As Barack Obama glides,”not effortlessly” to the white house, the demands on him have become more strident.
The queue of “expectation” for Barack Obama, has already started to form. He has not become President, but Prime Ministers, leaders and other interest groups have decided what they should have. In this staking out of vested interest, are we – those who wish him well – in danger of blanketing off this flower of hope?
In addition to those living in the high altitude of expectancy. There are others who have decreed the cupboard is already bare. Libyan President Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has already said Obama will be of no use to the Palestinans. He believes he is too closely tied to the cause of Israel…he cannot deliver for the Palestinans, he intones.
Further to the south – of Africa – they expect much of him. No doubt they believe his father’s blood – Kenyan – will somehow influence decisions in their favour.
As if not to be outdone, closer to home. Caribbean leaders plan to make their voices heard. They are uncomfortable with the Senator’s opinion about the proposed banking system Legislation and the impact it would have on the Caribbean region. They plan to get in early and could well make a play at the Caribbean Community Leaders Summit in New York.
Did you notice, I have not even mentioned America and Americans. The people who will vote him in or not, as the case might be. Within that mix there are those who wish him success…just for change. But first there is the little issue of getting the working class white vote, Hilary’ Clinton’s people to show some optimism. If they can, he might just be a shoe-in.
That is a long was a-way, expectation yes! However, I hope he is not overburdened with it. It would be a pity if Obama has to be a “miracle worker”, just to be a good President of America. I hope that will not be the case. There is even the case of him – Obama – being careful about his body language. He greeted his wife with a fist bump…innocent you might think. Oh no! not for Fox News channel presenter Ed Hill, who introduced an item with the words:
“A fist bump? A pound? A terrorist fist Jab?”
“The comment was quickly removed from public view and despite a half-hearted apology, so was Hill: Fox News cancelled the show.”
It is a long road to travel in becoming President of America…and longer still if you are Barack Obama.
