Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2  started in late 2019 and quickly spread to become a pandemic the following year. Based on the current state of global response to the pandemic, there is anticipation SARS-CoV-2 will join the family of coronaviruses to become endemic- like the flu. We will have to finalize an effective method to coexist and carryon with our lifes to protect our economic and mental well being.

Earlier this month newly appointed Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw indicated the ministry is working on a roadmap to ensure at least 70% of students and teachers are fully vaccinated or a system of robust testing as a prerequisite for class room teaching. She further reported about 9,000 of the 21,000 student population were vaccinated, however the vaccination status of teachers is unknown.

The concern of the blogmaster is about how online teaching is negatively effecting our children, especially at primary level. What is the fallout for children who are ‘wired’ to learn with different learning styles i.e. visual, auditory, kinetic to optimally learn. What will be the impact to the quality of a future Barbados society?

The challenge for education authorities is to efficiently weigh the risk of online instruction compared to class room learning of our children during the pandemic and implement relevant plans to mitigate fallout. There is no perfect plan but we must execute the best plans given what is at stake. The speed at which the Covid 19 vaccine is being administered and the challenges caused by the surge of infections  (see current Covid 19 graphs attached) suggest the current approach of blended learning will have to be the preferred approach into 2022.

The predicament we find ourselves throws out a view to which the blogmaster is sympathetic- should the country suspend the requirement of the 11+ exam,  one example- until we implement an effective remedial syllabus to cater to children being left behind? We must not forget that pre Covid 19 government agreed to address fault lines in the education system.

Having sunk billions in the education system since 1966, we must be capable of having an informed and dispassionate discourse regarding next steps to deliver a quality education to the youth cohort AND importantly EXECUTE the plan to address concerns.

Attached are graphs for week ending 22nd October 2021. The increases are very alarming but it should be noted that the last 2 days’ increases were predominantly from 2 large shut-in clusters in the Black Rock area. Nevertheless, it appears that we are now at the eye-wall of the outbreak. The contact and trace authorities appear to be on the ball. We all should do our individual best to protect each other and thereby quicken eventual control of the epidemic – Lyall Small

  1. Is govt going to continue badgering people into taking the vaccine
Is govt going to continue sending out messages of fear
Govt has got to come to an understanding that there are differences in all people which makes individuals unique
Govt must carve out a way of taking fear and compulsory mandates out of this problem and find a model by which all can work together
Every day a PR of doom and gloom would not help but drives fear and instability in the minds of the people those who are vaccinated and those who are not
Govt must get back to the drawing board and by all means bring out messages that are not hardened and stoic
All in all govt must now understand that there is a lot of physchological imbalances that enters the people minds that hardens and will reject policies that are overly demanding
Sometimes it is better to used policies which will cool the water than hammer and nail approach
    Let cooler heads prevail

  4. Children should not have to carry these heavy buckets of fear
Why are schools in Barbados still closed while countries with higher infections and death have found a way to return to classrooms
A classroom setting is where the.children would feel most comfortable at this time
A place where the children can shut out all the fear that is being emitted daily by govt messages and policies
Hard to understand why govt cannot find a comfort zone for the school children
One that is centred around building a classroom setting for the children even if it is a few hours out doors
Years ago outdoor classroom settings were part of the school curriculum

  5. It is reported Barbados will receive 70 dose of Pfizer this week.

FDA backs Pfizer vaccine for five- to 11-year-olds
NEW YORK – Scientists at the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) say that the likely benefits of giving the Pfizer (PFE.N)/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to five- to 11-year-olds clearly outweigh the risks of rare cases of heart inflammation.
The vaccine makers said their shot showed 90.7 per cent efficacy against the coronavirus in a clinical trial of children five to 11 years old.
The details were in briefing documents published ahead of a meeting of a panel of outside experts scheduled to vote on Tuesday whether to recommend the FDA authorise the shots for the young age group.
If the FDA authorises the Pfizer/ BioNTech immunisation for children five to 11 years old, it would be the first COVID-19 vaccine for the age group and shots could be available in the United States in early November.
Both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) vaccines have been linked to rare cases of heart inflammation called myocarditis, especially in young men.
The FDA staff said that, assuming the number of myocarditis cases observed in the younger age group would be similar to that
seen in 12- to 15-year-olds, the number of COVID-19 related hospitalisations prevented would outnumber myocarditis-related hospitalisations in most scenarios analysed.
Sixteen children in the trial who had received a placebo got COVID-19, versus three who were vaccinated, Pfizer said in briefing documents submitted to the FDA.
Because more than twice as many children in the 2 268-participant trial were given the vaccine than placebo, that equates to better than 90 per cent efficacy. (Reuters)

  7. Scary scenario for children parents especially not knowing how the vaccine would longterm affect the child
I for one would not subject my child to a vaccine which can trigger long term heart problems and a life of sustaining drugs and battling a long term health issue
I would rather place my child under supervisions that are sensible which are a combination of protocol healthy eating and outdoor exercises like a couple hours of walks and playtime in the park
Needless to say I would also have to set the examples

  13. All the GOB has to do to eradicate it is to identify the water sources and shut them down during the wet season the same as is normally done with Bowmanston after heavy rainfall when the water becomes turbid with mud from the surface.

Let the virus cease to exist in those sources and stop its spread by water.

The masking, social distancing and sanitizing, even vaccination will then have a chance of working.

  14. The zone 1 areas around 80% of our water sources means the virus can’t get to the pumps so 80% of our water is good.

The time of travel is 200 – 300 days across a zone 1 area and in theat interval of time the virus ceases to exist as it cannot find a host.

This has worked since the early 1960’s when Zoning was first introduced by Tullstrom.

  15. RAND PAUL: If you want people to get vaccinated, try honesty
    KIBBE ON LIBERTY
    BLAZETV STAFFOctober 21, 2021
In this clip, “Kibbe on Liberty” host Matt Kibbe sat down with Sen. Rand Paul and discussed a different approach that might actually result in more at-risk people getting vaccinated. According to Rand, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House chief medical adviser, has been tactical in his dishonest narrative about natural immunity in an effort to get more people vaccinated.

Rand said that Fauci is sharing a noble lie about natural immunity because he is afraid it might deter people. But Rand explained he believes the opposite might be true and he suggested that it’s actually the continual stream of lies that has led so many people not to trust the government. He went on to say that a better way to persuade people to get the shot would be to treat them with honesty.

Kibbe added that people are self-interested, and if they are shown show that the vaccination will help them, they will do it as long as they don’t feel they are being forced or lied to.

    good thoughts.
Covid has ensured a few things

The gap between “knows” and “know nots” will widen
The continued use of technology will put some students and schools at a constant disadvantage
Some students have completely lost their formative years and will never regain them (3-5’s, 10-13’s, 16+’s)
The Ministry’s focus on short sighted education reform instead of mitigating current impacts will come back to haunt us
The prevailing worrying sub-culture will have several new recruits shortly
Upcoming elections will take importance and silly season will leave our children out in the cold
the Minister et. al. will continue to sing a song of “We got it covered” and “all is going pretty well” while those that know better will continue to suck salt.
All teachers/educators able to retire will do so as soon as that date arrives

We can come back in a few years and see if I was right

The best direction. Is to open the schools provided good sanitation
Have a professional nurse and a physchologist on the school ground daily to ask questions from parents and children if needed

    MY 2 cents worth
I believe the return to classroom teaching is more straightforward:-

    1) with the Pfizer vaccine being the first vaccine authorized for school aged children then there has to be a straightforward vaccine mandate as far as students is concerned. I’m using the precedent of vaccination against the other diseases as reason for this mandate. The secondary health measures especially mask wearing will continue in the short \ medium term.

    2) I’m not seeing “robust testing” IN ITSELF as a practical risk mitigation measure in a TYPICAL school environment. It can PROBABLY be applied to teachers and non teaching staff vis a vis a vaccine \ test mandate. However as there is some level of student\ teacher\ non-teaching staff interaction and with a virus with a relatively long incubation period and asymptomatic spread, the vaccine mandate is the stronger (and more practical) risk mitigation measure. Testing must only be SUPPLEMENTAL and used in certain circumstances
I also see COVID-19 as being endemic in the long run so I will endorse such measures ONLY for the duration that COVID-19 is considered a public health emergency. For Barbados if such a mandate can be instituted from November 2021 then classroom teaching can return in January 2022 or (most likely) April 2022.

I believe the blended teaching approach should continue at any rate even if it is just SUPPLEMENTARY to the classroom approach.
    The reasons i have are:-

    1) the technology available makes it more practical and cost effective to do such for the past decade or so.

    2) some children are more comfortable learning outside a classroom setting.

    3) The technology itself may allow for a more engaging experience when it comes to assimilating information

    4) the concept of supplemental classes and additional subjects can be facilitated easier with the technology used in the blended approach. eg classes outside the typical Monday – Friday 8 am – 3 pm times.

    5) In the current circumstances re:- the COVID-19 rate of spread, SOME parents may find it “safer” to have their children away from school environment for part of the week even if they do agree to mandatory vaccinations.

  26. @DLP Propaganda TV

You are essentially asking for the government to declare the education space a safe zone? Is this what Prime Minister Mottley has shared will be rolled out?

  27. @DIsgusting
    1. The (adequate and correct) technology is NOT widely available for students to the degree needed for equity and definitely not what is being touted by the powers that be

Some children are comfortable. Many are not and have not been taught to be (i.e. the haves and have nots)
The engaging experience depends entirely on the teacher who may or may not be equipped or trained sufficiently and who may or may not be monitored and who may or may not understand the shortfalls of online learning.
Totally agreed that the 6 hour school day can be a thing of the past, BUT, we have these strange creatures called Teachers’ Unions which tend to eat, digest and spit out good ideas rather than let them work.
Agreed that some/most children will be safer at home. Parents have to be a part of the discussion

Lastly, clear data is needed to see how many teachers, students and other staff have been vaccinated. This should also be shared. The safe zone concept will soon reach schools but despite sounding good ALL of the challenges to its implementation still remain.

The powers that be NEED to be proactive and forward thinking with respect to student learning and any anticipated negative fallout from where we are. Clichés, talk sessions and fancy animations won’t cut it.

@DavidBU the short answer is yes. I think it should be the first safe zone actually

My query is on the concept of the safe zones. The impression is that these are “areas” where there the EXPECTED MINIMUM will be be vaccination proof or negative test.
So how will these zones be setup? will it be by specific physical location i.e. for specific schools, medical institutions, public sector departments, sporting and cultural venues? Or will it be by economic sector i.e. for major supermarkets and retail outlets, hotels, educational institutions, stadiums, cinemas, public sector?. If it is the latter, then the zones are just another way of setting up a sector wide mandate leading up to a eventual countrywide mandate. I really have no problem with this approach

My general comment is that with virus you are trying to reduce conditions that promote the spread of the virus. i.e. reduce the prolonged patronage of Indoor areas to people that have a lower risk of spreading and catching the virus.
So setting up “zones” is almost an artificial segregation of different indoor areas when the virus does not discriminate as to the indoor areas where it thrives and spreads. In other words if “zones” are setup in this way, you may find reduced spread in those zones but continued spread outside of those zones. To this virus, that does not make sense to me. Knowing the nature of people they may have their “guard up” in the safe zones but “let it down” outside them.

If there is to be a decisive reduction in spread then there should be a mandate across all areas that have the real potential to be hotspots. i.e. across all indoor or partially enclosed areas

In any case since they are promoted by gov’t, I expect schools to being under these safe zones. Schools are (fairly) unique in having hundreds of school aged children already know to not have the mental maturity to make the best decisions all the time interacting for 6 hours a day. This is the ideal situation for a vaccine mandate.
Also in Barbados classroom learning is currently at 0. A vaccine mandate is in my view the safest way to permanently restart school learning in the first instance then when a significant amount of people\children are vaccinated then allow the option of testing.

Govt has got to come to an understanding that there are differences in all people which makes individuals unique.”

After this comment, it is obvious that the DLP is the party of anti-vaccinationists.

This reminds me of the 1980s when Barrow failed miserably in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Didn’t quite a few government politicians then recommend hot showers and garlic to people against HIV? Thanks to this legacy of Barrow, about 2 percent of native men are still HIV positive today.

Thank you Barrow and DLP for caring so much about public health!

  33. @David et al,

    I’ve posted Week 3 analysis: https://www.caribbeansignal.com/2021/10/24/covid-19-vs-barbados-3rd-week-of-october-2021-review/

I’ve noticed something about the dashboard reports over the last few days concerning the write-up on deaths. Between October 18 and 22, there were 9 deaths (according to dashboard data). However, the write-up does not appear to provide any break down on the deaths (i.e., gender, age, et cetera), or mention any deaths for that specific day (however, the total number of deaths to date is mentioned).

Death information appears to be being published separately on the GIS website, but in at least one instance, the numbers do not add up. For example, on the Oct 22 dashboard image, 4 deaths were mentioned, but in the write-up below the dashboard image, there is no break down. A separate GIS post, titled ‘Two More Covid-19 Deaths On October 22,’ and published on Oct 23, conflicts with the Oct 22 dashboard data count of 4.

  35. Points to ponder.

European, North American and others UK kids are mainly unhealthy thanks to their processed cheap foods, easy access to oversized meals.

How come Africa where anti-virals are widespread for malaria only just short of 240,000 deaths are reported?

Brazil high case count was due to refusal by government to enact protocols.

Children need to be protected from adults, thus vaccinated the adults and leave the under 12s alone.

UK have a vaccination rate of over 80%.

Why is UK now reporting the highest infection rate of over 40,000 daily?

Moderna efficacy drops as low as 3% after 5 to 6 months

Pfizer and AstraZeneca efficacy wanes to between 51 to 61% after 6 months.

Is it true the vaccinated can be reinfected and infect others due to low antibodies complimented by high virus load?

How will Safe Zones stop the vaccinated from infecting the vaccinated?

How many children died from Covid-19 in Barbados other than the little girl who was asthmatic?

How will we stop vaccinated UK tourist with Negative PCR who may be carrying the new Delta Variant Plus mutation at an undetectable level from spreading virus to vaccinated hotel workers?

Why would we expect in a population of 278,000 with nearly 50,000 suffering from an NCD not to have at least 1% dying from Covid-19 due to their co-morbities?

Where there is risk there should be choice and the government haste to add Covid-19 to the list of required vaccinations for entry into school is irresponsible, ill conceived, shortsighted and bordering on madness.

Two options are available, take a perpetual vaccine to reduce virus load every 5 to 6 months or stop provide transportation to the virus by strict adherence to protocols and grudgingly protect your personal space.

Can anyone tell parents without doubt that the long term and midterm contraindications of these vaccines will not hamper or endanger the reproductive health of these under 12 kids?

Research is ongoing on why vaccines are messing with the menstrual cycles of women. Oh , I do have a 7 year old daughter.

Let me thank those who bravely took the vaccines for it provides excellent research on short, medium and long term contraindications. Your sacrifice will not be in vain for it helps overtime to produce safer vaccines and build trust.

In case you want to know, I am unvaccinated due to my incredulous nature and never hasty persona.

On BU you get interrogation of information from citizen journalist who sometimes may be political. Tired of the Barbados note taking reporting media hamstrung by bosses singing for their supper

  37. The pace of change in the second year of the pandemic has slowed down. Innovation to retool how we do things seem on pause. Same tourist source markets and no revamping of economy to embrace an E-commerce business in every home earning FX for cottage industries coupled with the necessary export training. Same unsustainable bush cutting employment for disenfranchised youth. Mendicancy still encouraged by GOB if the reactive approach of hoteliers and farmers can be used as measures.

  38. @Kammie Holder

I do indeed check BU (and have been for several years), and local media. Followed BFP as well until they shuttered it. I think that both BU and BFP bring value to the dialog and convo (even when the posts and comments have a political slant).

I am also familiar with the business model of most, if not all, major media outlets (and The Web): it is fundamentally advertising. I run Google Ads on my site (the revenue doesn’t even scratch my monthly web hosting and annual domain costs). I have thought about asking for donations, but haven’t bothered to (as yet).

I know that journalists, in Bim and elsewhere, can only sing at a certain volume, or write/compose music that can only reach certain depths/heights of complexity, or emotional movement (to loud or to deep and their supper is pulled).

Be that as it may, I consider myself a citizen journalist (part time). I spend a great deal of personal time and effort tracking things mostly in this country, as sometimes the region, that are under-reported, or never mentioned, but that need to be highlighted given the impact it has on Barbadian society (murder rates, fuel prices, Covid, fast-food prices).

The World, myself included, are to used to free or heavily subsidized news. Reader supported journalism, especially in the Caribbean, is a wonderful pie-in-the-sky dream. But some dreams do come true.

@DavidBU That is the first time i’m seeing that document. It is basically a vaccination + testing matrix mandate depending on levels exposure to COVID-19. i.e. a fine tuning of a strict vaccination \ testing mandate. The specific testing intervals may have to be tweaked per sector

    @Observing October 24, 2021 11:40 AM
I was really endorsing blended learning regardless of the Covid-19 situation and only to be supplementary i.e. not to totally replacement the classroom. The school \ teacher will still be the main institution \ professional delivering education to students in and outside the actual physical structure of the school
I was stating that the current technology makes it more practical and cost effective to do. The cost of a proper low to mid range android tablet can rival the cost of renting & buying books.
