more about “Aubrey de Grey Says We Can Avoid Aging “, posted with vodpod
Source: Ted.com

A true maverick, Aubrey de Grey challenges the most basic assumption underlying the human condition — that aging is inevitable. He argues instead that aging is a disease — one that can be cured if it’s approached as “an engineering problem.” His plan calls for identifying all the components that cause human tissue to age, and designing remedies for each of them — forestalling disease and eventually pushing back death. He calls the approach Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS).

With his astonishingly long beard, wiry frame and penchant for bold and cutting proclamations, de Grey is a magnet for controversy. A computer scientist, self-taught biogerontologist and researcher, he has co-authored journal articles with some of the most respected scientists in the field.

But the scientific community doesn’t know what to make of him. In July 2005, the MIT Technology Review challenged scientists to disprove de Grey’s claims, offering a $20,000 prize (half the prize money was put up by de Grey’s Methuselah Foundation) to any molecular biologist who could demonstrate that “SENS is so wrong that it is unworthy of learned debate.” The challenge remains open; the judging panel includes TEDsters Craig Venter and Nathan Myhrvold. It seems that “SENS exists in a middle ground of yet-to-be-tested ideas that some people may find intriguing but which others are free to doubt,” MIT’s judges wrote. And while they “don’t compel the assent of many knowledgeable scientists,” they’re also “not demonstrably wrong.”

“Aubrey de Grey is a man of ideas, and he has set himself toward the goal of transforming the basis of what it means to be human.”

… by the way GP, I was surprised that BU let you get way wid dat swipe at Obama higher up the thread… “The man is talking like Obama in generalities, but no specifics.” You must know that dat is David boy… but I agree wid you 100% on that score…

You think it too late to get Ron Paul back on the GOP ticket? 🙂

  2. MME

I dont much bout dese people politics. I just like to watch Profanity foam at de mout every nite as he try to denigrate Obama………unsucessfully.

You and I being scientists or at least students of science, know that whether right or wrong, we have to defend our position with facts and figures. But people in most other disciplines- especially in this age- just talk talk talk. But on analysis they only produce stuff for the compost heep at best.

I dont care if you and I disagree in debate, once you bring to de table issues worthy of thought, because when you do that I might learn something. I might have to modify my position or work harder. But unless we meking sport why should I waste time listening to hot air.

I agree with you. Even shit talk can be at a high level.

I was in a Pharmacology class in which at exam time to let of steam the men discused at length how they would design a PUSS-C antagonist!

The drug was supposed to slow down the sex drive and need for that commodity.

You should hear men detailing what the mechanism of action and duration of action and onset of action should be.

  4. LOL

I wonder what were the side effects.

  5. So we have Obama and Granddad, so who should we back again?

To respond to the barb tossed our way by MME we will simply respond that GP who claims to be a piece a scientist and at the same time embraces the meta-physical with a keen sense of spirituality has us speechless. It is definitely not a happy marriage…lol.

As for MME you give provocative a new meaning …lol.

I am not saying that Grandad is worthy. I dont think much of Grandad at all. I back Obama too. But I wish that Obama would give us details and put to silence for once the jackass whom I call Profanity on Fox News……..and Bill O’Rielly and others to a lesser extent.

    He might yet do so.

We all know that as blacks we must be better bigger sharper even to get in the race. So we must at all times dot our “I” and cross our “T”.

We have to make people under stand that we must be respected on merit, and we must leave them in a hail of dust.

For example when stupid illiterate Americam med students ask me about UWI, I arrogantly give them links on Sir GAO Alleyne, former head of PAHO inter alia. Or I remind them that one of the leading Neuro surgeons in North America was educated at HC and UWI.

When once a chap was talking about writers, I reminded that the Caribbean has two Nobel prize winners for literatuure etc Then they get links on the Brathwaithes and Lamming et al

I dont see that level of standing high above the competition in Obama.

I so enjoy your contributions here.

Why did did you leave the Far East under such a cloud?

Give me your side of the story.

  8. Straight Talk

    Thanks for your kind words.
Please explain your question about the Far East?

  9. GP:

Thanks for the lesson. Now, if my one centimetre “nodule” turns out to be malignant, I can have a ring ding discussion with the Oncologist! lol.

  10. GP I love ya thanks! I didnt understand a thing that was being said at first, however, I have at least understood 40 percent of this discussion and when I read it over I know I will be alright. if anyone ask me anything on the block or elsewhere I can hold my own thanks to you!
