The Late Sir Grantley Herbert Adams (l) The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow (r)

Do not castigate me.ย  I have only asked a question for debate, in an effort to tease out what should be well known to political activist and perhaps aย  section of the electorate.ย  I put it to you, if there is ideological difference between the major political parties in Barbados, that difference should be easily identified.ย  Perhapsย  should be addedย  I do not mean simply a form of words, unless those words have been followed by actions over time.ย  Neither do I mean that since the DLP or BLP failed to deliver on a manifesto pledge, that simple act sets them apart.ย  It might give an elector reason to support a particular party, but it is not necessarily ideological difference.

If there is difference how is that difference perceived by the electorate and can it be quantified by electoral support.ย  The general election is only around the corner, a prudent activist or politician will use – or perhaps – should use any opportunity available to set out their stall and say what lies behind the fine suit and the cohoblopot of jokes that have become a mask for policy.

Is it the case that over the years it can be demonstrated by actions taken, that the respective parties here identified have stuck to their ideology and thus changed the face of Barbadian society for the better.ย  If they have failed to pursue aspects of any stated ideology when in Government, why not.

“Perhaps” – it is debatable – that in broad terms the majority of “major” changes which have taken place in Barbados over the years have not been in the interest of a major section of the electorate.ย  Is there something peculiar about Barbadian society, that makes an ideology geared to the major section of society unattainable.

Unless we are able to discuss such issues; there will always be evasion and unwritten codes defined by the expectation that people should keep quiet.

Could it be that we have become so conditioned, that it is mentally challenging to break out from a defined position whatever our educational achievements and that definedย  position is not made by us but by a subtle input from some quarters.ย  Thus we inhabit a social straight-jacket subliminal tightened and maintained by a few.

A problem can only be solved when it has been identified and there is a realization that only action can address it.

Here is an opportunity for those who are active in politics – and there are many who regularly contribute here – to say why they support a particular party and how over the years that party by issues they have tackled; been constant in addressing the “major ” problems in Barbadian society.

When Errol Barrow, in the changing of the barbados constitution in the 70โ€ฒs, declared that money should be taken from the rich bajan white people to support the poor black bajans, wasnโ€™t that a blatant racist remark? was he sensored for it? Get your facts
When Errol Barrow told Grantley Adams to bring legislation for free education to assist the poor black bajans, and Grantley asked who would cut the white people canes, wasnโ€™t that a racist remark? Was either of them sensored?

    3. MP’s reflect the thinking of the society.

    Conclusion: Barbadians are racists.

….. apart from a few muted voices in Parliament who shouted “racist” the only person man enough to take on the status quo was Chris Sinkler.

He stood tall above the masses.

That took guts, and he isn’t even the leader of any party in Parliament.

    Good for him.

…. and here I was thinking and saying all of them are a bunch of clowns.

Just shows that you can’t generalise about any one group of people!!

There is always one that surprises you.

In future I will have to preface my remark with (save and except Chris Sinkler) ….

…. unless he goes and does something stupid between now and then!

ร‚ยถ1. Post requests funding to replace our existing two
    (2) LGP roving patrol vehicles that have exceeded their
    life-cycle:

    –A) Vehicle No. 1

    –C) Original purchase price:

    (1) Vehicle No. 1 – US $28,335.00
    (2) Vehicle No. 2 – US $28,335.00

ร‚ยถ2. Post’s two (2) roving patrol vehicles have
surpassed their normal life expectancy for a patrol
    vehicle.

ร‚ยถ3. Due to extreme wear caused by poor road conditions
in Barbados, operational coverage is being affected.
The existing patrol vehicles have experienced
significant amounts of “down time”. Both vehicles are
currently in the shop for major mechanical repairs.
During the life of both vehicles, repairs have
    included:

–A) Rebuilt motor, gear box, several clutch
replacement, steering and alignment, shocks, body work,
hoses and fuses and tire replacements.

–B) Total repair and maintenance costs from 2004 to
    present:

    (1) Vehicle No. 1 – US $14,214.00
    (2) Vehicle No. 2 – US $13,609.00

    ร‚ยถ4. On November 2, 2005, ARES Security Group’s
President informed Post management that the local guard
roving patrol drivers have reported near accidents due
to the Isuzu pick-up’s light rear end (ref. A).
Barbados streets are frequently slippery due to the
    numerous days of tropic rains.

ร‚ยถ5. Gasoline cost in Barbados is 55% higher than the
cost of diesel fuel. As a result, the purchase of a
foreign made diesel vehicle will result in a savings of
several thousands of dollars per year in fuel costs.

ร‚ยถ6. The following are vehicle purchase quotes,
    including Cost/Insurance/Freight (CIF) from local
    dealers and RPSO/Tokyo (ref. B):

    –C) Toyota (Landcruiser) – US $40,000.00 (Local
    Dealer)
    –D) Nissan (Patrol) – US $40,750.00 (Local

NOTE: The cost of a locally procured vehicle (similar
to Toyota Land Cruiser) (same specs as provided to
    RPSO/Tokyo) is almost US$6,000 higher than RPSO/Tokyo’s
    quote.

ร‚ยถ7. If post is authorized replacement roving patrol
vehicles, the two current roving patrol vehicles will
be transferred to GSO for disposal.

    ร‚ยถ8. ACTION REQUESTED:

–A) Post requests authorization to purchase two (2)

amount of USD 68,000 will be needed to pay for the
cost, insurance and freight (CIF) from Tokyo to

GLINE CLARKE should hold a press conference by this evening and apologize to all WHITE BAJANS for his stupid racist statements.

Before this thing goes any further. By the time white bajans write to their tour operators and tour wholesalers friends in America and England we will see a significant drop in tourism meaning less foregin exchange for the country when we need every cent we can get our hands on.

All he has to do is tell the truth, he and “seethru” had one too many before the debate and he ended up talking foolishness. Although I really don’t believe that.

I think that it was a calculated attempt by the Barbados Labour to vilify white people and at the same time to damage the Barbados economy in their efforts to regain the Government.

I don’t put anything pass this wicked Barbados Labour Party.

By that I take you to mean that we have become racist because we have been educated to be racist.

  11. BT

Please note that I went to Harrison College for free and received no such formal education while I was there.

  12. @John

Our individual filters are all molded by how we were socialized.

  13. David

    You got it.

    It is education informally given.

Gline Clarke and the speaker are giving lessons to those dumb enough to accept the lessons as education.

These two guys are regurgitating what they have been informally educated to believe.

    They cannot help it.

    Liz did the same.

They are dinosaurs, ultra conservatives, unable to think for themselves and programmed to regurgitate the rubbish thet have been fed in their formative years.

They cannot conceive that they have harmed their country or that they have taken racist positions.

    Technology today is brutally unforgiving.

They are on the record and they cannot get off it.

All the apologies in the world cannot get them off that record.

In time Hansard will be available to be searched by keyword.

It may be even possible that historians will in due course isolate the period and origins of the informal education that led to the formation of the minds that created these racist comments.

  14. @ John
By that I take you to mean that we have become racist because we have been educated to be racist.

    ***********************************
1 – it is through education that we largely become who we are.
2 – ‘formal’ education is often NOT the major influence in the lives of most people.

    so….
Come on John, get past the emotion and let us re-look this touchy subject. You know that you will always get a different perspective from the bushman.

1 – How is it ‘racist’ for a man to refer to a club of rich white boys as ‘rich white boys…’? Do you mean racist or TACTLESS?

2 – Why is it wrong for an opposition member to question why a government would wish to put large resources into an organization of well-off citizens? especially after the $19M Turf Club Tax scam?

…OK so it turns out that the Minister Of Finance erred with the name of the subject club – but explain exactly what was wrong with the question.

White people in Barbados seem to be particularly sensitive to anyone referring to them as such….. wonder why?

Finally John, you must know that ‘discrimination’ cannot be defined by someone asking a question of FACT?
    What racist what??!!

Racism is about actively denying people their due rights because of their race. It is about hoarding resources in such a manner as to ensure that some persons enjoy an unfair benefit based on their race…..

Gline Clarke don’t have a racist bone in his whole body – LOL -not even among the many in his head.- ask the 3S people.

Stop stirring up a storm in a teacup do!….. that is the most sensible question that Gline ever asked in the house.

  15. John wrote “I went to Harrison College for free and received no such formal education while I was there.”

Too bad you were not in that Chemistry class when a master refused to teach for 1 period.( Because a very duncy white boy (spent 3 years in 3-3)show up in colla an tie driving a bran new volkswagon an tell de fellas he mekkin $600 a month,)

The master was mekkin less than that. Master quit couple years after that and went to work for a private company.

Lessons in racism in Barbados were informal and still are.

  16. So to answer Yardbroom’s question there no fundamental difference in philosophy between the two parties. It is all perceptual.

    @Bush Tea

Agree with you that Gline Clarke exposed himself to be tactless by dropping the comment. However the reaction to the comment is what bears careful observation. Gline Clarke was smitten by the political system we have which says we must be adversarial about everything. Clarke in his zeal to be adversarial mashed the crease.

  17. BT
1 โ€“ How is it โ€˜racistโ€™ for a man to refer to a club of rich white boys as โ€˜rich white boysโ€ฆโ€™? Do you mean racist or TACTLESS?
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Speaker of the House defined it as racist, not tactless.

Tactless is only now being introduced.

… and yes, I would add the description tactless!!

I am sure you can come up with other words as well …. without really trying to hard.

  18. @ John

The bushman is not trying to ‘come up with other words’…. Bushie is saying categorically that Clarke’s comment CANNOT in any way be classified as racist in any intelligent conversation.

What may be ‘racist’ is the pretentious ‘outrage’ that always seem to squash any such discussion in Barbados by seeking to make blacks afraid to even use the word ‘white’…. thus not willing to question the clearly racist system in existence which ensures that a disproportionate portion of the countries’ resources are held by a small minority ONLY because of their race.

Do you not consider that this meets the definition of racist?

You know that Bushie ain’t afraid to talk about DAT!

Have you ever attended an AGM of the Barbados Rally Club or sat in on its board of directors meeting?

You of course could have your basic facts wrong.

It is like saying BS&T is owned by rich white Barbadian plantocrats when in fact, truth be told, it isn’t!!

It is not even owned by Barbadians ….. sorry … I have not checked that.

  20. @John

    Are you serious?

Like the BTC, Motor Sports in Barbados is controlled by the Whites.

Should not be confused by the huge number of Blacks who follow the sport.

  21. @ John
OK – you may be right, ’cause Bushie is not on the board – Let’s not say rich – how about “poor white boys who can afford to buy expensive cars as toys and spend fortunes on parts and gas for sport”?

BS&T may not be owned by ‘rich white Barbadian plantocrats’ – but you should research who sold it to the foreigners rather than pass it on to the bright black bajans like Hants and GP who were in school with you.
…also check if their children also just sold their BL&P shares for the same reason…?

Regarding BS&T I have quoted excerpts from Ronnie Hughes History of BS&T. I have researched the origins of BS&T … and Goddard Enterprises Ltd., ….. and Plantations Ltd.

That’s why I constantly harp on family and business because the evidence is there.

Go look at Everson Elcock & Co., celebrating 50 years this year, and tell me if you don’t find the same principle at work. Still la private company.

I was lucky to have attended the 40th celebration do and saw the same things I read about the other companies which have been around for a long time.

… don’t forget BNB also changed ownership.

BS&T is a publicly traded company and Hants and GP are free to own a slice … perhaps they do already.

Just like Goddard Enterprises Ltd. … private company formed 1939, went public c.1978, shares issued, subscription first to employees now all kinds and conditions own.

Read the books and don’t take positions based on what you have been programmed to believe!!

  23. ….. BT, I haven’t attended any AGM or been to a board meeting either.

    Just used my common sense.

I have family that spend all nights stripping down and putting up a car and then break down on the way to the rally!!!!

    It doesn’t deter them.

They just repeat the process and learn from their mistakes.

Don’t know if they are members of what club, don’t care … they love what they do.

So long as there is a rally in Barbados they drive!!

They are descendants of the same slaves as I am …… and English, and Scots and Irish, and Portuguese and Amerindian and God only knows what else.

It doesn’t seem to matter to them.

  25. I don’t like to waste a lot of time on the “race” topic because Bajans already know the facts.

The reason for the continuing imbalance in the financial landscape is that the majority of black Bajans have worked to create a path of higher education for their children rather than take risks in an environment where the “start up capital” is difficult to access.

Whites in Barbados have either inbred or expanded to include white foreigners thus maintaining their financial stronghold.

Blacks and whites have coexisted in a peaceful way (generally) but this will not last indefinitely.

  26. John,
you can convince yourself of anything that you wish to, but people who can afford to play with cars are ‘rich’ – just like those who choose to play with horses…. don’t fight it.

You recitation about in-breeding within local companies may satisfy your conscience, but everyone else knows that in order for any company nowadays to be successful it needs to tap on the special skills than tend to reside in a select few in any population. That is enough of a challenge for a small country -far less a 5% sub-set.

When selections for vital positions are restricted by race or family or for any reason to a select minor section of a small country like Barbados it is obvious that the company will be mediocre at best and have to be sold to outsiders.

If Hants and GP had the same access to old plantation money (or even to current bank loans) then your case would be stronger.

    …bottom line!
Gline Clarke has a number of limitations, BUT his statement was NOT racist. At worst it was tactless.

Wonderful! Gline Clarkeโ€™s racist speech is the topic of the day at TripAdvisor travel website in the Barbados Forum.

Travellers and potential travellers to Barbados are saying things like this (each comment from a different traveller):

โ€œDisgusting! But not unusual for Barbados.โ€ (Tourist staying in Barbados)

โ€œIf it wasnโ€™t a politician you would say it was a naive comment but unfortunately it was calculated.โ€ (From a Barbados Destination Expert living in Henley, Ontario)

โ€œOMG that is terrible!โ€ (Destination Expert based in Barbados)

โ€œUnfortunate comments that impact on businessโ€ (Traveller from Burlington, Canada)

โ€œIt is hard ti believe comments like that are made in this day and age!!!โ€ (Traveller from Canada)

โ€œRacism against people with White skin is very common in Barbados. It seems to linger just beneath the surface of many of the islands citizens thus Politicians when needing more votes try to stir the pot. Petty crime has increased in Barbados and the government does almost nothing, why?โ€ (Tourist from West Palm Beach, Florida)

โ€œWell I agree with a lot of your sentiment and wonder where this government think most of their tourism dollars come from??? white people of course, in search of the sun, sand, sea and everything else! โ€“ I agree itโ€™s abhorrent for a government minister to be so blatantly racist. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    I’ll tell you a story.

A friend of one of my family who love to rally was sneered at as a boy at school as being a rich white boy who had bought a car.

Even the teacher at the time, who I knew quite independently, told me this boy had a car before he had a licence to drive.

    The teacher laughed.

I chuckled too, because I knew another side of the story through my family connection.

The boy who owned the car asked a question to the other boy who was sneering at him.

The question was “How much did your shoes cost?”

    The answer came back $300.00.

So the boy calmly said, that is more than I paid for my car and left the sneering boy standing in the dust …. in his $300.00 shoes!!

It is a simple fact that most of the people who go in for rallying do much of their own mechanic work themselves or have friends or family who will help.

The challenge is to get the car first to go and then to go fast and enjoy the sport of facing and solving problems under pressure.

I know of an instance where a gearbox has failed at night in the middle of a rally.

The competitors and their friends sourced a replacement from another friend, replaced the faulty one and started with the rest of cars the following morning as though nothing happened.

    No money passed.

The transaction was done on friendship and after the rally the gearbox was returned.

All involved treated the problem as their own and together found a solution to it.

Hearing the stories related makes it seem as though solving the problem was more fun than competing in the event.

Sure there are some rich individuals (mostly old men with grey hair … my kind of age) who still have the thrill and excitement of the sport in their veins and spend their money lavishly on the sport they love and wish to excel in.

By and large many of the competitors are not rich in money but very well endowed with the the skills needed to keep a car running and competing thereby supplying themselves with the enjoyment of so doing … and day by day rally by rally they get better and better at it an enjoy it more and more.

The boy with the expensive shoes got his enjoyment from wearing the expensive shoes but resented the fun the other boy was having from making an old car go, especially when he reaped success.

You only have to watch the crowd to realise that no other sport in Barbados attracts as wide a cross section of the population and in the numbers that motor sport does.

It provides enjoyment, camaraderie, thrills, spills … you name it.

Resentment based on lack of knowledge of how the thing actually works only hurts those who harbour that resentment.

Bitterness is the only return of the resentment.

Lighten up BT …. go and pick down your car and put it back up.

While you’re at it, have a look at the makeup of the BRC’s committee of management from 1957 to date… http://barbadosrallyclub.com/history/statistics

… if you believe that $300 car/shoe story you would believe anything.

  32. …. and BT, each skill in the skill set you will find in successful businesses, regardless of colour class or creed, is exercised to the fullest in the heat of competition in a rally.

Teamwork, self belief, dealing with problems under pressure, finding a way to keep going despite the roadblocks, playing by a set of rules, etc. etc. etc. are tested and honed.

There winners and there are losers.

My observation is that the people who take part love what they do, learn from each other and have loads of fun and excitement.

The tens of thousands of Bajans who flock to the events are testimony to what I am saying.

  34. To refocus the debate. The information which MME has posted clearly show the dominance of the White minority group of motor sports in Barbados. It makes the statement by Gline Clarke factual but tactless. To those who are argue otherwise your address maybe Cuckoo Land.

As I said above, the skills in the skill set to be found in any successful business are exercised at any rally.

You can test this against the names you have listed.

Please note however, that the membership of the various motorsports associations is not limited to these eleven gentlemen.

BTW, 50% or more of the population is female.

I don’t see a single female in your list!!!

Shouldn’t there be 5 if your argument on proportionality has any validity?

  36. @John

We are discussing race not gender.

“I donโ€™t see a single female in your list!!!”

No need to get emotional John, one “!” would have sufficed… LOL

Are you trying to help me make my point?

I agree… the BRC is also gender biased.

  39. It should be clear what the DLP surrogates are attempting to do by whipping up the rhetoric around the Gline Clarke gaffe. The BLP has always been perceived as the party more supported by the Whites and merchant class. The DLP propagandists are intending to milk this incident which shows the lengths politicians will go, even at the risk of stirring the race pot.

  40. David

I have said before and I will say again … both parties are a waste of time.

What we saw in parliament demonstrates it.

…. and there will be more and more examples as technology exposes the faux pas of our MP’s who are just not up to it.

I hasten to add that besides not supporting B or D (in fact busing them equally) I am neither a supporter of the PEP, PDC or any other political party, known or unknown in Barbados.

It is individual Bajans who will pull this country out of the mire politicians have dragged it into.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

I merely responded to the proportionality point that was raised.

  42. @ John
BT was going to dun wid this argument, but since MME come in the bushman have to be on his P’s and Q’s cause he have this way of putting lashes on the bushman even when he on the same side of the debate LOL

First of all the business of picking down the bushman’s car and putting it back up is not on…it is not THAT kind of car….LOL

Second your shoe story is a LAME one. the bushman’s son had a car when he was at school too – it cost him $20.00. All that says is that he from a rich family who can afford to sponsor him.
Take care you don’t let out the ‘family secrets’ – like how there are two prices for everything sold in Barbados – depending on who is buying….

Bushie suggests that you agree that, based on your own definition of racism, Gline Clarke’s statement was NOT a racist one….and let us move on.

Now if you had argued that the gentleman was a letdown – then Bushie would be your seconder, but if you doubt BT, ask Bizzy and he would tell you that Clarkie is a ‘good’ boy. It was those two who facilitated the 3S project. GC’s exploits and deals are well documented….. but the man is NOT a racist.

Now Bushie is beginning to wonder about YOU though John.
Your illogical justification of an obviously racially unbalanced economic / social situation in Barbados (indisputable by any set of facts) would lead Bushie to conclude that you support such an unbalanced status quo and see no need for any change.
In his own way, Clarke was supporting a change in this situation. (thus Bushie’s comment that this may have been his best ever contribution in the House LOl)

…how would you classify your stance on this issue?

“As I said above, the skills in the skill set to be found in any successful business are exercised at any rally. You can test this against the names you have listed.”

… John, are those skills and skill sets only reserved for sports like rallying in Barbados, or do they also apply to football, cricket, basketball etc.?

  44. Micro Mock Engineer

I notice also that in the list you have provided there is a fair sprinkling of the grey haired old men I spoke of … kind of getting up to my age.

I notice too they are at the top!!

    That is no accident!!!

It is to do with experience and resources.

The list does demonstrate the pecking order of age, the young emerging competitors at the bottom but threatening to knock the old timers off their perch.

Eventually, as in life, this too shall come to pass as the inevitable march of time takes it toll … the young will not be denied!!!

  45. BT

I support the Free Enterprise system.

If you have the talent, skills, resources to play in this system and play by its rules then you will succeed and I am glad for you.

    I harbour no resentment.

Rather I will be looking to learn from your success.

However, if you were to be saying the rules in Barbados were not being played by I would say to you I agree 100%.

I don’t think however this has much to do with colour.

I think the Speaker broke the rules like Gline Clarke did …. he recognised the racist position of the member but did nothing …. in fact he said it was ok and nothing could be done.

He is on record and his example is there to be followed by those who know no better.

The fiasco in Parliament did not occur because of colour or of party affiliation .. it occurred because the rules were not being followed …. the sooner we correct this breach the better.

  46. One thing about raleigh car racing (and horse racing) is that it is FREE to the general public. Now that is one major secret to its popularity. The other issue is that because it can generate such large followings, the activity is also as a result capable of attracting huge sums in advertising revenue. Now the interesting thing is that the people who are at the top of the scale and the ones who are able to raise the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of dollars needed to put a good car on the road are those who are very closely connected to the same people with the need to advertise … Hmmm, see the connection … Johnny?

  47. To Bush tea:
I left this John to you cause i see that he only interested in reality when it suits his class and colour. Yet, they come into black people company pretending to like the poor little blacks. But the truth is a painful thing.

  48. To explore what BAFBFP just commented, check the sponsors on the Barbados Rally Club website.

  49. lemuel | August 28, 2011 at 8:25 AM | To John:
Gline clarkeโ€™s comments were not racist. I concur with the position of David and Bush Tea. The statement was unfortunate.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is a fact that the Speaker of the house recognised the position of Gline Clarke to be a racist one.

It is a fact that he so stated.

Why on earth would you want to rewrite history which eventually will be recored in Hansard??!!!!

Why would you want to rope BT and David into this charade of misrepresenting the truth that is available on the record?

  50. David

If I have shown you and BABFP, who for a moment the other day I thought might have had to change his/her name to BABFP…&BU, that the skill set used in rally competition is the same you will find in business why would this come as any surprise?

If you look at Formula 1 racing don’t businesses like Ferrari, Audi, Maclaren, etc. etc. dominate?

The idea to promote motor sports is probably the most logical thing the GOB has ever done.

All we have to guard against is that it isn’t botched as are so many other well intentioned ideas.
