In this part of the world there is the misconception by many that because we are located thousands of miles from Russia and the Ukraine, we will be unaffected by events unfolding. This is far from the truth given the interdependence of the global economy and how unrest fueled by war and rumours of war will further disrupt supply chains and cause volatility in financial markets. Also important is how East West tensions may erase the gains achieved at détente since the Cold War period.

Whether we believe Putin is a warmonger given his paideia that the attempt by former Soviet Union States – now sovereign states – pose a threat to Mother Russia because of potential membership in NATO, fear of growing democracies on Russia’s border or how it may influence the totalitarian system practiced by Russia – these are not exhaustive concerns, these are legitimate concerns.

What we know if Newton’s third law is loosely applied – “for every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction”. We have awakened to the news of EU and US in discussions to apply unprecedented sanctions on Russia. Russia is no stranger to suffering sanctions from the West. The annexation of Crimea by Russia is well documented. It is being reported Russia has accumulated 600 billions in reserves to mitigate economic sanctions. This will be a long fight with potential significant fallout for the global economy at the current rate of escalation.

So far the other other major economic power in the world has been reluctant to throw the bear to the wolves. Pundits have been opining that China has formed an alliance with Russia which maybe the comfort President of Russia Vladimir Putin needed to pursue his objectives by invading Ukraine.

What is amusing to the blogmaster is to listen to commentators using the sovereignty argument to criticize Putin. Others have invoked violation of UN Charters. Where were the same commentators when the USA and friendlies invaded Iraq on the pretext Saddam Hussein had amassed weapons of mass destruction (WMD)? The blogmaster is not intending to endorse policies of either side in the conflict only to respond to positions being taken based on ignorance.

In this part of the world we have to be concerned if military conflict continues to ramp up. In recent days Minister Kerri Symmonds alluded to an urgency for Barbados to increase local production of crude to 200 a barrels by ‘milking’ old wells. Bare in mind we continue to negotiate a pandemic and Barbados along with other economies in the region – defined as open economies – will buffet with the potential to capsize in a global economic storm.

In the world of geopolitics small islands in the Caribbean have no real voice or influence in the sphere of geopolitics. With the UN Security Council polarized the region must be very careful how we shape a position on the conflict. There is the saying when elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.

But the REAL spin-off to look out for, will be the retribution to be targeted at the state called ‘Israel’ by the many who have been the victims of its bullying with the support of its ally USA…
    +++++++++++
Who is going to strike at Israel? The Israeli PM followed by the Israeli President have all made official trips to the UAE and Bahrain recently. Those countries are stand ins for RSA which is the real maguffy in terms of money and influence in the Middle East. That leaves Iran and are you forgetting that Israel has nuclear weapons while Iran has none!

It appears that you time away was unproductive, so try to keep up

  6. Not a man jack will blame the idiot in the White House for giving Russia the green light to invade Ukraine when he literally gave the go ahead for them to continue the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and bypassing Ukraine. Wunnah would be singing a different tune if Trump was there, you hypocrites.

Sorry Sir Tron, you might just be right on the money the miller has overlooked the coming project of turning Barbados into the Dubai of the Caribbean surrounded by artificial islands and oil rigs to push the target of fossil-free energy by 2030 to 2150 when rising global sea levels would see the total disappearance not only of the artificial islands but also the coral atoll which Mother Nature took millions of years to raise to a level less thousand 1,000 feet from the Atlantic Ocean.

  15. Oil has clipped 100 USD A barrel and all major markets are down. So all that think it doesn’t matter to us think again.

The uk market is our biggest tourist market. If oil climbs well over $100 USD then airfares will climb. The uk government has decided to target all Russian interest in the UK, especially the wealthy oligarchs. Their real estate holding in the UK are around 1.6 billion sterling and so it goes. Some even own English football teams and pump millions of sterling into the UK economy monthly. This money therefore pays many English workers in one form or the other.

The impact of all of this will depend on how far Biden and Boris will take the sanctions. Yes we will have uncertainty in the short term, but none of us with a grain of common sense should think this will not affect us.

Also we need to watch China too and see what road they take. If they cross the line they too will be facing sanctions and hence we will face supply issues and price increases on practically everything we import. Why? Because even the items manufactured in other countries that supply us, contain some percentage of input from the Chinese.

  16. Perhaps we may be seeing a next Afghanistan in the making.

That will be up to China, there is much more at risk here than Ukraine. This we hope will be a confirming of democracy and a final blow to communism. If it goes the other way we are in trouble. The big boys are arm wrestling now Ukraine is just the small middle man.

    FYI

“Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko maintained his hold on power after results published early on Monday (18 November) showed not a single opposition candidate had won a seat in parliamentary elections over the weekend.

Lukashenko has governed the former Soviet country with an iron fist for a quarter of a century and plans to extend his rule beyond next year, announcing on Sunday he would stand in the 2020 presidential election.

The 65-year-old has given more leeway to the opposition and released political prisoners in recent years in a bid to improve ties with the West after rowing with traditional ally Moscow.

But official data on Monday showed, on a 77% turnout, no opposition figure won a seat. At the last election in 2016, two opposition members won seats for the first time in 20 years but neither was allowed to stand again this time around.”

    Poland is not far away!!

Reminds me of the Eastern Front of WWII and the Geopolitics of Hitler and Stalin that lead up to it.

Hitler and Stalin both invaded Poland in 1939, Hitler from the West and Stalin from the East, via Belarus.

This time Putin is going South into the Ukraine towards what was then known as Kiev. Like Belarus, Ukraine was once part of the USSR.

“Belarus,[a] officially the Republic of Belarus,[b] and historically Byelorussia, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Covering an area of 207,600 square kilometres (80,200 sq mi) and with a population of 9.3 million, Belarus is the thirteenth-largest and the twentieth-most populous country in Europe. The country is administratively divided into seven regions. Minsk is the capital and largest city.”

During World War II, military operations devastated Belarus, which lost about a quarter of its population and half of its economic resources.[14] The republic was redeveloped in the post-war years. In 1945, the Byelorussian SSR became a founding member of the United Nations, along with the Soviet Union.

The parliament of the republic proclaimed the sovereignty of Belarus on 27 July 1990, and during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Belarus declared independence on 25 August 1991.[15] Following the adoption of a new constitution in 1994, Alexander Lukashenko was elected Belarus’s first president in the country’s first and only free election post-independence, serving as president ever since.[16] Lukashenko’s government is authoritarian with a poor human rights record due to widespread human rights abuses.[17][18][19][20] Lukashenko has continued a number of Soviet-era policies, such as state ownership of large sections of the economy. Belarus is the only country in Europe officially using the death penalty. In 2000, Belarus and Russia signed a treaty for greater cooperation, forming the Union State.

  28. Both Belarus and Ukraine have or had leaders of the opposition!!

The difference is the Party in Power in Ukraine seemed to be sidling up to NATO and the opposition was in bed with Putin.

We may be watching a bringing together of the USSR as it once was under Stalin.

    UKRAINE ???????

    The Historian Whitewashing Ukraine’s Past
Volodymyr Viatrovych is erasing the country’s racist and bloody history — stripping pogroms and ethnic cleansing from the official archives.

    By Josh Cohen

When it comes to politics and history, an accurate memory can be a dangerous thing.

In Ukraine, as the country struggles with its identity, that’s doubly true. While Ukrainian political parties try to push the country toward Europe or Russia, a young, rising Ukrainian historian named Volodymyr Viatrovych has placed himself at the center of that fight. Advocating a nationalist, revisionist history that glorifies the country’s move to independence — and purges bloody and opportunistic chapters — Viatrovych has attempted to redraft the country’s modern history to whitewash Ukrainian nationalist groups’ involvement in the Holocaust and mass ethnic cleansing of Poles during World War II. And right now, he’s winning.

In May 2015, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a law that mandated the transfer of the country’s complete set of archives, from the “Soviet organs of repression,” such as the KGB and its decedent, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), to a government organization called the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. Run by the young scholar — and charged with “implementation of state policy in the field of restoration and preservation of national memory of the Ukrainian people” — the institute received millions of documents, including information on political dissidents, propaganda campaigns against religion, the activities of Ukrainian nationalist organizations, KGB espionage and counter-espionage activities, and criminal cases connected to the Stalinist purges. Under the archives law, one of four “memory laws” written by Viatrovych, the institute’s anodyne-sounding mandate is merely a cover to present a biased and one-sided view of modern Ukrainian history — and one that could shape the country’s path forward.

The controversy centers on a telling of World War II history that amplifies Soviet crimes and glorifies Ukrainian nationalist fighters while dismissing the vital part they played in ethnic cleansing of Poles and Jews from 1941 to 1945 after the Nazi invasion of the former Soviet Union. Viatrovych’s vision of history instead tells the story of partisan guerrillas who waged a brave battle for Ukrainian independence against overwhelming Soviet power. It also sends a message to those who do not identify with the country’s ethno-nationalist mythmakers — such as the many Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine who still celebrate the heroism of the Red Army during World War II — that they’re on the outside. And more pointedly, scholars now fear that they risk reprisal for not toeing the official line — or calling Viatrovych on his historical distortions. Under Viatrovych’s reign, the country could be headed for a new, and frightening, era of censorship.

Although events of 75 years ago may seem like settled history, they are very much a part of the information war raging between Russia and Ukraine.

This invasion is simply to remove the risk of Ukraine joining NATO from the equation. Since the end of the Cold War, NATO has continued to expand into former Eastern block countries bordering Russia despite assurances they would not and Russia cannot afford to lose Ukraine to NATO. The risk to Russia security is too great.

Ukraine in NATO means two situations can occur overnight
    1) Long range missiles and troops can be placed by NATO right on Russia’s border within striking distance of Russia’s cities. Think Cuba Missile crisis but happening in reverse to Russia.
    2) Ukraine provides access to sea ports which if lost to NATO can have a detrimental effect to Russia’s economy.

At the end of the day, Ukraine does not matter. What matters more is how US responds to this situation. China is watching very closely to see what could possibly happen if they were to annex Taiwan similar to what Russia is doing with Ukraine.

This is what happens when you only get your news from the likes of CNN, MSNBC and other mainstream news outlets that hated Trump when his Make America Great Again policies started to hurt their advertisers’ bottom line. Trump was trying to bring critical manufacturing back home and increase energy production to provide a higher level of resilience and leverage during negotiations with the likes of China and Russia when they behave badly.

Germany cannot say anything harsh against Russia lest Putin turn off the oil pipeline and the Germany people start to freeze since Russia provides them with a significant amount of oil.

Barbados should have banned all the pesticides and herbicides and gone with an only organic agriculture policy years ago. Our high NCDs and cancer rates would plummet overnight, our produce would attract premium prices on the world market as there is an unfilled huge demand for guaranteed pesticide free organic produce by healthy food manufacturers who test all their ingredients for chemicals and currently refuse to use from certain regions because of the prevalence of chemicals in the environment.

what is glaring is that the other misleaders in the parliament KNOW what was distilled in Barbadostoday, using the opportunity of roaming charges, were lies re reparations when the real truth is, it’s UK going after China for buying up the commonwealth, while instituting their own brand of backhanded reparations, in the form of infrastructural development and investments for world stage purposes…

.notice that no one on BU blinked or commented on the dangerous deceit displayed by their LYING beloved misleaders…..exposing that is not important to them, more interested in something OUTSIDE of their control….that has a protracted history from way back in the 8th century, only difference/change is the new year..

and that’s why exposing the basics is fine, but best to sit back and watch the show unfold.

If Biden had not stopped the Keystone pipeline and other oil explorations, he would have had some sort of leverage against Putin since Russia economy is oil based and he would have been able to affect their cash flow making Russia think twice. Biden’s sanctions are a joke.

Just look at how Germany has to keep quiet and block certain actions or their people will freeze.

When will we learn, we have to be able to provide the basics required for our very survival on our own as much as possible instead of always trying to import because it is cheaper now. It might be cheap now but if we permanently lose that ability to produce our essentials for ourselves, sooner or later, the price will no longer be cheap or we may be forced to accept unfavorable terms because we have no local source.
