that bajans will buy anything and not check. u were only one person who protested, i bet that for everyone who protested, 20 grumbled to themselves and still purchased the item. i think too that it could be the mentality of management in how they perceive bajans….i am satisfied with where i shop therefore i have no need to shop are cost-u-less

  34. Cost-U-Less is at 760 East Mono Way, Sonora, Calif, 95370-4035
    Tel 209 533 7657, email CULecom032@Northwest.CA
Write to them and let them know how you feel.

Hal……………what do you think will happen if anyone writes to cost u less, they already got the 15 year tax concession under the Act that this present administration neglected to change, they are certainly not going to give back the tax concession now……………did you read what cost u less said in the newspapers??? The government signed, sealed and delivered to this company 15 years of tax exemptions, with the price of food still the same and likely to raise even further.

  35. There was a write-up on CuL when they were about to open an Barbados and in it they indicated CuL is headquartered in Winnipeg,Manitoba,Canada with stores across Canada,Alaska, one in California and in Pacific and Atlantic listed island territories.

  36. This is a petition that I wish to present to the Minister of Agriculture…as well as Minister of Health & Environment, Minister of Tourism and of course The Prime Minister. Yes…I might get no response from them. But at least I tried. Accompanying my petition will be a letter pointing out the savings to food imports, health and how it could help our dwindling tourism. Yes! It is a bona fide petition site. Yes! they do ask for an e-mail…so does BU….and even if they do something with it…surely it is worth changing same but getting the petition numbers up. Yes! I made a typo and put 28 miles as part of the measurement of the island but I tried to rectify and it would not allow me…forgive please and perhaps use the extra 7 miles to count in our surrounding seas! And for those who do not know what a GMO is…well click on the link given on my last post for Bill Maher to explain and give you a laugh. It would in the meantime be wonderful to see my petition numbers soar! As I keep saying THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL PETITION, THIS IS SIMPLY A HEALTH PETITION. Bless.

  37. GM products are banned in the UK and Europe. They should also be banned in BARBADOS. do not let the US bully a small island. The health of our nation is more important.

  38. Whatever is banned in the industrialized countries, they usually send to the Caribbean and the idiot leaders accept it though it detrimental to the health of their people…………all the pesticides and medications that are unhealthy for human use.

  39. Genetic Modification of food is not new – nor is murder. In the past we have formed hybrids naturally, not in the laboratory.
