Geoffrey Hinton said AI systems were quickly evolving and could take the mantle of teachers in the coming decade. Geoffrey Hinton, regarded by many as the ‘godfather of artificial intelligence’ (AI) has predicted that the advancements in AI may not be “good news for universities”. Mr Hinton, who has been circumspect about the rise of the technology, said these AI tutors will be able to provide customised lessons to individuals by assessing their weak points, something that traditional educators had been unable to do.
Mr Hinton, who was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics alongside John Hopfield, said AI systems were quickly evolving and could take the mantle of teachers in the coming decade.
“AI systems are not there yet, but some time in the next 10 years, probably they’ll be really good,” he said in an interview.
“When a kid is learning something, the AI system will be able to see exactly what it is the kid misunderstands because the AI system has seen a million other kids. So if a private tutor that’s a person is like two times better, these will be three or four times better,” he added.
“It may not be good news for universities but it’s very good news for people learning stuff.”
Quizzed if this meant the end of universities, Mr Hinton remarked: “Maybe we won’t need them anymore.”
He, however, added that individuals may still need the institutions for research and apprenticeship.

“It will be comparable with the industrial revolution. But instead of exceeding people in physical strength, it’s going to exceed people in intellectual ability. We have no experience of what it’s like to have things smarter than us,” said Mr Hinton at the time.
“I am worried that the overall consequence of this might be systems more intelligent than us that eventually take control.”

@Rascal @David, yes by 2030, it will be commonplace for humans to have AIs as significant others as well as singularity. As with any new technology, there will be an adoption curve. Some portions of the population will more readily adjust to interacting with their new AI peers; others will resist for longer. The proliferation of AIs throughout our society will unfold like the famous Ernest Hemingway line about how people go bankrupt: Gradually, then suddenly. But make no mistake: this transition will be inevitable. It will be inevitable because AIs will be able to do so much of what humans do today, except cheaper, faster, and more reliably.
This is not a distant possibility. The technology is in many cases already good enough today. If we are honest with ourselves, a major reason why we are all so excited about AI in the first place—a major reason why AI offers such transformative economic opportunity—is that it will be able to do things more cheaply, more quickly and more accurately than humans can do them today. Once AI can deliver on this promise, there will be less need and less economic justification to employ as many humans as today in most fields. Almost by definition, in order for AI to have an impact on society and the economy, it will take people’s jobs. Of course, new jobs will also be created—but not as quickly and not as many, at least at first.
This job loss will bring with it tremendous near-term pain and dislocation. Political movements and leaders will arise in fierce opposition to this trend. Other segments of society will just as vocally champion the benefits of technology and AI. Civil unrest and protests will be inevitable; they will no doubt turn violent at times.
Bajans will clamor for their elected officials to take action, in one direction or another. However, global creative policies proposals like universal basic income will go from fringe theories to adopted legislation.

There is a US trade war with China where cost of planes due to tariffs will put manufacturers Boeing out of Business, USA is demanding Ukraine provide them access to rare earth materials used in IT technology manufacture on the grounds of “national security” matter. Wars are fought with AI and were recently tested in ME and Palestine. Anti-China propaganda is propagated by the West on a daily basis and repeated ad infinitum, where the West are hypocrites guilty of all the same crimes of spying on it’s people, data collection, removing and censoring information. In USA records of it’s racism is being deleted on the grounds that the truth is discrimination against whites.

Good and valid points by all. But consider that AI is a tool, and yes, it will replace jobs, just as machines // robotics have replaced jobs in factories.
The ability to use the tool, to manage the tool, is the significant gain, along with ‘David’s’ point on governance and 555Dub’s ‘ethical’ questions.
Concerned did note that this would result in domestic conflicts, quite true.
Universal basic income is a prerequisite for all of this to be effective, if not civil issues will result.
As 555Dub says, this is not straightforward, as current geopolitical tensions are heightened to a very serious level and global relationships at crossroads.
Seriously, Caricom leaders should really be having crisis meetings now, as I think that this is where we are at geopolitically.
Terence and 555Dub are right on that point.
It is of the utmost importance that Caricom work together to address socioeconomic, food supply and security at this point.
A lot needs to be put in place in case of global conflict.
That said, even without military conflict, the economic tensions, such as punitive actions for relationships, are enough of a concern.

However it has not one shiite to do with ‘AI technologies’.The REAL issue is that the VERY PURPOSE for which humans were created (IN GOD’S VERY OWN IMAGE) has now become so lost and so DISTANT, that what currently remain are a global collection of empty, useless, brass bowls, that reflect NOTHING but albino-centric SELFISHNESS, GREED, ENVY, HATRED and actual DISDAIN for the very CREATOR that took the time and trouble to breath life into our BBs.
