Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

Of late the blogmaster has been reluctant to post new blogs about the continuing demise of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). The main reason is that a large number of Barbadians have lost interest in what unfolds in George Street. The blogmaster’s perspective is supported by waning hits generated on blogs dealing with DLP issues.

The news that elected President Dr. Ronnie Yearwood and General Secretary Steve Blackett were expelled by the General Council was not unexpected for some of us. The Irresistible Force Paradox which asks what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object is relevant to the implosion occurring with the leadership of the DLP? The inability of the DLP to efficiently leverage the crossing of the floor by Ralph Thorne in February this year, AND, embrace President of the DLP Dr. Ronnie Yearwood who was elected in May 2022 continue to have national implications for the sustainability of the country’s system of governance.

A big part of the problem for the DLP is having to treat the ‘hangover’ of the loss decade- branded with telling effect by the BLP- and subsequent violent reaction it provoked from the electorate. Barbadians have developed a strong distrust and loss of confidence in the DLP since because of the embarrassment suffered during that period. The inability of the DLP to demonstrate it has the capacity to do a 2018 post mortem, execute an action plan in reasonable timeframe to remain relevant to an apathetic and cynical electorate does not augur well for them.

Thorne crossing the floor served as a litmus test to expose the leadership vacuum and divide in the DLP sooner rather than later. Thorne didn’t help by appointing two Senate picks without consulting the DLP hierarchy knowing his plan was to apply for membership of the DLP. This single decision has fuelled the distrust between President Yearwood and General Secretary Steve Blackett. The opposite is also true, Yearwood and Blackett did not respond to the problem to give room for a mutually beneficial outcome.

Of interest is that one of Thorne’s Senate picks, Senator Tricia Watson has been deliberate to stay above the rift in public. There is a view circulating that she is opportunistically waiting in the wings to pick up the pieces.

In response to the ouster from the party, Blackett has wasted little time sending a clarion call to the general membership of the DLP, to come out in numbers at the upcoming annual general conference to oppose the decision. Yearwood is quoted as saying it is a dark time in DLP politics.

Despite all the feel good statements from DLP talking heads, the blogmaster has been around local politics long enough to anticipate the ongoing imbroglio is not a binary one to solve. There is no single person in the leadership space with the qualities to bind the DLP factions. In order for the party to move forward an agreement with Blackett and Yearwood has to be negotiated. Yearwood and Blackett have support within the party. In case you have to be reminded Yearwood was elected to serve two years in May 2022.

How will the general membership respond at the conference next week to 33 members of the General Council overturning a decisions of hundreds. of members of the general body?

    David BU,i hold no brief for these modern day dems.However,i was an admirer of Mr Bsrrow for his foresight and delivery of policies,along with others like Mr Taitt,Dr Haynes and Dr Caddle.I sm not impressed by these modern day dems like the ex pm,Mr Thompson,Mr Stuart etc and hence my support for the bees,Mr Arthur,Mr Adams and Ms Mottley etc going forward.However,i would still like to see the dems gain a few seats if they get their act together for some balance in the house of assembley.

  3. What played out at the meeting captured on the YouTube video and made public was embarrassing to describe it kindly.

  4. PLT the link you provided is hopefully no indication of your thinking.

    To this writer these dated mind sets, and others, are precisely what are killing the DLP.

    How can it be possible for a faction of a party which after having suffered consecutive loses, 30-0, when given the breath of life by the crossing of the floor by RAT, could them seek to turn on itself by insisting that Thorne be not awarded the same status traditionally associated with such a person within its history?

    Did Errol Borrow himself, well lionized, not changed from a B to a D?

    And why should Blackette and Yearwood continue to insist that any position within the party, held by them, should act to distort established supremacy of the political leader?

  5. DLP are the epitome of the politics of corruption.

    Which continued after the global recession leading to national bankruptcy.

    Donville Innis’ defense in a US Court of Law for Money Laundering of Corrupted Bribes was along the lines ‘It is common practice in Barbados Politics’.

    He was sentenced to two years in prison.

    US Department of Justice Pres Release
    “Donville Inniss engaged in a bribery and money laundering scheme to line his own pockets at the expense of the people of Barbados,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicholas L. McQuaid of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “International corruption undermines trust in governments, threatens our national security, and prevents the free market from functioning fairly for law-abiding people and companies. Today’s sentence sends a strong message that the Department is committed to prosecuting corrupt officials like Inniss who seek to use the U.S. financial system to hide their bribe payments.”

    DLP were subsequently rightfully rejected twice by the people

    Stand up and be counted, says ousted ex-president

    by BARRY ALLEYNE

    A TOWN HALL MEETING held by concerned Democratic Labour Party (DLP) members supporting ousted former president Ronnie Yearwood and general secretary Steve Blackett took an unexpected turn last night.

    Members of the Barbados Police Service came to the premises of The Ellerslie School in Black Rock, St Michael, along with the DLP’s acting president Andre Worrell and acting general secretary Pedro Shepherd.

    Scores of Yearwood and Blackett supporters angrily left the confines of the meeting being held in the school’s auditorium, claiming Worrell and Shepherd had brought law enforcement in an attempt to end the meeting prematurely.

    As veteran DLP member Ricky Williams started to speak around 7:30 p.m., Yearwood and Blackett momentarily went outside to find out why police were on the compound.

    Worrell and Shepherd spent about ten minutes in a conversation with the three uniformed officers before leaving, after which Yearwood and Blackett re-entered the meeting without further ado.

    It was only last Thursday that Yearwood and Blackett were expelled from the party, and Worrell and Shepherd named to be acting in those respective positions.

    Meanwhile, during a member briefing streamed on YouTube last night, Worrell read out a laundry list of charges laid against both Yearwood and Blackett, explaining why the General Council took action last Thursday.

    An emotional Yearwood, though not slated to speak at the Ellerslie meeting, made a call to DLP members to stand up and be counted, and remake Barbados.

    “The best of us is yet to come,” he said to hearty applause. “We can remake our country but we first have to remake the DLP and make it a party of service to Barbadians.”

    He charged that the political system in Barbados was broken, but he remained hopeful.

    “I think we can fix it. I think our better days are ahead of us. What we are going through as a party has to happen. We have to clean house. The only way to offer something to Barbadians is to clean house,” he said.

    Yearwood said the DLP was still part of the cornerstone of Barbados’ political landscape, and people recognised plenty had gone wrong within the confines of George Street (party headquarters) that could have a profound effect on the country.

    The banished president said now was the most important time not just in the history of the DLP, but in politics overall.

    “This is the moment where we decide. We are being offered an opportunity to make a big decision. We are at the fork in the road. We go right or left,” the University of the West Indies law lecturer suggested.

    “We can build a new Barbados, a new community, a new culture. Or, we can choose to stay where we are, from poor housing, from school closure to school closure, from shooting to shooting.

    “We can remake our country but we first have to remake the DLP and make it a party of service to Barbadians.”

    Yearwood said there were enough brilliant minds in the party that would allow them to practise a politics of newness and of hope.

    “If the DLP fails, that would be a serious failing of the country. The party is a collection. You are the party,” he told the gathering. “The beating heart of this party has always been the membership.”

  7. Party sheds light on expulsions

    THE ATTEMPT TO FORM a new political entity using the resources of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) during an unauthorised meeting on August 8, was among the charges brought against former president Dr Ronnie Yearwood.

    Acting president Andre Worrell, in a livestreamed member briefing on YouTube last night, read out a laundry list of charges laid against both Yearwood and former general secretary Steve Blackett, and sought to clear the air on why the General Council took the decision to expel them last Thursday.

    Third vice-president Felicia Dujon said there were calls, emails and some came “with tears in their eyes”, querying whether the decision to expel the two members was too punitive. She said internal matters had to remain so but the briefing was held so that “no propaganda would allow you to be deceived”.

    Worrell said the attempt to form a new political entity allegedly unfolded during a meeting on August 8, called by Blackett, who was suspended from party duties since May 16.

    Among the charges: “Namely, the proposal that the property of the DLP at Kennington, George Street, St Michael, be appropriated for the purposes of a new political party to be established and titled The Democratic League.

    “That the said meeting amounted to a conspiracy to abolish and/or eliminate, and/ or create a competing policies party to the DLP using the property and the resources of the DLP.

    “The Disciplinary Committee heard the complaint at its meeting. They also examined evidence, witness testimony and they deliberated and came to a unanimous decision that Dr Ronnie Yearwood should be expelled from the party. They made their recommendation to the General Council, and the General Council at its meeting on 16th of August . . . ,” Worrell explained.

    Those against Blackett included withholding correspondence, using derogatory language towards political leader Ralph Thorne, the unauthorised tabling of a no-confidence motion against Thorne without prior knowledge of the General Council, unauthorised interviews with the media and bringing the reputation of the DLP into disrepute, among others.

    Some of the charges were in common.

    Worrell noted both Yearwood and Blackett were first asked to appear before the Disciplinary Committee at the end of May, but after member Ricky “Laker” Williams brought an injunction against the DLP, this was suspended until that matter was settled.

    Once it was finished, the pair was again summoned to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on August 6, but failed to do so. However, the committee met to hear the charges laid against Yearwood and Blackett.

    After the process – which took over two months – was explained by Worrell, Dujon said given this “damning report” it was important for the members to stand in support of the General Council and the Disciplinary Committee to protect the image of the party which had a structure in place to guide their actions.

    She said this decision was not easy to make because these were individuals they worked with and voted for, but the DLP “upholds accountability and transparency”.

  8. Blackett is obviously trying to whip up his support in the DLP based to make this weekend’s conference‘interesting’.

  9. Why would anyone take the DLP, or BLP seriously when they have let a 30-0 result stand for 6 years with no challenge?

    Both are prepared to work together to nullify the constitution and disadvantage all Barbadians by depriving them of their guaranteed protections under that instrument.

  10. Didn’t former AG Adriel Brathwaite go to court with a motion that challenged the composition of the Senate which was dismissed?

    David, this DLP swirling tornado will surely now flatten this once powerful edifice to oblivion.

    Regardless of the final outcome once the winds settle there will be raw pain that will never be soothed.

    We say that all politics is local but of course there are still many lessons to be learned from other places, outside the local battle ground ‘constituency’.

    Recently, when the US president was at his worst it was said that the key aide/advisors were the key hurdles to his stepping down … based on what THEY had to lose!

    We are nuanced enough to ‘understand’ where truth lurks there … and as I read of the actions of the former Gen Sec and Pres. I was reminded of those nuanced truths !

    The real pain, however, is that they were so inept in their intentions and now unceremoniously expelled. The long-term divisions this will create are just catastrophic.

    That is sad.

  12. @Dee Word

    You struck the nail squarely on the head.

  13. @David
    I got the impression that despite the presence of some a disaffected members of the DLP this was more a Ricky Williams meeting than a branch meeting and it had the flavour of a political platform meeting. However, some nuggets of information were gleaned from the meeting and I wondered why the CJ adjourned the injunction case until sometime next year which decision allowed the suspension of Yearwood and Blackett to remain in place and rendered them impotent as far as leadership/power of the DLP was concerned.

    A few more salient points that were made: Barrow faced internal opposition and didn’t expel anyone; Sandiford’s internal opposition led to his gov’t’s defeat, and no one was expelled.

    I also watched the explanation (attached) giving the reasons behind the expulsion of Yearwood and Blackett and I would observe that you can win a battle but lose the war.

    BTW, David it dawned recently to me 😅 that these new leaders have moved away from what seemed to be a fundamental aspect of our leaders … well since Grantley, anyhow: marrying or being partnered to a non-Bajan!

    I mean, think bout it for a sec or two (as this analysis deserves no more 🤣) , but the benefit of having an outside partner on whom to sound off about our lil Bajan, sorta incestuous affairs seemed to help, don’t you think!

    Ah well, the times are a-changing … so maybe the new model is a single but many partnered leader whose bite is surely just as impactful as his/her bark!🤷🏿‍♂️

    I gone.

  15. @ David

    What Knox is essentially suggesting is that the first 30-0 result should’ve been null and void, and elections held over and over and over, until ‘an Opposition was elected.’

    Bear in mind, general elections were held on January 19, 2022, 3 years, 8 months after May 24, 2018…… and the BLP won all 30 seats for the second consecutive time.

    The framers of Barbados’ Constitution probably did not anticipate the eventuality of a political party winning every constituency.

  16. @Sargeant

    It makes one wonder why we give the deference we do to members of the political clan. Can you imagine these are the people who block public scrutiny into the affairs of ‘private political parties’? Then we hear comments like it is a dark day for democracy.

  17. @Artax

    Agreed.

  18. In politics all publicity can be made to have high value.

    We’re willing to wager that as bad as these circumstances may appear to some the party is more likely to do better next time around, largely because of this public catarsis.

    Especially if it refuses to be guided by weak-kneed neophytes on blogs.

  26. Everything is going according to plan. The two BLP moles Yearrott and Thorn destroy the DLP from the inside – like wooden termites destroy wooden houses.

  27. One of the newspaper articles above, as scanned earlier, seems to have stated that the Yearwood faction might have used the DLP’s networks to arrange the meeting held last night at a school.

    If this reading is correct this would have approached another reason for Yearwood to be expelled. Would have other implications.

    For even if the executive council”s decision to expel is subsequently reversed, that Yearwood would have sought to bring the party into disrepute by activating its networks could cause concern and could also explain the actions of the new general secretary.

    No doubt that Ralph Thorne as the leading legal mind within would have spoken to the same and new general secretary about this matter.

  28. Yearwood has every right to speak to DLP people regarding his sacking

    there is a movement against Ralph’s leader ginalship* — the genesis of corruption, including DLP youth who believe that Thorn and his motley gang are well bang out of order

    people in Barbados seem to accept the nasty dirty games played as part of their culture of gutter politics

    Thorn and his gang could and should have taken their time and peacefully gained control within normal process when the time was right and if he had the support

    That person must have the confidence of those members of parliament not on the side of the government.

  30. Barbadians are obsessed on the wording of ‘law’ and but not it’s original intent..
    Like John and his nonsense about no valid Parliament because nobody else won a seat..
    .. or someone rejoining a party in Feb and hoofing out it’s leader in Aug clearly does not compute

  31. The party ‘leader’
    Yes LoO and DLP leader were almost always one and the same person. For Bs and Ds too!

    Think about it Kiki

    If you as an opposition need a member in parliament to be official.

    Then what sense would it make to have any opposition leader in parliament who has to refer to an unelected party official, like Yearwood or Blackett, before a single word could be uttered in the people’s house.

    This is exactly the fallacy which Yearwood and Blackett were trying to regularize.

    That Ralph Thorne himself seemed to have encouraged this fiction earlier on was surprising to this writer.

  32. Sandra Mason’s second task as President of the Republic was a FAIL

    her first task was the appointment of Independent Senators

    Thorne should have become/stayed an Independent LoO

  33. Just give it a rh rest.

    Thorne by virtue of crossing the floor left the president no choice to appoint him as leader of the opposition in the lower house.

    The fact that Thorne applied and was subsequently accepted as a member of the DLP meant that according to the DLP’s constitution he assumed political leader of the party. The fact Thorne and the President and General Secretary of the DLP have been unable to coexist is a DLP admin problem, nothing to do with the President. This matter has been flogged to death.

  34. It was not Blackett’s decision, he is one member of a seven member executive. Give it a rest, you are boring the big.

  39. Ex-PM convinced Dems can return to greatness

    YOU WIN SOME, you lose some.

    That’s what happens in general elections, former Prime Minister Freundel Stuart reminded his listeners at a Democratic Labour Party (DLP) political meeting on Sunday night.

    He was speaking at a St Michael South East meeting, hosted by former candidate Pedro Shepherd who is acting general secretary of the party, held at the Parkinson Memorial Secondary School.

    “There is nothing exceptional about losing an election. It happens. This is the process,” he said.

    Stuart was Prime Minister and president of the DLP in 2018 when the party suffered the first of successive 30-0 defeats to the Barbados Labour Party at the polls. On Sunday, he referred to the second 30-0 loss as a “mock election” but that there was nothing strange about losing elections.

    “But for some strange reason, after 2018 I was getting the impression that something unprecedented had happened in Barbados, and that the DLP should be ashamed, we should all walk around in a state of dazed disorientation, and that we should be ashamed to look in anybody’s face. That was the version of ourselves we were being asked to accept, and that a lot of us accepted.”

    According to Stuart, a high level of gas-lighting had led to many DLP supporters succumbing to the thought that they should feel ashamed about losing 30-0.

    Stuart noted that 14 general elections were held between the establishment of universal adult suffrage in Barbados in 1951 and the last DLP victory at the polls in 2013.

    14 elections

    “When we won the 2013 election, of the 14 elections held, the Democratic Labour party had won seven, or 50 per cent, and the Barbados Labour Party had won seven, also 50 per cent. So there was no superiority there or any inferiority,” he told the meeting.

    Stuart added that it was important to remember that as of 2018 when the DLP was 63 years old, 33 years of that period had been spent with the party holding the reins of Government in Barbados. “More than half,” he said to applause.

    “What about a record like that should anybody be ashamed of? You can’t want for a more impressive record than that,” he boasted.

    He said that based on that exemplary record, the DLP still had plenty to offer.

    “We need to get back to the best version of ourselves. We have not been relating to the real version of ourselves. We need to get back to being the real Democratic Labour Party that spent 33 years of its existence in Government and that won seven elections,” the former St Michael South Member of Parliament recommended.

    He noted that the version of the DLP he asked party members to return to was one highlighted by the hard work and commitment of its founding members.

    Stuart said it was a deviation from the DLP’s founding principles which had led to “interpersonal strife” now being seen within the party. (BA)

    DLP ‘REBOOT’

    STUART CRITIQUES GOVT, URGES PARTY TO REFOCUS ON ‘HUMAN’ DEVELOPMENT
    By Ryan Gilkes

    Former Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has thrown his weight behind Ralph Thorne, the political leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), in a rallying call for party unity and a return to core values.
    Speaking at a DLP St Michael South East Branch meeting at the Parkinson Memorial School on Sunday, Stuart praised Thorne’s character and leadership qualities, urging party members to support him as the DLP seeks to rebuild after crushing, back-to-back defeats at the polls.
    “Ralph has the character, the capacity and the courage,” Stuart declared. “Those three Cs: character, capacity, and courage. And to be not only the political leader of the Democratic Labour Party but whatever else flows from that.”
    Stuart, prime minister from 2010 to 2018, recounted his long-standing friendship with Thorne, which began during their time together as law students at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad in 1982. He praised Thorne’s integrity: “All the years I’ve known him, in Ralph Anthony Thorne, I’ve never found any guile.”
    The former prime minister’s endorsement comes at a crucial time for the DLP, which has faced internal strife and electoral defeat.
    Stuart lost re-election in 2018, losing all 30 parliamentary seats in the Dems’ worst-ever election defeat, followed by another complete shut-out from Parliament in the 2022 poll.
    Stuart emphasised the need for unity, saying: “I hope that coming out of meetings like this . . . we’ll get past the old childish and silly personal debates and get around to dealing with the real version of ourselves.”
    Stuart criticised those within the partywho he believes have disregarded the DLP’s constitution and rules.
    “Nobody can cherry-pick the rules in the Democratic Labour Party’s constitution — the ones that they are going to obey, the ones by which they feel bound, and the ones that they can reject,” he asserted.
    The speech also touched on broader policy issues, with Stuart contrasting the DLP’s approach to governance with that of the current administration. He argued that the DLP has always focused on “smaller and more personal and more human projects in Barbados,” such as building schools, which benefit every household “either directly or indirectly”.
    Stuart criticised what he perceives as the current government’s focus on largescale projects that do not benefit the average Barbadian.
    “Our priorities are human and personal,” he stated. “Our concept of development is personal and human—social and economic in quantity, but personal and human in quality.”
    The lawyer and former prime minister expressed confidence in Thorne’s ability to lead the DLP back to prominence, not just in Barbados but across the Caribbean. He urged party members to reject “misleading narratives” that have undermined the party’s confidence and to focus on the serious work ahead.
    “Politics is about power and the use of that power to lift people up,” Stuart declared.
    Stuart’s address highlighted the DLP’s duty to its supporters, even in the face of recent challenges.
    “If one person voted for us in 2022 – one person – we owe that person a duty for sticking their neck out and standing with us in a difficult situation,” he said.
    He argued that the DLP’s approach has always been about using political power to uplift the disadvantaged, contrasting this with what he sees as the current administration’s focus on benefiting the elite.
    “The presence of the Democratic Labour Party has been felt not only here in Barbados but across the Caribbean as well. And we have a lot to be proud of in that regard,” Stuart said.
    He repeatedly returned to the theme of unity and the need for the DLP to move past what he termed the “pettiness and childishness” that have plagued it in recent years. He urged the party to focus on theserious work that lies ahead, stressing that the DLP’s success has always been built on its commitment to improving the lives of Barbadians.
    Stuart issued a call to action, urging DLP members to rally behind Thorne and embrace what he called “a real version of ourselves, and I shared it or attempted to share it with you here this evening under the P’s. And the time has come for us to turn the corner now.” (RG)

  42. Every time a small light of hope appears in the DLP, some jackass brings back the Froon to douse it….
    Steupsss..

  43. @Bush Tea

    We have to give some time to what we thought were Tron’s satirical critiques. What if?

  44. Hahahahha @ BushTea, Froon of the “glorious years” fame. I just want to remind or inform that Singapore has had the same party (PAP) in power since independence.

  45. Wow, is Enuff comparing our system of government with Singapore? A government that is characterized as semi authoritarian? Then again he maybe onto something.

  46. @ Enuff
    “I just want to remind or inform that Singapore has had the same party (PAP) in power since independence.”
    ~~~~~~~
    …and Bushie just wants to remind you that Singapore does NOT tolerate things like;
    -Four Seasons,
    -Clear Water,
    -Steal Houses,
    -Bribe taking (donations) by ministers
    -HOPEless housing,
    -Clueless Energy planning,
    -Wasteful spending on shiite cricket,
    -Radical Vaccine scams
    Even spitting in public can be an issue.
    Cuh Shiite, Enuff !!
    Bushie would NEVER change a government like that either.
    On the OTHER hand, the Bushman would willingly exchange YOUR lot for six well trained monkeys who are know to avoid stealing.
  47. A perusal of social media and instead of DLP members pushing a narrative of reconciliation and healing the sniping and snarling continues. If they believe that their annual conference will be the catalyst for addressing the deep division within the party, come again.
  48. @ Bush Tea,
    You have to pity Enuff. However you have known him long enough to understand his restricted mindset.
    His Heroine, “The Mighty Empress”, is simply your archetypal black leader or should I say someone’s useful idiot.
    The link below merely confirms that we have never been in control of our destiny in Barbados. Not when when our leaders have become the overseers of the plantations to serve the interests of foreign concerns.
    I hope that progressive domestic Bajans will take out the time to watch this documentary.
    By the way, I wonder if Quaker John and William Skinner could ask their esteemed leader when and if she will bring in the new and much anticipated constitution.
    May God rescue Barbadians from their broken and compromised leaders.
  49. Fruendel Stuart was a total waste of time, as prime minister and should never have been oppointed to lead the party, be in any position so to.
    That this coward, recognized by Barrow as such in the 1970s, could have taken over the party must tell us something is deeply wrong, not only with the DLP, but with the overall system.
    William Skinner talks about leadership all the time but nobody, including Wickham, has ever told us which measurable and scientific metrics make up good leaders.
    Weeee have not even considered the vexing question of whether good leaders are born or made.
    In the absence of these the country will be forever subjected to a political lottery where idiots like Yearwood stick around long enough and find themselves in charge.
    And although, from pass experience, we roughly estimate Thorne to have better political instincts, though weee remain deeply concerned about a seemingly newly found religious fervor, Thorne is merely an extensión of the same unsophisticated approaches which we continue to deploy.
    Then we complain about predictable and diliterious outcomes.
