Eye still on Covid numbers

Government will not be rushing to fully reopen the country.
That is the message from Minister of Health The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic, who says the business community must temper its expectations for a full reopening of the Barbados economy in the short term.
At the same time, he disclosed that his ministry was prepared to recommend the return of some level of face-to-face classes early in the new year.
Slow growth
On Monday, the Social Partnership group monitoring Government’s economic recovery programme said it wanted to see a full reopening of the economy, including the entertainment sector. It was concerned about Barbados’ slow rate of economic growth and its negative impact on the country’s ability to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response to those calls, Bostic told the Weekend Nation
that while the number of COVID-19 positive cases was trending down, some work on the ground still needed to be completed to determine why the numbers coming forward for testing had fallen so dramatically.
He said although the importance of reopening the economy was not lost on Government, it was a process he was not prepared to rush.
“The Ministry of Health is not in a position to make this recommendation at this time because we do not think that it is fully advisable. It is a desire, and we are hoping that we can get there as soon as possible because it would be really good for the country, but we are not prepared to do that fully as yet,” Bostic said.
“Ideally, we would like to see the numbers come back down to where they were before [pre-Delta], but we know that this may take a bit longer, but one of the major issues for us is to ensure we are capturing the significant portion of the positive cases. We have been doing a bit of work to determine if it is a question of people not coming forward to be tested, because you would recognise that there has been a significant drop in testing.
“It is believed that as the numbers drop, so too would the number of exposures, but we want to be certain because you don’t want to drop your guard while there
are still things lingering within the community that will cause us problems,” he added.
Last week Thursday during a press briefing, Chief Medical Officer The Most Honourable Dr Kenneth George said Barbados was in a much better position than a month ago, and as infections dropped and the spread of the virus eased, the amount of contact tracing and testing by Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory would also come down, which had already been seen.
Bostic said the emergence of the Omicron variant had also thrown another spanner in the works.
‘Too early’
“We still have to keep an eye on the Omicron variant, even though there has been some encouraging information coming forward, but it is still a little too early to open up, so we will not support a full reopening at all. There is no doubt that we have had some decline in the number of positive cases, all of the numbers are trending downwards, but we still have a way to go for us to be certain as to what is actually going on out there.
“We are encouraged, but we do not believe we are at the point yet where we would want to make a recommendation such as that. Definitely, we will want to gather more information with regards to the new variant,” he said.
Bostic said his ministry had stood down some of the schools being used as isolation centres, only holding on to them as a precautionary measure.
“We have not yet handed back over the schools to the Ministry of Education because we are still in an observation mode, but we have been in consultation with the ministry, and we have one more meeting to go. It is our recommendation and hope that we can return to some face-to-face classes very early in the new year, but obviously the final decision rests with the Ministry of Education.”Source: Nation

Ethical disclaimer: Of course, we need to protect those for whom the vaccine does not work due to acute cancer, among other things. So “unvaccinated” is a simplification.

Not much of a connoisseur so I can’t tell the difference between the 12-year Appleton and the 8 year but the 12 year was brought from JA by my wife’s nephew who visited there last year. As for the other stuff I have a few bottles of the “cheaper” 1703 XO as well as one labelled “Black Barrel” and the aforementioned “Silver”. All of these came direct from BimWhen I go to the LCBO I normally buy red wine as I am partial to the information that they promote good health and they make for more interesting conversation during meals, plus I got caught up with the Beaujolais Nouveau fad some years back and never looked back

Things are picking up but we are not near to pre covid levels yet. The main areas suffering are still hospitality based operations like restaurants etc. Much of the none essential items are still under pressure also, such as clothing and jewellery along with other items one can give a pass too. Added to this there is a serious supply issue going on with many businesses not sure if stock will even get here and cleared by Xmas. So they are signs of recovery in some areas, but others are under pressure for many reasons including unavailability of products from international distributors.

At the moment South Africa is in the height of its summer.
The coldest month is June so it is hot out that side now, unlike Canada.

Guess what idiot, both of these doctors are completely right. You are clearly not a doctor, and little knowledge or experience in prescribing medicine.
There are thus, it seems, two other doctors somewhere, who actually know what they are doing, what they should do, and it seems what should be done.
Hurray, these doctors are absolutely right.
I have been doing exactly as they have suggested and with very good success.
Several of my colleagues are doing the same in different parts of the world with great results also.
