    Wait like I missed the boat. Any more to come I gine get in line. I wonder what was the criteria for this stimulus. So what happen to the rumshops and the fish vendors? I am curious to know how people like Royal Westmoreland, Bajan Services, local travel agencies, car rentals etc qualified. It seems that the rich and famous also got their bit as well. This is so bizarre !

    David boy all I can say is that I am a complete idiot that I did not get in line to get some of this free money. No wonder I still catching the ZR van (and paying the government money instead of having the government send money to me).

    I see at least one company in this list that I will never do business with again. Did business with them once on my employers behalf and they were completely unethical. I would never spend a cent of my own money with them.

    Long, long ago Pierre Trudeau called companies which feed at the public trough “corporate welfare bums”

    Interesting that a submarine company got such large assistance compared to the large hotels, which emplopye so many.

    Does the submarine company employe that many?

    Also, why is a Cayman registered company getting assistance?

    What it does show is that the economy has been in deep doo-doo for a while, the government trying to save jobs.

    Three questions if I may.

    1) Is the Sandcastle Ltd referred to, the long time abandoned 46 unit condominium project near Long Beach?
    2) Are ALL the accommodation providers that received TIRF monies REGISTERED with the BTA as required by law?
    3) Are all the tourism entities who received TIRF monies fully up-to-date with the payment of all statutory obligations?

    Sometimes lack of understanding causes us to make statements that are way off base. for some background go to http://www.egfl.bb/docs/APPLICATION_PROCEDURES_AND_GUIDELINES_PHASEII-ANCILLARY_SECTOR.pdf for criteria and process for access to the TIRF Funds. From my direct knowledge, the TIRF was the lifeline that resulted in many businesses being able to remain active with no layoffs during one of the most difficult times the Tourism Industry has experienced.

    This is the point and why the Silver Sands closure has come under the microscope. We need to have questions answered on-behalf of the taxpayers of Barbados

    I agree once tax payers money is used there needs to be accountability.

    We have to realise however, that the situation has only slightly improved over last year. Some businesses who are deep in bed with (some) tour operators have suffered a raping of their rates…..”because things are so bad” or because of threats to withdraw business by the supposed Operators “partners”..

    I think Adrian has been quoted previously that once your start to drop your rate it is very difficult to recover.
    I do not know the particulars of Silver Sands, but I also understand that the crime in the general area of the hotel is extremely high… could this have been one of the factors…

    Many people have a love hate relationship with Tourism, but they need to stop and reflect on the extent that Tourism impacts our every day life.. all aspects of life in Barbados are positively impacted by Tourism, and yet many still try to pull it down… i just don’t understand.

    Ours is a border line argument but putting it on the table. SSH received its last TIRF monies in November 2009. Wasn’t crime on the radar then.

    It may very well have been, but survival of a business and employment of people would also have been a factor on the radar, In fact I would venture to say this would have been main focus… wouldn’t you think?

    We are quick to think ill of actions… but if you are a struggling business and you are given a lifeline…. which by the TIRF you are entitled to, would you not take it… The obvious hope would be that the situation would improve with the fund injection and all would be well… but alas life is not always that way…

    I was going with that same direction of taught . though i wonder if the wards even know of the allegations. this year year audit financial report would give some insight to how the business and answer a lot of the unanswered questions.

    I agree with pretty much everything you say, but as a destination we have allowed ourselves to become far too tour operator dependent and are paying the price.
    ‘We’, both the private and public sector have not fully embraced the many opportunities out there, especially in marketing.
    I still learn something EVERY day about tourism and over last few weeks I have been trying to assess ‘our’ use (or rather lack of it) of social media. Frankly I am appalled, given the annual national marketing budget we have to spend.
    Tourism is a dynamic industry and we have to learn to respond in a timely manner.

    Could this money have a major BOOMERANG component ie much of it goes to politicians???? Skeete & Best is an accounting firm, do they specialise in tourism accounts? (I doubt it) Sometimes it PAYS to have friends in power. I travel alot to Bim from Toronto do I qualify for subsidy, since I pay for a small locally owned apartment in cash and spend loads on restaurants,bars and family gifts (CASH) at Xmas?

    We are in agreement where dependance on Tour Operators and Social media are concerned.
    At one time Tour Operators were our partners now many (most)of them are preditors, with unreasonable demands.. and look at the number of them that sell your product and after 90 or 120 days want to dispute rates or simply not pay…. Why can’t our tourism operatives see this…..

    The BTA and other tourism partners certainly under use social media….. the BTA has as you state quite a marketing budget… but their agency cannot even produce a decent website… the question I ask is what tourism experience does the the Advertising company have…. look at the photos on the site… not many with people in them,,,,, empty beaches…… empty Oistins…… empty Moontown…. does not show vibrance of activity… the site is also gloomy and dark…. needs total revamp

    I find it amazing that despite calls for transparency and more information, when information is released we then hear more calls about how it isn’t transparent.

    We are in a recession.

    Tourism has been hit hard.

    Government establishes a relief fund for the industry.

    when the list is published we get wild arsed speculation about if money goes to politicians or if there were real criteria for getting funds. From people who if they had exercised something other than their mouths would have been very able to see what the criteria were and what one had to do to qualify.

    “To qualify as an ancillary service sub-sector business, the entity must be registered as a direct ancillary service member of the BHTA. In addition, all applicants must be registered with the NIS and be in good standing or provide evidence that satisfactory arrangements have been made with respect to any outstanding amounts owed to the NIS.

    A NIS Clearance Certificate must be provided as evidence of the company’s status.

    All applications for Phase I must be submitted by May 15, 2009.”

    If you want to talk about Silver Sands closing it’s obvious that the funding was not enough to keep them afloat so dire was their situation. But to treat the programme as a form of corruption off the cuff I think does a disservice to the operators who are trying desperately to keep their staff employed and their doors open.

    Adrian…. if you have specific information about something say it, don’t try to smear by innuendo. If I wanted to use the same tactics I could say…. “Is the reason you aren’t on this list because things are going so well for you or because you couldn’t meet the NIS clearance requirement?” (I never said that you didn’t but I bet you feel that I’ve smeared you) In approaching this matter how you did you have painted honest hardworking people with a brush of corruption. It’s a disservice to them and speaks volumes about YOU.

    actually I bta think website is quite nice http://www.visitbarbados.org . could it be improved a bit yes as Oh my suggested but i don’t think its dark and gloomy it quite bright. there lack of use of facebook /twitter etc leaves alot to seem. even the ncf uses facebook more.

    A lifeline to employers to save jobs? Did Sandy Lane, Westmoreland, Almond, The Crane, Goddards et al really need a lifeline to forestal foreclosure? $160,000 to Skeetes and Best – to provide certificates for clients to dip into the fund?. This TAKE IT & RUN FUND saga is scandalous.Is there anyone, even remotely, connected to the tourism in Barbados, except the small vendors who do not have an accountant to provide a certificate and Adrian at Peach & Quiet who seems to be getting by just fine without a handout, who has not dipped into the TAKE IT & RUN FUND? Suggest that BAFBFP family be put in charge of approving disbursements.

    The BTA site loads far too slowly. And yes I am using top of the line equipment. The average potential tourist is impatient and they won’t wait for the BTA site to load. They will move to another site.

    BTA NEEDS TO FIX THIS NOW.

    I know half a dozen new media practitioners,but the tourist industry isn’t hiring them so other people are at near Cabinet level salaries. The tourist industry needs to THINK about this, and then to ACT quickly. The best brains get snapped up and the very best brains are HIGHLY MOBILE.

    First my comments were never meant to cast aspersions through any ‘innuendo’.

    But you mention that list was published! WHERE?
    NIS isn’t the only statuatory obligation
    and you also state must be a member of BHTA.
    I do not question the intention of the fund just the transparency (or rather lack of it).
    My comments are my thoughts and identified as such. I am not lurking under anonymity.

    In my opinion the cayman island site isn’t as good as bta own. While the some of the pic are friendly and more inviting the whole site need an update to more modern theme. The section that shine on it is wedding section which is similar to style of the bta own. as for the rest it could use some updating.

    for those debating the criteria please go to one of my prior post which has a link so you can see the criteria to access the funds.

    Canajan… you seem all over the place with this one… the impact of the TIRF was to save jobs and it did even if you are blinkered and unable to see this… the criteria was based on reduced revenue and if Sandy Lane et all had decreased revenue they had every right to apply. I work for a business that received funds and as a result none of us were put on short time or laid off and that was thanks to TIRF…

    We have this tendency to beat up on big business but we need to remember they employ a lot of people. As Oh My has written there was a criteria and who whoever met it was eligible.

    Interesting.

    Anyone want to help me categorize the companies by sector? i.e. Hotel, car rental, etc.

    Just to re state what has been said, let us not assume that this money is somehow tainted, there was criteria required and the money saved jobs at a tough time for this market. you just have to look worldwide at the level of discounting that has gone on to realize how valuable this money was and what the knock on did for our economy.

    Here is a sorted list by total received. I take it either this stopped in 2010 or the numbers are not available?

    If it was to save jobs then how could a company like Atlantis Submarine receive the same or more than Silver Sands????

    Atlantis got over $770,000. Do they employ as much people as Silver Sands or even other businesses that received less? If it was jobs it should be tied to number of persons employed/TIRF disbursement.

    thompson. Initial it was 15 million but was over subscribed it was then increase by a further 10 million. though i don’t know if all could are listed or they just rounded up number to 25 million.

    some of these business people seem to be playing the same trick on the P.M that their counterparts played on Obama, that is, take the stimulus and fatten their oun pockets. They are using the time when the ruling government is at its lowest ebb because of the illness of the P.M.

    1. Where exactly did this money come from?

    It is not completely clear from this blog where the money was coming from.

    It is implicit, but not explicit, that it was the GoB.

    2. Was the promised money actually paid?

    It is easy to promise money. It is less easy to actually pay it.

    Simple questions.

    Care to answer?

    The money was tax dollars and as far as we can see was paid to the named companies.
