Why do we insist in pretending that there is a difference between the BLP and the DLP? They are both social democratic parties. Both struggle to manage the economy and society of about 300,000 people marooned on a small island in the Atlantic. It ain’t easy. Some leaders have marginally better teams and so manage marginally better that others.

Wunna know that I always have a story. In Arch Hall there was a wonderful tailor. He made nice fitting suits for rich men, and nice fitting suits for poor workmen like my father. Every man and woman should have their business suits, church suits, wedding suits, funeral suits custom made by an excellent tailor. If Barbados no longer has excellent tailors then we need to train some, If an ordinary workman from a village can look good when attending a church or a wedding or a funeral, then so can our senior officials.
It ain’t that hard.

Politician stereotyping
I’ve worked hard and long to overcome my prejudices. For the most part, I’ve been successful. I no longer have the automatic negative response that I used to have towards certain groups and categories of people. People are people. There is no person who can be totally defined by their group affiliation. There is no group made up of individuals who all think, feel and act identically.
Though I know this intellectually, sometimes it can be hard for the emotions to catch up.
That said, there is one group in particular which I have struggled to overcome my prejudice towards. It has been hard to not paint all politicians with the same brush. That brush was usually dipped in shades of deep distrust and disappointment. It’s time to expand my range of colours and use different shaped brushes to create my image of the political class. Even if only for the reason that reality often lives up to our expectations.
I used to think that a change in our political culture would come from our politicians changing. I realise now that there is more to it than this. The people also have to change our view of who and what a politician is.
If we have low expectations of politicians, then we should expect that is the level they will seek when they rise from among us. If a person comes from a culture that prejudges politicians negatively, then we shouldn’t be surprised if, when that person decides to enter politics, they leave a lot to be desired. The culture sets the bar low.
Some people might be reading this and thinking, “That’s commendable.”
Then there are some reading this and telling themselves, “He Green like he turning foolish in trute. Bun a fyah pun a politician!”
Both reactions are understandable.
Thinking in stereotypes is never ideal. However, situations are not always ideal. Sometimes a quick judgement that leaves
us better safe than sorry is the best we can do emotionally. Caribbean politics can be an emotional ride. Low voter turnouts are people judging the situation and bailing out. This is not sustainable, though. Everyone will still get dragged along eventually.
Lower intelligence
Some studies have correlated prejudicial attitudes with lower intelligence. The tendency to rely on simplistic stereotypes may be evidence of an unwillingness or inability to handle the complex mental task of separating a person from the image of them or their group in your mind.
There may be a lack of capacity to sort through the nuances of their unique situation, character and personality.
Prejudice is often just lazy thinking.
It might be unwise to assume that you can bake a yam in the skin and eat it just so because that is what you do with English potatoes and they are both ground provisions. You would laugh at the man who straight pulls rubbing alcohol because “All is rum”.
I know I am not the only one to have felt, with a heavy heart, that “all is politicians”. But everybody has a unique story. If you know and understand a person’s story, it is harder to judge them and lump them in with a stereotype. The same goes for a group. Politics of inclusion, a lesson
This past week, local armchair political critics had a field day. Chris Sinckler, former Minister of Finance, was pictured with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in the power-affected corridors of the World Bank. Social media went viral.
And there was also this Daily Nation statement of May 3 from Dr Ronnie Yearwood, the new Democratic Labour Party (DLP) president, who said: “There have been missteps in the past; there have been Cabinets on the other side and their ministers have said some pretty awful things, but at this point in the party’s juncture I, as party leader, I am telling you there is space in this party . . . whoever you are.”
Statements from Cabinet ministers on the other side? I have been in town long, so that this statement searched my brain.
Dr Yearwood is peddling a politics of inclusion. What else does “space in this party” mean? That policy is desirable. Yet, when in 1976 Tom Adams, the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Prime Minister, started the first steps of a “politics of inclusion”, it was thrown back in their faces like a bucket of cold water by the DLP.
In its early days, the DLP had created the membership passport. It was blue, and you could get political preferment if you had one. The BLP in power pledged to change this practice.
As a start, Adams decided to find out how many vacancies for casual employees such as maids, janitors, watchmen and drivers existed in the Public Service. He told the DLP Opposition that whenever such vacancies arose, the DLP could nominate 40 per cent; the BLP would nominate the other 60 per cent. Thus the BLP began to break down the harsher edges of partisan politics as practised by the Dems.
Smith resigned
In the highly energetic political atmosphere of the mid-1970s, this gentleman’s agreement worked well . . . until the St Michael South Central byelection. Sir Frederick “Sleepy” Smith had resigned after a long career, thereby allowing Dr Richie Haynes, allegedly the second most powerful man in Barbados, to run for the DLP.
Smith always said he won the seat by a pack of cigarettes, meaning by about 20 votes, and a vigorous campaign was on.
During the last days of the campaign, Sir James Cameron “Cammie” Tudor, a disciple of Niccolo Machiavelli, if ever there was one, advertised a public meeting, at which, he said, he wanted to speak only to supporters of the governing BLP. Those who knew Cammie well smelt a rat and two
mice! They were not disappointed.
Sir James Cameron Tudor, a speaker of unmatched oratorical skills, declared to BLP supporters that their votes for the BLP were now wasted votes. He disclosed the gentleman’s agreement and cunningly advised his BLP hearers that “they (the BLP) have taken your jobs and given them to our people.”
The rat and two mice danced, and the ghost of Machiavelli, whose birth date is May 3, smiled from the platform.
Raw with anger
This betrayal irritated the Hon. Lionel Craig to the core. Craig, a man whose support for the BLP started on the day the BLP lost an election, when he was moved by the insulting treatment of Sir Grantley Adams by DLP supporters, was raw with anger.
Not long after, his temper boiled over, goaded by taunts of his opponents. His response in Parliament was caustic: if it was left to him, if your name is DLP, even if it is Douglas Leopold Phillips, you can’t eat. He would not be part of any such continued agreement going forward. Cammie’s artifice had gotten under Craig’s skin. So much for stage one of the politics of inclusion.
Karma in the form of Haynes’ disruptive political actions, resignation and formation of the National Democratic Party with three of his DLP colleagues returned to haunt the DLP. Alas, the local early politics of inclusion was now dead in the water.
If the DLP is now claiming a big tent, is it adopting that approach out of sheer desperation? Because they have been twice brutally chastened by an electorate which has no faith in DLP’s economic skills nor in the practice of their raw-edged partisanship.
In the meantime, Miss Kim Tudor, a former DLP candidate, is appointed Director of National Insurance on merit – her candidature for the DLP in the 2018 election did not disqualify her.
The political record shows that there is nothing that the DLP can teach the Bees about the politics of inclusion. The big tent was first rooted in Roebuck Street as a permanent structure. The Sinckler and Tudor appointments are evidence. And did the BLP not erect a statue of Errol Barrow? Philosophically , I cannot support gradualism at this stage. I have heard that from the sixties and the same group of poor black people that were being kicked in the ass back then are still getting their asses kicked today.

One of the largest supermarket chains in America is owned by the employees, the shareholders and the family that started the business.
Every single year the said employees get in the mail, the state of their dividends with the company. The company also employs many young people and assist them with their college tuition.

I am glad you no longer have to wait on a bus for four hours. I did not catch any transport bus for several years. I depended , when needed , on the mini bus.
I have never had garbage keeping for four weeks because my garbage will never pile up in front no where I live for any four weeks. I am not that clean a person. A dirty person like me would have found a way to dispose of my garbage. Clean people like you obviously will let it pile up until the government buy garbage trucks. I am not clean like you.
Now as I told you recently let me repeat: Try buying your groceries with the new buses and garbage trucks. Take them to the supermarket.
You are a complete joker. The people ain’t care. ‘bout that now. They are trying to let the few pennies they have stretch.
Read today’s Nation and see that the front page is about garbage trucks and new buses. Turn on VOB they talking about garbage trucks and buses. Barbados Today , garbage trucks and buses.
Not a soul ain’t talking about the high cost of living and the supermarket shelves going empty and people buying the cheapest detergent.

Lorenzo and @ Frank are irreversible jokers. Why would I venture to tell a lie like that when I know if asked to name the chain, I would not have an answer. I go further : I know of a manager in the same chain, who went to work there as a college student. After graduation, he decided to return and worked his way up to manager.
About, four or so years ago, in a group discussion, he informed that when he retires , he would have over a million dollars coming toward him.
These jokers can see no farther than Roebuck or George Streets and all the hell they talk about is embarrassing crap like : who buy buses , who turn on the water and who garbage get pick up. In the meantime the country is in a very serious need of a blasted radical and progressive reset.
I know a few Barbadians who worked with companies such as Bellsouth and other utility companies in New York. They have not driven a stroke in donkey years because when those companies were restructuring in the eighties , they gave their workers some remarkable packages. They were given free health insurance for life; free internet service for life and so on. They still brag about the packages to this day.
While in our country companies close down and the employees national insurance contributions are taken out of their wages and they never reach the NIS office ! Not one single employer has ever faced a jail term for such widespread stealing.
They are several businesses in the USA that are owned in some measure by the employees. I think Bizzy Williams Group comes the closest in that regard.
It is time that @ Lorenzo learns that while his loyalty to his party is admirable, there is no need to clown himself almost every week on BU. -

Sadly true, we are an island full of socialists, loafers, idlers, trade unionists, welfare workers and more. Entrepreneurship is as far away as the moon and confined to minorities because they can’t laze around in public service like the masses.
Just look at our banknotes: All socialists, welfare workers, trade unionists and other bumblers who have spent their entire lives only fighting free entrepreneurship and have always lived at the expense of others.

I am doing no such thing. This question of worker/ employee participation and ownership in the companies they work for, has been around since the early seventies.
Back then, we actually had progressive Black men speaking out against all inequalities.
I am not into the gotcha yuh business . I left high school about two hundred years ago.
I have very deep core beliefs that are tied to my ideology and political philosophy . Anybody who knows me will not be surprised at anything I have said on BU.
I am not looking to win arguments.
I don’t belong to any clique on BU. I have no “ sidekicks” and I am not into alignment but some on this blog believe that they can force others to go after those they apparently have a problem with.
I don’t play that. I give and I take. I always look for those who are close or have ideologies and philosophies that are similar to mine. It’s only natural.
So my Brother all I am saying is that the same way some companies treat their employees well others can do so. I personally don’t care if they are in China or Canada. I don’t card if they are in Brooklyn or Bridgetown.
Throwing nothing……….. just saying.
I don’t know where Bellsouth is this morning and I don’t care.

The only thing I can agree on u with is that in Barbados there should be away for the employees to share in the profits of the companies and that will also assist in productivity
This going about comparing what American company can do and crying down bajan company for not doing the same is no no for me
It is like comparing how much meat u can get from. Buffalo to what u can get from a BBS and how many mouth each can feed .Look up how many employees and how many billons in profit/revenue the two companies you meantimes makes / used to make compared to the top companies in Barbados then you will see how they are able to do thins like pay for employees education and insurance
Again. Note the the small companies in the USA cannot offer the same kind of incentive to their employees like the bigger companies can . She
Insurance is something I think would be better obtained through umbrella group of unions

My criticism of the local welfare state should not obscure my patriotism and loyalty to the Supreme Leader. Of course, Europe is a bad hellhole in large parts. We, on the other hand, are paradise on earth, a premium island with a prime minister more powerful among her peers than Putin and Xi combined.

Reports reaching the DAILY NATION indicate that Assistant Superintendent of Prisons DeCarlo Payne is now in charge of Dodds Prisons, at Dodds, St Philip.
When contacted yesterday about this development, Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams said he would speak to the matter concerning the Superintendent in due course as well as his announced investigation into the prison.
“At the appropriate time I will make a statement concerning all of these matters,” he said.
At the end of last month Abrahams announced that a wide-ranging enquiry was to be conducted into the operations of the penal institution.
He said Attorney Philip Pilgrim QC would chair
the investigation, assisted by sociologist Dr Lisa Jaggernauth and senior lecturer in the Department of Management Studies at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, Dr Ahkentolove Corbin.
Of the investigation, which is to last three months, the minister said: “We have had some complaints and some concerns about the operations at Dodds. There are issues that have been raised about the recruitment processes, the promotions processes, the treatment of staff. Concerns raised in relation to inmates about the medical care, protection of inmates they are in transit or attending court or clinic.
“So it is an opportune time as well to do a departmental enquiry into the operation of Dodds Prisons to address a lot of the complaints that we have there,” he added.
When contacted yesterday, trade unionist Caswell Franklyn, who is a consultant to the Prison Officers’ Association, confirmed that Superintendent Nurse was on leave and suggested that it was as a result of the announced probe.
“I understand that it would not be fair to the process if you are having an investigation going on at Dodds Prisons and he is there.
“He has been placed on leave to facilitate the investigation.”
Franklyn said he had also
advised prison officers to “go up there and speak the truth”.
The investigation comes shortly after head of the Prison Officers’ Association, Trevor Browne, was found not guilty by a magistrate of trying to seduce fellow officers from their duty, while the association also successfully fought in court for the right to join a trade union, reversing decades-old legislation which prevented them from doing so.
In addition to the investigation, officials are also looking into the death of inmate Shawn Omar Hinkson, who was serving a 12-month term at the prison but who was discovered dead during Easter weekend last month.

William…..look, did the fowls not give us our business after we said that the houses could be built on the island by LOCAL BUILDERS, faster than they can arrive from China, but no, they were promoting these metal barns, now we hear about all the problems, “2 storms in China, pandemic , absence of Chinese experts, unusual design of the houses, christmas holidays, January’s election” and the list keeps growing ….am sure they forgot a few more excuses, but they will remember them soon….they got 4 or more months to find more…before one house is assembled…if ever..

The confusion and lies have no end. We claim to be training hundreds of youth for the construction boom and then we import steel houses.
We have not yet been capable of repairing houses that were damaged almost ten years ago, but somehow, we are going to be building ten thousand.
We claim to be giving people who “previously did not qualify “ or those from
the lower income bracket “ a chance to own pice of the rock”. The houses cost from the high 100s going all the way toward the high 300s ( thousands) . These liars know full well that nobody working for three or four hundred dollars a week can afford them.
Then , we have to look at the “ new” construction magnets, this administration ,is surreptitiously creating. But that’s another story.
Who are these new players ; what is their connection to certain ministers.. When did they become interested in public housing construction..
All these questions have answers. But the Mottley apologists and enablers feel they fooling somebody.
They ain’t fooling anybody.

What I read that it was people like teachers and police that the will be offered the houses.
The houses will be fitted with PV units and the elétrica fed into the grid. The sale of the energy will help pay for the cost of the houses

I can’t speak about the police. But I can say that while some teachers may end up in these houses, they haven’t been waiting on any of the two administrations to build houses for them.
The whole talk about energy saving is not my issue. Dog houses and skyscrapers, have been building with energy efficiency in mind for at least thirty years. We always order to be late to the party and then behave as if we started it.
Teachers ( BUT) has a very good credit union and I am certain that other teachers and civil servants, have been using the credit unions to secure houses for the better part of forty years.
It’s true that in many instances because of their credit union funds, even with their then modest salaries, they perhaps had to use both banks and credit unions to get homes.
Now, the real issue here is that we are being fooled that some of these houses are going to widen the net of home ownership. That may be so but the lower income earners will not be in that net.
Thisevwho are well ahead in thier mortages, will see acquiring another home as an investment or simply rent out their current home, if already paid for and move into the new more energy efficient digs.
We are going to get a lot of speculators out there but lower income earners will not be in the game. They simply cannot afford it. We need a real effort to house the most vulnerable.
That is the point of my submission. -
