By way of update of this matter, BU understands from our usual reliable sources that the previous Audi was written off two months before it’s 5 year lease ended after being involved in a bad accident.

MQI provided this replacement at the same lease payment as the last vehicle and same 5 year term using duty free price. We have been assured the arrangement did not cause the government to expend more – Barbados Underground

Which Statutory Board is it?

Can someone please tell me, why in this day and age when we as Barbadians have been asked to bear a higher VAT since December 2010 and higher taxes on gasoline and diesel and the Government is preaching restraint in spending that I can see a brand new black Audi  jeep with the registration ML634?

Pray tell me, which statutory body justifies purchasing this vehicle for its operations? I would like to know who gave the authorisation for whichever statutory corporation to purchase this HIGH END vehicle? A couple years ago we had a similar situation where the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic had purchased a BMW X5 for use by the messenger…a vehicle that costs over $250,000. A directive was subsequently given that this vehicle be sold….

Then we have to listen to the Central Bank Governor and the Minister of Finance lecture and talk down to us about the extravagance of Barbadians and the need to protect out foreign exchange reserves

Dear David I believe that i have the definitive answer for this matter that might besiege lesser persons like you and me.

Let us conjecture that the Audi was purchased by and through the Ministry of X, which is the ministry responsible for Y which from time to time in their substantive diurnal duties, does Z.

Why (not to be confused with Y) would you expect Minister of Chairman of the Board U (also not directly referring to you) when performing Z to drive a vehicle of lesser ilk than an Audi which you and I, and other taxpayers will ultimately have to pay for its insurance, road taxes and fuel bill.

If, and I only conjecture here, the vehicle is for a ministry like Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Finance, or other hallowed institution, it would not be fitting for de substantive Minister or Chairman, or de Board Secretary, to drive around any visiting delegates in “a lesser vehicle”, whuloss man, that might incur a next Moody’s stripe, most grievious, and even worse, gi we a reputation for being “breadfruit swappers”, besmirch Barbadus’ international reputation and bring all uh we into furder disrepute.

I respectfully suggest that this vehicle will not be sold, irrespective of your John Dilinger (and his smoking gun) protestations, given Y and/or why it was bought and for whom.

  8. It is unfathomable that at a time the government is pushing RE, cost management and the Governor highlighting that forex has dipped to 2008 level such extravagance would be the order of the day at a ministry which is under-performing.

  9. Are you guys CRAZY? Get with the program! The essential concept of working in Govt is to thief the peeps money and live the high life! If Bim going sink these are the fellas who are going to sit at the top of the life raft.

  10. Regarding the SJPP X5 wasn’t it left over from World Cup 2007 ? Didn’t BMW corp/goverment allowed sell to sjpp at duty free price and massive discount ( 50,000) ? Wasn’t it was originally meant for mechanic students to study but it was removed from this task ?

When in opposition the DLP promised that it would be sharing the “fatted calf” with all of those who stood the course. It is not like you did not know and then you are the same people to complain that the politicians don’t keep their promises. Well they kept this one!!!!

Given all this talk about renewable energy, weaning us off fossil fuels, fiscal propriety and protection of foreign reserves this administration continues to speak with a forked tongue and to shoot itself in its electoral foot. Why do we need these high powered vehicles in a 2×3 place with makeover cart roads? It is stupid things like this which make one wish that this country is eventually brought to book for its wasteful extravagance in these challenging times. Must the Foreign Exchange fly away and send more hard times before these idiots come to “Christian” understanding?

Dont you find that as strange? He can change from an BMW X5 to a $300,00.00 Audi SUV at the blink of an eye. And not a word from the BLP hypocrites on this blog.
He gave the legends $150,000.00US easy so. Yet the economy is going to collapse. Yet Tings bad, bad, bad, according to him.

it’s amazing that CC and AC choose not to see the substantive point about this post. It is this electoral arrogance that stifles the good will the DLP once had among the independent grouping, and even among some of their own….

    just observing

  28. It is a pity that Carson Cadogan continues with his rabib political ramblings.

I recently saw an SUV with “The Office of the Prime Minister” printed on its doors and wondered the need for an SUV for his office, hardly likely that it would be needed for any off road work – I can understand the need for such a vehicle for Transport, Health & Agricultre Ministries.

The largest Bajan owned Company in this Island – Goddards Enterprises – uses a Nissan march the smallesst Nissan made for its bearer to do his job, check and see the other cars driven by its management ranging from Sentras to X-trails.

  29. first of all not so observing and polluting. where are the facts to substantiate the above article which is devoid of any but substantial on ASSUMPTION! SUSPICION! PERSUMPTION that is my PERCEPTION!
anyhow i heard that under the dLP plans are in the works for renewable energy program with vision giving everymanjack a free ride back to the future by way of horse and buggy! low on gas for sure no emission problems got to like that

    Assumptions and Perceptions

    1. a 1/4 million dollar car is bought
    2. it bears government plates
    3. it would have been bought with taxpayer money
    4. there are other suitable vehicles at a fractino of the cost
    5. we are being asked to “hold strain” because things are tough
    6. we are being asked to promote RE and fuel efficiency

Given all those assumptions and perceptions (of which there may be more), my earlier comment stays.

“where are the facts” this coming from AC has to be the biggest joke of the year.

i hope AC, when the facts come, you are happy with them.

  34. Here we go again….perception, perception, perception. Tough economic times and any big purchase will surely evoke this type of response.
The sad thing that the BLP supporters here are not willing to admit is that the party that they are championing as the solution will do exactly the same thing but several times magnified.
Why do you think Noel Lynch is trying to get back in the house – to save taxpayers – please.

Let us challenge and critique expenditure where it can be restrained but do not get on a BLP political high horse to score cheap political points and forget that the issue of controlling spending has never been a BLP strongpoint.

  35. And the sad thing is that these luxury 4×4″s are not required to go off-road, at least not on Government’s business. But how come that the Government cannot find the resources to purchase proper purpose-built special-to-role ambulances , but could buy luxury cars for “private” use.At one time someone big at the QEH had the use of one of these luxury 4×4’s, parked all day outside the main entrance , while on the other side of the road, not one of the Ministry’s ambulances was available to respond to emergency calls.
I recalled in the early hours following the General Election in 1986, the newly elected PM, the Dipper, issued the instruction for all those driving similar government cars to either park them on the Garrison or take them to the nearest Police station. After the death of Mr Barrow it was business as usual. I remembered, shortly afterwards , seeing a Government Official, what ever that meant in this persons case, as he never appeared to have held down any job of substance , parking one of these luxury cars one weekend on Rockley, and strolling out of Chefette with an ice cream cone in his hand.
It is about time that the Government give the Central Purchasing Department the teeth to decide which vehicle is best suited for particular government departments. At present it seems as if the decision is left to the intended driver and the car salesman.
When Ms Thatcher took over as Prime Minister in Britain, she wanted a bigger kitchen in 10 Downing Street. The Ministry of Public Works/Environment inspected the premises and turned down her request, as they deemed what was in place was quite adequate.

! is it not you DLP who is telling the public that times are hard and we need to look at how we spend?

  37. I also saw quickly after a general election,an ex high ranking official, who previously had two government Mercedes Benzs at his disposal resorting to using his old compact car, and literally searching for small change in his pockets at the gas station to buy petrol.

    Carson,

only people like you could bring race into the discussion. If it is leased then presumably, the lease company is not a charitable organisation and has to produce a return on its investment. Oh! but wait, could this vehicle have been procured through the new subsidiary NIS Leasing Limited?

  41. “After the death of Mr Barrow it was business as usual.”
there was no change in the policy either before or after Mr Barrow. Apart from frothing at the bit in the interest of political gimmicktry, Mr Barrow never changed the policy.

  42. 1. a 1/4 million dollar car is bought

    6. we are being asked to promote RE and fuel efficiency
    @observing
Do you know that all of the above mentioned is fact ?
could it not possibly be a demo used by the government for promotion of the car for a short period of time. a govt which has so far shown restraint and has tried to lead by example in areas of expenditure would be shooting itself in the foot to recklessly spend money on luxury automobiles at taxpayers expense which would send the wrong message to the public i think the gvt would be aware of the public outcry before going on a spending spree however i have not heard such a similar outcry from the BLP operatives in reference to the overblown and politically opportunistic budget choc full of freebies and giveaways planned by the BLP goverment hopefully NOT in the event of regaining power.in the mean time BU has given enough publicity to the promotion of the car that makes me the lowly want to go out and buy one, maybe that was the idea behind all this hoopla simply free advertising of a product in an area that would generate enough publicity seems to me that it has worked.

I ask again why would David Rice need to be in a $445,0000 vehicle in these hard times when The Hon Freundel Stuart is advocating wage restraints,no relief in the Budget for the poor, and no money for spurring the economy on ESPECIALLY at an election time. IT JUST DOES NOT MAKE SENSE…..
Why tourism is not performing……who will he be meeting during the next six months ? Is Royalty coming again ?Why David Rice….does it make sense to you?……Is this a Joke or are the DEMS all out just to show TOTAL DISDAIN for the electorate?Has the GLOBAL RECESSION ceased and Barbados have received a Bail out from CSME like Greece…?

You really let them set you up like this ?Man when the people see you hereafter….. you is now the laughing stock of the community…or you just gine drive it after elections and hope everybody forget this when voting and it still gine b yours ?

    JOKERS TEKK OVA !

  47. @ac

We have established from BU records and we know from seeing Rice in his green luxury vehicle before the change that ML634 is assigned to the BTA. In fact for the purpose of this blog it does not matter. Therefore given how the road tax procedure works in Barbados one can legitimately conclude that the new vehicle is NOT a show vehicle.

  48. O.k David

anyhow the record still has to set straight as to the cost of the vehicle and how much the govt if so purchased it for. so far all we have is speculation but no concrete proof of the purchase price. or do you know that if so reveal .

  49. @ac

The issue here is more that the cost of the vehicle which the government got at duty free rate anyway. It is the appearance of extravagance at a time when the government is having financial problems. It is the fact this is a luxury vehicle will require high running cost e.g. insurance, servicing etc.

  50. now to use a word which has been used skilfully by the BLP operatives to bring attention. “PERCEPTION:” which leads to presentation is barbados selling luxury through the promotion of the BTA for tourism i would ventured to say that the vehicle is possibly used for transporting high ranking officials from other countries who are in the country for the purpose of doing business for the tourist industry just another perc for the hotel industry who would rather the govt pay for the hotel accommodation as well as transportation for some who are in the country doing business on their behalf for sure the hotel industry would not want such guest to be driving around in Toyota’s or even horse back riding back and forth to different business meetings . ask adrian since he knows just about every thing tourism
