Wealthy families all around the UK still indirectly enjoying the proceeds of slavery.
Wealthy families all around the UK still indirectly enjoying the proceeds of slavery.

Dr Draper added that the database’s findings may have implications for the “reparations debate”. Barbados is currently leading the way in calling for reparations from former colonial powers for the injustices suffered by slaves and their families

The Independent

There was the revelation on the weekend that UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s slave owning ancestors were among other wealthy families who received repatriation payments in the millions of pounds when converted to today’s value.  It seems ironic that these families would have encountered no significant roadblocks to get compensation for participating in the heinous act of slavery BUT those who are descendants of slaves are ignored by Britain which to this day continues to benefit from wealth earned from slavery and we (Barbados) continue suck salt.

There are the apologists who will proffer the rebuttal that this was a time when to own slaves was not regarded as a wrong, in fact it was institutionalized. It is the same explanation which Christians offer to explain why slavery was part of a way of life described in the Bible. Some also argue that It is also explains why the French exacted millions from Haiti.

It is the height of insensitivity shown to our ancestors by a predominantly Black country that Barbados refuses to engage in a rich debate about exacting reparations from countries which engaged in slavery. The irony is that Prime Minister Cameron and others of his ilk now occupy authority positions in governments and are able to levy APD taxes etc to the detriment of Barbados. Some things never change.

  1. We cannot be so weak as individuals to let sublimial messaging shape how we think from childhood to the grave, yes it is an influence, but if our psyches are so weak as to become brainwashed by these messages while fully aware that the intent is self-enrichment by the perpetrators, again, we have only ourselves to blame. We boast of the highest standards of intelligence and education, but cannot recognize, brainwash, mind wash and act like we are powerless to deflect it. That excuse will no longer cut it.

  2. Well! well! are you not aware of MLK and others who were killed by the White establishment for daring to educate the Blacks.where have you been . How abiout NELSON MANDELLA! Today those in the heirarchy of the black community are well aware of the economic blows that they would be dealt and prefer to tow the line. blacks would always be victimised by the White establishment because it is their best interest economically to do so.

  3. Again WELL!WELLK you seem to be attrbuting these intricates and directives to bajans this is world wide and all all races are confirmed to them .it is called the norm. However blacks are more easy to adapt because of slavery blacks were denied the keys of self empowerment. However all is not lost cause HOPEFULLY as more blacks like myself and others understand the underlying roots and causes of our mindset we would wean ourselves away from the breast of those who keep pushing them in our face

“However blacks are more easy to adapt because of slavery blacks were denied the keys of self empowerment.”

Just out of intellectual curiosity, ac. Does your analysis apply to those blacks living in places like Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Ghana?
Most of the wealth and resources sub-Sahara Africa is now controlled by ‘foreigners’. The Chinese and East Indians have taken over from the Europeans.

Can you proffer an intellectual explanation instead of vituperation as you are wont to do when you arguments are exposed as weak and untenable?

  5. We now seem to be thinking that Martin Luther King and Malcom X along with Nelson Mandela fought for nothing, these giants sacrificed a great deal so that we in 2013 can use the education and strong minds to fight a corrupt and dying system. THERE ARE NO LAWS IN EXISTENCE TODAY STOPPING US FROM MOVING FORWARD.

  6. r yuh fuh real WELL! WELL!can,t you understand that those laws are written to benefit the few..Right now here in barbados we are talking about CLICO where were the LAWS to protect the ordinary man most black. HOW about Wall ST.How w did the banking laws protect the little Investor . What LAWS not for the little man only to protect the wealthy and controllers of the worlds wealth.

  7. Undoing the damage of 400 plus years of officially sanctioned racism will not be easy. However dumping the queen as Barbados’ titular Head of State should not be that difficult or are there a large number of closet anglophiles in our House of Assembly?

  8. There are no more Jim Crow Laws, there are no more Apartheid Laws, a large part of the slavery laws are now non existent, people died so these laws could vanish off the statute books, there are no more Whites Only, no Blacks Allowed signed, people who practice that now get sued daily, this script has been flipped for quite sometime now while black people continue to waste the opportunities that men like Dr. King died for, this should not be taken as a joke while black people continue to act like they are incapable of seeing the world as it really is and start to take RESPONSIBILITY. There are no more excuses. I swear some blacks seem to prefer things as they are so they could continue to bitch, moan and groan. It’s over and has been for some time, make the change in your own brain that you yourself continue to keep trapped in idiocy.

  9. M.iller i know where you are trying to take this issue accusing those in charge of black countries to be self serving and doing the bidding of others .Even though on face value that is true and indeed abhorrant .a system was already inplace which had pilaged and rob those people of self respect and dignity. What then would one expect from those undiginified leaders a new way of thinking.!

  10. What is happening with the likes of Clico and Wall Street (I worked there at one point in my life) is pure and simple greed. Greed will never go away from this earth, it’s all about the eyes being larger than the stomach. Our leaders have to get past their own selfish wants and focus on the needs of taxpayers. The greed of the richest people on earth is now causing them to hoard more money than is currently in circulation, that is one of the problems we are experiencing. A war costing trillions of dollars, with most of the larger nations jumping in also did not help. Whatever little discriminatory laws (designed to stop the progress of the black majority in barbados) should be removed from the statute books by the leaders calling themselves patriots immediately, you cannot blame the white man for that, he is not in charge of the legislature in Bim anymore. the buck stops with the leaders. And you cannot compare what Obama is experiencing with the GOP repugnants with what the leaders in Bim are neglecting to do.

  11. oh praise god i got my money out of barbados before the devalue the barbados dollar.
    what a relief.

    Legacies of British slave ownership

The amount paid to John Gladstone, the father of 19th-century prime minister William Gladstone was £106,769, the modern equivalent is $249 million Barbados dollars for the 2,508 slaves he owned on nine plantations. His son William Gladstone who was born in 1809 and died in 1898 and who served as British prime minister four times between 1868 and 1894 was heavily involved in his father’s claim.

Clearly there was no shortage of money in early 19th century Britian.

If the loss of slave labour was worth$249 million modern Barbados dollars to John Gladstone.

What then was the value of the slave’s labour.

And where are the unpaid wages?

“What then was the value of the slave’s labour.
And where are the unpaid wages?”

Before you can make such calculations you must first get black people in Bim to accept that they are the descendants of slaves and not English, Irish and Scottish aristocratic families. Jesus would appear as a black man with his white mother Mary in St. Michael’s Cathedral before that happens, SS.

  14. Dear miller etc.

Am I the only Bajan with black grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren?

  15. “Am I the only Bajan with black grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren?”

“oh praise god i got my money out of barbados before the devalue the barbados dollar.
    what a relief.”

Mr incorrecto….Your GOD had nothing to do with you moving your money out of Barbados. YOU did it all by yourself and let us hope it was legally done. And if you took it to the USA that dollar is being devalued daily and one day you might get a BIG surprise. If you took it to Europe soon from now it may be worth very little so stop praising your GOD for your greed!

  18. Some black people seem to worship white skin .
These individuals are brain washed .
WHAT DOES WHITE SKIN REPRESENT ?
IN NATURE WHITE SKIN REPRESENTS ALBINISM.
THE WHITE RACE ORIGINATED FROM ALBINOS.
    THE EVIDENCE IS SHOWN BELOW:
The Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus (56-118 A.D.) from his book: Germany Book 1, describes the Germanic tribes who lived in Calodonia (Scotland).
    Quote:
For my own part, I agree with those who think that the tribes of Germany are free from all taint of intermarriages with foreign nations, and that they appear as a distinct, unmixed race, like none but themselves. Hence, too, the same physical peculiarities throughout so vast a population. All have fierce blue eyes, red hair, huge frames, fit only for a sudden exertion. They are less able to bear laborious work. Heat and thirst they cannot in the least endure; to cold and hunger their climate and their soil inure them.

    Quote :
    HERODOTUS circa 440 B.C.
Book 4: [4.108] The Budini are a large and powerful nation: they have all deep blue eyes, and bright red hair. (At this time the Budini were still in their home territory east of the Tanais (Don) River, in what is now modern day Russia.

These GERMANIC TRIBES WERE PURE ALBINOS .
The Germanic tribes resembled the albinos of the Bhatti tribe in Pakistan . .

  19. I be required to back up and in fact require a glance at this, Carter said. A ultimate determination was expected by July fifteen.
