Wow, who said a week is a long time in politics?

The emergence of Ralph Thorne if nothing else has spiced up the political pot in Barbados. Until his crossing of the floor about two weeks ago it was all negative political chatter and bleak outlook mostly directed at the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).

Chances are – we will know in the fullness of time – if Ralph Thorne’s attempt to breath political life into a moribund DLP may yet come to nought. Lest we forget the DLP was decimated in the 2018 and 2022 general elections, losing all 30 seats contested. By any measure it was an unequivocal and unprecedented rejection of the DLP continuing to struggle with recovery.

It is obvious, even to a casual observer, Thorne was strategic in his decision making to return to the DLP although his reentry was not the smoothest. All things concerned his initial objective appears to have been achieved – we will have to wait to observe what backroom deal was negotiated between the old and new guard. Clearly Thorne has the upper hand as the sitting member of the House of Assembly, however, Yearwood’s effort at makeover of the party, ‘control’ of the DLP Executive and the public’s continuing negative perception of the DLP post 2018 would have given him some leverage at the negotiating table after retired trade unionist and DLP stalwart Bobby Morris had to be parachuted in to navigate a truce between the old and new guard that threatened to derail Thorne’s plan.

No doubt Thorne’s plan was to use earned media created by the 2024-2025 Estimates. and to a large extent he has achieved the objective. Thorne’s acerbic interventions during the Estimates debate has added to the theatre of local politics, however, the polity remains critically compromised. It is still a concern our governance system remains severely hobbled by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) winning all seats in parliament.

It is early days how the Thorne dynamic will influence DLP politics to treat with a wounded member of the duopoly, clearly attempts to create a third party political movement continues to fail in Barbados. Thorne may not be the one but many are fervently praying his action will be the catalyst of good things to come to improve governance in the country.

Although early days, Thorne’s political style and approach on the opposition bench starkly contrasts with Joe Atherley who attempted a similar action in 2018. Atherley’s laid back style and lack of a mass party support has ensured relegation to being a political footnote.

After years of Barbados’ electoral system being considered one for others in the global community to emulate, the first past the post system has been exposed as wholly inadequate to support a relevant system of government. Mottley despite her performance in the international arena has been the predictable political animal on the home front by showing little appetite to throw a bone at the political opposition. An example is her refusal to amend the rule to allocate subvention monies to struggling political parties.

We will have to wait for the script Cometh the hour, cometh Ralph Thorne to play out. The blogmaster suspects a critical piece of the puzzle will be how the general membership reacts at next year’s DLP annual conference as it prepares for another general election.

Me, I said it, that’s who..

You need to wake up and smell the coffee.

Stop hyping up 1 MP defecting, 1 Leader of Opp, change of 2 Senators as a biggie.

    It ain’t no big deal.

MIA ain’t no ordinary woman, she’s a political animal, who crushes men’s balls and emasculates them.

She will be going on a World Tour next drinking champagne with rich white men to prove Women rule the world.

And, oh, um, waiter, can you bring the champagne
A real estate fronts as opportunities arousing
To make some condos out of low income housing
Immediately we need some media heat
To say that gangs run the street and then we bring in the police fleet
Harass and beat everybody till they look inebriated
When we bought the land motherfuckas will appreciate it
Don’t worry about the Urban League or Jesse Jackson
My man that owns Marlboro donated a fat sum”
That’s when I stepped back some to contemplate what few know
Sat down, wrestled with my thoughts like a sumo
Ain’t no one player that could beat this lunacy
Ain’t no hustler on the street could do a whole community
This is how deep shit can get
It reads macaroni on my birth certificate
Poontang is my middle name but I can’t hang
I’m getting hustled only knowing half the game

Shit, how the fuck I get up out this place

  2. As I noted in the previous blog, the first calls for Thorn’s resignation are already being made. For his tirade against the homeless charity.

Doesn’t the game plan of our Supreme Leader dictate that Thorn should only resign a month before the next election in order to cause maximum damage to the DLP? I advise the Leader of the Opposition to stick to the game plan please.

  3. @ David,
Last night we saw the re-emergence of Gorgeous George Galloway who was elected last night in perhaps one of the most exciting night’s in a British by-election. He alongside another independent candidate steam rolled the conventional two major parties with an enormous majority.

His speech is a reminder to Barbados BLP that even the mighty can fall. His vocabulary and his concise, economical measured way of communicating is in sharp contrast to the long winded orator style of Barbados MPs.

Hopefully, Thorne can draw some breath from Galloway’s inspirational victory.

  4. @TLSN

Galloway does have an inimitable style.

  6. @ David,
He’s called gorgeous for a reason. The British media have gone crazy. This man brings much excitement and fear to the British political establishment. He stands alone and is hated by the establishment for this reason. Long live GGG.

  7. @TLSN

Hopefully Thorne will be the thorn in the mould of GGG. Wishful thinking we know.

  8. The writer of the above remains festooned on a global island where duopoly political systems everywhere have outlived their usefulness.

Indeed, from America to New Zealand, from the proverbial A to Z, nowhere is there any potentiality, in the West particularly, for this scheme beloved so much by his kef and kin, is working, can ever be able to work for the majority of the peoples, has ever served the masses and therefore should be allowed the hasty death so well deserved.

Further, there is a clear rise of the nascent feudalism.

Recall, the attempts by empire to impose bulling with confidence that all of human civilization must be so bent, pun intended.

Recall, the attempts by the new media types to be viciously Orweilian. Houses such as YouTube, for example, are banning people for saying that America and the West have been supporting Nazis in Ukraine. The truism that the West has alway been racist, fascist, exceptionalist, representative of the foundation of the Hitlerite ideals, could not have been spoken.

That the Jews are committing genocide in Palestine cannot be spoken on mainstream media even as the ICJ has severally so determined, or nearly. Evidence, that the South Afrika case was largely not carried on the first day. But on the second, the Zionist response was.

    Democracy? Duopoly?

That X or Twitter would ban people for speaking uncomfortable truths.

These and more are all acts anthetical to socalled enlightenment or democracy or even a fictitious two-party statism.

That the writer seeks comfort in the minor realignment of the political furniture speaks to a vacancy of critical thought.

The truth is and shall always be that Ralph Thorne and Ralph Thorne alone is no savoir or protector of the two-stage political theatre as always hoped for by some.

For Ralph Thorne still has a dead DLP, like an albatross weighting him down. There is nothing else behind him. At the end of the day Thorne remains a conservator of this very system being rejected everywhere.

And as much that it maybe temporarily refreshing to have one more voice in opposition to the Mottley dictatorship, there is nothing fundamental about Ralph Thorne which should imbue anyone with quaint notions suborned by a Moses Complex.

After all, Thorne is already a short man. And short men have been well known for certain proclivities viz a viz power relationships😜

Your analysis of Thorne is quite correct in terms of our political culture.
What we find more than mildly amusing is the laughable attempts we are making to disguise our tremendous disappointment in the current regime.
As you correctly stated Thorne’s political gymnastics have provided some light relief but it certainly is no savior from the twin establishment or it cannot successfully obscure the let down now being endured by others
    Well put !

  11. The issue is not about Thorne being a saviour, in the absence of nothing we must start with something to ignite the burn. It is not anything difficult to understand. Why is it good Barbadians are unwilling to offer themselves for public service/politics and as important why are Barbadians like many elsewhere happy with a duopoly? Vacuous mouthings do not change this reality. Those that present to run for politics are in the majority bottom feeders, then we have the highest expectations. What a contradiction!

  12. “we must start with something to ignite the burn”?

I smell the smoke of rebellion here … Time for our Supreme Leader to stamp out the flames with high riding boots.

Patriots are happy to submit to our Supreme Leader because only she has the knowledge to rule this island. What rebels call unconditional submission, decent patriots call civic duty towards the state and the party.

  13. “The issue is not about Thorne being a saviour, in the absence of nothing we must start with something to ignite the burn.”

Sometimes it’s better to do nothing to let Governments destroy themselves with infighting. Bad politicians thrive on criticism to make up lies and spin to counter truth.

  14. Let them destroy themselves and the people in the process. Like we know how that will end.

  15. “Let them destroy themselves and the people in the process. Like we know how that will end.”

The point made went over your head..

    Take Trump :
Media and Online Avatars trying to stop Trump in 2016 inadvertently and invariably helped his team of strategists with their psyops

    Take Israel :
People criticising Israel’s actions in Gaza help their War Propaganda machine make up new lies without any proof.

You try to hard in your obsession with politics and do not know the “We Wei”* way
which means not too much and not too little in daily practice cultivation work

Wu wei means – in Chinese – non-doing or ‘doing nothing’. It sounds like a pleasant invitation to relax or worse, fall into laziness or apathy. Yet this concept is key to the noblest kind of action according to the philosophy of Daoism – and is at the heart of what it means to follow Dao or The Way.

Wu wei is an ancient Chinese concept literally meaning “inexertion”, “inaction”, or “effortless action”.

  16. What are the rules of Wu Wei?
    Do’s and Dont’s

    Do
Practice patience and trust in the process.
    Don’t
    Force outcomes through excessive control.

    Do
    Embrace flexibility and adaptability.
    Don’t
Succumb to impulsiveness and reactionary behavior.

    Do
Prioritize essential tasks for focused action.
    Don’t
    Overburden yourself with unnecessary responsibilities.

Finding Balance, Achieving Results, Stop Swimming Against The Tide, Go With The Flow Blah Blah Blah.. Blah Blah

In different schools of political philosophy, wu-wei is a principle of governance.

Perhaps the best approach for the opposition should not even be a Thorne issue but a collective DLP Team effort where Thorne is the Parliamentary spokesman representing the party

  20. DLP do not have the power to fix anything at the present moment..
but should formulate their own policies and manifesto by addressing all problems with Government and identifying practical workable solutions

  21. Politics in Barbados is ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ….

  22. The Throne of Thorne?

This Freudian Slip may conjure a prickly seat on which he sits.

The ease in which a would be king or dictator maybe deposed.

The irony of a boy from Grazettes becoming one step from absolute power

A power play, despite collective mouthings, requires many nights, knights, of long political knives.

The fake infusion of an unholy Yellow blood for the Red

    Well, how poetic!

    If not, farcical?

  23. It speaks volumes that the opposition leader is now lashing out at black homeless people as hard as he can.

The DLP is once again proving itself to be a puppet of the White Shadows, with which the party has been oppressing the black masses since independence.

  27. Thorne ‘not backing down’

There will be no backing down by the Leader of the Opposition in his quest for answers and to hold the Government accountable.

King’s Counsel Ralph Thorne made that clear yesterday, two days after he and at least three members on the Government’s side clashed during debate on the Appropriation Bill, 2024, in the House of Assembly.

When the sitting resumed yesterday with Minister of Tourism Ian Gooding-Edghill and tourism officials in the Well of the House, in a measured tone Thorne said: “I want to remind Government that I have a duty to this Parliament, to the people of this country, to seek accountability from Government . . . . It is a duty from which I will not resile and I ask the Government in the exercise of its own mandate to accommodate us in our duty to seek accountability.”

Last month, Thorne departed the ruling Barbados Labour Party, which held all 30 seats, to become the Opposition Leader and almost immediately joined the Democratic Labour Party and became its political leader.

Yesterday, he said the tourism issue was a patriotic one, and to Gooding-Edghill stated: “There shall be no hostility towards you, there shall be no hostility towards this industry; this is a moment in patriotism.”

However, the Christ Church South Member of Parliament said that after two days of the Appropriation Bill debate, it had become a matter of some regret that “a minister in this Government”, in response to his questions, took personal and professional offence and considered the nature of his questions to be an interrogation, “nasty and vicious”.

“Minister [Gooding-Edghill], I don’t expect that attitude from you. I believe that you will give it your best shot but again I say. . . that I will not resile from my mandate, from my responsibility, to ask questions.

“I will not resile from my responsibility to represent the interest of the people of this country in respect to a Government that spends money, that spends the people’s money, and there is no nastiness nor viciousness intended nor exercised in my mandate in my duty.

“So if I am met with that attitude, I will not resile from my responsibility . . . . I have a legitimate right to question and I will question and I will do so within the rules of this House,” he said.

Thorne said he would continue above the noises to scutinise and criticise, and where wrongdoing is revealed, chastise.

“I look forward to a debate that is sober, that is honest, which reveals the integrity of this Government. I look forward to an abandonment of that unfortunate attitude that I met on Tuesday/Wednesday . . . . I resent it, I resist it, I reject it and I will continue to abide by my duty,” he declared.

On the tourism issue, he said the competitiveness of the sector made the tourism planner’s work stressful, having to keep an eye on a volatile industry with competition from Europe and other places.

“I come today in support of this industry on behalf of the people of Barbados,” he said. ( AC)

  28. The “need for chaos” theory and why certain people seek to subvert or overturn elite institutions.

So I’m particularly interested in not so much trust as mistrust and not so much reliable information as misinformation, trying to figure out, well, why is it that some people are extremely hateful on social media? Everything that can go wrong in an advanced democracy, that is what I find particularly fascinating. And of course, that also informs us, to some extent, about why things sometimes go right.

So in many ways it was one of those things that often happens in science. There’s something you don’t understand, and then you begin to dig deeper into it and suddenly something completely new emerges. And when we began understanding or doing research on the spread of misinformation, what we were expecting was exactly this sort of clear pattern of polarization, this clear partisan divide that you would have, people on the left wing sharing misinformation about elites on the right wing and people on the right wing sharing misinformation about people on the left wing.

What we found was exactly as you’re describing, that there is a sizable group that just shares everything. And we tried to see, well, what is it actually that they want? If they don’t just want to hurt one of the established parties within the system, what is it then, really, that they want?

  36. This newly minted leader of the opposition has his work cut out for him.

We are to wonder what will become of his legal practice. For clearly, Thorne had become a leader amongst his peers. Certainly, they’ll be no cushy government gigs. The kinds of assignments, one of which, like Johnny got, which could mean tens of million, per.

For the personal and political benefits, annual party subvention and emoluments, together must be unattractive at best, when thusly compared.

Thus far, weeee discern no substantial departure from the philosophical, rechtorical, machinational paths so well trod.

Thorne speaks about ‘democratic-socialism’ as a value both parties share.

Well, socialism or democratic-socialism has always been, in political science, if there is such a thing, an halfway house to account for the inequitous social class differentials, as on the way to communism.

For unlike the popular canard, believed here by most, there are few if any countries or regions, including the USSR, which were able to make the transition from socialism or democratic-socialism to communism. A project never completed!

Weeee are left to presume that this could not possibly be the deeper meaning of Thorne’s claims. And would therefore suppose that he simply means more of the same. The same we’ve had since independence. As evidenced by his insistence that a backward, elitist, educational system must continue as before, absent some tinkering with syllabi.

Of course, being an HC boy, and given his social class origins, these stark internal contradictions are left to stare at us all.

Even as there remains a need to dispense with all these systems, including neoliberal capitalism, given their failures across the board.

  37. Nondual Thought For Self Realization And Spiritual Enlightenment

Acting out the game political charades there is no difference between them

you would have thunk this specimen a political jobbie who switched between BLP and DLP in a single moon cycle could see the nonduality of the duopoly perhaps he is neither DLP or BLP or both

what is right and what is wrong or are they the same has he done the right thing

    Contemplate the following
what is that highest level of pure subjectivity for which everything else is an object?

consider the formless silent self which is of the nature of pure consciousness
and fully expanded awareness as you contemplate this question a bit further

now gently shift your awareness deeper focusing on the mind itself and the thoughts that give shape to these forms

the forms you observe are impermanent
    constantly shifting and changing
yet they are observed by the same unchanging mind

now gently shift your awareness deeper
because you can observe your thoughts
that means there is an intelligence beyond the mind

recognise that the mind with all it’s fluctuations and modifications is an object to be perceived while the pure awareness that perceives the mind stands apart as the ultimate observer

notice how this stream of thoughts ever changing and impermanent contrasts starkly with the unchanging nature of pure awareness

you are fully immersed in this present moment
untouched by all worries suffering attachments or expectations

this state of perfect contentment and relaxation is not something external to be sought after it is your innate nature the very essence of who you are and the source for which all happiness and satisfaction flows

embrace this understanding as you dwell in the silence

We seem to be just spinning top in mud. We still cannot work out proper garbage collection.
Once we could go in Parliament and listened to enlightening discourse on national matters , they now pull guns and tell each other about their mothers’ private parts.
We now tell citizens we “ gine drop letters in dey tale” and they’re talking “foolishness”

ARE YOU SUGGESTING THAT THERE WILL BE A MASS EXODUS FROM BARBADOS AS OCCURED IN THE 70’S IN GUYANA AND JAMAICA ACCOMPANIED BY FLIGHT OF BOTH HUMAN CAPITAL AND RESOURCES?
OR HAS IT ALREADY OCCURED PARTIALLY?

It’s really a symptom of the crudeness that we have allowed to creep into how we communicate with each other. We have abandoned polite discourse and replaced it with the : “ I don’t care anything ‘bout yuh variety”
    It’s supposed to be muscular.
The hypocrisy is that when we are speaking to those we consider to be at our level of education and social standing, we know “ how to behave.”
Perhaps when the current Deputy PM , has reason to disagree with Bizzy Williams or one of his nephews or nieces, she would tell them they are talking foolishness or she “gine drop a letter in their tail”
    We’ll wait and see.
