In the middle of a recession going on six consecutive quarters of GDP decline. The value of spend in our number one foreign exchange earner tourism down. Now we have this volcano in Iceland which has forced planes in the lucrative European market to be grounded. Yet the new Governor of the Central Bank was reported yesterday in the news as confirming Barbados needs to diversify our tourist product.

God help us!

The need to diversify will force us ti be creative
    This creativity must be harnessed.
We must repose in our selves the confidence to go forward with our ideas and not be daunted by history or any fears of the present nor the future,

  2. Strange… I thought it was from a volcano that had not erupted for over 100 years and which the geologists thought was dormant/extinct.

There was no earthquake. It was a volcanic eruption!

  4. Thanks all, BU having a senior moment.

Flights across Europe remain grounded today.

  5. What a terrorists’ plot could NOT* accomplish – nature’s fury in a few seconds was able to do… Yet men find it hard to believe that there is a greater power higher than morbidly-intentioned conflations of fragile, flaky, flocculent human flesh which when faced with forces outside of its control, has to yield ashamedly…

You have to smile with an element of disdain as you watch airports around the UK which handles millions of passengers daily reduced to a “bloody” parking lots – it is a caricature of THE SIMPSONS…

Europe is also feeling the squeeze and today the word out of the US Federal Aviation Authority is that 50% of flights into the EU will be canceled until further notice…

You couldn’t make this STUFF* up – Unbelievable!!!

  6. David

Right now folks of a certain age are lining up at your door protesting at your explanation of “having a senior moment”.

It might be a good time to apologise before its too late, some “seniors” I know can be pretty feisty.

Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

  7. @Sargeant

Your advice is taken and we hasten to record an apology to seniors everywhere.

Could the unsettled tectonic plates be a contributing factor to the Iceland volcano eruption?

Recent Earthquakes in Italy,Haiti,Chile , California/ Mexico, Turkey and China., is there a connection? Here is the view on earthquakes from a seismologist.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/apr/14/no-spike-earthquakes-seismologists

  9. @ Sargeant

Funny that article. Wikipedia data shows that for the period 2001-2009, there was a 67% increase in volcanic eruptions over the previous 25 years (1976-2000), or a rate of 1.6 eruptions per year. In fact, in the previous 25 year blocks, the numbers of eruptions stack up like this:
    1900-1925 = 9
    1926-1950 = 13
    1951-1975 = 7
    1976-2000 = 24
Of course, my numbers are on the low side, because I counted multiple or continuous eruptions from one volcano as a single event…

And since the article was dealng with earthquakes, the readers would be delighted to know that, again according to Wikipedia data, the number of serious earthquakes greater that a magnitude 6.0, was 136 events, or 650% higher in the last 9 years that in the previous 25. Now I fail to see how the media hype can be blamed for such a dramatic rise in events.

Did you now that it has been shown that some of the recent earthquake and other disasters were actually man-induced (China in May 2008, Haiti & Chile this year)?

  10. Hey, here are a few questions –
    1) if a visitor cannot now arrive in Bim because of the travel restriction, will they still be charged their hotel room?

    2) if the visitor is delayed here in Bim, who pays for their additional hotel, food, and transport?

    3) if the airplane is stuck here, will the Government still charge them for every day it sits on the ground?

  11. You gotta’ see Heathrow & Gatwick – they look like ghost towns… with an almost eerie, stealthy silence which chimes an almost ominous sense of foreboding; a portent of an apocalyptic scenario reminiscent of a Steven Spielberg movie…

On this ASH THURSDAY – BRITISH AIRWAYS Cabin Crew must be relishing the thought of unplanned, provoked industrial action due to the seismic actions of forces beyond Louis Walsh’s control…

Someone at BA must be saying there is a “GOD” after all…

  12. Correction on yesterday being Ash THURSDAY…

Can you present some evidence Sir?

Re Someone at BA must be saying there is a “GOD” after all…

I doubt that very much! Not of course that believing that there is no God means that there is no God.

What I find interesting in this event is that it shows what simple means can be used to bring the world system (the cosmos diabolicos) to a grinding halt as predicted in Revelation 18.

All that is needed is to do a simple thing like this at all the other major hubs worldwide!

  14. BU what’s going on with the Luke Bjerkhamm murder case? Why is the police not allowed to interview Johan Bjerkhamm?

    What are the similarities between

The Peter Morgan public distruction of crown property and the police delayed action, willfull or otherwise in getting to interview him?

The Mark Winston Goodridge alledged beating of a boy in Highgate gardens, and the subsequent spectical of pomp and privilage when he consented to be interviewed by the police?

The Royal Barbados Police Force being refused entry to Millennium Heights, St Thomas, Barbados,a gated community, when they were investigating a complaint of domestic violence from someone within the gated community?

Any similarities you can think of? If the young people of Barbados view this current situation as more proof THAT YOUR LAW IS NOT MY LAW is alive and flourishing in Barbados are they wrong?

I expect the typical response of “Lets not fan the flame of this and that”

  15. Georgie Porgie Avatar

Another instance was the Juman murder case several years ago.

When one followed the case there seemed to be no way that Juman could be convicted according to the medico-legal evidence that was presented.

BUT one man, one doctor could and would not be bought!

Dr Brathwaite who did the post mortem on the victim was the Crown’s final witness; and he presented the evidence that ruined Juman financially and sent him to Glendairy!

All it really takes is ONE MAN WHO WOULD AND CAN NOT BE BOUGHT AT ANY PRICE!

  16. Thanks GP These are the cases I would love to read about. What ever became of Dr. Brathwaite?

  17. Georgie Porgie Avatar

The dear Dr is/was a Barbados Scholar, and a very interesting and practical man. He used to be one of the doctors for the Police and Fire Department.

Had a bad domestic situation that caused him to develop a great affinity for one of the members of the alcohol family (namely ETHYL).

As you know such affinities can be very problematic.

Since Ive been away from Bim for almost seven years, I have lost touch with colorful tales of his exploits, and whether he is still being taken up the steps by the police to certify deaths in the south etc . Or telling the Crown in a rape case, that the victim had a slight tear on her hymen!

I have a great respect for him, for his stance in the Juman case – the morbid inside story can not be told here, for obvious reasons, except to say that one could easily get a good tv out of what went on.

Also, he taught us medical students some simple practical issues when we met him at Gall Hill Clinic in the 70’s on our Community Health Rotations.

The one I rember best was hearing same “Dont worry to give the old people all them fancy pain killers. You have to give them something to rub with! So write Lin Meth sal!

I followed that advice. Do you know that a certain local company kept carrying up the price of this simple substance. Really the precursor of aspirin! Works well!

  18. Georgie Porgie Avatar

By the way Juman eventually died in self exile in Nevis after his release from prison.

The info on this matter remains tight. Based on our sources the gentleman trying to clear a bullet which was jammed in the chamber. He absentmindedly held the nozzle which explains why he blew his hand off. What it does not explain is why is 11 year old son was in the vicinity.

He remains under guard and as yet no charge sheet has been filed.

“David” has something to say. Here is David:

“In the middle of a recession going on six consecutive quarters of GDP decline. The value of spend in our number one foreign exchange earner tourism down. Now we have this volcano in Iceland which has forced planes in the lucrative European market to be grounded”.

You, dear reader, are right: it’s hard to understand. That’s because “David” couldn’t appreciate a grammatical sentence if it reared up and bit him in the balls.

David worries about possible losses in foreign exchange earnings from what he chooses to call Barbados’s “number one foreign exchange earner”.

“David also chooses to make an editorial decision to publish the following opinions, all of which are from one single individual in one single thread among the “BU family”:

“There is no genuine love between White people & Black people. Black men usually get involved with w white women for sexually gratification …

“I hope the stinking rat catcher Indians, the trashy White Europeans dirt bags & the nasty Chinese in Barbados have taken note

“NO NO No.You have mixed your strong black African genes with the inferior White European genes and produced mixed up mutants who unfortunately will have to be classified as Black people because of our strong Black African genes that are superior to the stinking, disease carrying genes of the European White trash.

“It seems that each & every Black person who has some degree of European ancestry in their bloodline is extremely proud and feel honour to have the poisonous, stinking, disease carrying blood of the European rapists of our fore-parents in their genes … I have control over where my penis will go …

“The mixing of the genes of Black African people & other ethnic groups have produced a number of misfits … We have mutants like David Thompson …

“I could be referred to as uneducated, delusional, mad, bigoted, racist, stupid, insensitive or by any other adjective or description.I say what I believe in and no one can sway me from that course …

“The Jews as it claimed was imprisoned, and killed by the Germans during the so-called holocaust …

“The Black African Race is in a state of hopelessness.because many of us are in a state of denial …

“I try not to respond to highly an highly educated, well spoken & well written academic like yourself … I write nothing but unmitigated junk …

your destructive, killing, murderous, bulling, boy lovers & Child predators, the white trash Europeans …

“I support Idi Amin 100 % another African hero of mine.I am hoping for Idi Amin type politics to be played out in Barbados.I fully supported Idi Amin and hope his actions could be replicated in the Caribbean & Barbados in particular.

“David” says: “God help us!” To paraphrase “David”: god help the Barbados tourist industry.

  21. Sorry Georgie, got in rather late (5:45 pm) and have a few things to do, but I’ll get back to you on Sunday, this same space…

  22. It is interesting to note that there was also another deep Earthquake in Spain this Sunday that just passed & it wasn’t a region usually hit by such things & there was no damage as it was underground. It is also said in some news reports that this could be a Month long eruption so hopefully it doesn’t interfere too greatly with tourists too much

  24. Tourism is such a fickle industry that we cannotr rely on it to sustain us. It is time a revolutionary attitude be taken to redirect the economic future of not only Barbados but the entire caribbean to a more sustainable industry. What it will be, I’m not sure but something has to happen or we will be in more serious danger. What if with the strange weather pattern now,and a “boiling” atlantic, we have a bad hurricane season?

  25. Dear Sir,
This is a disaster. People from Europe have to cancel their plans to travel by air. I am a 7 years old boy from Malaysia and my father’s friend cannot go home to England and he don’t know when he can go home.
So, if this go on there will be no European tourist until the ash flew away.

  28. If anyone is interested in the latest news on Earthquakes they can visit this site. The link to the South American region also indicates that there were several earthquakes in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico region during the past week.

    http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/

  29. @ David. Yes you are correct in your statement about the plate tectonics issue. Iceland is siting on one huge unstable fire ball of unstabe divergent plates assocated with the mid-atlantic ridge. The whole country is one big volcano waiting to blow up.

  30. Some hotels are offering discount rates in North america to the people stranded. I wonder if the hotels here in Barbados would do the same.

  31. Now that we have had the earthquake in Haiti, followed by one in Jamaica and now Cayman, where does this put Barbados in relation to the tectonic plate?

  32. That put Barbados Too close for comfort. I hope the government eyes are not wide shut and are prepared in the event for such an occurence. Barbados is dangerously very close to the radar. It happen before and it can happen again. Hopefully not during the cricket world cup.

  33. If you consider the theory of plate tectonics no country is immune from earthquake because the whole solid earth is made up of one giant rock structure floating on sub-layer of molten material that have fissured along the continental boundary and they form plates. The question that should concern us is how prepared are we in the event of a catastrophy? Earthquake- proof is a misnomer, but we can minimise the damaged if we follow strict guidelines as it relates to building code. As it now stands no country in the caricom can withstand a 7 on the ritcher scale without escaping some serious property damaged and loss of lives. Are we prepared?

  34. @zion1971

Aren’t countries sitting on fault lines more vulnerable to earthquakes? Where are the fault lines in the Southern Caribbean?

  35. Georgie-Porgie,

OK, I’m back. Regarding the “proof” of funny stuff with regards to the recent earthquakes, I’ll direct your attention to a few things (you may have to search yourself, ’cause I don’t keep actual website data or sites). Some of them are just things that make you go hmmm…

China – there were several strange lights seen in the sky minutes before the earthquake struck. Eye witnesses said that the sky was glowing, or the clouds were a strange colour. What caused that?

Haiti – a similar thing. Also, isn’t it strange that just the day before, the US completed a “what would we do if” exercise in Miami, simulating a natural disaster in Haiti. Isn’t it strange that a report was leaked that Haiti has significant oil deposits just offshore, in the same area as the epicenter. Isn’t it strange that in less than 24 hours, there were massive amounts of US troops on the ground with equipment – typically to move that amount of troops and equipment it takes a little longer (unless you had foreknowledge). And strange that with such a powerful earthquake, it wasn’t felt next door in Dominican Republic, neither was there any waves or tsunami reports.

Chile – 2 reporters (Reuters? I don’t remember) reported similar lights. In contrast to Haiti though, the earthquake was felt in Buenos Aires, Argentina (700+ miles away).

Do a search for HAARP earthquake – a scientist using radio wave technology in the Pacific Northwest of the US in the 70’s or 80’s looking for oil triggered an earthquake when they powered up their equipment. Also look at weather modification programs using the massive HAARP array in Alaska. This may account for the strange coloured lights, caused by over-energized atmospheric particles (like the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights caused by cosmic radiation)

    Is that enough to start?

  36. Barbados is actually a consolidated mass of sediment (termed a diapiric prism) which has been deposited in an oceanic trench. This trench demarcates the boundary (a subduction zone) between the Caribbean plate and the American plate. It is thought that such sedimentary masses are relatively deformable and so stresses are NOT built up in the rocks which on fracturing would violently release the stored energy which is experienced as an earthquake. In fact as the plates move together this sedimentary mass is squeezed causing Barbados to actually rise at a rate of 1 mm per year! However as experienced 3 years ago, seismic waves from a sufficiently strong event in the margin between the plates (approximately located below the Eastern Caribbean island arc) could still affect us.

  37. Islandflyer
You have provided some information but no scientific proof man. You need to come better than that friend.

  38. @ David. The whole island arcs of the caribbean from cayman island to the islands of the coast of venezuela formed the caribbean plate and they are sandwich between the the north american and the south american plate. These plates are constantly rubbing against each other building up pressure and stress. Now the northern caribbean region in the area of the cayman island, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico are very seismically active becasue of they are in the proximity of the trenches ( Cayman and Puerto Rico) and also a huge Fault Lines run along that area. Hispaniola sits atop two fault lines. And the Major one ( Enriquillo-plaintain garden fault runs from Montegobay, Jamaica to the Southern Part of Hiati.

The Eastern Caribbean Islands are more prone to Volcanic eruption. However, a volcanic eruption can also trigger and earthquake and vice versa. Yes while it is true that countries that lies near fault lines is more prone to earthquake disaster a neighbouring country not within the fault is still at risk if the quakes is very powerful and occur at shallow depth.

  39. Some passangers stranded in Europe are using alternative means of transportation to get to their places of destination. The passengers are paying substanial fees to do so. As much as five 5000 dollars was paid to a taxicab.

  40. @ BU

Willie Walsh and a team of pilots flew a Jumbo into the ash cloud and returned back to the hanger in Cardiff in Wales… The filters in the giant engines were taken out for examination to determine how serious the problem would be flying into the cloud…

WILLIE WALSH must be desperate… BA after losing 20 million a day and now the talk of COMPENSATION* by the airlines – the situation looks pretty chaotic…

Europe is said to have lost 200 million EUROS since the no-fly zone was implemented and the BRITISH* government is sending warships Arc Royal to pick up soldiers and passenger form EU ports…

One would think there is a war on in Europe…

    LMAO….
