There has never been better slaves, never worst masters – Tacitus

The Pope

For the past [212] years, the deadly socio-political and religious wound inflicted on the Papacy by Napoleon Bonaparte’s General Jean Baptiste Berthier on the 20 February 1798 has now healed to the point where this institution will once again usurp her authority as she did during the 1260 years of the Dark Ages (538 AD -1798).

The entire world still pays obeisance to this earthly religious government. Its power is greater than that of kings. Its might has been wielded for over 3000 years, shape-shifting throughout past ages taking on diverse Satanic forms while masking and masquerading as a “godlike” entity. Time and again it has resurrected itself. In the past, (just like today), it is “the ‘Beast’ that sits on many waters” –

Aptly called “The Fourth Reich” it seeks to bring world powers under its allegiance – culminating in enforced religious “laws” where all the inhabitants of earth will be obliged to adhere to – regardless of geography, religion, ethnic group, class or creed.

Social historians and anthropologists agree that most definitional interpretations of “Reich” is “German State” – but the conceptual place from which this notion originates does not infer a relation to what is today the country of Germany, but rather an ancient allusion to the Germanic Lands occupied by the Goths, Ostrogoths, Franks, Heruli, Bavarians, Alamans, Saxons and other barbarian people. The “Reich” is then best described as a crossbreed between a State and a confederation based on religious grounds – except for the latter, (not being unlike the EU of today).

In “The First Reich” was seen as the evolution of The Holy Roman Empire after the fall of the once mighty political empire called Rome. Within Europe, these geographical and political enclaves was to become a continuity of the once mighty Roman Empire that started in the lands ruled by Charlemagne (Charles the Great) who was crowned Emperor by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Day 800 AD, a date which is normally seen as the founding of the Empire, but sometimes the year of 962 AD is also used, which was when Otto I (Otto the Great) was crowned.

“The Second Reich” is also based on counting the Holy Roman Empire as the first German Empire (just as Nazi ideology insisted that Nazi Germany was “The Third Reich”). “The Second Reich”, ruled by the Hohenzollern dynasty, in the areas known as Prussia and Brandenburg, from 1871 to 1919, fell with the ending of World War I. During this “Reich” the “Iron Chancellor” Otto Von Bismarck united Germany, and set the roots for World War I. “The Second Reich” saw the unification of Germany following the Franco-Prussian War (1870 – 1871) and the crowning of Wilhelm I as German Emperor at the Palace of Versailles, with Otto von Bismarck as the first Reichskanzler, to the abdication of Wilhelm II in 1919 following the German defeat in the First World War. Then entered a period known as the Weimar Republic, from 1919 to 1933 (called sometimes the pre-3rd Reich). Social historians agree that this weakened Republic was the catalyst for the creation of what was to become “The Third Reich”.

The Third Reich” (from 1933 to 1945), called Nazi Germany came under the control of Adolf Hitler. The term “Third Reich” was most likely taken from the book “Das Dritte Reich” published by Arthur Möller van den Bruck (1876-1925) in 1923. He called it the “Third Reich” because he thought that under his leadership Germany could reunite the old Holy Roman Empire, bringing Germany back to its glorious days. This “Reich” was terminated with the fall of Germany at the end of World War II.

There is a very interesting question here because most theorists cannot agree why Hitler started World War II and what his objective was?

Of course his delusion… “The Third Reich” was an anglification of the German expression “Das Dritte Reich“, and is used as a synonym for Nazi Germany. The term was introduced by Nazi propaganda, which counted the Holy Roman Empire as the “First Reich”, the 1871 German Empire the “Second”, and its own regime as the “Third”. This was done in order to suggest a return to alleged former German glory after the perceived failure of the 1919 Weimar Republic, but this was not seen as the “Third Reich”, but rather as an Interim “Reich”.

The Third Reich” was sometimes also referred to as the “Thousand Year Reich” as in the case of the Holy Roman Empire (ref: The Dark Ages). The Nazi Party under Adolf Hitler used the terms “Third Reich” and “Thousand Year Reich” to connect the allegedly glorious past to its supposedly glorious future.

By 1932, influential bankers, industrialists, landowners and politicians conspired to put Hitler into power because of the political and economic weakness of the Weimar Republic. Hitler’s ideological views were suspect but there was an inherent belief that he could restore the Republic back to its former glory and prosperity sanctioned by the will and might of the Catholic Church.

Today, global trends suggest that what is emerging in Catholic Europe is nothing more than “The Fourth Reich” – an assimilation of “dark forces” at work to bring mankind into the long conspired One-World government under the magnetism of a powerful political/religious leader.

Let us be under no illusion, these powers that are at work – existing for just one purpose and that is – global domination.

EU integration has been one such move in the major global paradigmatic synergy in the fulfillment of this process. The forces of globalization are a major catalyst in this process in bringing about world union while removing the barriers to trade liberalization, currency formulations, political unification and finally religious ecumenism.

The work of The World Bank, The International Monetary Fund, The United Nations, The World Council of Churches and other global conglomerates are all working feverishly to ratify global change in favour of the working of these subliminal, shadowy forces which are now at work in our world.

The Vatican is preparing Pope Benedict XVI for his first formal visit to the United Kingdom as a “head of state”. There are many who question the logic of why a religious leader, by definition, who do not have any significance or relevance to the majority of British people who are secularists and are frankly void of religious affiliation. But this visit is political in nature, so those arguments are quashed because his sole intention is to first meet with Queen Elizabeth II (to heal an ancient wound), then Archbishop Dr. Rowan Williams (to bring back this lost daughter back into the fold) and finally the new PM – David Cameron (who has no problem spending £12 million of British taxpayers money on a Papal visit while public servants lose jobs from austerity measures – to simply hear that Britain must make a firm EU commitment and adopt the maxims of the Church).

For Pope Benedict, the issue to be raised in September is the sacredness of “SUNDAY” as a legislated day of worship ratified by the State as an ACT* of Parliament under the pretext of the – “WRITTEN DECLARATION pursuant to Rule 116 of the Rules of Procedure by Anna Záborská, Martin Kastler, Jean Louis Cottigny, Patrizia Toia and Konrad Szymański on ‘the protection of a work-free Sunday’ as an essential pillar of the European Social Model and a part of the European cultural heritage…”

As stated – The European Parliament having regard to Article 137 of the TEU and to Rule 116 of its Rules of Procedure dictates: –

  1. Whereas a work-free Sunday is an essential pillar of the European Social Model and a part of the European cultural heritage;
  2. Whereas a EUROFOUND survey shows that the likelihood of sickness and absenteeism in establishments that work on Saturdays and Sundays is 1.3 times greater compared with establishments that do not require staff to work at the weekend;
  3. Whereas, according to EU law, Sunday is the weekly rest day for children and adolescents;
  4. Whereas the European institutions, bodies and agencies have not worked on Sundays
since their creation and do not intend to do so in the future, despite the diversity of
    religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of EU officials and decision-makers;
  5. Calls on the Member States and the EU institutions to protect Sunday, as a weekly rest
day, in forthcoming national and EU working-time legislation in order to enhance the
    protection of workers’ health and the reconciliation of work and family life;
  6. Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the
signatories, to the Council, the Commission and the parliamentary committees for social
    affairs of the national parliaments.

If the European Union succeeds in legislating a specific day – (Sunday) as a “day of rest” – it will be tantamount to the enforcement of a lifestyle change on all peoples within its Diaspora including all Member States as well as the religious “Right” in America (who is also pushing this agenda in Congress) where we will be forced to follow a “state-sanctioned religion” – Catholicism and its enforcement of Sunday worship will be the “Mark” of a powerful Vatican-allied European superpower institution given the wings of globalization to be adopted by every nation, kindred, tongue and people.

The Catholic Church claims that “Sunday” is the “mark of its authority”, and that the other churches of Christendom acknowledge the church’s authority by Sunday observance (Cardinal Gibbons and the Douay Catechism, p. 59).

The Secretariat of COMECE* – the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community – made up of (Bishops delegated by the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union and has a permanent Secretariat in Brussels), the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) and the Church of Englandwelcome the initiative of several Members of the European Parliament, to ask the House to decide on a Written Declaration “on the protection of a work-free Sunday as an essential pillar of the European Social Model and as part of the European cultural heritage”.

Such a declaration would constitute an important commitment to a “Social Europe” knowing that it is important to find the majority necessary for this cross-party resolution, which has been launched by five parliamentarians – from the political groups of EPP, PSE, ALDE and UEN on 2 February 2009.

For most of us who are religious liberty watchers; freedom of conscience advocates; and the amalgamation of church & state denouncers and deniers – we see the writing on the wall and the moves being made by the Vatican to break down the last vestige of religious dissension in Europe by toppling Britain and very soon – America.

The Queen – who is the Head of the Church of England – along with Dr. Williams et al will be given a final papal edict to heal the century’s old division between the two faiths. This [478] year old rift is being healed right before our very eyes as we await the outcome of this historic papal visit.

This historical rift began in 1532. King Henry V III wanted Pope Clement V II to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. When Clement refused, Henry retaliated by declaring himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England and with this authority persuaded other church leaders to back his call for the annulment of his marriage so he could marry Anne.

Anne became pregnant with Princess Elizabeth who was born in December 1532. Henry married Anne (though not divorced from Catherine until May 23rd 1533). Anne was the 2nd of Henry’s 6 wives who he later accused of adultery and had her beheaded on May 19th 1536 (although some social historians agree that Jane Seymour – his 3rd wife was the actual cause of Anne’s death).

Pope Paul III excommunicated King Henry for his rebellious and adulterous ways though he remained a faithful Catholic during his reign – the Church of England still mirrored the theology and practices of the Catholic Church with the only noticeable difference that the Pope lived in Rome and the head of the Church of England lived in London.

When Henry died, his son Edward VI came to power and he tried to win the approval of the Protestants by implementing some reforms which included the creation of a Common Prayer Book in 1552. Henry quickly died and was succeeded by Mary I (also known as bloody Mary) as he had no heir. She reversed the reforms of her brother and brought the Church of England back to pure Catholicism. Many were burned at the stake as a result of refusal to embrace the edits of the new Queen.

Mary like her brother died without an heir and so her half-sister Elizabeth came to the throne and is credited with the establishment of the Anglican Church (1558) as we know it today. Her negotiation skills resulted in the church being 80% Catholic and 20% Protestant.

However, a grassroots movement within the church arose (called “rabble” – uneducated) – conservative radicals who wanted a complete break from the Catholic Church. This group given the derogatory name “Puritans” wanted (a) complete separation from the Vatican; (b) the abandonment of Catholic ritual; and (c) complete devotion to perfection and piety. To the ordinary layperson, the Puritan Movement seemed obsessed with anti-Catholic sentiment and a relentless quest for purity and perfection.

King James I succeeded Elizabeth in 1603 and he did not like the Puritans at all. To his credit however, James believed that the common people should be able to read the Bible in English and as the Supreme Head of the Church of England permitted the Bible to be translated. The first version appeared in 1611.

James died and was succeeded by his son Charles I and he too detested the Puritans and wanted the church to return to its Catholic roots and rituals. So he married a Catholic woman – creating outrage amongst the Puritans, escalating tensions and they in turn, repudiated the doctrine of “The Divine Right of Kings” (a political/religious doctrine of absolutism) – resulting in deadly persecution and the exodus of the Puritans to escape death.

Hence the birth of the colonies of New England on the shores of what was to become America and subsequently the United States of America (a land richly occupied by native peoples which a potent cultural heritage).

So the Puritans arrived on the shores of America with a strong resentment against Catholics, a rigid devotion to purity and perfection and an eagerness for freedom to worship God according to the dictates of their conscience.

The Puritans established Sunday Laws in their colonies (what we know in America today as (“BLUE LAWS” because of the blue paper they were written on). Obedience to the law was paramount. The laws did vary from colony to colony but the result was the same. Church attendance on the “Lord’s Day” was mandatory. Puritans could not work in the fields, make a bed, cook, sew or even kiss their own child on Sunday. All business activity (e.g. discussing business, buying or selling) and various forms of casual pleasures were rigorously outlawed.

The law enacted by Lord De La Warr, the 1st governor of Virginia, in 1610 stated:

“Every man and women shall repair in the morning to the divine service and sermons preached upon the Sabbath day, and in the afternoon to the divine service, and catechizing upon pain for the first fault to lose their provision and the allowance for the whole week following and also be whipped; for the second, to lose the said allowance and also be whipped; and for the third to suffer death.” (C. Gary Hullquist 2004, Emphasis supplied).

The Puritans had escaped to religious freedom – to be the first to enact and enforce similar laws limiting that said freedom for which they sought, hungered and died for.

Will we be facing a similar law of unintended consequences? Will the wall of separation between church and state be finally bulldozed to expose centuries of unheeded warnings? Will Sunday worship become a test of faith; an issue of political and civil disobedience and furthermore, a choice between the commandments of God or the dictates of men?

What we have learnt from history is that those who refuse to learn the lessons of the past are doomed to make the same mistakes in the future.

May God help us!

  1. Terrance man ya rivalling PDC.

But Terrance there has NEVER been separation between church and state in Barbados. This ain’t the U.S. of A. where such is written into the constitution.

  2. @TB
Yes 12 million bucks is a lot to spend in these times but the profile of the visitor demands it no? It is a reminder how another G20 country recently spend 1 billion for a similar reason. Things that make same people go crazy.

Dont you think there was separation of church and state in 69 when the Anglican Church was disestablished, and the Vestry system discontinued?

Since then has there not ben a defection from the Anglican church that started around that time?

Here we have a long piece of diatribe which when summarised reveals the concept (even if not stated) that after the rapture when the true church is removed from the world (c.f 2 Thessalonians 2) that the world will believe the lie and reform the RC organisation or the whore or false church that is destroyed in Revelation 17.

For years now in many parts of the world, many of the church groups that came out of the RC church after 1500 have been returning to the fold. Think world council of churches. Think eccumenical movement. This is nothing new.

Struggling with the conspiracy you are ascribing to the Pope’s visit to England.

    David
    There is no conspiracy.

The RC organisation is expected by eschatologists to assume the power it had before the Reformation.
In fact in the Tribulation it will be the false church led by the false prophet in the references in Revelation.

Even now the RC church has great power and influence still in many countries of the World.
Even now (for years) it has been regainig numbers from the denominations that emerged from it.

Even now it is positioning itself for its role in the One World order, for which the world has been prepared by GLOBALISATION and international organizations like the UN etc

  7. @ DAVID

Conspiracy theory or NOT* my friend…

When things get bad enough in our world – human beings fall into either of 2 camps:

    (1) They “GET” religion

    (2) or we see what has happened throughout recent history

Historical examples for which we are all too well aware – Germany’s role between WWI & WWII…

With economic stagflation in some quarters and hyperinflation in others – coupled with rampant high unemployment, lead to dear ‘ole Adolf’s rise to power and his decimation of multi-millions of innocent people from every corner of the world…

In recent American history, we saw how the US rounded up and detained the Japanese Americans right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the subsequent atrocities experienced by Japan in Hiroshima & Nakashaki…

If history is a gauge – things only has to get bad enough before certain entities step in to fill the moral vacuum and void left by a lack of leadership…

  8. In the “Encyclical Caritas in Veritate” (Charity in Truth – is this an oxymoron or what) – Pope Benedict argues the time has come for a world political authority to correct the evils of our time – everything from the excess of capitalism to the challenges in the environment.

Benedict calls for a world political authority:

“A political, juridical and economic order which can increase and give direction to international cooperation for the development of all peoples in solidarity. To manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result; to bring about integral and timely disarmament, food security and peace; to guarantee the protection of the environment and to regulate migration: for all this, there is urgent need of a true world political authority, as my predecessor Blessed John XXIII indicated some years ago.”

Though this call is “urgent” there are a number of questions left unanswered:

What would such authority look like?

Would it be like a United Nations?

Would it be a more centralized agency?

How would such an authority be constituted?

What about the current nation states and their own system of governance?

Who would determine what are the moral and just actions of such a body?

How would such an authority deal with the religious pluralism in the world?

Would it seek to force a “common ground”?

What happens to those who do not agree?

These are just a few of the questions that come to mind. (cf. G. Bussey)

  9. We ignore the FACTS* at our own peril… Here’s a brother’s interpretation of these said “FACTS”:

  10. @David,

The Government of Canada spent $1Billion on security for the G20. All the money was spent IN CANADA..
Canada’s economy added 93,000 jobs in June.

I would like TB and GP to tells us how China and India will be affected by this re-emerging catholic super”powers”. How will it affect Muslims?

  11. @Terence

You know we have to ask the hard questions 🙂

Were you motivated to write this submission because of the quote below which crashed with your religious belief doctrine?

For Pope Benedict, the issue to be raised in September is the sacredness of “SUNDAY” as a legislated day of worship ratified by the State as an ACT* of Parliament under the pretext of the – “WRITTEN DECLARATION pursuant to Rule 116 of the Rules of Procedure by Anna Záborská, Martin Kastler, Jean Louis Cottigny, Patrizia Toia and Konrad Szymański on ‘the protection of a work-free Sunday’ as an essential pillar of the European Social Model and a part of the European cultural heritage…”

  12. I hope u have really awakened Terence, seeing the amount of info that reveals what these people are up to.Therefore u will understand why the great America has to fall and why this coming depression will make the last one look like a picnic if people don’t wake up.

  13. Watch all six parts people..and please..wake up..if not for u at least for your kids.

  14. I knew it would just be a matter of time, before TB, the ardent Seventh-day Adventist, whose ‘sabbatarian’ proclivity, bent, and SDA’s so-called prophetess, Ellen. G. White, whose erroneous, deeply plagiarised voluminous writings, unscripturally insist, that:

“Too late they see that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is the seal of the living God.” (Great Controversy, p. 640, written in 1888).

TB, is no doubt, in his typical intellectual style, using a whole lot of diatribe, by quoting the Pope, et al in attempting to scare people away from Sunday worship, so that he can finally influence those who do not know the Biblical NT premise for worship on Lord’s Day, Sunday, and be deceived by the SDA and other sabbatarians, and follow the false doctrine of people like Ellen. G. White, who wrote:

“The sign or seal, of God is revealed in the observance of the Seventh-day Sabbath…the MARK of the beast is the opposite – the observance of the first day of the week (Sunday).” (Testimonies, Vol. 8, p, 117, written in 1904).

What IS the ‘Seal of God’ for His NT Church?

Let us hear from Almighty God and His Word, not Ellen.G. White, or any other man made false doctrine.

    The Bible.

“You were MARKED in Him with a ‘SEAL’ the promised (Sabbath day, NO! The) HOLY SPIRIT” (Eph. 1:13) emphasis added.

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you WERE SEALED (Not the Sabbath-day) for the day of redemption.” ( Eph. 4:30) emphasis added.

“Ye were SEALED’ (esphragisthete), First aorist passive indicative of ‘sphragizo’ old verb, to set SEAL on one as a mark or stamp, marked and authenticated as God’s heritage is in 4:30. See 11 Cor. 1:22 for the very use of the metaphor here applied to the Holy Spirit even with the word ‘arrabon’ (earnest). Spirit (pneumati). In the instrumental case. (Word Pictures in the New Testament, Vol. IV, The Epistles of Paul, p, 519). emphasis added.

This most erroneous, heretical teaching of Ellen White, and other sabbatarians, stand as the very ‘core’ of Seventh-day Adventism, and are FALSELY using this entire unbiblical notion and concept, of Sunday worship, as the ultimate mark of the beast, utter nonsense.

I don’t know what to say exactly about how China and India and the Muslims will be affected by this re-emerging catholic super”powers”.

Eschatologists believe that China & Japan are the Kings of the East as recorded in Ezekiel’s prophesies and that they will eventually come against Israel.

Some eschatologists believe that many of the Muslim nations between two particular latitudes are the Kings of the South as recorded in Ezekiel’s prophesies and that they will eventually come against Israel

Seems that things will be very interesting indeed

Eschatologists believe that the great America has to fall since there does not seem to be any indication that they are mentioned in any of the prophetic Scriptures about the end times. Most Americans believers know this, but they are too proud to contemplate it. Also it seems that they think that they will some how bounce back from the current economic situation that they are in.

Could you please kindly exegete Collosians 2:16-17 in its context and in its relationship to faith and practice?

    16. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17. Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

  17. GP wrote “Also it seems that they (Americans) think that they will some how bounce back from the current economic situation that they are in.”

Of course they will GP, by any means necessary.

  18. CHRIST, THE ANSWER TO RITUAL
LET NO MAN THEREFORE JUDGE YOU IN MEAT, OR IN DRINK, OR IN RESPECT OF AN HOLYDAY, OR OF THE NEW MOON, OR OF THE SABBATH DAYS:
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ [Col. 2:16–17].

During the days of World War II, two wonderful young people got married. The young fellow was sent overseas, and while he was gone, his young bride carried the biggest purse ever seen In that purse she carried a huge photograph of him. Most people carry a little bitty picture with them, but not this girl; she carried a photograph that you could have hung on the wall. She was everlastingly drawing it out and showing it to people. She’d say, “Isn’t he handsome?” Then the day came when the war was over, and he was coming home. She went to meet him. Now what do you think she did when she saw him coming down the gangplank? She hadn’t seen him in a couple of years. Do you think she took out that picture and looked at it? Do you think she looked at the picture and said, “Isn’t he wonderful?” I don’t think she even had that picture with her! She saw him and when she saw him, she didn’t need a picture—she threw her arms around him.
A believer is not to observe ordinances that are only ritual and liturgical; they have no present value. God did give certain rituals for the people in the Old Testament. So what has changed? Paul explains that they were merely “a shadow of things to come.” We get our word photograph from the Greek word used here for “shadow.” All the rituals of the Law in the Old Testament were like a negative or a picture—they were just pictures of Christ. Now that Christ has come, we have the reality. Why should we go back and look at a picture? Let’s stop carrying around a faded photograph when we have the reality—“Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Let’s stop carrying around a faded photograph when we have the reality—“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

    does this help GP?

  19. Dear Terrance Blackett: Are you a 7th Day Adventist?

Dear Goergie Porgie: Are you a 7th day Adventist?

  20. @DAVID

“Were you motivated to write this submission because of the quote below which crashed with your religious belief doctrine?”

There are obvious conflict with my “PURITAN” virtues…

    But here’s a heads up in an up-sided-down world…

    The VATICAN says unequivocally –

”Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles…”

“From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.” – The Catholic Press, Sydney, Australia, August 1900

”It is well to remind the Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists and all other Christians, that the Bible does not support them anywhere in their observance of Sunday. Sunday is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church, and those who observe the day observe a commandment of the Catholic Church.” – Priest Braby, in an address, reported in the Elizabeth, N.J. ”News”, March 18, 1903

    Question:-

“Have you any other way of proving that the (Catholic) Church has power to institute festivals of precept (to command holy days)?”

    Answer:-

“Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her: she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday, the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday, the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority.” – Stephan Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism, page 176

”Reason and commonsense demand the acceptance of one or the other of these alternatives: either Protestantism and the keeping holy of Saturday, or Catholicism and the keeping holy of Sunday. Compromise is impossible.” – The Catholic Mirror, December 23, 1893

    Conclusion:-

“The Catholic Church openly admit that it is they that by law has changed the day of worship from Sabbath to Sunday in 336 BC. They also admit that if we shall follow the Bible, we have to keep the Sabbath holy, not Sunday.”

    Listen to what PROTESTANTISM says:

    THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND (Anglicans):-

”And where are we told in the Scriptures that we are to keep the first day at all? We are commanded to keep the seventh; but we are nowhere commanded to keep the first day.” – Isaac Williams, Plain Sermons on the Catechism, page 334, 336

This is what the BAPTIST says:-

”There was and is a command to keep holy the Sabbath day, but that Sabbath day was not Sunday. It will however be readily said, and with some show of triumph, that the Sabbath was transferred from the seventh to the first day of the week, with all its duties, privileges and sanctions. Earnestly desiring information on this subject, which I have studied for many years, I ask, where can the record of such a transaction be found? Not in the New Testament-absolutely not. There is no scriptural evidence of the change of the Sabbath institution from the seventh to the first day of the week.” – Dr. E.T. Hiscox, (author of the Baptist Manual).

    The METHODIST says:-

”It is true that there is no positive command for infant baptism. Nor is there any for keeping holy the first day of the week. Many believe that Christ changed the Sabbath. But, from His own words, we see that He came for no such purpose. Those who believe that Jesus changed the Sabbath base it only on a supposition.” – Amos Binney, Theological Compendium, page 180-181

Here is what AMERICAN CONGREGATIONALIST say:-

”The current notion that Christ and His Apostles authoritatively substituted the first day for the seventh, is absolutely without any authority in the New Testament.” – Dr. Layman Abbot, in the Christian Union, June 26, 1890
As this subject takes on greater amplification in the very near future – it will become clear how the forces at work are using sophistry to bamboozle if it were possible the very ELECT*…

”Fearful is the issue to which the world is to be brought. The powers of earth, uniting to war against the commandments of God, will decree that “all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond” (Revelation 13:16), shall conform to the customs of the church by the observance of the false sabbath. All who refuse compliance will be visited with civil penalties, and it will finally be declared that they are deserving of death. On the other hand, the law of God enjoining the Creator’s rest day demands obedience and threatens wrath against all who transgress its precepts.”

“With the issue thus clearly brought before him, whoever shall trample upon God’s law to obey a human enactment receives the mark of the beast; he accepts the sign of allegiance to the power which he chooses to obey instead of God. The warning from heaven is: “If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation.” Revelation 14:9, 10.”

“But not one is made to suffer the wrath of God until the truth has been brought home to his mind and conscience, and has been rejected. There are many who have never had an opportunity to hear the special truths for this time. The obligation of the fourth commandment has never been set before them in its true light. He who reads every heart and tries every motive will leave none who desire a knowledge of the truth, to be deceived as to the issues of the controversy. The decree is not to be urged upon the people blindly. Everyone is to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently.”

“The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of truth especially controverted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him not. While the observance of the false sabbath in compliance with the law of the state, contrary to the fourth commandment, will be an avowal of allegiance to a power that is in opposition to God, the keeping of the true Sabbath, in obedience to God’s law, is an evidence of loyalty to the Creator. While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers, receive the mark of the beast, the other choosing the token of allegiance to divine authority, receive the seal of God.” (cf. Great Controversy).

  21. The trouble is Terrence is that 7th day Adventists seem to be sour unhappy people. If you would lighten up a bit you would get more convents. If you know God and are still unhappy it makes the rest of us wonder about your God.

  22. Terrance Blackett wrote “The VATICAN says unequivocally – ”Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles…”

You do understand don’t you that those of us who are not Catholic don’t give a a*s what the pope or the Vatican says. We don’t care what the Adventists say either.

You the Pope, the Vatican, and the Advenbtists need to get over yourselves.

I am not sure whether you have ever read the book by noted, controversial British author AVRO MANHATTAN but his work entitled “The Vatican in World Politics” is serious scholarship for anyone who dares refutes the machinations of the Vatican…

    Baptist Manual? LOL

The Baptist dont follow any manual.
The Baptists follow the Baptists Distinctives, foremost of which is that THE BIBLE IS THE ONLY AUTHORITY FOR FAITH AND PRACTICE.

The Baptist structly follow SCRIPTURO SOLO. Ie they dont put the authority of the church or of any books or manuals with the Bible. The manual of the Baptists is the BIBLE.

  26. @Terence

One of your submissions made it to Craiglist, not sure if the reason you would want.

  27. GP, before giving the exegesis of Col 2:16-17, which is devastating to the SDA contention of Sabbath observance for the NT Church, I just want to again, stress, and this is for the benifit of those who do not understand what Terrence is attempting to do with his diatribe submission, by quoting from some EU document, and the Pope’s upcoming visit to England, re some legalistic imposition of Sunday, all of which suits the Seventh-day Adventist obsession with Sunday, ultimately being the Mark of the Beast, AND to vehemently continue to try and force the ‘legalistic’ observance of the Sabbath, which they believe erroneously, as I have already shown from God’s Word, is the SEAL of God on believers.

Secondly, it makes NO difference whatsoever, to true, sanctified believers, NOT Sabbatarians, what the Pope and the EU, the Anglican Church, et al do in seeking to bring about whatever they like, Blue, Red, or Yellow law, as TRUE believers are ALREADY *SEALED* with, by, and through, the HOLY SPIRIT, not Sabbath-day observance, period!

    Not Legalism, but Christ.

    Colossians 2: 16,17.

“So let NO ONE judge you in food or drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or SABBATHS. which are a SHADOW of things to come, but the SUBSTANCE is of Christ.” emphasis added.

As I have already done on previous threads dealing with this same subject matter, I’ll quote once again, from the late Dr. Walter Martin, scholar par excellence, as he wrote when dealing with the Adventist.

“First, we who were dead have been made ALIVE in Christ, and have been forgiven all trespasses and sins. we are FREE from the condemnation of the law in ALL of its aspects, because Christ took our condemnation on the cross. As already observed, there are NOT two laws, moral and ceremonial, but ONE LAW containing many commandments, ALL PERFECTLY *FULFILLED* by the life and death of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

“Therefore,” the Apostle Paul boldly declares, “Let no one pass judgment on you in question of food and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a sabbath. These are only a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.”

Martin then goes on to correctly show that:

“In the face of this clear teaching, sabbatarians revert to their dual-law theory and argue that Paul is referring only to observance of the Jewish ceremonial law, not to the sabbath which, they insist, is a moral precept because it is one of the Ten Commandments. We have seen, however, that the Ten Commandments are but a fragment of the moral law encompassed by the commandment, “Thou shalt love they neighbor as thyself ” (Leviticus 19:18, Romans 13:9).”

“With regard to this passage, Adventists maintain that since the word in Colossians 2:16 (sabbaton) is in the plural, it means the ceremonial Sabbaths, not the weekly Sabbath, which they contend is still in effect. However, their argument seems to be that Colossians 2: 16, 17 refers to sabbaths and feast days, which were shadows of things to come, and thus part of ceremonial laws, but that the seventh-day Sabbath is not a shadow of redemption but a memorial of creation and part of the moral law. The leading modern translations, following the best New Testament scholars, render Colossians 2:16 as “a sabbath” or “a sabbath day” NOT “sabbath days’ as in the King James Version. Their reason for doing this is well stated by E.W. Vine who wrote:’

“Sabbaton or sabbata, the later the plural form, was transliterated from the Aramic word which was mistaken for a plural: hence the singular sabbaton was formed from it…In the epistles the only direct mentions are in Colossians 2:16 “a sabbath day ” (RV), which rightly has the singular…where it is listed among things that were “a SHADOW of things to come” i.e., of the age introduced at Pentecost and in Hebrews 4: 4-11 where the perpetrual ‘sabbatismos’, is appointed for believers…For the first three centuries of the Christian era the FIRST DAY (Sunday) was NEVER confounded with the Sabbath; the confusion of the Jewish and Christian institutions was due to declension from apostolic teachings.”

“Supplementing Dr. Vine’s statement is the comment of M.R.. Vincent who declared:

“Sabbath days (sabbaton), the weekly festivals revised correctly as ‘day’ the plural being used for the singular. See Luke 4:31 and Acts 20:7. The plural is only used ONCE in the New Teatament of more than a single day (Acts 17:2). In the Old Testament, the same enumeration of sacred seasons occurs in I Chronicles 23:31; II Chron 2:4; II Chron 31:3; Ezekiel 45: 17; Hosea 2:11.”

“As Dr. Vincent points out, the revisers’ rendering of ‘sabbaton’ in the singular accords with the use of the word throughout the New Testament. It is significant that in 59 of 60 occurrences in the New testament, Adventists AFFIRM that they REFER to the weekly Sabbath; BUT in the 60th occurrence they maintain it does NOT, although ALL grammatical authorities contradict them.”

Martin then goes on to quote from another truly great Biblical exegete, Dean Henry Alford, who wrote concerning Colossians 2:

“Let no one therefore judge you (pronounce judgment of RIGHT or WRONG over you, sit in judgement on you)…in respect of feast or new moons, or sabbaths (i.e., yearly, monthly, or WEEKLY celebrations). (The relative may refer EITHER to the aggregate of the observance mentioned, OR to the last mentioned, i.e., the Sabbath, OR it may refer to all.”

“After making significant comments of the grammar, Dean Alford went even further in his insistence THAT in verse 17, grammatically speaking, the Apostle Paul contrast ALL the Jewish laws with their fulfillment in Christ, the former being a SHADOW, pointing forward to the real SUBSTANCE (soma) which was CHRIST.”

Alford summed up his comments thus:

“The blessings of the Christian covenant: these are the SUBSTANCE, and the Jewish ordiances the mere TYPE of resemblance, as the SHADOW is of the living man…We may observe, that if the ordinance of the Sabbath had been, IN ANY FORM of lastng obligation on the Christian Church, it would have been quite impossble for the Apostle to have spoken thus. The FACT of an oblugatory rest of one day, whether the seventh of the first, would have been directly in the TEETH of his assertion here, the holding of such would have been still to retain the SHADOWS, while we possess the SUBSTANCE. And no answer can be given to this by the transparent special-pleading, that he is speaking only of that which was Jewish in such observances: the whole argument being general, and the axiom of verse 17 universally applicable.”

    Martin then soundly points out:

“We see, then, that from a grammatical standpoint if the Adventists insist that Colossians 2:16 refers ONLY to ceremonial sabbaths, they run against the use of the word for weekly sabbaths in the New Testament; and, as Alford points out, if “sabbaths” be allowed, it must INCLUDE all Sabbaths, weekly, monthly or yearly. On the other hand, if Adventists admit the correction of the revisers and render Colossians 2:16 “a sabbath day” its use in the New Testament still refers almost exclusively (see Acts 17:2) to the weekly Sabbath, which Adventists maintain is permanent, although Paul DELIBERATELY classes it with the ordinances which Christ by His death NAILED to the cross! (Colossians 2:14).” (The Kingdom of The Cults, pp. 465. 466, 467) emphasis added throughout.

This is just scratching the surface of much more sound Biblical hermeneutics, exegesis and proper contextual analysis, re the Sabbath, and Adventists, which coherently refutes this erroneous doctrine of sabbatarianism.

    Thanks Zoe

    People all!

Note the following Scriptures which clearly teach that the early church met on the FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK.
    Act 20:7
And upon the first [day] of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
    1Cr 16:2
Upon the first [day] of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as [God] hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

The church was started a full three hundred years before the corrupt organization called the RC church began when Constantine merged the state and church in contrast to the clear teaching of Acts 4.

Dont let this false teacher fool you with this RC red herring.

Note also that the SDA are jokers who have come relatively lately, attempting to tell folk WHAT TO EAT WHAT NOT TO EAT AND WHICH DAY TO KEEP HOLY IN CLEAR CONTRAST TO THE SIMPLE TEACHING OF COLLOSSIANS 2:16-17
This Scripture can not be possibly clearer.

Annonymous posted a great illustration to explain these verses and Zoe has referred to three of the most renowned Greek scholars in his exegesis of these verses to clearly indicate that THE NT DOES NOT TEACH THAT THE SABBAH MUST BE KEPT IN THIOS DISPENSATION.

Mark these two verses in your Bible to deal with this SDA nonsense.

Just imagine friends there were no theologians in the world before the SDA’s came. NOR HAVE THERE BEEN ANY SINCE.
NOR HAVE THERE BEEN ANY WHO MIS INTERPRET THE SRIPTURES SO BLATANTLY AND LIE LIKE THIS MAN DOES IN HIS POSTS.

He would have us believe that everyone before the SDA’s or since has WRONGLY DIVIDED THE WORD OF TRUTH.

For those who are interested, here are the Baptist distinctives. This is what Baptists believe and follow. THERE IS NO BAPTIST MANUAL!

    B Biblical Authority
The Bible is the final authority in all matters of belief and practice because the Bible is inspired by God and bears the absolute authority of God Himself. Whatever the Bible affirms, Baptists accept as true. No human opinion or decree of any church group can override the Bible. Even creeds and confessions of faith, which attempt to articulate the theology of Scripture, do not carry Scripture’s inherent authority.

“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” ~ 1st Thessalonians 2:13

A Autonomy of the Local Church
The local church is an independent body accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ, the head of the church. All human authority for governing the local church resides within the local church itself. Thus the church is autonomous, or self-governing. No religious hierarchy outside the local church may dictate a church’s beliefs or practices. Autonomy does not mean isolation. A Baptist church may fellowship with other churches around mutual interests and in an associational tie, but a Baptist church cannot be a “member” of any other body.

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” ~ Colossians 1:18

    P Priesthood of the Believers
Every born-again believer has direct access to the throne of God. Therefore, since every child of God shares in the priesthood of the believers, all have the same right as ordained ministers to communicate with God, interpret Scripture, and minister in Christ’s name. This is first and foremost a matter of responsibility and servanthood, not privilege and license.

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” ~ 1 Peter 2:5

T Two Ordinances of the Church
We practice only believer’s baptism by immersion, which is the only acceptable mode for baptism because it alone preserves the picture of saving truth. No other form pictures the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ (Romans 6:1-5). We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a symbolic ordinance, picturing Christ’s body broken for our sins and His blood shed for our redemption. It is not a saving ordinance, but helps us remember His death, and inspires us while looking forward to His coming. It is to be observed by regenerate, obedient believers.

“For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.” ~ 1 Corinthians 11:23-24

    I Individual Soul Liberty
Every individual Christian has the liberty to believe, right or wrong, as his/her own conscience dictates. While we seek to persuade men to choose the right, a person must not be forced to into compliance, realizing that it is not always the larger group who holds the truth when, in fact, our heritage as Baptists has demonstrated the worth of every individual believer

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. ~ Romans 14:12

S Saved and Baptized Church Membership
Local church membership is restricted to individuals who give a believable testimony of personal faith in Christ and have publicly identified themselves with Him in believer’s baptism. When the members of a local church are believers, a oneness in Christ exists, and the members can endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”…”Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” ~ Acts 2:41&47

T Two Offices of the Church
The Bible mandates only two offices in the church–pastor and deacon. The three terms–“pastor,” “elder,” and “bishop,” or “overseer”–all refer to the same office. The two offices of pastor and deacon exist within the local church, not as a hierarchy outside or over the local church.

“This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.”…”For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.” ~ 1st Timothy 3:1-13

S Separation of Church and State
God established both the church and the civil government, and He gave each its own distinct sphere of operation. The government’s purposes are outlined in Romans 13:1-7 and the church’s purposes in Matthew 28:19 and 20. Neither should control the other, nor should there be an alliance between the two. Christians in a free society can properly influence government toward righteousness, which is not the same as a denomination or group of churches controlling the government.

“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:” ~ Romans 13:1-3

In the current dispensation of GRACE (also called the church age (and according to Collossians 2:16-17, the Sabbath as kept under the dispensation of LAW (which ended at the cross) IS NO LONGER IN VOGUE.

Paul in Collossians 2:16-17 makes this vert clear.
In the book of Galatians he makes it very clear that contemporary believers are free from the law.

  33. Terence Blackett quotes thus:

    “The VATICAN says unequivocally-

“Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claim to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles…”

    Utter nonsense!!!

‘The Catholic church openly admit that it is they that by law has changed the day of worship from Sabbath to Sunday in 336BC (you mean 336 AD). They also admit that if we should follow the Bible we have to keep the Sabbath holy, not Sunday.”

First, the Roman Catholic religious/political institution, DID NOT exist for the first THREE hundred years of the Apostolic church era, and the Post Apostolic Church, the WHORE of Revelation, the Mother of Harlots DID NOT come into existance until AD 315-325, with Constantine, it was LONG before this vile, evil, wicked institution came into existence, that the post Apostolic Church,(NOT Roman Catholicism) observed the FIRST day of the week, Sunday, not as an imposition, legalistically forced on any one, BUT, as was obviously implied from NT text.

Let us hear from the Testimony of the early church Father, who were NOT Roman Catholics, as NO such institution existed at that time, what was their DAY of worship, and why they so did.

    As Dr. Walter Martin states:

“The Church Fathers provide a MASS of evidence that the FIRST day of the week, NOt the seventh day, is the Lord’s Day. Some of this evidence is here submitted for the reader’s consideration. In company with the overwhelming majority of historians and scholars, we believe that not only the New Testament, but the following citations REFUTE Sabbatarianism. we have YET to see any systematic answer to what the Christian Chruch always believed.”

    1. Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch, in the year 110, wrote: “If then, those who walk in the ancient practices attain to newness of hope, NO longer observing the SABBATH, but fashioning their lives after the LORD’S DAY on which our life arose through Him, that we may be found disciples of Jesus Christ, our only teacher.”

    2. Justin Martyr (100-165): “And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together in one place and memoirs of the Apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits…Sunday is the day on which we ALL hold our common assembly because it IS the FIRST day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness in matter, made the world: and Jesus Christ our saviour on the same DAY rose from the dead.”

    3. The Epistle of Barbnabas (between 120 and 15)): “Your new moons and sabbaths I cannot endure’ (Isaiah 1:13). You perceive how He speaks: Your present sabbaths are not acceptable to me but that which I had made in giving rest to all things, I shall make a beginning of the eight day, that with joyfulness, a day also in which Jesus rose from the dead.”

    4. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons (about 178): “The mystery of the Lord’s resurrection may NOT be celebrated on any other day than the Lord’s Day.”

    5. Barbaisan (born 154): “Wherever we be, ALL of us are called by the one name of the Messiah, namely Christians and upon ONE day which is the FIRST day of the week, we assemble ourselves together and on the appointed day we abstain from food.”

    6. Cyprian, Bishop of Cathage (200-258): “The Lord’s Day is both the FIRST and the eighth day>”

    7. Eusebius (about 315): “The churches throughout the rest of the world OBSERVE the practice that has prevailed from the Apostolic tradition until the present time, so that it would NOT be proper to terminate our fast on any other day, BUT the resurrection DAY of our Saviour. Hence, there were synods and convocations of our bishops on this question and they unnanimously drew up an ecclesiastical decree which they communicated to churches in all places – that the mystery of the Lord’s resurrection should be celebrated on no other than the Lord’s day.”

    8. Peter, Bishop of Alexandra (about 300): “We keep the Lord’s Day as a day of joy, because of Him, who rose thereon.”

    9. Didache of the Apostles (about 70-75) : “On the Lord’s own day, gather yourselves together and break bread and give thanks.”

    10. The Epistle of Pliny (about 112, addressed to thev Emperor Trajan): ” They (the Christians) affirmed…that the whole of their crime or error was that they had been wont to meet together on a FIXED day before daylight and to repeat among themselves in turn a hymn to Christ as to a God and to bind themselves by an oath… these things duky done, it had been their custom to disperse and to meet again to take food – of an ordinary and harmless kind…”

    As Dr. Martin then asserts:

“Thus it appears that from Apostolic and pratristic times, the Christian Church observed the Lord’s Day or the FIRST day of thye week; further, the Jewish Sabbath, in the words of Clement of Alexandra (about 194) was “nothing mote than a working day.”

“In their zeal to establish the authority of the Sabbath, Adventists either reject contrary evidence as unauthentic ( and so conflict with the preponderance of scholastic opinion), OR, they IGNORE the testimony of the early church. Although they seem unaffected by the evidence, the FACT remains that the Christian Church has both Apostolic and historical support for observing the Lord’s Day in place of the Sabbath.” (The Kingdom of The Cults, pp. 460,462) emphasis added.

The fact that Roman Catholicism, legalised Sunday worship in 336 AD, does NOT in anyway invalidate the FACT that the verly early post Apostolic church, confirmed by the writings of the Church Fathers, that the FIRST day of the week, the Lord’ Day, was already recognised and observed, in place of the Jewish Sabbath.

The Sabbath IS NOT the Seal of God on His NT Church, as erroneously taught by Ellen G. White and the SDA’s, the New Testament states emphatically, that:

“You were MARKED in HIM with a SEAL, the promised (Sabbath day, NO! NO! NO! the) HOLY SPIRIT” (Eph. 1;13) emphasis added.

Again in the New Testament, the most ardent Pharisee of them all, prior to his conversion on the Damascus road, in his encounter with the Resurrected (0n the FIRST day of the week) Lord of Lords, said:

‘Owe no man anything, but to love one another, FOR he that loveth another hsath FULFILLED THE LAW” (Rom 13: 8).

    Listen again to Paul:

“Love worketh no ill: therefore love is the FULFILLING of THE LAW” ALL of the LAW id fulfilled by loving all SEVEN DAYS of the week, not in any particular DAY!

“For ALL THE LAW is FULFILLED in ONE word, even this: Thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself.” (Gal. 5:14) emphasis added.

The verb rendered FULFILLED is in the perfect tense, and the translation could read, The WHOLE LAW, stands fully OBEYED, not by the observance of the Sabbath day, or any other day, BUT, by loving your neighbour as yourself, EVERY day of the week!!!

Terence, this IS the Word of God, not the writings of a thousand other men, or E.G. White, or Roman Catholicism.

    Wake up man, wake up!!!

Terrance, thanks for raising this topic. Appreciate the discussion and the food for thought. I am a pro-Sabbath and will try to share biblical bases for this. Firstly we are saved by accepting the free gift given to us by God (Ephesians 2:8, John 3:16) and not based on any work that we can do. God works in us to achieve right motives and actions (Philippians 2:13).

The idea of a Sabbath is introduced in Genesis before any mention of the law and before there were any Jews: Genesis 2:1-3.

The Sabbath was kept by Jesus and was kept by his disciples after his death. For example: Of Jesus- Luke 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. Of Paul- Acts 17:2, NIV. “As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures.”

Jesus did not change/abolish the law- he magnified it- Matthew 5:17-19, NIV. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.” The two ‘new’ commandments (Mark 12:30,31) include all that was in the ten- first four- love for God, last six- love for fellow man. Jesus actually expanded on commandment keeping by saying that it is in the mind and not just the actions- this can be seen in Jesus’ position on adultery (Exodus 20:14) in Matthew 5:28 ‘But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart’.

Of the end of time and the destruction of Jerusalem, Jesus said in Matthew 24:20
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day. The first of these took place in AD 70 and the second is still to come. Talking about Sabbath keeping in the new earth- Isaiah 66:22-23, NIV. “As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before Me,” declares the Lord, “so will your name and descendants endure. From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before Me,” says the Lord.”

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

  40. @DAVID

I wasn’t aware that specific thread was posted there…

  41. @Sola Scripture

Agree with your above comments in reference to the sabbath. All other references shows the bible can be interpreted and man can be manipulated and taught to beieve whatever theory or ideaology fed them. Jesus expounded his reasoning about the rituals of the sabbath after he was confornted about him doing healing. He as you explained did keep the Sabbath even up to his burial.

  42. @ DAVID

“Does God care about which day is regarded as the Sabbath?”

Clearly the VATICAN DOES David!!! And this has been an on-going issue for almost 1400 years…

So why would they be making “POLITICAL” moves in the EU & the US to orchestrate SUNDAY* as a legislated day of worship throughout the world?

Are we so oblivious to past history?

    Look at the history DAVID:

THE CONVERT’S CATECHISM OF CATHOLIC DOCTRINE by Rev. Peter Geiermann C.SS.R.

Page 50, section 3 (under the heading “THE 3RD COMMANDMENT)

    Q. What is the 3rd commandment?
    A. The 3rd commandment is: Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day

    Q. Which is the Sabbath day?
    A. SATURDAY IS THE SABBATH DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Q. Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
    A. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday BECAUSE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TRANSFERRED THE SOLEMNITY FROM SATURDAY TO SUNDAY

    Q. Why did the Catholic church subsitute Sunday for Saturday?
    A. The substituted Sunday for Saturday, because Christ rose from the dead on a Sunday and the Holy Ghost descended on the Apostles on a Sunday

    Q. By what authority did the church substitute Sunday for Saturday?
    A. The church substituted Sunday for Saturday by the plenitude of that divine power which Jesus bestowed upon her

    Q. What does the 3rd commandment command?
    A. The 3rd commandment commands us to sanctify Sunday as the Lord’s Day

    Q. What does the 3rd commandment forbid?
    A. The 3rd commandment forbids (1) The omission of prayer and divine worship; (2) All unnecessary servile work; (3) Whatever hinders the keeping of the Lord’s Day holy

    Q. Is the desecration of the Lord’s Day a grievous matter?
    A. The desecration of the Lord’s Day is a grievous matter in itself; though it admits of light matter

So there you have it David….

Do your own homework – study for yourself…

The reason why so many follow mindlessly is because they accept the dictates of others without taking responsibility for their own study and enlightenment…

  43. @ DAVID

By the way, isn’t the intrigue stifling?

The Vatican nipped & tucked the COMMANDMENTS OF GOD by put the 4TH COMMANDMENT in 3rd place while cutting one and moving up the others….

Where are the BIBLE SCHOLARS on this one?

I mean this is good fodder folks – but they refuse to touch it!!!

  44. David of BU asked “Does God care about which day is regarded as the Sabbath?”

Terrence Blackett wrote “Clearly the VATICAN DOES David!!! And this has been an on-going issue for almost 1400 years…”

You haven’t answered David’s question Terrence.

Are you afraid to answer it? Or is it that you do not have the answer.

  45. And Terrence and others. Surely you know that even if the Vastican has a conspiracy to have governments legislate Sunday as a day of worship, surely you understand that that is NOT going to happen. Widespread public education has ensured that once people can think for themselves many of them will, and so the decline in organized religion. You will note the the countries with the best public education systems have the lowest rate of weekly partricipation in organized religious services.

So yes churches, all churches, including the Roman Catholic have lost a lot of their power.

  46. “The Sabbath and Creation” by S. Bacchiochi

This Bible study is excerpted from chapter 2 of my book THE SABBATH UNDER CROSSFIRE. For the sake of brevity, I have left out not only the footnotes, but also the historical debate about the creation Sabbath.

If you are looking for a book on the Sabbath to give to a friend, I would heartily recommend this book, rather than the other three Sabbath books that I have authored. The reason is that this book responds in a compelling way to all the major arguments used to negate the continuity and validity of the Sabbath.

During the past five years, this book has helped over 200 ministers to accept the Sabbath. In some instances, whole congregations belonging to the Salvation Army, Southern Baptists, Methodist, Pentecostal, and Mennonite churches, have moved their services from Sunday to Saturday.

The study of the Sabbath and Creation is important because most Christians today, including former Adventist pastors and professors who recently left the Adventist church, attack the Sabbath by denying its creation-origin and reducing it to a Mosaic institution given exclusively to the Jews. Christ allegedly fulfilled the Sabbath by replacing the literal observance of the day with the offer of His rest of salvation.

By rejecting the creation origin of the Sabbath these Christians attach a negative, “Jewish” stigma to seventh-day Sabbath-keeping, identifying it with the Jewish dispensation allegedly based on salvation through legal obedience.

Sunday-keeping, on the other hand, is associated with the Christian dispensation based on salvation by grace through faith. Thus, Sabbath-keeping is perceived as a trademark of Judaism, while Sunday-keeping as the distinguishing characteristic of Christianity.

This view is passionately defended by Dale Ratzlaff, a former Seventh-day Adventist Bible teacher and pastor who has written an influential book Sabbath in Crisis (345 pages).

Recently, Ratzlaff has retitled his book as Sabbath in Christ, obviously because the title Sabbath in Crisis suggests that God Himself is in crisis, since He established the Sabbath in the first place.

The truth is that Ratzlaff, not God, is in crisis.

Most likely he has experienced the Sabbath as a burden, rather than as a blessing. Consequently, he is trying to find ways to negate the validity and value of the Sabbath.

Ratzlaff argues that the Sabbath is not a creational/moral institution for humans, but a ceremonial/Old Covenant ordinance given to the Jews.

Allegedly, Christians no longer need to observe the Sabbath because Christ fulfilled its typological function by becoming our Sabbath rest.

It is unfortunate that Ratzlaff’s unbiblical teachings have influenced thousands of Adventists to leave the church.

The creation origin of the Sabbath has come under constant attack because what Christians believe about its origin determines what they believe about its validity and value for today.

Those who believe that the Sabbath was established by God at creation for the benefit of human beings, accept its observance as a creation ordinance binding upon all, Jews and Christians.

By contrast, those who hold that the Sabbath originated at the time of Moses, or after the settlement in Canaan because of socioeconomic or astrological-astronomic considerations, regard the Sabbath as a Jewish institution not applicable to Christians. These implications make it to briefly examine how the question of the origin of the Sabbath.

    Objectives

This Bible study has three basic objectives. The first is to survey what the OT and NT teach regarding the origin of the Sabbath.

The second objective is to examine the specific arguments recently advanced against the creation origin by former Sabbatarians.

In most cases, their arguments are old, having already been used in the past by those who have attempted to negate the continuity and validity of the Sabbath. Yet these arguments deserve a close examination because they are used today to mislead many sincere people.

The third objective is to reflect on the human implications of the creation origin of the Sabbath. Specifically, we consider the significance of God’s act of resting, blessing, and sanctifying the seventh day for the human family. We shall note that creation week is in a special sense a human week because all that God did on that week was designed to have a lasting result for the human family.

Our ultimate objective is not to expose the fallacies of the various arguments raised against the creation origin and universal function of the Sabbath, but to encourage a fresh appreciation for the Biblical account of the Sabbath origin and meaning for today.

    THE CREATION-SABBATH IN SCRIPTURE

The Creation-Sabbath in the Old Testament-

The biblical view of the origin of the Sabbath is unequivocal: the Sabbath, as the seventh day, originated at the completion of the creation week as a result of three divine acts: God “rested,” “blessed,” and “hallowed” the seventh day (Gen 2:2-3).

Twice Genesis 2:2-3 states that God “rested” on the seventh day from all His work. The Hebrew verb sabat, translated “rested,” denotes cessation, not relaxation. The latter idea is expressed by the Hebrew verb nuah, used in Exodus 20:11, where the divine rest fulfills an anthropological function as a model for human rest.

However, in Genesis 2:2-3 the divine rest has a cosmological function. It serves to explain that God, as Karl Barth puts it, “was content to be the Creator of this particular creation . . . He had no occasion to proceed to further creations. He needed no further creations.” To acknowledge this fact, God stopped.

Genesis 2:3 affirms that the Creator “blessed” (barak) the seventh day just as He had blessed animals and Adam and Eve on the previous day (Gen 1:22, 28).

Divine blessings in Scripture are not merely “good wishes”—they are assurance of fruitfulness, prosperity, and a happy and abundant life (Ps.133:3).

In terms of the seventh day, it means that God promised to make the Sabbath a beneficial and vitalizing power through which human life is enriched and renewed.

In Exodus 20:11, the blessing of the creation seventh day is explicitly linked with the weekly Sabbath.

Genesis 2:3 also affirms that the Creator “hallowed” (RV, RSV) the seventh day, “made it holy” (NEB, NAB), or “sanctified it” (NASB).

Both here and in the Sabbath commandment (Ex 20:11), the Hebrew text uses the verb qiddes (piel), from the root qds, holy.

In Hebrew, the basic meaning of “holy” or “holiness” is “separation” for holy use.

In terms of the Sabbath, its holiness consists in God’s separation of this day from the six working days. The holiness of the Sabbath stems not from man’s keeping it, but from God’s choice of the seventh day to be a channel through which human beings can experience more freely and fully the awareness of His sanctifying presence in their lives.

    The Importance of the Creation-Sabbath

The great importance of the creation-Sabbath in the Old Testament is indicated by the fact that it provides the theological motivation for the commandment to observe the seventh day (Ex 20:11) and the theological justification for serving as a covenant sign between God and Israel (Ex 31:17).

The theological reason given for the command to observe the seventh day Sabbath “to the Lord your God” (Ex 20:10) is “for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them and rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it” (Ex.20:11).

The tie between the creation-Sabbath and the Sabbath commandment is so close that the former provides the basis for the latter. To keep the Sabbath holy means (1) to follow the divine example given at creation, (2) to acknowledge God as Creator, and (3) to participate in God’s rest and blessings for mankind.

The creation-Sabbath serves also as “a sign” (‘ôth) of the covenant relationship between God and His people: “It is a sign for ever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed” (Ex. 31:17). The very nature of a sign is to point to something beyond itself, to mediate an understanding of a certain reality and/or to motivate a corresponding behavior.

As a covenant sign rooted in creation, the Sabbath mediates an understanding of redemptive history (i.e., covenant history) by pointing retrospectively and prospectively.

Retrospectively, the Sabbath invites the believer to look back and memorialize God as the creator of an original, perfect creation (Gen 2:2-3; Ex 20:8,11; 31:17).

Prospectively, the Sabbath encourages the believer to look forward and trust God’s promise to fulfill His “everlasting covenant” (Ex 31:16; Heb 4:9) to restore this world to its original perfection. Thus, the Sabbath stands as a sign of an “everlasting covenant” between creation (Gen 2:2-3; Ex 20:11; 31:17) and redemption (Deut 5:15; Is 56:1-4). It directs us to the past perfect creation and it points constantly to the future, ultimate restoration.

  47. The Sabbath and Creation (cont’d)

    Christ and the Creation-Sabbath

The New Testament takes for granted the creation origin of the Sabbath. A clear example is found in Mark 2:27 where Christ refutes the charge of Sabbath-breaking leveled against the disciples by referring to the original purpose of the Sabbath: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

Christ’s choice of words is significant.

The verb “made-ginomai” alludes to the original “making” of the Sabbath and the word “man-anthropos” suggests its human function. Thus to establish the human and universal value of the Sabbath, Christ reverts to its very origin right after the creation of man. Why? Because for the Lord, the law of the beginning stands supreme.

The importance of God’s original design is emphasized in another instance in reporting the corruption of the institution of marriage, which occurred under the Mosaic code.

Christ reverted to its Edenic origin, saying: “From the beginning it was not so” (Matt 19:8). Christ then traces both marriage and the Sabbath to their creation origin in order to clarify their fundamental value and function for humanity.

    The Creation-Sabbath in Hebrews

Another explicit reference to the creation-Sabbath is found in the book of Hebrews.

In the fourth chapter, the author establishes the universal and spiritual nature of the Sabbath rest by welding together two Old Testament texts, namely Genesis 2:2 and Psalm 95:11.

Through the former, he traces the origin of the Sabbath rest back to creation when “God rested on the seventh day from all his works” (Heb 4:3; cf. Gen 2:2-3).

By the latter (Ps 95:11), he explains that the scope of this divine rest includes the blessings of salvation to be found by entering personally into God’s rest (Heb 4:3,5,10).

Our immediate concern is not to understand the meaning of the rest mentioned in the passage, but rather to note that the author traces its origin back to the time of creation when “God rested on the seventh day from all His works” (Heb 4:4).

The context clearly indicates that the author is thinking of the “works” of creation since he explains that God’s “works were finished from the foundations of the world” (Heb 4:3). The probative value of this statement is heightened by the fact that the author is not arguing for the creation origin of the Sabbath; rather, he takes it for granted in explaining God’s ultimate purpose for His people. Thus, in Hebrews 4, the creation origin of the Sabbath is not only asserted but is also presented as the basis for understanding God’s ultimate purpose for His people.
