The Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2  started in late 2019 and quickly spread to become a pandemic the following year. Based on the current state of global response to the pandemic, there is anticipation SARS-CoV-2 will join the family of coronaviruses to become endemic- like the flu. We will have to finalize an effective method to coexist and carryon with our lifes to protect our economic and mental well being.

Earlier this month newly appointed Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw indicated the ministry is working on a roadmap to ensure at least 70% of students and teachers are fully vaccinated or a system of robust testing as a prerequisite for class room teaching. She further reported about 9,000 of the 21,000 student population were vaccinated, however the vaccination status of teachers is unknown.

The concern of the blogmaster is about how online teaching is negatively effecting our children, especially at primary level. What is the fallout for children who are ‘wired’ to learn with different learning styles i.e. visual, auditory, kinetic to optimally learn. What will be the impact to the quality of a future Barbados society?

The challenge for education authorities is to efficiently weigh the risk of online instruction compared to class room learning of our children during the pandemic and implement relevant plans to mitigate fallout. There is no perfect plan but we must execute the best plans given what is at stake. The speed at which the Covid 19 vaccine is being administered and the challenges caused by the surge of infections  (see current Covid 19 graphs attached) suggest the current approach of blended learning will have to be the preferred approach into 2022.

The predicament we find ourselves throws out a view to which the blogmaster is sympathetic- should the country suspend the requirement of the 11+ exam,  one example- until we implement an effective remedial syllabus to cater to children being left behind? We must not forget that pre Covid 19 government agreed to address fault lines in the education system.

Having sunk billions in the education system since 1966, we must be capable of having an informed and dispassionate discourse regarding next steps to deliver a quality education to the youth cohort AND importantly EXECUTE the plan to address concerns.

Attached are graphs for week ending 22nd October 2021. The increases are very alarming but it should be noted that the last 2 days’ increases were predominantly from 2 large shut-in clusters in the Black Rock area. Nevertheless, it appears that we are now at the eye-wall of the outbreak. The contact and trace authorities appear to be on the ball. We all should do our individual best to protect each other and thereby quicken eventual control of the epidemic – Lyall Small

    CONTACT TRACING for people who test positive for COVID-19 will now be limited, with a greater emphasis on notifying patients of their status, triaging and quarantining.
    That is because health officials are “beyond counting clusters”.
    “We are no longer doing contact tracing due to the futility of such in the face of such an expansive outbreak,” Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Anton Best told the DAILY NATION yesterday.
    He noted the highest number of positive cases continued to come from the urban corridor of the island, a consistent feature of the last two waves of the virus, with which health officials continue to grapple to bring under wraps.
    According to the latest COVID-19 statistics released yesterday, there are 788 people in isolation facilities across the island and 4 952 in home isolation. Barbados has had 139 deaths – 61 this month – from the viral illness since the first case was recorded in March 2020.
    “In this massive outbreak of COVID-19, we have close to 6 000 persons in isolation, today. This is a huge burden for the system when compared to previous numbers. Contact tracing is impractical and quite impossible in such circumstances. The polyclinic teams do inform patients of their positive test results (notification) and focus their efforts on triaging to identify ill persons who are flagged as red (urgent), and yellow cases who need to be assessed at an isolation site. Greens are safe and remain
    at home. This process also helps identify other persons in the home of a case and the entire household is quarantined,” he said.
    He added that contact tracing was reserved for select circumstances, health care or residential facilities, and certain businesses and organisations.
    “We are relying heavily on the public to assist with containment activities, and continue to urge exposed persons to quarantine and get tested because we don’t have the capacity to provide individual guidance for every case and every possible primary contact. It is of utmost importance that sick persons get tested and treated early,” he said.
    Best said other systems had been put in place to support the public health response, including the establishment of a logistics and command centre to coordinate and monitor the process; transportation to get those infected to isolation facilities; management by telemedicine; and a dedicated call centre (536-3800) for isolating patients to call should there be a sudden change in their clinical status.
    While he could not provide statistics on the number of patients who had recovered from the Delta variant within the last two months, Best said that strain remained more contagious, with most deaths occurring among the unvaccinated.
    “The Delta strain is more contagious but it may not necessarily be more virulent (deadly). [Those] infected with that variant were more likely to be hospitalised than patients infected with Alpha or the original virus that causes COVID-19, [but] the vast majority of hospitalisation and deaths caused by COVID-19 are in unvaccinated people,” he said.

    With her criticism of the changed entry protocol at GAIA, the BAMP president once again proves to be a loyal supporter of the DLP and a fanatical xenophobe.

    It is not the tourists who are the danger, but our native masses who believe, as they did in the 1980s with HIV/AIDS, that they can fight the Corona virus with garlic and hot showers. It would be far better if our government paid for tourists to have a Corona test before LEAVING Barbados.     Cuba has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world within a very short time, thanks to two of its own vaccines.

    And what do we do??? We have had enough vaccine since August, but our native masses and the BAMP board, in their superstition, are more afraid of vaccination than of the white man.

    It is time to finally put aside the BLM and WOKE blather and the reparations whining of Professor Reckless of the UWI and critically ask if there are any cultural, ethnic or other differences between Cuba and Barbados that explain this drastic difference in vaccination rates.     Covid has touched many countries and has infected millions along with catastrophic deaths
    One does not have to.be a part or live on the homeland not to recognize warning signs and the effect of the COVID on the island all it takes is an observing mind to see what has happened in other countries and make predictions
    What is happening on the homeland is a combination of govt stubbornness to.reinvent the wheel and super imposed policies which have contribute to failures in other countries fighting the virus
    Here we have a govt now putting cart before the horse at a time when covid is rampant on the island in.order to protect the economy
    In the early months of COVID govt had the space by which to use the Covid experience to pursue an economic avenue which would have put money in the economy and put people back to.work
    An avenue which would have placed money in the hands for spending especially benefitting the local market
    However govt pursue the high risk tourist market and evidence of a failed policy is what being shown now resulting in death and infections and a govt having no answers for the economic meltdown and people having a lack of trust in govt policies even in the face of death

    If you are in America with their Covid problems you cannot be in Barbados with their Covid problems The situation on the ground in your area and vicinity means you should observe and criticise the Government where you reside for their issues at the National Level, State Level, County Level and City Level.
    if Covid has got in the system already there is no point banging on about how it got there politically and the primary focus should be on dealing with it medically and heartically.
    Mistakes have been made all over and Lessons are to be learned.

    Local physicians are once again beseeching Government not to alienate them from decisions being made about the COVID-19 pandemic, contending that the apparent lack of input from those on the frontlines is affecting the morale of an already tired professional community.

    On Monday, the president of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) Dr Lynda Williams wrote to high-ranking officials in the Ministry of Health and Wellness demanding answers about the scientific basis for shocking adjustments to the country’s entry protocols.

    “Today I wrote for clarification because I read [the protocols] yesterday like everyone else and just digesting some of the things that would not have been said on Friday, but until I get an answer, I really can’t be sure,” the BAMP President told Barbados TODAY.

    The new measures erase longstanding protocols allowing travellers vaccinated against COVID-19 to forego testing and quarantine, ending protocols,  which for months remained in place and were considered fundamental to managing the importation of new cases into the country.

    On Friday, one day after the new measures were announced, Minister of Health and Wellness Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic, declared that the “real enemy” was the current community spread of COVID-19 as less than one per cent of all positives were imported.

    Dr Williams however explained that while the retention of random testing is somewhat commendable, the crux of Bostic’s argument has “holes” from a scientific perspective.

    “There are holes in that argument…there are issues with that… and it is not a full basis for taking away all testing at the ports and because it isn’t, I am hoping to have a discussion about it,” said Dr Williams.

    “If there is more data that they have, if there is more rationale that I am not aware of, then I am hoping that they can present that to us, but as it stands, I am going with just the very little information that you have, which says that we have community transmission, therefore we don’t need to worry about what is happening at the border,” she added.

    The decision was the second in recent weeks where Government appeared to exclude the medical fraternity in the country’s deadliest wave of the pandemic thus far.

    Weeks ago, Prime Minister Mia Mottley, side-stepped calls from BAMP and other independent healthcare professionals who warned that further restrictions on movement are needed to safeguard dozens of lives as the daily number of COVID cases climbed to unprecedented levels.

    Noting that doctors are both mentally and physically fatigued and in some cases burnt out, Dr Williams said their exclusion from the decisions that may affect them on a day-to-day basis is only adding insult to injury.

    “We are not just pairs of hands on the ground. If we don’t understand what is going on, if you alienate the medical community, it makes people frustrated. It’s always good to have us in the know, but if they don’t think so, there’s nothing I can do about that,” the BAMP president contended.

    @ Tron it totally defies logic. The change in protocols:-

    1) follows the science as it allows FULLY VACCINATED people to enter WITH a negative test. It is in my opinion the baseline control that can be implemented to allow for “unhindered movement”. People are looking for risk elimination controls to a respiratory virus THAT DOES NOT PRATICALLY EXIST!!!! The aim is practical RISK MITIGATION. Why implement a zero tolerance quarantine policy when within Barbados the “dread” associated with the virus has been reduced with a home isolation program. This measure also does not totally eliminate risk of spread but it doesn’t need to be to gradually reduce the spread of this particular virus.

    2) it is the only real PRACTICAL MOVEMENT CONTROL to mitigate COVID-19 spread implemented ANYWHERE in Barbados right now. In other words with no real movement controls within Barbados the worry should be the continued spread in the communities.
