The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in a surprising result won all 30 seats again in a snap election called 18 months before constitutionally due by Mia Mottley.

In the coming weeks there will be robust debate about how our democracy optimally serves Barbadians with a muted dissenting voice. One may argue a healthy democracy requires a strident dissenting voice. Barbados is traveling an uncharted path given the 2018 and 2022 general election results and BELOW 50% turnout (anecdotal). In the coming weeks our attention will turn to government’s management of COVID 19, the economy, the health of political opposition and a few other key issues.

Whither the political opposition?

The blogmaster congratulates the BLP on the win and offers the advice – to whom much is given, much is expected.

    @ac
I understood fully where you were coming from.
Yet you are a DLP supporter?
So my task to you was….how do you make their promises ‘not empty’. Clearly if they have substance the voters could be lured to vote D?
The objective is to differentiate oneself from “the field”?

  4. Useful statistics
    1. Number of eligible voters
    2. Number of eligible voters who voted
    3. Number of eligible voters who were in isolation. Remember to stop people who should be isolation from voting, a list of names must exist somewhere (polling station??)

Where possible, by constituency and party.

  5. @Dee Word
You are defining best political talent to be a representative on academic qualifications?

  6. Would be interesting to see if in any constituency the votes for DLP+3rd party candidates was larger than the number of votes the BLP candidate received.

  7. @Willian

And where does “any ideological or philosophical persuasion” originate?

  8. @ac

After two 30-0 you continue with the same thinking? Will you never learn?

  9. Relax, the polling data will be released shortly.

  10. 2018 DLP gets a sound whipping.
AC gets a flogging from the day after.
    D’s go into hibernation.

    Is 2022 a repeat?
2022 DLP gets a sound whipping.
AC gets a flogging from the day after. (Thank God there is no D Innis)
    D’s …

    Have a great night.

    @Sarge
    You are correct.
Yet your story is merely confirmation two of the largest unions have ‘left the DLP stables’. My query was ‘how did that happen’?
It is obvious both parties would like their support?
Even more obvious from recent election results, the D’s are wallowing without support of at least one of the ‘big’ unions.
Your example also demonstrates the power of leaders. And how many just ‘follower the leader’. We want XX, but suddenly are happy with Y. That means you only have to get to the leader, the sheep will follow.

  12. Agree the difference between the main two parties is how voters give deference to maximum leader.

“But he believes Caribbean political union is the only way to achieve what we all wish and that the push should now be made to the young people.”

I know that a new Caribbean state is the only true real forward. CARICOM has achieved quite a lot but it’s achievements are not properly disseminated to our youth. In discussions with a dedicated top CARICOM secretariat technocrat, over the last several months, she has explained in depth some very impressive regional governments cooperation in the health and other sectors.
Until we properly market the concept of Caribbean unity to our youth, the effort would continue to look futile.
You would notice that discussions about Caribbean unity in both traditional and the new media seldom gain traction or discussion is never sustained over any period of time.
We seem more concerned discussing “ “high falutin’ global matters that one could follow on foreign media rather than pay attention to those programs and discussion referencing our own issues.
We must keep hope alive for the emergence of a new unified Caribbean State or we will perish economically and culturally.
Thanks for the heads up. Highly appreciated.
    Peace.

There are many, many Caribbean people who immigrate to the island and other islands, once suitably qualified they are given first priority and allowed to live indefinitely across the region on any island of their choice, have a family member now enjoying that progam…but you also know the colonized mind will want to include any number of unsavory and not so unsavory characters from the bigger countries who are nonblack..as said recently.

There is certainly a lot going on..but the islands are too small and insular for young minds to grow and thrive…they need many more options to broaden their horizons, you don’t want the narrow mindedness and refusal to learn that is part of the landscape to continue, as evidenced by some of what we see on the blog, especially with colonial politics being a SOCIAL DISEASE that never wavers and is very, very destructive..

It would pay the islands to come up with many more programs, but not what was CONTRIVED/CONCOCTED and handed to them with a flavor of slavery…the stench that is still stinking up the place.

Theo….people are making progress in that regard..but

you do not want everyone to know what you know

you do not want the new ideas being hijacked and misused to keep the sickness of colonial politics alive because they will never want to shed it especially in it’s current CORRUPT, VOTE BUYING FRAUD STATE….which is working magnificiently for them, only problem, what they have done and are doing is also exposed everywhere,..the world is now thisbig.

    AND

certain information is no longer suitable for BU……ya do not want the blog’s resident STRIFE and CONFUSION maker(s) having access to certain things, let them find out about it on their own and AFTER it unfolds..

have to lessen the info flow….so that people can get on with doing what is most important..

Don’t know why some cannot see that colonial politics is destroying them slowly but surely….and will surely kill them ALL as designed….but that’s on them….gotta save our own families from that scourge on the earth…singularly, everyone is on their own.

all they need to do is sit back and TRY TO REMEMBER how it all started playing out in the last 40 years,, the DEGRADATION is very difficult to miss unless you are too blind and indoctrinated to think in STRAIGHT CLEAR LINES…another problem that they will have to deal with on their own…but the first thing they did was FINANCIALLY and socially REDUCE .the majority population so that there was NO SECURITY in their lives, then they methodically made sure that certain depressed areas COULD NEVER RECOVER……the ones pushed into a corner and used/forced into being the conduit for vote buying purposes….have always been the targets….GENERATIONALLY…..easiest way to start TIEFING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS…..2 generations never even noticed most went to their graves fools for politics and dangerous criminal politicians…

it has become better to DISTILL what they have done and are still doing as opposed to telling them how to fix it……they did it, it’s theirs to fix…certainly not my problem…glad to see how they are everywhere advertising to the world how they held a vote buying election……the fowls and dimmiest wits must be very proud…lol

And where does “any ideological or philosophical persuasion” originate?”

It originates from a deeply held set of core beliefs and how one sees oneself within the broader construct of his or her social and cultural environment. This inevitably transforms into a political persuasion of some sort. Not every one desires to enter politics but those who do will carry those core beliefs , now called ideologies and philosophies into their political outlook. They will find others who share similar outlooks. Once those entering politics do not have any deeply held core beliefs : ideologies , philosophies; they end up with exactly what we have today . We have an essentially non coherent group of political scoundrels whose only ambition is to walk up the steps of parliament and feed at the trough. Unfortunately, with such empty vessels in charge of our political destiny the garbage in and garbage out is what we have.
That’s why we conclude there is no difference between the parties. There really cannot be because there is nothing to differentiate.
Now, some may say that is consistent with global trends and so on. But that is a cop out that allows them to bury their heads in the sand by refusing to look at their own reality.
So, we just had an election and voter apathy is clearly evident. The masses have already determined that it really makes no difference or sense voting. The reason they don’t is simply because there is nothing different to vote for. We are living in a barren ideological and philosophical political landscape . That’s why an election can be called for no real reason and conducted for three weeks on nothingness outside of a contrived personality differences between the candidates and their leaders.
There is a rather different way of expressing what I have written here but I don’t particularly like using cuss words in this forum.
Quite frankly we are in a state of political bs.
But as always, it’s so all over the world. We really have nothing to worry about.
    Peace.

I am black and make no apology for being black.

    Just show me where
    (1) I said backs were lazy and
    (2) I was negative about a next race.

I see people here having a difference of opinion but it is often about what is said. Making up stuff and putting it in the lobby is going to extremes and dishonest.

It will take more than that to silence me.

  28. Last/last
Reposting, so that you can show me where I said blacks were lazy and attack a race.

    “2025 election news
With the addition of 80,000 immigrants consisting of 60,00 eligble voters, Mia gained a third consecutive (3-year) term.

The black majority population failed to turn up for the elections, but the newly arrived immigrants voted en masse and were the deciding factor in 24 of the 30 constituencies. One ‘native born Barbadian’ was heard to exclaim “man when I went to the polling station, the place was packed with foreigners. I couldn’t get in and I went home”.

Now that the new immigrants have shown their political power, several of them stated that they will be running as candidates in a number of constituencies. In fact, Dubb Streek” a new arrival and dj, was heard to say ‘We can easily win 10 seats on our own and become the dominant party in any coalition.”

Assuming that the 80,000 will not include blacks is the real racism. My question remains… What criteria will this 80,000 satisfy that you feel blacks will be unable to meet?

could not have written the script that precisely myself.

William, TLSN, Theo there is definitely hope, where it seemed there was none before…ya can take that to the bank..it’s worth its weight in gold standard.

  30. Imaginary or Real??
There is an expression ” You never miss the water until the well run dry”.

We often describe ourselves as a people without economic power. What power we have lies in our numbers at the polls. Some may say that we do not exercise that power or that we often fail to use it wisely,

Initially, the 80,000 immigrants will consist mainly of adults of working age. It would be folly to believe that 80,000 people will come to prop up an economy and not want to vote on how it is managed.

Such a large influx of immigrant voters would create changes at even the constituency level. A few thousand here and there would have an impact on the outcome of our elections. The political power that we take for granted would be diluted. There goes the water.

    Note:
    (1) I have not said that they should not have the right to vote
    (2) I have no idea if what the race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation would be. The impact on our small voting population is independent of those factors.

    Think about it for yourself.

he is right, this young dynamic woman was thrown into the trenches at an incredibly young age and SURVIVED….with a powerfully intact mind, there is nothing that she will see as a challenge she cannot overcome..

“Such a large influx of immigrant voters would create changes at even the constituency level. A few thousand here and there would have an impact on the outcome of our elections. The political power that we take for granted would be diluted. There goes the water.”

people with powerful minds, will NEVER TOLERATE halfassed backward politics, they certainly will NEVER allow themselves to be PUSHED INTO POVERTY to promote or support vote buying politicians….there will be an IMMEDIATE END TO THAT or there will be consequences never seen before on the little island….there will be significant changes to what now obtains….including the UNSEATING of all these frauds, to make way for hopefully cleaner leadership…and even better….white and other transplants will IMMEDIATELY look for a way to TAKE POWER THEMSELVES…to run the island how they know it will benefit them the most…

Don’t know who created these stats, but it’s in line with what others have been saying for the last 24 hours..

“What is interesting about the election is that only 41 % of the eligible population voted. 59 % kept their X. What was startling to me is that only 29% of those eligible to vote cast their vote for the BLP, which in essence meant even though they won 30 love. 71 % of the eligible population did not vote for them. This is an interesting statistic. Makes you wonder how popular the government really is. Politics in Barbados at the crossroads. ALL parties should take notice of this stat”

btw..is see all i posted above as a good thing, Black majority have allowed themselves to be abused and misused for half century without FIGHTING BACK, continuing the go nowhere docility…now it’s clear they will be unceremoniously pushed aside if they allow it without removing themselves and elevate to GREATER, to make way for a population explosion….this will force them to make informed decisions to survive…and get away from deceitful politicians..

  36. William,

WURA posted an interview of a young lady named Kristle Howell, very impressive combination of logical, ordered mind as an auditor and yet a creative mind, evidenced by her substantial artistic endeavours.

Very dynamic! Not superficially flashy but appealing because of her substance. Don’t know her views on Caribbean political unity but it might be useful to find out.

She is earnestly concerned about our political woes and how they lead to our economic woes especially as they affect the dispossessed. She has the philosophy you seek. She understand that lifting them up would lift us all up.

She is articulate and unafraid. Clear-minded, disciplined and solutions oriented.

This is the second time I have seen her and felt that she could be very useful as a leader of the young.

    Worth contacting as well.

If you did not see the video, ask WURA to repost.

Time to take your endeavour to the next level!

  41. William,

How could I forget? Her bug bear is our educational system.

    Clear as Krystle, William!

There is an impressive African-American academic named Britney Something I cannot remember, but I will see her again on MSNBC. She has written a book that shows that giving the marginalised their due actually increases the economic pie so that it actually increases the size of everybody’s slice. People are stuck fighting each other for a bigger slice of the same pie rather than focussing on increasing the size of the pie and so if you can change that mindset that would be a huge leap forward for the Caribbean people.

It could be translated into the broader Caribbean context of insularity.

I firmly believe that we in the Caribbean have what it takes if we pool our resourses in a non-insular way.

I have heard or read about it Kristle Howard. There are literally hundreds of thousands of young people throughout the region and in the Diaspora waiting , searching and who want some interaction but they simply can’t find it or have no guidance.
We are simply not thinking. Imagine we want a new wave of investors. There are dozens of second and third generation Caribbean entrepreneurs who are quite wealthy , who will like to be welcomed to invest but do we seek them out and really extend a red carpet welcome. Of course we do not.
They still feel second class in the USA and elsewhere but we don’t go after them. We prefer to stuff embassies and semi diplomatic offices with political lackeys, who cannot sell shit or even work a room.
Sorry to say but until we get away from personalities and drinking the same cold soup nothing seismic would happen.
There are billions of dollars that we can easily access but ……….. it’s really pathetic.

@David et al , good morning … its ‘earlyish’ in the day but late enough in these discourses … very late, actually, so excuse any abruptness!

You are obviously being provocative with “@Dee Word .. you are defining best political talent to be a representative with academic qualifications?” despite my CLEAR details on the excellence of several of our MPs in civic life, and matched against others generally regionally and internationally where they also excelled!

Undoubtedly as we see here daily excellent academic credentials are an indicator of certain abilities that can help develop awesome talents but in itself if misused it’s doesn’t make a great leader … but it also shows how the natural aptitude is used to be out front!

Let me see if I can twist this the other way for you … talent is a natural aptitude, skill or ability to do something well, not so …. and ‘oh she’s talented’ colloquially means being better than your peers at a given time (or in this Mia case, ALL the time).

Tell me bro, aren’t most of the folks in parliament showing their natural aptitude to screw us and doing it absolutely better than their peers.

This is a tired debate. I dun wid that good sir.
