israel-palestineAs the bombs rain down on the heads of women and children in Gaza…over 460 Palestinians have been killed, to be fair as well as Hamas fighters.  One is tempted to ask when will it all end, but before that question is answered we should ask ourselves when did it begin…I will not venture into Biblical history.  I am also aware of the Hamas rockets fired on the Israeli cities including Sderot and Ashkelon.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the situation –human beings are being killed – what cannot be denied is that after the Second World War the world disgusted with themselves for the treatment  the Jews suffered, sometimes with the acquiesce of some world powers and silence from others.  Sought to redress the wrongs suffered by the Jews, in so doing it was the Palestinians who had to pay… and they did with their land.  When the Israelis are asked how come you are entitled to these lands, they retort – God gave it to us, it is written in the Bible.  They are not many people today who can show title to land they hold by reference to the Bible in a court of Law…but that is bye the bye.

That Israeli is entitled to live in peace is so obvious that is is not worth stating but so are the Palestinians.

We have had so many Palestinian “bogey men”  who if they were killed or were out of the way all would be sweetness and light but they were killed or died…and there is no sweetness or light.

Do you remember Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon said he was an obstacle to peace and without his presence a settlement would ensue.  Arafat is long dead and new fighters and leaders have taken his position.  Do you remember Hamas Sheikh Ahmed Yassin the nearly blind paraplegic who was assassinated by an Israeli helicopter gunship in 2004 he was said to be an obstacle to peace he is gone and yet there is no peace.

The shrouds have been wrapped around babies and they entombed.  Mothers beat their breast and wail, the bombs rain down..there is no peace.

Conflicts have been settled and the world moves on, but I fear the Israeli Palestinian conflict will “grind” on for many a year.  There will be no peace for the price of that peace is an acceptance that the other side is entitled to live in peace and harmony; bold is he/her who will predict that they will see peace in their lifetime in the Holy Land…I fear I will not see it, however there are always surprises in war.

  1. To those who believe, no explanation is necessary; BUT, to those who HAVE CHOOSEN NOT TO BELIEVE, no explanation is possible.

Yes, ignorance can be changed by education; but vast numbers of people have CHOOSEN not to be educated, and therefore, by choice, remain in self-imposed stupidity!

  2. @Carlos… Unquestioning faith. The true sign of the weak minded…

You can give a person a brain. You cannot make them think…

God gave all humans a brain; capable of critical thought. Critical thought involves always questioning if what you believe / have been taught / are being told is true is actually the truth.

“Those that believe” tend to not question their beliefs. Countless continue to die every year because of it….

    Chris,

I really don’t understand the difficulty you have with the concept of words being inspired by God, which is what theopneustos (not “theos pneuptos” LOL – where you take your Greek lessons?) actually means.

Case in point… when you read what Bush Tea writes on a ‘good day’, you really feel he capable of that on his own? LOL

Brudda man… we all have God inspired moments (admittedly some more than others)… unfortunately there are ‘devil’ inspired moments too. Sometimes it is not so easy to distinguish between the two… but the differences generally become clear when examined through the lens of time.

I know GP and BT duz get vex when I talk bout genetics and genetic engineering… but the deeper I drill on that subject (and other like it) the more convinced I am of God’s existence.

  4. But Chris

When you say Unquestioning faith is the true sign of the weak minded you are certainly referring to everyone, aren’t you?. Certainly at some time even you were/are guilty of unquestioning faith or acceptance in something………even after thinking about it.

I think of all the things I learned throughout the various periods of my schooling

To say that “Those that believe” tend to not question their beliefs is a generalization not worthy of a thinker of your caliber Chris. You must certainly know that is not true, because you yourself must believe something. E.g you believe that your chair will hold you up.

  5. MME

The answer is in the prophecy. You have a warped mind though???

  6. GP

While I would agree that faith is important to change and achievement, we may have to go into the semantics of the word, as most prefer to use it for the opposite.

The USA created the Taliban to fight the Soviets……now trying to kill them.

Aided Saddam to fight Iran (gave him the chemicals)……turn around and popped his neck.

The CIA had Muhammad Fara Aidid on their payroll for years, pumping millions into Somalia……then they went in, unknown to the UN and without permission and killed him….only for him to be replaced by a son ..who was a US marine.

The Mossad created Hamas to destabilize Fatah and the PLO…..now, well we know…

The USA pushed for democratic elections in Gaza…the people voted…Hamas won…yet still the USA and Israel along with the EU refuses to acknowledge them as the legitimate choice of the people.

    …..and we talk of peace??

    The hypocrisy of democracy!!

All of a sudden Pires apologists like Igal Reece surfacing praising a foreigner who persists in insulting Bajans in a weekly column in a Bajan newspaper. I dont care two hoots about Pires and his idea of humour is not mine.

  16. In July of 2004, Khalid Amayreh, writing in http://www.infoimagination.org, in a study of Israeli military strategy, noted the following: “Israel’s hawkish Chief of Staff Moshe Ya’alon last week lashed out at the Knesset’s influential committee on defense and foreign affairs, accusing some members of disclosing ‘classified army secrets.’” The reason for the tongue lashing? That the Israeli occupation army “provoked the Palestinians into escalating the violence during the first few months of the second intifada in order to give the army a pretext to hit hard on the Palestinian society and bully it into unconditional surrender.” How was this done? 1,300,000 bullets were fired by “occupation soldiers on Palestinian population centres and other targets.” “This massive firepower, which had no operational justification … showed that the Israeli army was interested more in decimating and harming Palestinians and less in ending the violence.” Compare this newest incursion with its massive firepower against a people that have no where to go, but must live through the agony of a rain of death, a people that have had to endure a merciless siege for two years that has left them physically weakened, emotionally drained, psychologically distraught, and personally humiliated by unemployment, and helpless to alter the situation imposed on them. Before he was “extra-judicially executed,” Abd al-Aziz Rantisi, former Hamas Gaza leader, made this observation, “Israel is offering us two choices, either to die a meek lamb’s death at the slaughter house or as martyr-bombers.” Consider the reality not the propaganda.

Let me return now to the quote from Oedipus Rex that headlined this piece: “How dreadful knowledge of the truth can be.” The nations of the world are faced with a pulverizing public relations blitz by the Israeli government to justify its disproportionate destruction of the Palestinian people and their property. Silencing truth, the reality that exists behind a cloak of lies, destroys justice just as it destroys the people of Gaza. I look back at Hamas’ victory at the election booth, at their offer for peace following that election, both the Hamas offer to consider the Saudi Prince’s 2002 peace plan and Mahmoud Abbas’ offer for an International Peace Conference in Oslo, and realize that Israel and the United States ignored their offers, intentionally ignored their offers just as President Bush, earlier this fall, ignored, by refusing to reply, to a Hamas offer for an on-going ceasefire so that peace could be achieved. A different agenda is at work here, an agenda that seeks the total elimination of the Palestinian people as a people, subject to the authority and control of the Israeli government. As Mohammed Barakeh, an Arab member of the Israeli Knesset remarked about Israel‘s strategy in 2004, “Israel sought to and almost succeeded in convincing the world that its violent onslaught against the Palestinian society was in reaction to Palestinian terror. This simplified and erroneous claim ignores the simple fact that Israel’s violent and racist occupation of the Palestinian homeland is the root cause of all violence.” Once again, the government of Israel has determined that it can, by stealth of propaganda, control how the world views its occupation and military conquest of the Palestinian people. Let’s hope reality overcomes deception.

There Is No Fixed Method for Genocide

    By SHULAMIT ALONI

Dr. Ya’akov Lazovik writes (“Academic Genocide”, “Ha’Aretz”, 4 March) that in the State of Israel it is impossible that the regime and the nation will plan and commit a genocide. It is difficult to determine if this is naivety or self-righteousness. As we know, there is no single fixed method for murder and not even for genocide. The author Y. L. Peretz wrote about “the righteous cat” who does not spill blood, but only suffocates.

The government of Israel, using the military and its instruments of destruction, is not only spilling blood, but it is also suffocating. What other name can be given to the dropping of a one-ton bomb over a dense urban area, when the justification uttered is that we wanted to murder a dangerous terrorist and his wife? The rest of the citizens who were killed and injured, among whom are children and women, do not count, of course.

How is it possible to explain the expulsion of citizens from their homes at three o’clock in the morning on a rainy night, then depositing bombs in the house and then departing without warning? When those expelled returned to their home, the bombs were exploded and a brutal murder and destruction of property was thus committed. And what is the justification for what happened in Jenin? We did not destroy the whole neighbourhood, just 85 houses; it was not slaughter, we killed only 50-some citizens. How many does one need to murder and destroy for it to be a crime?–A crime against humanity, as determined by the Laws of the State of Israel, not only the laws of Belgium.

    http://www.counterpunch.org/aloni03072003.html

Shulamit Aloni was an Member of the Kenneset and served as a Minister of Communications and the Arts, Science and Technology.

  21. @GP: “To say that “Those that believe” tend to not question their beliefs is a generalization…

You are correct GP — I misspoke. I should have capitalized it thusly: “Those that Believe”. It was meant as shorthand, meaning “Those that believe in *anything* unquestioning. This includes all absolute atheists.

@GP: “You must certainly know that is not true, because you yourself must believe something. E.g you believe that your chair will hold you up.

You are correct. However, my believe of the ability of my chair to hold me up is not unquestioning. It is based on an understanding of the physics and engineering behind it’s ability to do so, and from empirical evidence of it’s ability to perform repeatedly in the past.

My fundamental point (as I argued at some length over on BFP some time ago (URL: http://barbadosfreepress.wordpress.com/2008/06/25/from-what-gods-are-we-born-in-whose-image/ ))…

One can never be sure about *anything*. Thus, everyone must make a “leap of faith” to accept their universe view. To some it is the sciences, and/or religion. (And keep in mind, the Sciences are also a leap of faith — simply one which keeps being tested.)

But, importantly, there are many religions. This, IMHO, is a good thing, because different religions have much different fundamental views.

My (and, I think, our) problem is when people start to be taught that those who do not share the same view are fundamentally wrong and/or lesser humans.

God gave us a brain powerful enough to become a mind; to become sentient and conscience. It is to be expected that different thinkers will come to different points of view. This should not be thought of as error, however, because everyone probably are at least a little wrong….

    My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees.. I don’t feel threatened. I don’t feel discriminated against. That’s what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, ‘Merry Christmas’ to me. I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrat ing this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a creche, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can’t find it in the Constitution and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren’t allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the Americ a we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it’s not funny, it’s intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her ‘How could God let something like this happen?’ (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, ‘I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?’

In li ght of recent events… terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine M urray O’Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr Spock’s son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he’s talking about. And we said OK.

Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with ‘WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.’

Funny how simple it is for pe ople to trash God and then wonder why the world’s going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send ‘jokes’ through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

    Are you laughing yet?

I respect Dr. Porgie as best amounts the rest of you. He openly admits to be a simple man and he bases all of his arguments on biblical text. His is a very simple arrangement and he does not boast to have otherwise. That’s cool, that’ coping.

But to you, the Jew, and Scout and Carlos I would say that there was human suffering, war, torture, rape, slaughter, executions of the most horrific type, starvation, sickness and disease for eons. There was no God around to do anything about it back then, and someone needs to burst your respective bubbles now…!

  36. @ Hopi..

See what happens when you dispel the myths?
Regardless of their stance….you have introduced doubt into their minds, hence the reactions.

‘Hopi you spend too much time on the internet reading conspiracy theories.’

This must the most ignorant post so far.Anyone following this conflict for such a long time and with your knowledge, does not need a theory, conspiracy or not to see the evil of Israel.

All I can say is ….if these are God’s chosen people then I will hate to see the rejects.

  37. BAFBFP
It can not be denied that there has been, as you correctly point out, “human suffering, war, torture, rape, slaughter, executions of the most horrific type, starvation, sickness and disease for eons.”

I disagree with you that “ there was no God around to do anything about it back then” even though it often SEEMS that he doesn’t care, or does not know, or is not effective. Whereas I can say without fear of contradiction from Chris, the philosopher, that much of the ills you describe are due to sin, I have no answer for God’s apparent intervention. As you know this is a paradox that is raised in Habakkuk, by Asaph in Psalm 73, I think it is, and elsewhere.

We believe that man’s rebellion and the ills you cite will be dealt with in the millennium, and afterwards at the great white throne judgement of Revelation 20. I guess we will have to wait until then to see if our bubbles will burst. Until then, we will receive some whippings from Chris, your self and others.

But that is OK. It our responsibility as believers to obey the tenets of 2 Timothy 2:15 which says………… Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

And 1 Peter 3:15 which says But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give] an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.

Our responsibility is to study the word, interpret it correctly and give you answers about what we believe with out rancour or anger etc……….even though you disagree with us or give us a whipping. So bear with me if I hold my ground. LOL

By the way I agree with the opinions of Ms Graham as stated in FFB’s post.

  38. Technician
You point out ………..….if these are God’s chosen people then I will hate to see the rejects.

These folk are certainly NO GOOD!

You must remember though that these folk were not chosen for their goodness or any of their attributes.

Similarly the salvation message teaches But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:4-5 and 8-9

Also of relevance here is Titus 3:5-6 which says : Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost : Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Truth be told, I am no good either! I am only a sinner saved by grace!
