The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in a surprising result won all 30 seats again in a snap election called 18 months before constitutionally due by Mia Mottley.

In the coming weeks there will be robust debate about how our democracy optimally serves Barbadians with a muted dissenting voice. One may argue a healthy democracy requires a strident dissenting voice. Barbados is traveling an uncharted path given the 2018 and 2022 general election results and BELOW 50% turnout (anecdotal). In the coming weeks our attention will turn to government’s management of COVID 19, the economy, the health of political opposition and a few other key issues.

Whither the political opposition?

The blogmaster congratulates the BLP on the win and offers the advice – to whom much is given, much is expected.

She went further to say that her administration will be an “opposition for ourselves”.

Doesn’t it sound like the definition of a one party state? Go wash your leg, that isn’t rain.

@DAvid….“Successful companies recruit the best their budgets can afford. […] Why are political parties in Barbados unable to recruit the best citizens to serve?”

1.Bajan political parties have over the years recruited top talent…the term ‘the best is relative comparatively ..so being brief off top of head … let’s take a quick look—

Current PM; graduated with excellent academic credentials from the island’s BEST (one of the best if you went HC, Lodge, St.Michael’s, Cawmere .. 🙂 ) secondary schools; then attended top tier British Law School; top lawyer for many years and leader in entertain industry and top captain in other business areas.
Current AG: graduated with excellent academic credentials from (then) one of island’s finest secondary schools; attended and excelled at UWI; was a leader in civic groups and as teenager travelled regionally and internationally as a youth Kiwanian leader; was a District Governor of regional org (as I recall); has ben a leading attorney on island
MP Topping (former) and Hinkson (current): both won UWI scholarships early in career to complement their school years academic success at another top local school; both successful in careers and civic life; Hinkson president of his Lions Group (dont recall if he ascended to post of District Governor).
Bobby Morris (former MP): _Also top student at school then going on to be a history lecturer and top trade unionist. A high achiever in his field locally and internationally.

2.Every one of our PMs and DPMs (most) have been either national scholars or were top academic achievers.

No need to belabor the point David… take a cross section of Bajan society and compare the ratios to our MPs … I expect that there is as good as or slightly better results of the top achievers (academically and otherwise)) in parliament. .. remember we also had some of the best insurance underwriters; best small business operators; medical professionals and of course a bariffle of maguffy lawyers in their too.

I dun wid you and this debate brother… you are swayed by sentiment NOT evidence.

    2025 election news
With the addition of 80,000 immigrants consisting of 60,00 eligble voters, Mia gained a third consecutive (3-year) term.

The black majority population failed to turn up for the elections, but the newly arrived immigrants voted en masse and were the deciding factor in 24 of the 30 constituencies. One ‘native born Brabadian’ was heard to exclaim “man when I went to the polling station, the place was packed with foreigners. I couldn’t get in and I went home”.

Now that the new immigrants have shown their political power, several of them stated that they will be running as candidates in a number of constituencies. In fact, Dubb Streek” a new arrival and dj, was heard to say ‘We can easily win 10 seats on our own and become the dominant party in any coalition.”

My reading of situation is quite simple. It makes no sense ignoring the glaring fact that Mottley has been elevated by the ballot to a political stratosphere that has perhaps only been achieved by Sir. Grantley Adams and Errol Barrow.
We now have to wait and see if this sky high political acclamation will be transformed into meaningful policy that will alter the socio economic landscape of the country. Sir Grantley heralded Adult Suffrage and Barrow independence and free education. While Mottley brought Republic status, it has not resonated like the others because the general consensus is that Republic status had been set in motion by Independence and leaders before her had determined it was on the cards.
Please note this is no endorsement of my view that the Duopoly is decaying and decadent. But, my ideological and philosophical underpinnings, are buttressed by intellectual honesty, I humbly suggest this is the current political challenge that confronts Mottley and the collective Duopoly.
    Peace.

We know you, Kiki, are a person well versed in the repeating vagaries of political history.

Since there is nothing ‘new’ under the Sun don’t you think it is highly probable your star called MAM can go supernova, ‘prematurely’ just like how another DLP rising star, like a comet of great promises, went out too soon in a flame of shame?

If Verla de P. wants to become the second female PM and fulfil a Senatorial dream, then she is advised to stick around the same way MAM went through the fire during her desert years as the deposed LoO during the years of the power-hungry Arthur who, on his return, was even prepared to sell her, like some political slave, to King Freundel the Lord of wholesale fumbling during that glorious decade of political and economic bleeps, blunders and foul-ups which brought Barbados to its knees with the now ‘bad-talking’ Sinckler as the altar boy.

First-time candidate condemns intimidation and vote-buying in electionsArticle by

Voter intimidation, vote-buying and manipulation tactics have been condemned by St James South Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Candidate Dr Ronnie Yearwood, who, from as early as 9:30 a.m. on polling day said he had reason to believe such issues were at play.

“Sometimes people don’t speak about these things, but we should always be concerned about voter intimidation or manipulation or vote-buying and as I said. New politics does not warrant that kind of behaviour and it needs to stop,” Dr Yearwood declared.

“We have to turn over a new leaf and therefore I say to those from that generation and that type of politics, that it is time that they step aside.”

Dr Yearwood, a law lecturer at the University of the West Indies, who was casting his vote at the Alexandra School in St Peter, did not identify what led him to raise the concern.

However, the first-time candidate said vote-buying cheapens the relationship between constituents and their MPs.

“These are always difficult things to prove but there’s an old saying that goes ‘you might not know what an elephant is until you see it, but when you see it you know it’s an elephant’. This is one of the elephants in the room in Barbadian politics and it needs to stop,” said Dr Yearwood.

“If someone pays you a couple hundred dollars for your vote, then there is no respect and dignity in that relationship and that’s not the relationship we intend or that we will build with voters.

“So that when they call and talk to us, we can represent them in real ways. When someone pays for your vote, that’s the end of that contractual relationship. When the voter complains that an MP had not gotten back to them then you understand why,” he added.

The candidate also complained that St James South constituents were being turned away from polling stations because their names were not on the list. In other cases, he claimed people living in the same house were said to be voting in different constituencies.

“It doesn’t make any sense and it just goes to show that the ECB has not done an effective job in ensuring that we had a clean and a proper list and these things affect elections. We should take these things seriously and sometimes I don’t think that we’ve taken these issues as seriously as we should and that’s slightly worrying in terms of our political process,” said Dr Yearwood.

Nevertheless, he thought his chances were good, having run a solid campaign based on the issues affecting the people of St James South, free from ‘gutter politics’ personality-based politics.

    @Dee Word

Successful companies recruit the best their budgets can afford.

Why are political parties in Barbados unable to recruit the best citizens to serve?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Man, are you dumb!!

The parties are businesses who need to give returns to their shareholders.

They owe no loyalty to the people of Barbados.

The citizens who are the candidates are employees and their loyalty is to the party who owe us no loyalty.

When I went to vote yesterday I took the time to read the addresses of each of the four candidates seeking to represent my constituency and by extension me.

Two out of the four did not even live in Christ Church, one lived in St. George and the other in St. Philip.

    I disregarded both of them.

Of the other 2, one lived either in the neighbouring constituency but it could have been mine.

The fourth was a Bee or a Dee and I disregarded him.

I don’t even think he was from my constituency.

The person I voted for I watched on internet and was not at all enthralled by the performance I saw but still voted for that candidate because that person was from near enough to have been in my constituency.

Do you understand how it works?

I took the time to go through the process and it stinks to high heaven.

I’ll explain it in a moment.

“In fact, the former Democratic Labour Party (DLP) leader described the poll which was held 18 months before it was constitutionally due as a “cheap piece of theatre”

don’t know if it’s the pot or the kettle..

  39. In order to become a candidate you have to first pay your $250 deposit.

I did that to initiate the process and become an independent candidate in MY OWN FFING CONSTITUENCY.

Next, you have to find a nominator and seconder from the Constituency you seek to represent.

You also need two people to assent to you representing them.

I made a few calls and the last person I spoke to told me, and I know that person well, “Man John, if I do that I will loose some of my customers. Dum is wicked people and will make sure I suck salt”!!

One person told me “Man John, I have voted every election but I ain’t getting involved in politics this time”.

I realised I was putting people on the spot so I stopped.

I let it be known I would be present at “High Noon” at the Nomination Centre.

Do you see how it works?

The Party employs representatives who they have tested and found loyal and who they want to run as candidates.

Those people could live on Culpeper Island.

The Party finds the four people needed to nominate, second and assent to their employee becoming a candidate.

Those people are no doubt recompensed in some way by the party, they may get work or favours.

The independent is faced with getting four people from a population in his/her constituency who are terrified to go against the parties.

Even the Presiding Officer knows how it works.

He told me “You got till 3:00 pm. Bring them, I will let them through the back door, their names don’t have to be published in the paper because you are only an independent”!!

    I kid you not.

How the (bad word) did the D’s lose 90%+ of the Union support?
    ++++++++++++
Don’t forget that the BWU was a creature of the BLP but to make a long story short after a falling out with BLP leadership Frank Walcott aligned himself with Errol Barrow and the DLP and subsequent General Secretaries of the BWU followed the “Heavy Roller’s” lead. Mia was determined to bring the BWU back into the fold and her efforts were complete with the election of the present GS of the BWU to the H of A as a member of the BLP.

As for the other Unions, during the DLP’s time in office it was at loggerheads with various Unions which I will not recount but if the leadership of those Unions were partial to the BLP it is a foregone conclusion that they will lead the membership to support of the BLP.

BTW wasn’t there a Union that was demanding a hefty increase from the DLP Gov’t which settled for a small increase from the new Gov’t (BLP), what does that say about the leader(s) of that Union?

  45. “@Dee Word
