The Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2  started in late 2019 and quickly spread to become a pandemic the following year. Based on the current state of global response to the pandemic, there is anticipation SARS-CoV-2 will join the family of coronaviruses to become endemic- like the flu. We will have to finalize an effective method to coexist and carryon with our lifes to protect our economic and mental well being.

Earlier this month newly appointed Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw indicated the ministry is working on a roadmap to ensure at least 70% of students and teachers are fully vaccinated or a system of robust testing as a prerequisite for class room teaching. She further reported about 9,000 of the 21,000 student population were vaccinated, however the vaccination status of teachers is unknown.

The concern of the blogmaster is about how online teaching is negatively effecting our children, especially at primary level. What is the fallout for children who are ‘wired’ to learn with different learning styles i.e. visual, auditory, kinetic to optimally learn. What will be the impact to the quality of a future Barbados society?

The challenge for education authorities is to efficiently weigh the risk of online instruction compared to class room learning of our children during the pandemic and implement relevant plans to mitigate fallout. There is no perfect plan but we must execute the best plans given what is at stake. The speed at which the Covid 19 vaccine is being administered and the challenges caused by the surge of infections  (see current Covid 19 graphs attached) suggest the current approach of blended learning will have to be the preferred approach into 2022.

The predicament we find ourselves throws out a view to which the blogmaster is sympathetic- should the country suspend the requirement of the 11+ exam,  one example- until we implement an effective remedial syllabus to cater to children being left behind? We must not forget that pre Covid 19 government agreed to address fault lines in the education system.

Having sunk billions in the education system since 1966, we must be capable of having an informed and dispassionate discourse regarding next steps to deliver a quality education to the youth cohort AND importantly EXECUTE the plan to address concerns.

Attached are graphs for week ending 22nd October 2021. The increases are very alarming but it should be noted that the last 2 days’ increases were predominantly from 2 large shut-in clusters in the Black Rock area. Nevertheless, it appears that we are now at the eye-wall of the outbreak. The contact and trace authorities appear to be on the ball. We all should do our individual best to protect each other and thereby quicken eventual control of the epidemic – Lyall Small

    As I said before, the so-called safe zones are a dishonest ploy to encourage more people to get vaccinated. They obviously cannot end transmission. They are a great mistake. They confuse the issue and create more distrust of this government.

    The Government has obviously abandoned the idea of protecting Bajans from infected tourists.

    No child has died besides the little girl. Forcing vaccination of the children at this stage would be another mistake.

    And finally, those with certain co-morbidities are vulnerable and we should expect to lose some of them.

    I think this Government is now flailing about wildly. No sense can be made of its recent actions.

    Instant red flags here.

    1) vaccines work due the process of acquired immunity. i.e. depending on the virus, on FIRST exposure the body builds up a defense and memorizes the virus so on SECOND and SUBSEQUENT exposure to the VIRULENT virus, it mounts a faster and heighten response i.e. the so called natural (acquired) immunity. The “problem” is that the virus may be too virulent to mount a significant response fast enough on the first exposure. The worst case scenario then is usually death. the next scenario is (probably irreparable) damage to organs. The typical reactions range from the asymptomatic to fever and other symptoms that may require hospitalization
    All of these scenarios have been observed in COVID-19 cases.

    Vaccines work by FIRST exposing the body to a NON VIRULENT version of the virus (attenuated vaccines) or just the RELEVANT PART of that virus( RNA, viral vector, subunit vaccines). for the body to build up this acquired immunity
    So to assume vaccines have this long lasting effect on the body WORSE THAN or SEPARATE FROM of the virulent virus it self is an IRRATIONAL CONCEPT especially if the vaccines went through Phase III trials. One typical reaction to the vaccines is a person developing flu like symptoms as it is a deliberate infection of a non virulent virus/pathogen . In rare cases a person may develop unusual or heighten immune system reactions WHICH HAVE ALSO BEEN OBSERVED IN ACTUAL COVID-19 CASES.

    2) There is recognition that immunity wanes after 6 – 8 months for the current COVID-19 vaccines i.e. further support that the vaccines DO NOT have this long lasting deleterious effect

    3) vaccines may contain trace amounts of chemicals that may be poisonous in significantly higher amounts or MAY cause anaphylaxis. This is no worse than the “poisonous” effect of over the counter medication that is taken far more regularly than a vaccine as the liver and kidneys work to eliminate these drugs/chemicals from the body

    The typical worst that happens with vaccines is that the immunity is not acquired usually because the immune system is too weak. I would think that that is no worse than that same person being exposed to the actual virulent virus and dying form it. This is the main reason for the deaths among the fully vaccinated. A vaccine cannot replace the entire immune system nor does it damage it.

    @Donna if you read the document provided by DavidBU ( David October 24, 2021 2:28 PM) i think it is providing a reasonable framework for unvaccinated staff to function in the safe zones.

    Also mandatory vaccination of school going children is far from unusual. In light of how contagious the Delta variant is I think mandatory vaccination is an absolute necessity in a school environment.

    Covid understanding in layman’s term is a matter of distinguishing information and misinformation from the universe of news output.

    People don’t trust Government and media since Weapons of Mass Destruction lies by Colin Powell and Blair which they conveniently blamed on faulty intelligence reports they commissioned for their desired outcome to justify an illegal war when nobody believed them and everybody knew they were lying.

    Scientists who invented vaccines say Delta mutation is a natural evolution although there is not much scope for further evolution based on analysis Covid DNA sequence.

    When I look at the vaccination curve, it could come to a standstill at around 60 per cent. That is far too little.

    So we will have to live permanently with many dead and seriously ill people and economic disadvantages because our population is so mentally backward like the Southern States of the USA, Romania or Russia.

    As in the 1980s with HIV/AIDS, it is not our government that is to blame for this, but certain cultural peculiarities that manifest themselves to this day in an abnormally high rate of HIV among native men.

    My child would be vaccinated voluntarily. I am against the vaccine mandate AT THIS TIME AND IN THIS CONTENTIOUS CLIMATE. I think it will do more harm than good.

    But talk wuh yuh like, “safe zones” is a misnomer. The ONLY WAY there could be a safe zone is if people are idolated and tested for a couple of weeks and if negative, enter into a bubble. Once they come out of that bubble and go back in the SAFETY IS GONE!

    THERE IS NO GETTING AROUND THAT!

    It is so illogical that even the biggest idiot can see through it.

    The concept is an attempt at coersion.

    My problem is that it is transparent to those who are already resistant. It will therefore give rise to further crazy conspiracy theories.

    The system allows- if the blogmaster understands correctly- for people to be tested if they do not want to be vaccinated. In addition, before the pandemic there was a huge distrust i.e. apathy and cynicism between the people and politicians. It will take a catastrophic transformation to address this situation, and it is a global problem. In the mean time, we are in a pandemic wrecking havoc to our households economically and mentally. What should we do in the short term?

    It is only the jackass Covidiots running interference on the vaccines that are doing the most harm. The Antivaxxers are doing the same thing in the USA, the result is the biggest measles outbreak in decades. Think about it, a “First World” country having an outbreak of a virus vastly brought under control globally because these antivaxxers have a platform to spout their NON-SCIENTIFIC CRAP. These antivaxxers are just as ignorant and dangerous as the Trump BIG LIE conspiracy theorists.

    When you absorb the science, viable vaccines cannot pose a greater danger than being exposed to the virus it self. It isn’t only about preventing deaths. It is also about preventing the cumulative effects of hospitalizations, sick-leave on the health care system, the economy and the society by extension. Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Polio, whooping cough, smallpox are not overly deadly diseases but they can cause debilitating life long effects. These are the same diseases that are covered by and brought under control by mandatory vaccinations.
    Outside the home, the school is the other place a school-aged children stay the longest. They MAY catch COVID-19 and MAY be asymptomatic but bring it home to parents and grandparents with weaker immune systems and commorbities. I can guarantee you that without a vaccine mandate in schools you will have another source of Delta variant outbreaks.
    The game has changed with the advent of the Delta variant. It was hoped that by now COVID-19 would be on the downward slope as far a being a health emergency. That is not the case. As I and other people have stated already, issues of public health CANNOT be left to the whims and fancies of a population. Govt have to implement measures to prevent Covid-19 from festering as a perpetual health emergency to decisively bring it down in the short term.

    Don’t know anything about these vaccinations and their creators
    But this I know a strong sense of moral fortitude seems to be missing along with truthfulness from the order by which these vaccines were rolled out
    These two components are absolutely necessary to get everyone on board
    The many names attached to endorsing these vaccines have been found immorally guilty of not being truthful in delivering correct and honest message
    On one side WHO dispensing flip flop messages
    While govts dispensing messages which govt feels is correct to run the economy in a Covid environment different days different messages

    Correct sir but forcing vaxxing now to children is not an ideal option. I am ambivalent re vaxxing i.e. family have taken it and I perceive it as a personal CHOICE.

    Thus when I read arguments such as : “[The children] MAY catch COVID-19 and MAY be asymptomatic but bring it home to parents and grandparents […] without a vaccine mandate in schools you will have another source of Delta variant outbreaks.” I see it as defying logic of what we know thus far.

    Simply stated a vaccinated person (adult or child) can still transmit the virus so mandating the vax does not prevent a parent getting it from their child!

    The overall logic which demand enforcement falters badly in many reasoning … so the final determination is more about an appearance of effective action because it seems that the lack of a vaccinate seems as such a callous act (to many).

    It’s a complex issue.
