Storage tanks of Depaz rum distillery. Martinique

The recent announcement of plans by the present administration to build three (3) concrete tanks for a total cost of $12 Million Bds baffles. That’s a hell of a lot of money . Do tell us someone, are we about to be pouring four foot thick walls of solid concrete structure, with dimensions of 35 feet height  x radius 30 feet ? An engineer’s quest indeed to say the least and worthy of full praise if well executed.

The present tanks at the Harbour Rd. are made of steel and have lasted some fifty years or more and have adequately served their purpose. So what’s up with this building of new ones made of concrete? Has it anything to do with ‘veal cuts’ or pork chop cuts? Being in close proximity to a well known now closed watering hole, Porthole, could there be some rub off ? In that now decommissioned greasy joint, you could once get the sweetest and biggest pork chop on the island. However, nowadays Port Inc. once plumped stevedores have made committals to their wives to healthy living and longevity. Not so with these concrete proposal given  that we live in the Caribbean.

Is the cost of steel tanks, the only overriding factor as to why the choice of these new concrete novels? Sometimes life span  and maintenance considerations should out weigh cost. One should remember we live in the tropics and experience fluid temperature variations. Any learned fifth form lad doing physics at our secondary school would inform, that concrete expands as temperature rises (daytime) and contracts when the temperature drops (night time). Such expansion and subsequent contraction causes concrete side walks to crack. Were it not for some compensative measure, such as the placement of a piece of wood between slabs, to remedy this anomaly, (concrete’s coefficient of linear expansion) our side walks would be cracking up and warping. So much more(one would  believe) and this problem be amplified, given the circular shape of tanks. What is the popularity of concrete tanks used internationally anyway, for storing molasses or any product of such high viscosities (unlike H2O) yet another pertinent consideration?

Before we start pouring the duck grey derision ( hopefully not to form egg shells), one would hope a second and even third opinions would have been sought, for a $12 Million bad set  would be most unwelcome at this time. Especially when it is coming from money, “we didn’t have.”

  1. it is said that the DLP had a $500 a plate fundraiser set for the end of this mth. they could not get any tickets sell and they had to cancel the event.

this is just another way to get the funding they need for the campaign.

Has the Port Hole closed ?
If so what are the reasons for the closure ?
Talk about a watering hole for the underclass , it was top class for the underclass! Where will they gather now ?

12 million dollars is a lot of change
This concrete will be lined with gold dust , gold dust in somebody’s pocket. Pocket change for somebody. I believe that the money could have been better spent. Somebody is fooling somebody that we aint got money. When I look at advertised prices and when I hear about the amount of money being spent, somebody is fooling somebody. I dont compare America with Barbados and this is not a comparison but they just spent billions on the campaign in the states and you want to tell me that no money in the world is a problem, Stop trying to fool the people please.

  3. How can we be accurate in our evaluation of this project without specs of the project?

  4. I am always suspicious of these deals. The molasses that is made in Barbados is for the rum industry. Most of the molasses used in rum is imported. The industry is highly profitable and privately owned. Why is the government paying for this?

“this is just another way to get the funding they need for the campaign.”

Was the BLP elections campaign financed by the $5million which disappeared from the Vat Dept. just before the last General Elections?

  7. If the govt pays for it, will it receive storage charge? Why cant the Rum Industry constuct the tanks if they are to be used solely for that industry? I would like some information on why the govt will pay for their constuction as opposed to the Rum Industry.

  8. The tanks may be concrete but they are obviously designed with lots of steal.

  9. @ David

These tanks are result of Bjerkham/Tempro/Maloney agent, Darcy Boyce. Darcy brought this nasty shite thru the Infrastructure Committee of Cabinet as a project. The budget was 4 million dollars for are three (3) tanks but after Darcy, HH and Chris asked for a cut the price was increased to include for all of that plus some extra for good measure.

Ask what is the interest rate or ROI Preconco is earning? These are the most expensive molasses tanks every built anywhere in the WORLD.

Haman built the gallows that he was hanged on

As we near the election season in Bim and the DLP demitting office for 20 years, it should not be surprising to see every minister in this administration with a ministry, and even those without, getting hair brained projects approved in these last days.

I would understand OSA putting a premium on these molasses vats and moving the price from $4 million dollars to 12 million whu after all Alleyne Arthur does emanate from molasses and the contents of them vats is a national treasure to Owen

but this I below Darcy HH and Sinckler. I woulda expect Buffalo Sinckler to approve the expansion of de Souse Factory in Sin John not molasses vats! 3 Ito 8 is 2.6 recurring dat is alot uh pig fuh a nex pig Chris

Now follow me pun dis reasoning why in the middle of de rainy season you would award a contract to dig up de constitution fuh do highfaluting board walk effing you ent getting a kick back ! We only need a good rain and all uh town flood out. De fellows know dem gone so dem brekking fuh demselves

If de integrity legislation dat Thompson promise was to get pass, whichin it ent gine get pass, it would mean dat 95 percent of de DLP wud have to tek up residence at Dodds pun de very gallows dem build

Observe his column held a different position on the Sun today maybe nothing.

  14. @ David

    I always try to. lol

  15. What is the projected cubic capacity of these concrete tanks?

  16. From the above figures this works out to be 99,000 cubic feet, probably about the size of those redundant aviation fuel tanks in Oistins. The question is will we be manufacturing or importing that much molasses to fill these three tanks.
Ordinary steel tanks should have never been used in the first place to store any material that is earmarked for human consumption, and this includes both the mobile water tanker trucks and the fixed water tanks operated by the Barbados Water Authority. If these tanks are not kept topped up at all times with the liquid under storage , serious oxidation takes place in the form of heavy , and eventually scaly rust , on that area exposed to the atmosphere above the liquid level. Eventually the rust particles drop into the liquid. Stainless steel is preferred.

  17. By the middle of next year, regardless of which party is in power, there will not be a single Barbadian politician charged with corruption.

    That is an incontrovertible truth.

  18. @ Hants

    Neither one single businessman.

  19. CCC i notice you have not commented on the fact that the DLP could not get the $500 plates sell? or was i really right that you, a yardfowl, would not know?

  20. Carson will not say anything bad about the DLP. Maybe if he was paying more attention to his work at Accra and not writing so much shite here they would not have been so many items missing from the storeroom at accra.

  21. oh dear me.

  22. The Golden Tanks of Fontabelle…..$12 million for what ? That is bare Sh88te….somebody pockets gine swell….
Just here gasoline gone up last night too $3.50 per litre….have mercy,,, have mercy….people already bellys touching they backs…have mercy !….$ $12 Milion wha…a crying SHAME

  23. We have a great contributing engineering family posting on BU….If only we cud get some insights……wonder if anyone could find out the cost (landed) of stainless steel tanks like PHD….I hope those who will be using all this molasses playing they part…

  24. Onions, your self-proclaimed intellect should tell you that the walls of the tanks will be the same temperature as the contents, regardless of how hot it is on the day.

  25. And how about at nights.. Archimedes? I am no Einstein but is the problem to do with heating or cooling on the outside of the tanks as well? Something to do with alternating temp changes causing the molecular structure of the concrete to be stressed….call Charles Cyrus of the Min of Comm Science Dept….he good at explaining these things. Either way ..the COST is the factor here and the life span…a vicious prod. being pump in under HIGH PRESSURE from the ships bowels…will also into. Boyle Law..constituents..yet another hard core fish to fry….this aint a water tank we dealing wid…Peltdown….we need a engineer here….no Carson moniker

  26. Boyle’s Law

    P1V1T1 = P2V2T2…where

    P= pressure
    V= volume
    T= temperature

  27. You see steel tanks are more flexible and elastic to these factors which I find hard to believe some have not Garrionised…. (Rommell Sarge) the HC ‘desert fox’ should attest….

    Concrete Storage Tanks

Shay Murtagh Ltd is the market leader in the manufacture and installation of Pre-stressed & Post-tensioned Concrete Storage Tanks in the UK and Ireland.

This tank system is extensively used in the Water and Waste Water Industry and the company has undertaken thousands of Municipal and Industrial projects throughout Ireland and the UK with Local Authorities, Large Industry and Civil/Building Contractors.
The Storage Tank system can be used for a wide range of applications including,

    Water Storage Reservoirs,
    Aeration Tanks
    Clarifier/Settlement tanks
    SBR Tanks,
    Anoxic Tanks
    Picket Fence Thickener Tanks
    Slurry Storage Tanks

and can be obtained in capacities ranging from 35 cubic metres (7,700 gallons) to 15,000 cubic metres (3.30 million gallons).

………wonder why BU slow on this one….its a good thread

  29. Concrete tanks seems to be for lighter molecule liquids like water. Molasses and syrup tanks seems to be more suited to steel tanks.

  30. This is by no means the first time that concrete tanks will be used in Barbados to store molasses. Andrews Sugar Factory had a tank way back then ,at Olive Branch in Fisherpond St Thomas, where Goodwill Cricket Club used to play league cricket. Perhaps some of that mollasses or ” Ratta” is still there ,as with the many sugar factories then in operation, molasses was considered more or less a waste product and a bit of a nuisance to discard.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………
But you know the problem here of ‘landed ‘stainless steel tanks. The same people will object to the importation of these ready-made tanks, under the claim that they are able to build them locally, and if given the job, the end product will cost twice as much. Remember those buses some years ago that were brought in from Brazil some 90% completed, and when the local company finished installing the few panels that were left off, the cost of these locally finished units ,were higher than the fully completed ones brought in at the same time from Brazil.
    But this is politics.

    THIS IS A SICK GOVENMENT
    WHY A NON CANCELLABLE DEAL!!!!

    BARBADIAN

  37. First kerri’s salvo. Then Estwick’s vociferous rebuttal. Then kerri’s revelation. Now maloney’s “keep politics out” plea. Here’s the question. Are we paying 12 million for 3 tanks….or, are we leasing. 3 tanks at 2. Million a year for 20 years at a total cost of 40 million?

While I’m at it, big advocate headline “145000 additional arrivals for winter season”…..only to realise that these are “pass throughs” based on cruises only and not stop overs….

Those in “charge” really need to give this current generation a little more thinking credit. Honestly.

    Just observing.

I am surprised that Government after Government have downgraded the Ministry of Transport and Works (or by what ever name they keep changing it to) to Road Weeders, Tree Trimmers and Pothole Patchers, and has done nothing to updrade the skills and equipment to a new level where that department is able to operate like its predecessor Highways and Transport (H&T), which was the leading road and bridge builder in this country. Many of us travel over the Joes River Bridge, the one at the top of the East Coast Road. This bridge, built by H&T on the river bed ,was completed in 1954 to carry a whooping weight limit of 9 Tons. We see today, all day and 6 days a week, massive dump trucks with loads in excess of 30 tonnes of sand crossing this bridge, and except for some superficial damage the structure is as good as new. A lasting testimony to the skills of the artisans and labourers of Highways and Transport. Lets get back there and save the tax payers dollars.

How many pieces of litigation and arbitration does WOODBANK INVESTMENT LIMITED have going on? Is it 10 or 20, 30 or is it 40??? Why don’t you spend your time thinking about how you can salvage your reputation (if ever you had one worth salvaging) or the OCEAN REEF SUITES on Worthing Main road opposite the Police station?

you pay back richard edghill or richard carter the millions you borrowed from them?

  41. David,”How can we be accurate in our evaluation of this project without specs of the project?”

This is BU. Everybody think they are experts.

This is an example of where “transparency” would end the speculation.

We need the opinion of a competent structural engineer.

  42. @Observing

What we need is to see the dame RFP and agreement signed. Remove the political BS from the equation.

  43. David the specs are critical to this discussion because Concrete tanks of that size should have a liner.
But I ent nuh enjuneer alldoh I does be involve in tings an I does lissen an learn.

  44. @Hants

What we need is for politicians and their hacks to stop obfuscating the issue. The technical people have to tell us if the specs of cement tanks meet storage minimum for rum. PERIOD!

  45. @david
But maloney is quoting as saying that gov’t can’t afford to purchase up front and as such will opt for the lease….this flies in the face of Estwick’s mouthings as to the “true” cost. Let’s say that Kerri is indeed looking for cheap points, fine. But, the nature of the arrangement is now in question based on the Minister and the project manager’s lack of clarity and cohesiveness and apparent contradictory explanations.

Feels like deja vu. Do I hear the bells of Bagatelle ringing again???

Ef ya gine tief or try ta work a quick one at least give the public the respect of doing it or covering it up properly.
