Back to the Budget of a few weeks ago. Many may have missed it, many would have wondered why they were included in a Budget Speech and many are still wondering what is the real story behind black belly sheep making up a budget speech delivery when truth be told they had nothing to do with government revenue or expenditure.

Fenty is Rihanna’s brand and black belly sheep is one of the components of the Barbados brand. Rihanna would never consider devaluing the Fenty brand so everyone should be quite concerned and question why the Government of Barbados wants to devalue the black belly sheep brand.

In a part of her speech, the Prime Minister mentioned quite a few things in relation to black belly sheep that leads to the devaluation of the brand.

  1. She stated that the sheep were to be raised in Guyana and then shipped to Barbados for slaughter. This may not be a good idea as there is no evidence provided that black belly sheep can thrive under the conditions that exist in Guyana.
  2. She mentioned that the black belly sheep will be cross bred with another type of sheep in Guyana. This means that there is some knowledge that the black belly sheep cannot thrive in Guyana. If they could indeed thrive, there would be no need to cross breed to create a hybrid.
  3. One can only presume that this cross breed would be more suited to the environment in Guyana. A cross between a horse and a donkey creates a mule. What will the cross bred be? The soil and vegetation are not the same so therefore, the meat and fat content will not be the same and the quality of the hide will not be the same.
  4. She also mentioned the sale of two types of meat. One of the pure black belly sheep and the other of the cross breed. The pure black belly will be for export and the diluted cross breed for local consumption. Will they be packaged accordingly? How will a consumer know that they are consuming the diluted version and not the authentic brand? Will the taste and texture of the meat be the same?
  5. Have 400 years of slavery damaged us so psychologically that it is still acceptable to be offered food that is less than the best or can we still be forced to eat what the ruling class would never eat?
  6. She mentioned that there would be a price differential. How will Barbadians feel knowing that they may not be able to afford an authentic brand that was created right in their own backyard centuries ago? How will they feel knowing that they are forced to settle for a substitute? Is the meat of the authentic black belly sheep which will be exported for a premium price be too good for Barbadians to consume?
  7. It was not stated that government of itself would be farming the black belly sheep so why was it so quick to come up with the price differentials between the meat of the authentic brand and the diluted product, given that the production cost will be the same?

Two burning questions that remain, are which of the local farmers can afford to start a sheep farm in Guyana and if this venture is only for the select few. One will only know both literally and figuratively if the project gets off the ground and the meat comes to market.

A brand is a unique identity. The government of Barbados should get some help from Rihanna on how to market this authentic brand. Rihanna would never collaborate with anyone to dilute her brand and sell her merchandise at a cheaper price. If that were the case, she would not be a billionaire today. So why is the Government of Barbados destroying the identity of the black belly sheep to promote a cross bred hybrid? Who will be enriched through this venture?

I am all for the creation of an enhanced product but not for a dilution and devaluation of the black belly sheep brand of Barbados. Governments action to alter the breed of the sheep does not offer increased value since it has stated that the cross breed will be sold at a cheaper price.

Livestock rearing is not new to Barbados. Some of the land that will no longer be used to produce sugar cane can be used to rear sheep. Incentives can be offered to small farmers and all of Barbados to raise and produce this product for local consumption and for export while maintaining the authenticity of the brand. Government can also ensure that the real black belly sheep meat is available to all Barbadians by fixing its price per pound on the domestic market.

  1. @William “We get some food stuff.”

    Still int get my food basket. Still waiting. My 2 siblings and little johnnie didn’t get one either, ever though we live in 3 different constituencies, and 3 of our households are 60 and older. And I hear that 85,000 were given out. And I feel [don’t know for sure] that ALL 4 of these households voted B this time. But in truth in my family we are UNRELIABLE voters, so neither B nor D like us.

  2. @David April 10, 2022 7:42 AM “It is usually bought when soup is scheduled on the menu.”

    It makes a lickin’ down good stew too. With some pigeon peas on rice. Or some bonavist. Wuhloss! I have some of those in my freezer right now too.

  3. And really soup should be on the menu at least once per week. Cheap, thick, rich, nutritious, filling. Use whatever peas, ground food, fish or meat is reasonable that week. Pelt in some home grown herbs and an onion and ya gone clear.

    My grandmother, born in 1879 cooked soup [NOT rice, NOT macaroni pie, NOT a whole chicken] every Sunday. Not so long ago soup was Bajan Sunday food. When and why did we move to wheat imported from the great white north, and cheese imported from the far, far south for our Sunday food? My grandma, and her son my father both lived to 90+ and were only sick for 3 months or so for their final going down. Both were mostly doing for themselves past their 90th. Except that my dad, poor fella, could not cook to save his life. His “punishment” for having both a mother and wife [and daughters] who knew their way around a kitchen.

  5. @WARU “was the Black Belly concept originally created on the island or was it imported in the 60s or before or after, i never heard about the original origins.”

    Imagine there is something that our Waruior is NOT an expert on.

    Lolll!!!

    The sheep is not a “concept” like a new variety of t-shirt, jeans or lipstick. It is a living, breathing beastie, and has been around, long, long, long before you were born. Ask the ancestors.

    Lol!!!

  6. Image daily giving Bajans advice and not knowing what a black belly sheep is if one fell on his or her head.

    A reminder the concern raised by Heather:

    “Two burning questions that remain, are which of the local farmers can afford to start a sheep farm in Guyana and if this venture is only for the select few. One will only know both literally and figuratively if the project gets off the ground and the meat comes to market.”

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    There is so much unused land in the Scotland District and much is owned by GOB!!!

    Greenland and Haggatts are huge … atleast by Barbadian stancards.

    In fact the GOB have … or more correctly perhaps, had a livestock station at Greenland..

    Haven’t been walking in that area for a while.

  8. Guyana Black Belly project

    ” According to the President, the vision for the project is first to be “self-sufficient” – supply locally – then move on to supplying regionally, and then onto the international stage.”

    ” Stressing that the project goes beyond just building the farms, he then stipulated that at least 20% of the farms must be led by women and 35% by youths – persons below the age of 35. “

  9. @GP April 10, 2022 8:45 AM “CAUSE DEM SHEEP DOES BREED A FEW TIMES PER YEAR GIVING 2 – 3 LAMBS PER YEAR”

    Nope.

    Giving birth to 2, 3 or even 4 lambs per dropping. And producing 3 or 4 births per year.

    So wonderful fecundity.

    Sheep from the far north and far south typically produce 1 lamb at a time. Black belly sheep only rarely produce one lamb at a time.

    Wait?

    Am I the only person here who has actually raised sheep?

  10. Since we are on livestock, we should also consider milk.

    In this day and age with all the race talk it may be necessary to change the colour of milk as people have stopped drinking it and it maybe because it comes white.

    This was tried in the UK years ago.

    I wonder what colour milk H. A. … and others of his ilk so concerned about race, drink.

  11. Agree with the milk comment. Such a strategy to change behaviours should be included in a communication plan to complement the sin tax measure when the time comes.

    You have to consider that Barbadians have become largely infertile and whatever is causing it may be infecting the sheep.

    Many lambs were raised in our household using a baby’s feeding bottle.

    They became pets after a time, each with a name.

  13. @GP “WHY SHOULD BAJANS BUY BBS MEAT FROM GUYANA WHEN THEY CAN GET CHEAPER LAMB FROM NEW ZEALAND?”

    Taste.

    Some of us like “sweet” food.

    That cannot be refuted.

    Ah lie?

    Rosemary chicken on the menu today. I could have used black pepper, salt and onion, but a little rosemary kicks it up a notch. Ah lie? Sweet potato pie. And maybe spinach and or okras as a side. L’il sorrel to wash it down.

    Sweet.

    Ah lie?

  14. I suspect the strategic partnership with Guyana will allow Ms. Mockley to relocate 80,000 low IQ Bajans there and make space for 80,000 “other” people who not only will raise the IQ of the country, but may also increase the reproductive rate.

  15. Ah the joys of eating black belly lamb stew. I remember going to the Cheapside market and asking for mutton. Only one butcher knew what mutton was. I asked if it was local sheep and he said yes. Boy, it took longer to cook, but my cousins who came to dinner let me know before the meal ended that they taking the remainder. As soon as I arrive I go to that butcher. He does not always have but tells me when to come back. He also cuts good old fashioned pork chops. I guess the black belly sheep will eventually go the way of the sweet for days bajan black pigs raised in villages. I understand some white man from Hingland advised the nuts down there to import white Hinglish pigs. And what do we have, tasteless pigs that are prone to fat. Barbados should be exporting cherry juice, golden apple juice, cane juice, black belly lamb, etc.

    If we do not know where we are,we will never know where we are going. So any road will take us there.
    Is the caption of this article an indication of the issue under discussion?
    What really is the motive for this Black Belly Sheep experiment?

  17. @ Enuff, as usual your are attacking the messenger. All that I wrote was based on what the PM said. Hence, you have the wrong target…
    Based on economics, the production on larger quantities leads to lowering of the price. This does not include diluting the product.
    Perhaps you can tells us the real reason for going so far to create a hybrid. Will the gestation period for these hybrids be different from that of a normal sheep? Do they consume less feed and grass than the black belly sheep? Why can’t the hybrids be produced in Barbados? Why bother to produce hybrids at all?
    I don’t know of any brand that produces a cheap fake alongside its authentic product. That madness would confuse the consumer. You should have a meaningful conversation with Rihanna.

  18. We lost the rights to Barbados Cotton and now the same with BBS? We just sold a company founded in the eighteen hundreds. Mount Gay, BS&T, Geddes Grant , WIBISCO, Robert’s Manufacturing, Sagocor, etc., all sold to Trinidad, Jamaica, US, UK, France etc. Why get excited by Black Belly Sheep? We are a “For Sale” island and people or should I say “Sold”?

  19. GPApril 10, 2022 8:45 AM

    TEK DUNG DIS POST TOO
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Now DUNG is another very useful byproduct of livestock farming.

    If we could convert the amount of DUNG which is often posted here to real DUNG, we could radically increase the fertility of our soils.

    Much of it will be held in the CLOUD so we may have only to discover how to make it mix with the rain and fall on Barbados.

  20. @ Enuff, I wonder if this project will even produce one single authentic black belly sheep. Who knows if the belly will even be black. I wonder if this will be the latest scam. Produce all hybrids in Guyana, sell some on the local market at a lower price and export the rest at a premium price as meat of the authentic black belly sheep. Who would be able to tell the difference as the shipping is from Barbados not Guyana.

  21. @Heather

    What you are suggesting would be not only unethical but contravene various trade laws.

  22. “This was tried in the UK years ago.”

    John probably never watched Candid Camera as a youth who wanted to be white in kingslands plantation and does not get it
    (imagine canned laughter, british humour and racial jokes of 70’s where white people used to laugh thinking it was smart)

  23. ” Farmers in the project are expected to develop the pastures with grass and legumes, while the Guyana Livestock and Development Authority (GLDA) will provide technical and veterinary services.”

    Why can’t the BARBADOS GOVERNMENT do the same for local farmers ?

    same question…was it a concept turned legacy prior to, during or after the 60s….it’s obvious it happened before i was aware and i never heard anything related to who created it or when it started,,,,,….so when i don’t know i ask and don’t pretend i know…so was it or not?

    @ Heather Cole.
    Local meat in general ,chicken,pork ,lamb have all become expensive. Barbadians prefer local fresh meat, So NO. The BBS has not been devalued . It has been revalued over the past 15 years. AND it is still worth the price. For the most part it is grass fed and organic.

    ~~~~~~~
    Rhetorical…?
    Same reason we have not been able to do ANY of the other brilliant ideas and concepts that have been proposed over the years.
    Incompetence!
    But we somehow expect that the Guyanese will use THEIR skills and THIER hard work to ensure that lazy-ass, incompetent Bajans can live big and talk shiite …with endless cheap, good food for us and our families…. Wunna must think that guyanese foolish.
    …just like we expected the Trini bankers to solve all our banking problems when the Bajan Bankers were ‘not good Enuff’.
    …Just like the Canadians were to solve our electricity problems and use THEIR brains, funds and skills to get us cheap rates…
    …and Massy was to make life better by bringing THEIR good management skills and Trini products to OUR benefit..
    Oh gaaawd did I say none of the pure BS should be for local consumption? Will there be a ban on local farmers? Will CA be stopped from raising 2 in her yard? Shiiiiite man!
  35. This is the problem, we operate in extremes. Guyana is stepping up to do what many regionalists have been calling for. Barbados’ track record in the agriculture sector is poor. We cannot continue to do the same thing all the time. It is ironic that Guyana under an Asian President has developed it seems a good relationship with Mottley, an African. It may bode well for addressing entrenched racial division in that country.
  36. It will be constructive if commenters try their best to be reasonable in arguments starting with good comprehension.
  37. @ David
    Everyone should be aware by now the goodly lady is an expert in the art of ‘political hypocrisy,’ of which TheOGazerts gave a perfect description in his April 6, 2022 6:47 AM contribution to another thread:
    “Just the an extension of the TWO FACED SYSTEM where good or bad DEPENDS on WHICH party you SUPPORT. A person can tell you how BENEFICIAL or DETRIMENTAL the SAME ACTION is BASED on the PARTY PROPOSING it.”
    While her “mind is still focused on the poaching of Ross University from a poor sister nation,” which she has been ‘saying’ on BU, ad nauseam, WITHOUT presenting any proof to substantiate her outrageous claim…….
    …… my mind remains focused on how former PM David Thompson addressed the issue relative to the influx of Guyanese into Barbados, by going to Guyana and telling them, ‘ever so welcome, wait for a call,’ which was followed by raids conducted by Immigration and Police Officers, at night clubs, brothels and bars in Nelson Street, Bay Street and Jemmotts Lane and other areas in Bridgetown; on farms, construction sites and everywhere Guyanese lived or congregated….
    …. to ’round up’ and detain them for deportation.
    In other words, Thompson oversaw an operation of ‘mass deportations’ of Guyanese from Barbados.
    The SAME lady came to BU on a daily basis to ‘VOICE’ her SUPPORT for her administration’s actions.
    “How is that for unity?”
    ‘All of uh sudden’ now her ‘party is out of power,’ she wants to wax philosophical’…….
    ……..”Supporting Caribbean unity requires leadership with long term objectives
    Not vision of self interest.”
  38. Cross breeding of sugar cane was done successfully at the cane breed station at groves in st George. It allow Barbados to develop some of the best sugar cane suited for its soils and climate and some of the best sugar / molasses in the world
    @ David Bu at 11:52 AM
    Will you care to reread your intervention as cited above? When did the President of Guyana become an Asian and the PM of Barbados become an African? You just put my comprehension into overdrive. I hope that question does not appear on the 11+ exams .
  40. @Vincent
    You are well aware of the point being made.
  41. So David
    What the Hell is wrong with Mia doing the OBVIOUS thing in the circumstances…?
    NAMELY,
    ..identifying the most competent Bajans in farming – WHO have DEMONSTRATED the ability to be successful, WHO lives in Barbados, Who cares FIRSTLY about Barbados, and who will be here to suffer the consequences should the project fails?
    …and COMMISSION them to come up with a solution and to execute it – independent of the partisan JAs and the Public Service morons.
    Is THAT too obvious a solution for a BBs (brass bowl sheeple – cause even a Black Belly Sheep could figure that one out)
    You KNOW only too well it is because COMPETENT Bajans tend NOT to be political LACKIES like Enuff and ‘Renzo.
    So when Guyana holds elections, and Mia’s friend is in opposition …what do you think will happen to the sheep? …or to the money owed to Barbados in the clearing facility?
    No wonder we are poor…
  42. @Bush Tea
    On what basis of measure a prime minister and government will be able to do such a thing given our track record in the agriculture sector? A sector Guyana has shown it is demonstrably better at performing?
  43. Most bajan cannot afford the pure bred Fenty brand would settle for a cheaper version that their pocket can afford or do without / get a different brand
    It’s quite obvious something must be done, things cannot remain the same, small islands cannot stand alone in the best of times with small shocks, this current end game is monumental, so unity is essential…,,,but, .in saying, they must all be watched and monitored for ulterior motives….small mentalities create avenues for destruction even when there is no need…
    Bushman….the BRICS say they are marching toward financial independence….it’s worth keeping an eye on this situation to see what falls out and on whom…
    “Sanctions push BRICS states towards closer ties – Moscow
    Ukraine-related Western sanctions are pushing BRICS countries into closer economic cooperation at an accelerated pace, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said on Saturday during the first meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors of the BRICS countries, chaired by China.
    According to the finance minister, the “current crisis is man-made,” and the BRICS member states – Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa – “have all the necessary tools to mitigate its consequences for their respective economies and the global economy on a broader scale.”
    Siluanov says the current US dollar-based international financial system should be reformed to ensure “independence and continuity of economic processes.””
    Regarding food security there is the urgency of yesterday, time does not allow for experimenting or piloting of such a project.
  47. Are you not missing the point David?
    No one in their right mind disagrees with the concept of regional partnership.
    BUT, like charity, it has to BEGIN at home.
    You CANNOT develop successful partnerships with far-away strangers if you are UNABLE to build bridges at home.
    So STEP number one is for us to RAISE OUR FARMING GAME, and then to work with Guyana at that level.
    How the Hell do you ignore people like Lowdown etc here, and send jokers to work with agricultural high-flyers like the Guyanese…. What results would you expect?
    You would send Enuff to play Draughts agains Sukie as your perresentative..?
    …not stinking Bushie… LOL
