Recent COVID 19 Dashboards reflect a global picture, one of rising infections caused mainly by the Delta variant. Unfortunately because Barbados does not exist in a fishbowl, our tiny island is being ravaged by the the coronavirus. Given the perilous state of the economy before the pandemic struck, Barbadians should expect a period of economic hardship for the next many years, ten, twenty …it is left to be seen. We will probably be told differently very soon with 2023 rapidly approaching.

It is regrettable the one advantage our island has compared to larger countries we continue to squander. Come together, agree to a way forward , inspire residents to rally behind a sensible plan AND EXECUTE. Instead we see the same old, political opportunism, high class ignorance and panic.

The blogmaster is hopeful this blog can be used to record constructive suggestions to help onlookers negotiate the ongoing Covid 19 challenge, now and in the long-term. To repeat – the blogmaster is hopeful.

One thing is for certain, it is going to be a bleak Christmas.

    On the heels of some hotels insisting on vaccinated guests only, a company is asking others doing business with it to ensure its workers are vaccinated if on the compound.
    Dereck Foster, executive chairman of Automotive Art, said it was protecting its staff from the COVID-19 virus.
    He stressed the policy did not extend to customers, and Automotive Art staff were free to decide whether they wanted to be inoculated or not.
    “From [Friday] if you are a vendor coming into our offices, we need to know that your staff is vaccinated. We decided to take this step because we feel it is important to protect our team members. I don’t know what is going on in various organisations around the country, I can’t control that, but we’re taking this stance because we need to control what is happening in ours when people are coming in. That is the only way as far as I am concerned we are going to get out of this pandemic.
    “Somebody has got to take a stance and we are taking a stance. So if you want to come into our premises and our offices and do business with us, whether it is cleaners, or whoever if it is that they provide services to us, then we want to know you are vaccinated,” Foster said.
    The public debate over business only with the vaccinated resurfaced this week when two Barbados hotels insisted on vaccinated guests only, resulting in a United Kingdom tour company terminating contracts with them.
    Form sent out
    Bougainvillea Hotel on Maxwell Coast Road and its sister hotel Sugar Bay on Hastings Main Road, both in Christ Church, will only be accepting vaccinated guests from December 15, but British tour operator Tradewinds announced its termination of their contracts, saying the policy “promotes medical apartheid”.
    Yesterday, Foster told the Weekend Nation a form had been sent out to all the vendors to show their staff members were vaccinated and, if necessary, to go to the extent of them showing certificates.
    He said that so far “quite a few” companies had responded saying they were delighted their staff were fully vaccinated.
    “So they have to sign a form saying so and some
    of them have said we have some of our staff that are vaccinated, so we will only send those to you. I just want it to be clear that . . . this policy does not affect our staff and it does not affect our customers. This policy is exclusively for our vendors sending people into our office,” he stated.
    Foster said the majority of the company’s staff were vaccinated.
    “We understand people’s right to choose and that is absolutely your right to choose and we don’t intend to infringe on those rights, but we can choose who we want to do business with. I can’t ask customers to produce vaccine certificates – that would be unreasonable because we are only now getting enough vaccines – but we can ask vendors.”
    He explained that there were some who believed companies should not take a stance but someone had to lead.
    “The only way we getting out of this is to be fully vaccinated or for everybody to get COVID-19, those are the two choices . . . . the only two ways for us to get herd immunity. I live in a democracy and I don’t want that to change,” he said. ( AC)

    Covid fatigue has set in, we are in survival mode, either UNIFY to survive or anything can play going forward. Forget the slave system, the dirty go nowwhere politics and the tiefing players, particularly the lying government, put pressure on them….they never had any solutions in 55 YEARS in the best of times….and never will……look after the BLACK/AFRICAN FAMILY instead.

    Barbados is a fish bowl or a cruise ship where a bug can spread quick.
    Somoa has had 3 cases and 3 recoveries (0 deaths) but had strict lockdown where people were only allowed out once a week to shop and flights were suspended.

    The problem with Covid is it affects families.
    I know a family with 5 children who recently caught Covid which affected all of them but hit the father bad who had received 2 doses of vaccine and also one 4 year old girl who is an identical twin (and always with her sister with similar/same DNA code) who was hospitalised in ICU in a serious condition and given steroids treatment and will need to be put on a drug treatment.
    Children can suffer from long term Covid which affects their lungs, but their growing bodies can heal and slowly recover from the damage.

    The video posted above is instructive. Everyone should take 10 minutes and let the message shape the discussion. It is recommended to get the vaccine but because heard immunity is not achievable according to the developer at Oxford we need to stop mass testing and identify treatments.

    In times of crises and national disruption, politics is not the answer. There are no inspirational leaders in any sector and that includes the political class.
    We have been fed a diet of useless cliches and political BS. The reality that we appear rudderless is now sinking in and the apologists are incapable of defending anything these days. And that is the real tragedy.
    They knew better but were only interested in narrow political objectives.
    They were told that one cannot plant okra and reap corn.
    They had a big party for over fifty years. We all know that after the party is over somebody has to clean up the mess.
    It takes a whole lot of effort or the roaches and flies will take over…..,,….,,,,,

    Where’s the message of hope? The people need it
    Today’s Editorial
    Two weeks ago, VOB 92.9 FM’s Down to Brasstacks moderator Dennis Johnson pointed out that while governments across the region and the world had done their part in managing the pandemic, what was strikingly missing was a “message of hope”.
    The moderator was concerned, as are we, that while much attention is being paid to the narrative of doom and gloom, a message of hope was desperately needed.
    If indeed there is a message of hope, it needs to be amplified.
    What we are faced with now is an apparently financially driven business community that continues to lament the economy; workers who lament that their rights are being eroded; the unions lament shady and unscrupulous employment contracts; while Government laments limited resources to tackle effectively all the challenges we now face.
    It is as if each day we seem to be bombarded with a heavy diet of confusion, despair, and hopelessness.
    Even if that is not the intention, that is how it seems. One would have thought especially with the number of suicides our country has recorded this year among young people, someone somewhere would interpret that as a clear indication that hope is needed.
    The reality is what it is. As a media house, we will never say ignore the facts, but facts can have a different effect depending on how they are presented. Take for instance the fact that we recently recorded over 5000 COVID-19 cases. While that is a major cause for concern, the reality and fact still remain that well over 4,000 people recovered. Sadly, the virus has been fatal for 51.
    But we cannot keep hammering away at that fact. Daily, the number of cases is rising. As of Thursday, the Ministry of Health reported 80 new cases for Wednesday taking the number of people in isolation to 413.
    It becomes so easy to gravitate towards negativity. It would appear that so many are consumed by the pandemic and its uncertainty that the positivity seems to be fading.
    Our people need a message of hope. A message to reaffirm our greatness as a nation and our ability to overcome. Our people need a message of hope that unifies and not divides. There is so much that presently divides us and sets us apart. The message of hope is needed at a time when many social ills confront us: the high and rising cost of living, a challenged educational system, crime, domestic issues, and the list goes on.
    We often say that every dark cloud has a silver lining yet during this pandemic it seems so difficult for us to find and highlight that silver lining. But we have to.
    This generation and future generations of strong and brave Barbadians are depending on us to embrace and propel that message of hope. We have to make it if not for ourselves, for those looking on seeking guidance.
    We often hear that we must look back in order to chart the course forward. History has taught us that at every juncture, with all that our country has faced, we have had messages or messengers of hope who were there to lead and inspire us through. These messengers didn’t always come in the form of spiritual leaders or even politicians.
    Some were union leaders who were needed at the time as is the case of the 1937 riots.
    Some were ordinary people who used their will, might and determination to inspire as is the case with Bussa.
    In other instances, some were unsung heroes who continue to be nameless and faceless to the public but who worked tirelessly in the background to keep things together.
    In the wider world, the likes of Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa have done their part throughout history to be the voices behind this message of hope.
    History aside, we are now called upon to leave for our children and children’s children a history that is as rich and as inspiring as the one that was left for us.
    We sing proudly and loudly that: “The Lord has been the people’s guide for past three hundred years; With Him still on the people’s side we have no doubts or fears; Upward and Onward we still go inspired exulting free, and greater will our nation grow in strength and unity.” We must now live what we sing. We must dig deep down and use every sinew in our collective bodies to make the words that Irving Burgie penned our reality.
    It is not an easy task but we must put our hope and faith in something greater. We must seek out that message of hope and reiterate it throughout our land.
    South African cleric and human rights activist Desmond Tutu said: “Hope is being able to see the light despite all of the darkness.”

    Concerning cancellation by the tour group because of hotels require mandatory vaccinations.

    Hotels need not require mandatory vaccinations if the GoB makes it a requirement to board a plane to Barbados.

    I just returned from a trip to a neighboring island and did not have to submit proof of vaccination to the hotel. Why?

    Because a part of the process for entering the island was
    (1) proof of a negative test within 48/72 hours before entering the island, and
    (2) proof of vaccination before boarding the plane.

    These items are taken care of before the tourist get admission to the island.

    I have one question for Mr Foster and if the answer is NO I find his approach laughable.

    Are all of YOUR employees vaccinated? If they are not then maybe vendors should refuse to do business with your company for fear of exposure to their staff. If all your employees are not then as a customer should I now use your approach and not come there to do business?

    Next time think what you are suggesting through a bit more before coming to the public.

In other words everyone will catch it so what is the point of mass testing.

    There will be no herd immunity as it has been shown that even those vaccinated can catch and spread the virus so let us stop using that phrase as the cure all.

    Secondly they are already variants like the one in Chile that are vaccine resistant so let us accept that too. So what’s the answer?

    Protocols hand washing and masks wearing are proven barriers. Will we ever get rid of covid? Who knows but life and the economy must go on. If vaccinations reduce death and hospitalization then let’s get them. I got both of mine with no side effects.

    My point is we need to move to the next chapter now and talk about coexisting with Covid as opposed to getting rid of it as that is not happening anytime soon if at all.

    This is the reason for this particular blog. What the experts still agree on is that being vaccinated helps to stave off serious illness and possibly death preempting stress on the health facilities.

    We should focus on more important matters. It is why there is increasing apathy regarding politics and politicians. Do we seriously expect the correct even if harsh decisions will be taken with both main political parties jockeying for 2023 position? No!

    That said we have to make some hard calls. Unfortunately this is a conversation not being had in the traditional media space in Barbados. Let us see what happens next week.

    Can you imagine what would happen if it turns out that the millions of deaths were caused by the inability of a Government to supply clean water to its population?

    All the lockdowns would have been tantamount to murder.

    Yet, some countries have gone for ages with no problems.

    Taiwan is the best example.

    Singapore, New Zealand and Dominica have done exceptionally well.

    Australia for a while too.

    Boiling water is a way for an individual to do his own thing.

    I don’t boil mine because I don’t think my water comes from a source with no zoning protection.

    If you come from an area you know (and you will know) that is prone to COVID, “boil de watuh” and ease off the bathing.

    Rig up a system to catch rain water off the roof and use it to bathe.

    That way you have done something constructive and not curled up in your house waiting to die.

    Masking up, social distancing, washing hands etc are all good to do, vaccination too if you are so inclined, but every day I go without apparently catching it my hope rises.

    The beautiful thing with my way of thinking is that if it is in the water it can be eradicated.

    We don’t have to live with it forever.

    I have hope and I am content!!

    So far, so good.

    LAST WEEK A FRIEND WITH MILD SYMPTHONS FLU LIKE BORROWED FUNDS TO GO TO A PRIVATE DOCTOR FOR A TEST AFTER FEELING UNWELL FOR CLOSE TO A WEEK.

    TEST CAME BACK POSITIVE HOWEVER WAS ABLE TO COPE WITH NO SIGNIFICANT ISSUES BECAUSE OF GOOD IMMUNINE SYSTEM.

    PEOPLE SHOULD BE LEFT TO MAKE A DECISION ON MASK WEARING AND ON VACCINES.

    THE ABOVE 3 FAR GREATER CAUSES OF DEATH ARE BUSINESS AS USUAL SO SHOULD COVID LIKE ANYTHING ELSE THAT CAN AFFECT MANKIND.

    If you do catch rain water be prepared for mosquitoes.

    Should be able to get chlorine tablets.

    I catch rainwater but don’t use it to bathe in for the same reason I don’t boil.

    WHO Lists Mu as ‘Variant of Interest’

    The World Health Organization is monitoring a new coronavirus variant called “mu” — known by scientists as B.1.621 — and has added it to the list of “variants of interest” because of preliminary evidence it can evade antibodies.

    Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, said the United States was also monitoring the new variant, which was first identified in Colombia in January and now makes up 39% of all cases there.

    The WHO says the variant has the potential to evade immunity provided by vaccines and antibodies, and because of that, it was listed as a “variant of interest” on Aug. 30.

    It gets more interesting: Since schools are going on line, the business people are saying that with a lot of school uniforms and other supplies in stock and sales will decline substantially, they need government assistance with some “ cash”
    to offset the sales decline.
    Well, we pumped 300 million into the tourist industry so we should expect the same to be done for this group as well.
    A lot of these are small black operations at both the manufacturing and retail end.
    Let’s hope the right thing is done.

    THEY SHOULD HAVE have insurance for business disruption and had nearly 2 years to get it during the pandemic…many would get payouts like the sandy lane racists and would still prefer MOOCH OFF THE POPULATION further disenfrachasing the vulnerable because they think everything is about them and their crooked ways…….only a stupid traitor government would even answer those fools….no one cares about their debts, there are people on the island WHO HAVE NO FOOD…

    William…even the small operators who have been around for a long time, 30-40 years in the manufacturing of uniform businesses should have insurance for such an eventuality….it’s the startups you would expect to run into financial trouble because of limited sales in the best of times…and would require help…….

    but.i suspect it’s the manufacturers in Grazettes and other areas, minority owned businesses are being parasitic…..and should not get a dime…

    if you have had the virus do you have antibodies
    if they really want it to stop , they should say where the cases are,….in my town they say 49 people have tested positive but no indication where, if they told me it was at so and so park or beach I would avoid it for a while , we have a few cases at this restaurant well I would wait 14 days before going back, its getting stupid when they say in a pandemic they can enforce you to put drugs in your body and charge people who dont yet you having it cant be exposed .for the safety of all., not to shame anyone just to let everyone know if you had contact with them get tested or people they are close with steer clear till they get a negative result.

    I believe vaccination helps to stave off serious illness and possibly death.

    That is why I got Pfizer first then Moderna in June.

    I still wear a mask when I go into a mall or supermarket.

    I have no qualifications or expertise to contribute meaningfully to this discussion.

    I spoke with one of my kinswomen, a very smart biochemist. I’ve know her as we say in Barbados, since before she was born. I TRUST HER. She told me “I took the vaccine. You should take the vaccine. Covid is not done with us yet.”

    So if I have a choice between listening to Mercola, or some other stranger on the internet, and listening to my kinswoman.

    I choose to listen to my kinswoman.

    So everybody got debt
    Bajans have been asking govt for help in collecting their severance and unemployment for years and many had to wait and still waiting
    These businesses should be ashamed of running to govt like paupers with cup in hand
