Well Done Donville Inniss

Caswell Franklyn, Head of Unity Workers Union

It is not often when I feel compelled to put pen to paper to compliment a government minister. That is for several reasons but mainly because they usually have their adoring public that tells them what they want to hear, not necessarily the truth; and because they rarely do anything that deserves honourable mention. However, Minister of Health, Donville Inniss has done something that is worthy of praise.

I am specifically referring to the simple act of turning up and showing support for officers who were overseeing a cleanup at Furniture Limited. That gave the Environmental Health Officers the confidence to do their job without fear. In circumstances such as that cleanup operation, the officers would be performing their duties, someone would call a senior person in the ministry and the inspectors would be called off. The Minister’s presence not only said to the officers, do your duty, I got your backs: it said to others, it is a waste of time calling any senior person because the most senior person in the Ministry has given his blessing to the Environmental Health Officers.

That simple act might seem small to many but it sent a powerful message to those inspectors who have been demoralised for years because they were taking flack for not doing their duty, but in reality they were prevented by political interference and could not say so.

In the past, I have been critical of Minister Inniss when he made disparaging remarks about civil servants. I think that it is only fair when he does something positive that he should be commended. His actions in this regard go a long way in redeeming him in my eyes. Well done Donville Inniss, unfortunately for him, I live in the constituency of St. Thomas.

  1. Donville is sincere hard working kind man with a good head on his shoulders.
I extend my congratulations to him on a job well done.

  2. He showed them who was boss and did the job in a most admirable way, indeed I have been one criticizing the ministry of turning a blind eye to the completely nasty, a fire hazard and unsafe store, it never crossed my mind that the inspectors were prevented from do their job, but it should have been quite obvious. Their next job is to monitor the bowling alley since that is a one door operation and if a fire breaks out you can well imagine what would happen

  3. @ Caswell

Casa Grande should be demolished. It is an eye sore and looks like has not be been too well built. Other than that the place is also musty and even my teenage son refuses to eat anything from there.

    • If any reasonable person scans the surroundings at Furniture Limited, it is with great difficulty that the same person would want to eat at Casa Grande.

  4. I agree totally with Caswell on this one. Donville is to be highly commended. He is again showing that he has that he has much of what it takes to lead this country. The only one on the DLP side so far.

  5. DLP Donville gone for DLP Ram………..what ya telling me…..at Election time…man doan mek me laugh ..a even a blind man could see thru this….Mr . Photo OP…..never missing a chance to get in the lime light….Exactly what will be done when after all the commotion anyway….Do you really believe anything can be done to that Ole musty warehouse..other than total demolition, worthy of healthy environment solutions ? Mrs.Ram said it herself…..plans in future to build a new mall. In the future is the ting..when ?

  6. Whether it was a photo op or not no previous minister in the 40 year existence of Furniture Limited has had the balls to deal with the lady in the sari.

  7. What balls you talking bout David….can’t you see it as a sham ….wait and see next 2 weeks Ram warehouse going remain in D SAME STATE…..a state of spontaneous combustion….(if we get more hot days.)..If Donville really wants to help the people do like Estwick and ask for some much needed relief on the Drugs surcharge in the next Budget…or he too gine resign…..now we talking balls..

  8. Bearing in mind the complete lack of action on that building for the past 30 years, I’m surprised that Onions is commenting at all. If everyone led clean and unsullied lives, that woman could have no influence at all. Steupse!

  9. @Onions

Perhaps citizens like you within the political network would add you voice in the days to come to ensure the concerns you have sounded reverberate in the right places.

On the subject of drugs, is it true the drugs are free at public pharmacies?

Is it true that private pharmacies are disgruntled because their sales have dropped although their margins on the drugs have increased?

To many of these private pharmacies have made millions on the back of successive governments, right Mr. Gill?

  10. @check it out
He’s getting there. Not quite there yet though.

    @caswell
Must commend you for giving jack his jacket

    @onions
Don’t you have a tossed salad or a gravy to go and flavour? Leff d man and he “photo op.”. Or let us start talking about dale, george and the “one bite” breadfruit. Or the infamous “hug.” Or Mia’s dockside appearance a few months ago. 6 is half dozen.

  11. Can’t a ordinary Onion not be so open as to offer a view without being quelled “holier than holly”….”clean and unsullied “…The extent to be able voice a concern of tings going wrong.. and need to be corrected FAST.An Onion came here originally in the interest of those CLICO policyholders and pensioner who were down right unfaired n robbed…by who should know better….but No….is silence Oh Onions…”you black christian.”…”you partisan dupe”….Till the day CLICO makes amends to all ..till the day this Admin is HUSH no more..till the day old people being punished for putting confidence in a company said to be safe are redressed…..Onions going out to the wicket n bat……no hush hush…..this admin or the next.

  12. @David

That one was a low blow. It is ovious that you are becoming frustrated with onions bias tripe, but who is Mr. Gill?

    @Onions

i think you should take a rest from the blog, you have not been adding anything to the discourse on any subject for a while. You had promised to stay away but I belive that a “gillotine” is needed to prevent you from wrting the ignorance you subject us to.

    @Caswell

This is the first time I agree with you without reservation. I think Mr. Inniss has done a good job as Minister of Health. He has the interest of Barbadians at heart. Wish more Ministers could be like him. I would advise Dennis Lowe to look out for the Barbadian interest and not his or the williamses. I gone bosie.

  13. @ Blooger
You hear dat.?…he don’t even know who is Mr. Gill… I tell ya
    Wrong is wrong…deal wid it

Caswell I appreciate your article Page 7a..Sunday Sun June 3rd…this explains the reason for the Waterman Commission of Inquiry….now this was worth posting instead.

  14. Also in for high praise is the entire DLP cabinet, MP and Senator who turned out at the ceremony at the Garrison last evening to see our services put on an excellent display and it show cased our youth as well in a most positive and uplifting way.

Well done to the government and people of Barbados for an outstanding presentation last evening.

It is a pity the opposition BLP did not see the national interest as they stood away from attending the event, when I speak of a boycotting of the event neither the representatives of either house were on hand and the one that did attend left before they got half way in the first part of the program.

  15. Fuh sure the DLP don.,t need any advice from the BLP meely mouths whose only advice would be create anomosity and division among the ranks. THANKS! but NOTHANKS! they can save the advice for the thiefand chief OSA

  16. Observing

I always give jack his jacket but sometimes you people want me to launder it before I hand it over.

  17. Also in for high praise is the entire DLP cabinet, DLP MP’s and all the DLP senators who turned out at the ceremony at the Garrison last evening to see our services put on an excellent display and it showcased our youth as well in a most positive and uplifting way.

Well done to the government and people of Barbados for an outstanding presentation last evening.

It is a pity that the opposition BLP could not elevate themselves to a higher being and did not see the national interest as they stood away from attending the event, when I speak of a boycotting of the event neither the representatives of either houses of parliament were on hand and the one that did attend left before they got half way in the first part of the program

  18. Good morning to all my DLP stalwarts you are in fine tune .KEEP IT UP! poor onions reminds me of a dog trying to catch its tail maybe all the good news is beinging to make him dotish!

  19. Leff d man and he “photo op.”. Or let us start talking about dale, george and the “one bite” breadfruit. Or the infamous “hug.” Or Mia’s dockside appearance a few months ago. 6 is half dozen.

Now that the staff going home until Christmas……..all because of a Photo OP ??? 20-30 people going have no jobs …just because of a picture perfect….? Man you guys are strange bedfellows…..

  20. Salt Sack relax and come to grips with the reality that they way Arthur looking he ain’t going to lead or will be unable to lead that bunch of crooks into any election, he is a sad excuse of man looking angry with the world not a friend to call a true friend, and even worst for you is that his feebleness is growing worst day by day.

You see him having the will or the ability to handle 5 weeks of hard campaigning?

He can’t handle a two week exercise furthermore a 5 week one.

Who will kill who within the BLP for the role of leader of the opposition thru to 2018?

    • Tell It Again

It is not good for you and others to be constantly reflecting on Arthur’s state of health. Today you can appear to be in good health and the next you can be on your way to the mortuary. In any event, if the saying that only the good die young holds true for Arthur, he would celebrate his 120th birthday above ground sipping a drink with the President of the Co-operative Republic of Barbados.

  21. And to think that the BLP wants to be in control and shows no respect towards their miltary GOOD LORD In all countries the services are treated with respect their are the eyes and ears of a free democracy and to think that the oppsition could not have been bipartisian on a special occasion like this is mindblowing. but not surprising

    • Onions would wake up when someone dies from leptospirosis.

  22. You on a roll today frankly! True Arthur has set himself up with astonishing excellence to be heads and shoulders above all who have come before him and maybe we’ll be those who come after him to be the most power hungry savage for the Treasury funds and lonely experience PM this island will ever have seen.

Not even his recently found children are willing to cheer him on, and as you will see his most recent child bearing mother is now a thing of the past as she goes no where with him anymore because of his mistreatment of the lady, it is widely reported that he is drinking very heavily and his wife had to seek a friends help to get her medical attention about two months ago.

Is this something that even a pack of wild dogs could want to lead them furthermore something that a country could want near to leadership even as an opposition leader, I hardly this so.

  23. @Onions

Let us understand you right. We should allow a rat infested place to exist because of the possibility 20 jobs may disappear?

  24. “This is the first time I agree with you without reservation. I think Mr. Inniss has done a good job as Minister of Health”
can’t dismiss onions’ view totally especially with elections around the corner but unfortunately it must be considered to be speculative whereas the fact of the matter is that minister inniss must be commended for visibly throwing his support behind the environmental health officers. with respect to whether he is doing a good job all i have to say is that now i have to pay a dispensing fee for my generic drugs wherasi did not pay this fee before and to access non-generic drugs is an extremely expensive exercise.

  25. You see him having the will or the ability to handle 5 weeks of hard campaigning?”
mr arthur despitehis feebleness is not known to have fainted at any official function before or in recent times. observe that mr stuart is promoting his illegitimate daughter as did mr arthur in the dying days of his last term.

  26. The action taken by the Environmental Division is nothing to do with the current Minister of Health. It’s the Law of Barbados.Once the Division is notified especially in writing of an existing condition that is inimical to the health of the worker and the general population they will act and do so fearlessly because the Law gives them the power and the authority. The Minister dare not get in their way. There are some fearless public officers who respect authority but are not afraid of anyone such that the late Prime Minister Barrow threw up his hands in frustration when confronted by this ‘ leviathan’ and referred to them as an army of occupation. These are the unsung heroes of this nation.Headteachers, nurses, policemen, health officers, customs officers, immigration officers, admin officers, postmen, firemen etc who carry out the law fairly and fearlessly everyday. They are not looking for votes. They have families who might be affected by the unclean and unsavoury acts of people who do not have the interest of this country at heart, who hold another passport.

    • Richard King (11:48) & Eric Jerome D (1:30)

Ordinarily I would agree with you but the situation in Barbados is anything but ordinary. Since you live on Mars or Jupiter, let me explain what has been happening here on Earth.

Over the years in our little section called Barbados politicians have inserted themselves in everything that should not concern them. In this case Inniss is merely undoing years of damage caused by political interference. Maybe after his intervention things would go back to how you are accustomed there on Mars and Jupiter.

Give the man some credit and wait until he slip up the next time and then you can criticise. I am only sorry that Town Planning is not part of his portfolio.

  27. @David

I have to agree with you and ask if Richard King lives in Barbados. Any pUblic officer not cooperating with a Minister suffer the consequences, especailly in the area of upward mobility. I could recall a few years ago, a Senior Officer in the Ministry of Public Works stood up to OSA on an issue when he was recommended to act, OSA did not approve his acting. A neighbour of OSA was prevented from acting Deputy Pernament Secrtary, that lady recognized that she was targeted and is now a prasticing attorney.

  28. @Balnce

Mr. arthur has more than one child born out of wedlock, aint it?

Clearly you want to talk just for talking sake, I use the Govt’s pharmacies and i dont have to pay a dispensing fee, so u have a choice. Use the Govt pharmacies or pay the dispensing fee and shut up u JA.,

  29. @all

I would like us to stop refering to OSA’s health, we know not when our time is near. I had to scold the scout and prodigal for constantly referincing the man’s illness.

Lets us concentrate on the BLP’s misappropiation of funds during his tenure, among other things if we wnat to paint him in bad light.

  30. @onions

They will get un-employment and that might be a blessing in disguise. For your information, this govt has extended the unemplyment benefit, i think, to atleast forty weeks.

Dont you think that all things would have been considered; that is the pros and the cons before a decision was taken. I hope u did not raise your children not to think logically. You, Balance, Enuff et al are sore losers. Come with something and not your usual diatrite.

    @David

how do i get to spell check what I have written while blogging. I dont write in Words and them copy.

  31. @AC

Yah got the by the balls. Their response so feeble you would like to ignore them, but knowing, they are glutton for punishment so we must not let up and punish them with inpunity. forgive mah if a spell any words wrong because a dont have a dictionary with mah.

  32. I found it strange that the minister was there.
    What is going on here
Why is the Minister interferring with the process
    This foolishness should stop now
There was no need for Innis to be there. The over dramatizing of the situation is dangerous, instructive and should be discouraged

  33. Eric Jerome

The Minister is responsible for Health and he can go where there is a haelth matter. Is that all you have to say. Swallow your pride and commend his ministry for its action.

  34. Look Blogger 2012 or whoever you are… why don’t you stop trying to play DLP cockroach bully with everyone ?…Why no other overseas politico seems as affected as you are…maybe you or someone close seems to be in position to lose their PICK…. self proclaimed million mole man….No wonder you getting on like AasK plug if ever they be one…. 35. @ David
Let us understand you right. We should allow a rat infested place to exist because of the possibility 20 jobs may disappear?
    ********************************
Nah David……I am all for the place to be torn down (ck the other thread)….as for the jobs…they should be taken care off by NIS ..(if their is any money left). This is what I hear….When the officers came down on the premises…Ram called Donville….Donv being voter smart….opted to side with the most votes….and break rambo beak…lol…As a staff member says she did hiding wid a newspaper at one point from the pictures ..and Donv did doing an impromptu interview for the cameras…getting the full expose’

  36. My position is CLEAR……since this one went on for eons….why now the hullabulloo ? Answ: photo OPs ….

  37. @Onions

The voters will decide if they want the DLP or the DLP, and i will retain my pick. So come again gilly.

  38. @onions

Who bell the cat? You remember the story who will bell the cat? There are times when tough decisions must taken. The Nation’s health is more important than politcal consideration as there is an economic cost.

  39. @Onions

cock roach can be a viable business you remember the cock roach business that I thaink it was Jeanette Laye-Claarke who had pecilled it. It was lucrative, want it. Do You want to join me, i have room for people like you.

  40. Look Blogger 2012
.. that comment was not directed to you….as far a you and I am concern…..stay to your end of the fence., I mine… you are not deserving of my time nor thoughts….( it will be ignore hereon..comprende) ..PO

  41. now that the gates have been thrown open, the MOHealth need to close down all the filthy unsafe junks that that dog has been operating for many years. it is a pity that black leaders could be bought for money. any idiot knows that those environmental health officers were being prevented from the top from doing their job.. i cannot stand the Minister of Health, never will either, but he has belled the rodent. good job… he needs to check that rat infested ‘motel’ she has in st. philp, if it is still there and that unsafe amusement park with ONE SINGLE DOOR. it galls me when i see people l proudly taking family and friend to such stinking unsafe places. me and my family refused to patronized her establishment, we are above that

  42. @onions

ignore me or not i will comment on things you write if you talk shoite. I recognize that you cant stand my heat and hence you plan to sat out of the kitchen, you coward.

  43. @AC

yah see how i got old onions retreating, yah got to show up their ignorance when they write nonsense. Hope you get him to retreat like how I have done.

  44. You are so right onions, for the last four and a half years the Minister found no problem with the state of Furniture Ltd and with out any warning the Environmental Health department turn up at the door with the Minister watching their backs and giving them all the support that they needed. How arrogant can you be? I to condemn the state of Furniture Ltd and any one in their right thinking mind will do the same but I ask one question what was the Minister position before last Friday on this matter. Good show Mr Minister but we got ya.

  45. @ Tell it again

You must be very careful how you speak, the last person who place a shelf – life on an individual now lie six feet under, and was much younger and healthier we thought than that individual . Take guidance from Caswell he seem to be much more intelligent than you are.

  46. @ Tell it………….You see him having the will or the ability to handle 5 weeks of hard campaigning?

He can’t handle a two week exercise furthermore a 5 week one.

Who will kill who within the BLP for the role of leader of the opposition thru to 2018?…………………………

You could really hush up. Whose leader collapse at a political meeting? Which leader fainted in public? Which leader fainted at the official residence?

  47. @ Tell it…………”Also in for high praise is the entire DLP cabinet, DLP MP’s and all the DLP senators who turned out at the ceremony at the Garrison last evening to see our services put on an excellent display and it showcased our youth as well in a most positive and uplifting way”……………..

You have a convenient memory. So I cannot expect you to remember that the dead king and his merry men never attended ANY official functions under the BLP…not independence parades at the Garrison or in the Port, not the awards at Government House nor receptions at Ilaro Court. So hush up. Not that I am condoning not attending official functions but you Dems are in no position to throw stones. Damn hypocrites!

    • @Prodigal

You see this is what the Independents are tired of. They did it, you do it,,,sigh.

  48. @Pridigal

could you remember me brining to your attention that referincing DT’s death was in poor taste. I am happy you recognize that it is folly to talk about a persons illness as we do not know what is waiting for us. Thus you and all persons here should desist with this stupidness. Today for you, and tomorrow for me.

  49. @ Eric Jerome D | June 5, 2012 at 1:30 PM |

I found it strange that the minister was there.
    What is going on here
Why is the Minister interferring with the process
    This foolishness should stop now
There was no need for Innis to be there……………..

I agree with you. Dont mind the DLP yard fowls, the officers showed up after numerous complaints by the staff. She then called the minister to call off the officers but even he was alarmed at what he saw.

So it was not that he was doing no good job, he was called to halt the inspection. What could he do when the officers were already there??? ……call them off and cause a scandal, no, go along and make it look like he is the knight in shining armour!

    Hypocrite!

  50. @Prodical

The result is waht matters, you should be last person to talk about yeard fowl, how would you like to called the african snail..

  51. Min. Inniss has stood heads and shoulders above his leader in showing how to handle a situation. Is it that the min is sending a message to his leader, twice FS dissed Inniss, once with the non-nationals receiving free medication and secondly by the P.M saying he saw nothing wrong with Sir Roy’s statement. Both of these went contrary to Inniss public statements. This time the Min has shown the P.M how to handlke a serious matter, with a silent touch of authority. Well done Min Iniss, go to the head of the class.

  52. I wondered why environmental health officers paid by my tax dollars were cleaning up a private for profit business place. I believe that this is a misuse of the taxpayers money.

Business places should be required to clean up their establishments using money out of income earned by the business.

    What next?

My yard is filthy dirty, because I haven’t felt like cleaning it or paying to have it cleaned for the past 20 years. Will be Ministry of health send men and machines to clean up my nastiness?

And if the Ministry is willing to do this what incentive to I have to do my own cleaning or to pay somebody to clean for me.

  53. Quotin David “with the lady in the sari”

How do you know that Ms. Ram is a lady?

    I see a woman in a sari.

Dear David: I remember a trial once, where a man was testifying and he referred to his black girlfriend through the trial as a woman, and to his white girlfriend as a lady. By the way neither female was on trial, he was and he was no gentleman. Rape charge if I recall correctly.

  54. @Balance

observe that mr stuart is promoting his illegitimate daughter as did mr arthur in the dying days of his last term
    ****************

I guess you come from a different era. The term “illegitimate” to describe children of parents who were unmarried when the child was born has faded into history in many countries. It is not the child’s fault thus the negative connotation of “illegitimate” should not be applied to him or her. Many countries also recognize common law unions and the children of such unions are not considered “illegitimate” even if their parents did not have a civil or religious ceremony to cement their union.

So “Balance” take that term and bury it, please don’t apply it to individuals.

  55. @Scout

Did I single out Stuart’s or Arthur’s children? I asked “Balance” not to apply the term “illegitimate” to individuals.

  56. Maybe the PM should marry a nice wife who can help him manage his medical issues (diabetes?) from at home with regular healthy meals, medication, and regular exercise.

Diabetes in the middle aged is actually not very hard to manage, but it requires strict attention to the patient’s meals, medicine and exercise.

    Just a non-partisan suggestion.

  57. I must commend Donville Innisss even though this job was 20 years late. Yes I agree that the upcoming election may have motivated the Minister to act BUT he is the only one in that party who seems to have some balls.

Onions you are extremely selfish and ignorant hypocrite who pretends to be a learned person.

I am pon holiday so I will be posting sporadically.

Random I do hope that the environmental ministry will recuperate the cost of this exercise from the owners Mrs Ram and company. Going by the filthy state of her business premises it tells everyone that She is a dirty and nasty individual.

  58. @islandgal
“he is the only one in that party who seems to have some balls”

So we have a “ballsless” party in operation? 🙂

  59. They are indeed “balls less”.

They got together secretly to plot and plan to bring down the PM, went to the GG to get him to move the PM. When the Nation who likes a good scoop got hold of the plot, they all back down and left Sinckler holding the can after he denied that he had any knowledge of the plot, only what he read in the Nation. Bloodly liar. He thinks that he is a maguffy who thinks that he can disrespect Owen Arthur every time Owen goes into the House.

An economic neophyte like Chris Sinckler.

  60. Penis Son, Arthur is not a saint and does not have to be worshipped as you must do.

Actually a man who has no decency and cannot acknowledge his own flesh and blood his own children is a disgusting despicable beast not deserving of anyone’s respect.

  61. There is sooo much news stories about OSA that can be brought, why lick a dead horse by repeating the same things over and over since 2007. It’s time the DLP come to grips with being in government and act that way. The BLP should be the ones playing “catch-up” but it seems they have the Dems looking for new issues and can’t find any. It seems the BLP is the one with all the NEW news.

  62. You is rite, Islandgal.

PS. I have run out of room on google online albums and I am looking for alternative free storage. Any recommendations?

  63. Owen Arthur – “yesterday’s man trying to operate in today’s world”
A truer statement could not have been said in Parliament.

  64. If your ratty gets all scatty ‘cos his coat is getting matty
And he’s acting kinda batty now he doesn’t look so natty
If he starts to get all chatty and to voice pratty demands
Then beware! You’ve got a bratty tatty ratty on your hands.

After me so as you never saw!
And I chiefly use my charm
On creatures that do people harm,
    The mole and toad and newt and viper;
And people call me the Pied Piper.”

What should be clear to all Barbadians is that the BLP in the mid 1990s came into office in an environment when the world economy was growing and improving and that the DLP in 2008 faced a global economy in deep recession. Our economic growth and buoyancy is directly tied to our trading partners because after all that is where our tourism receipts and foreign inflows which drive this Barbados economy come from. There is nothing special about the BLP on economic management. Look at the facts and not the spin!

  69. To Mr./Mrs Random Thoughts, why do you suppose the work done to that “opportunist” /Slave driver/above Barbadian Laws, from where ever she came from, store is for free ? do you not know that the same Gov, of Barbados, who the land tax department is accountable to, can and should be attaching the “clean up bill” to her 2012 taxes ? Thats how it is done here in Canada.
