BIG MISTAKE, NO CORRECTION

It is no secret to the BU family and elsewhere the man behind the Barbados Welcome Stamp is Peter Lawrence Thompson. To his credit he thanked the BU family for helping him give birth to the concept.

The Barbados Welcome Stamp is a work programme which establishes a visa to allow people to work remotely in Barbados for a maximum of 12 months. The visa is available to anyone who meets the visa requirements and whose work is location independent, whether individuals or families – see Barbados Welcome Stamp FAQs.

It is with regret the government implemented Peter’s idea which has been quickly copied by several countries in the region. To date Peter has not received official recognition from the Barbados government. The refusal by government to give Peter his due is immoral and unethical, take your pick. To rub salt in the wound he was not selected to sit on a face saving panel to come up with a new brand slogan after the Little Island, Big Barbados campaign was jettisoned by Prime Minister Mia Mottley. In the same way the prime minister has intervened in this matter and others before it, she needs to remove this stain from whatever legacy she is building for herself and the country. Also political and NGO voices must speak up for what is right.

We will never know if the reason Mottley shelved the campaign is based on political considerations with an eye on a 2023 general election. What the blogmaster knows is Peter Lawrence Thompson should have been asked to sit on the so-called Destination Reboot Panel. The truth is if he was asked it would be an admission of what is blatantly being denied.

  • wuh since they have been stealing the creative work of children sitting CXC for decades, selling it out for millions of dollars, don’t give the children recognition or a dime of the money received for their work, you really believe they are going to give a Black man recognition, let alone a dime for his concept for helping save their sorry, uncreative, no nothing, nobody useless lives…dream on.

PLT will always be remembered for saving the island in 2020, while they will ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS THIEVES..and LIARS…

this is proof how they operate with anyone of African ancestry, they don’t believeryou deserve to have anything even if it’s yours, they don’t value Black lives and believe you should sit and take the discrimination, disenfranchisement and human rights violation they dish out and have for decades, they are the lowest form of life, and RABID anti black negros.

Agree totally. However, @ PLT has always been a supporter of people receiving recognition for their work. The question remains: For one who is known for being heavily critical of those in government who circumvent proper ethics etc, I find it more than passing strange, that he has refused to expose the government and especially the Prime Minister for this misdeed.
He has repeatedly stated that his fortunate circumstance , financial and otherwise , is not threatened or in anyway inhibited by him not getting the recognition for his idea.
I am of the firm opinion that it is this same “ fortunate circumstance” that informs his stance of refusing to expose Mottley because PLT and Mottley enjoy similar fortunate circumstance.
In other words this may very well be Peter protecting one he considers to be of his privileged and socially prominent background.
It’s mind boggling however we choose to look at it.

It is really shameful and disgraceful that govt would opt to.overlook PTL efforts with a simple offer on the committe as a token of appreciation by which to recognize him selfless efforts in helping to save the Tourism industry
Govt actions towards PTL are shameful enough causing for the asking of why
Also actions which can be described as closing the door in a person face that lift the dying tourism industry out of COVID death grips
This is the type of story that speaks of a govt who is callous meanspirited and down right ungrateful
What all needs to understand that whether PTL wants recognition for his efforts or not

“I find it more than passing strange, that he has refused to expose the government and especially the Prime Minister for this misdeed.”
    +++++++++++++++++
I have never shielded the Government or Prime Minister Mottley from criticism for their failure to recognise me as the instigator of the Welcome Stamp program. I have been thanked personally Kerrie Symmonds, who was Minister of Tourism at the time I sent my memo to Cabinet at the request of a member of the Barbados Jobs & Investment Council.

I gave the idea away, I did not submit it with an invoice, so in that sense there is no question of monetary theft… however, we teach even toddlers to say “thank you” when they are gifted something that they want.

That lack of common courtesy does hurt my feelings, but my feelings are a very small consideration alongside the economic survival of so many communities in Barbados. The much deeper hurt is that I am not allowed to contribute further to the development of this innovation at an official level while I see them making all sorts of avoidable implementation mistakes.

The theft of intellectual property is a serious offense. Mottley certainly will not bring a case against herself and her government. The onus is on Peter, His refusal to expose and even take legal action against the administration runs counter to everything he writes and if you and others don’t find this strange it means that Peter is being given a pass.
I expect the backlash from a view that I have written already on this same BU.
But I am fully aware the ball is in Peter’s court.
However, I will go further and state that if what has been done to him was done to anybody else, he would be the first to stand up for their rights.
The question that must remain is : why his only excuse for not speaking the truth to power is that he is financially and otherwise fortunate to not want “ anything”
He has therefore left the door open for speculation and suspicion. He is way too smart to expect not to be put under the microscope on this one.
The only “common good “ we need from Peter is to use his local and international influence to ensure that as @ WURA states, the theft of citizens intellectual property rights is not continuously given the green light. By refusing to expose this shameful act, he is contributing to such deviancy. Peter is giving Mottley a pass. Why ?

Last week the New York Times published a major feature about the tourism industry across the Caribbean.

They understand how important remote work innovation is to the industry. They framed Barbados as the leader in adapting to the economic crisis in tourism primarily because of the Welcome Stamp innovation. This is what they wrote about Barbados:

    REMOTE-WORK VISAS
    Looking ‘beyond tourism’ in Barbados

A few weeks after the world shuttered, Peter Lawrence Thompson, an entrepreneur from Barbados, pitched the idea of one-year remote work visas to the island’s cabinet. “Our tourism industry must adapt or risk death,” he wrote, outlining a plan to take “Barbados beyond tourism.”

“We’ve been talking forever about diversifying the economy, but it’s hard,” Mr. Thompson said of the independent British Commonwealth nation. “This is a new type of tourism, it’s just very long-term. It’s not vacation, it’s workation.”

More than 2,500 people — mostly from the United States, Britain, Canada and Nigeria — have applied since the Barbados Welcome Stamp Visa began in July, according to recent data from Barbados Tourism Marketing, Inc.

And Terra Caribbean, a real estate group with properties across the region, recently found that about three-quarters of almost 100 visa holders they surveyed had never even visited Barbados before they applied for the program; by November, more than 40 percent of the newcomers Terra Caribbean tracked were budgeting $2,500 to $5,000 monthly for housing.

“From a Barbados brand perspective, this initiative will pay dividends for many years to come,” the group concluded in an analysis this fall.

The remote-work concept has been adopted by other nations across the Caribbean, including Anguilla, Aruba, Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Dominica and Montserrat.

Danita Becker, a senior product owner for a start-up in Dallas, moved to Barbados with the visa in September.

“Coming to the island accelerated a lot of growth for me, putting into perspective some of my career goals,” she said, adding that it provided a break from the mental stress of social isolation and racial tensions in the United States.

Now, most mornings, Ms. Becker, 40, who had never spent more than a few weeks in Barbados visiting her Bajan family, swims in the sea before returning home or to an open-air restaurant to work. Weekends include snorkeling and swimming with turtles, and she has also joined local Christian fellowship groups.

Welcome Stamp may extend visas another year, but Ms. Becker is considering citizenship.

“I have aspirations to make a mark on the island,” she said. “And through technology and volunteering, do my part to improve things here.”

You are a true gentleman but on this one , I would have to say that we continue to let these vagabonds “ hurt our feelings “
When I read that sophisticated political master manipulator Ezra Alleyne actually praising the government ad being the” first “ to implement your vision gleefully stating that everybody was copying their “ master stroke “ , I was inflamed because I know you took the gracious step of thanking those on BU who brainstormed this idea with you. I don’t think any “ invoice”is needed to expose such bold faced theft.
We are a strange people. I used to pump gas and one day Sir Emil Straker drove in with his high end car. It suddenly dawned on me that his folk songs were affording him a very nice lifestyle and then I reflected on why other entertainers were catching their behinds;many have since expired in pure poverty .
I asked a lawyer why this is so he said: “ “William the Merrymen is get their royalties.” I was a mere lad and that was my first introduction to copyright/ intellectual property etc.
It took another fifty years plus before successive governments started to talk about such things.
Nowaday, they talk about the creative industries and many creative industry workers are still being robbed as @WURA indicates.
I am yet to hear of any member of the Merrymen being poverty stricken. This is the complete opposite of the plight of many entertainers who look like @Peter.
    We are gluttons for punishment.

So he did say he gifted it many times before
What u don’t get is that govt took the gift and called the contents the makings of their own

Take for example Mr . Prescott making of the Barbados flag
Do u think if he had gifted the flag and govt in turn did not recognize his efforts but instead use his efforts to be acclaimed as of their makings
    Would that be right
So I don’t know how after printing the article that describe govt actions as unethical u come with a broadside attempt to defend govt
Your hypocritical lenses are being blurred at this point I don’t know if u belive or mean what u print in the article

Your comments have left me a bit puzzled. I thought to myself you probably omitted pertinent information perhaps for particular reasons.

Surely you can’t be suggesting the opportunity to benefit from one’s intellectual property was opened only to white entertainers? What prevented Black entertainers from receiving their royalties as well?

Do you know if the ‘Merrymen’ had a manager? Why couldn’t it be a situation where Straker’s approach was to treat entertainment as a business and not a hobby?

Every time I see Peter singing his song, the following goes through my mind:.
Why is PLT so reluctant to claim his trophy?
What does he know that I don’t know?
Is it his idea or does it belong to others/
Does the BLP have pictures of him? Yo can finish the thought.

Either seize the trophy or get off of the stage. I have no time for sweet songs. He is a probably a better man than I am and I wish him the best.

My point was simply this: We talk about the creative industries but no government has taken such matters seriously until quite recently.
You must know that most Black entertainers , during the time I mentioned ,did not have the resources to pursue such intricate matters. I don’t even think such matters were on the statue books. My dear friend , the Merrymen would have had the legal and financial backing to benefit from those opportunities.

You and I have known each other since schooldays, so you would remember that I was always a bit weird.

You see, there is no trophy that I want to seize… the politicians can busy themselves seizing trophies. A simple ‘thank you’ is not a trophy, it’s just good manners.

I do not know anybody’s secrets and I have no secrets of any consequence about myself to protect, so there is no mystery about my “weakness” (you will recall that I was always the smallest, shortest boy in class: I’ve always had to rely on my wits rather than any perception of strength).

You are correct that I am getting exactly what I deserve. I gift wrapped and gave my idea to politicians, and they have behaved like politicians (you know full well that the DLP would not have been any more gracious, but the DLP of 2020 might have been too stupid to appropriate the idea as their own).

I am probably getting much more than I deserve: the chance to build a profitable company at https://remoteworkbarbados.com which can play a pivotal role in building a billion dollar economic sector for the benefit of Barbados. I’m a very lucky man.

Stop looking at the political party or the persons who made the appointments and look at the panel itself.. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face… recognize a possible winner

My preference is for an island wide competition, but from the time I saw that name “Anthony Gabby Carter”, I place this appointment in the win column. Let me add that having left Barbados years ago, I am not intimately familiar with the works of Red Plastic Bag but I expect him to make a solid contribution. I expect Gabby and Red Plastic bag to be full of ideas and if they cannot get it done, then we should just abandon the whole idea.

I have no idea of the rest of the team members though the surnames Comissiong and Straker are familiar ones. By including hotel owners, hotel workers, taxi, cultural and recreational representative, this team has the width and depth to produce a meaningful slogan.

I expect a big win but unlike those who have staked themselves to one position, my final grade will be assigned based on results.

Does anyone wonder why Jeremy Stephen knows that I was the instigator of the Welcome Stamp idea? I’ll tell you. Jeremy was one of the many people that I tested my ideas on before submitting them to Cabinet. I not only argued with you kind folk here on BU, but I engaged in email and WhatsApp and LinkedIn conversations with a range of tourism and economics experts to have them try to find all the weak spots in my concept. Among them were:
+ Jeremy Stephen, PhD in Economics
+ Peter Boos, Chairman Emeritus EY Caribbean
+ Ronnie Yearwood, PhD in International Trade Law
+ Paul Doyle, CEO of Crane Resorts
    + Patrick Hoyos, Business Journalist
+ Simon Naitram, PhD in Economics
+ Aaron Kamugisha, PhD in Cultural Studies and Chair of Department at UWI Cave Hill
+ Mood Patel, Chairman of Intimate Hotels of Barbados
+ Adrian Loveridge, Barbados tourism expert
+ Richard Drayton, PhD in History and Rhodes Professor of Imperial History at King’s College London
+ Charlie Herbert, Chairman of the Board at Goddards Enterprises
+ Roland Clarke, PhD CEO at Clarke Energy Associates
& a bunch of others that my senior brain does not recall in the moment.

So all sorts of people across Barbados and the world know about the origin of the Welcome Stamp Program. In fact it was Adrian Loveridge who has contributed so often to BU, and with whom I had so many arguments, who told the New York Times about how the program had come about.

And moreover, I view this man’s lack of efficacy, as a sign of strength rather than a sign of weakness, as you have first hypothesized.

If you’re aware of the difficulties in that era as you outlined, why complain about it now?

I believe it is unreasonable to expect any ‘government’ to think about every possible thing.

What prevented those entertainers from communicating with successive administrations to influence legislative policy? Surely it wouldn’t have required any substantial amount of resources to form a special interest group to lobby their cause.

Mia likes taking credit for every dam thing
Even a controversy surround the vaccine distributions
So much so that one govt minister in one of the small islands refute Mia’s benelovency comments as Barbados gifts to the island
His comments made headlines and he had to refute
From day one the issue of govt not being transparent has led to suspicious motives on Mia’s part
Now within this latest controversy another angle is being added that hinges on possibilities with questions as to why PTL did not fight for his recognition
Far for it to question his motives
He did acknowledge that he felt a sadness of hurt
Maybe his integrity surpasses that of govt

Yes its about time PTL get a thank you = it is long overdue. If there is anything else coming his way at a later date then ok but the thank you is pass due now.

I keep explaining to all y’all Bajans that individuals cannot copyright Visa programs nor can nations as any country can implement similar ideas and Governments doing pick up of ideas in public domain is not copying it is running with good ideas by the people for the people. Peter is an originator like Grandmaster Flash the first the #1 and nobody can take that away from him.

I would suggest that War on Everyone does the same but different and makes a suggestion for an African Visa program which is really my adaptation but as she would say I have not got the qualification of a big black ass and cannot suggest that sort of stuff. Another thought is setting up a recording studio in Africa as they have got the rhythm.

Let me school you a bit here on Western Thought…. you see the man name Socrates? Well he is One of the major figure of the western intellectual tradition ……….and he took more of what he knew from what is called the Nature philosophers or the philosophers who looked to Nature for answers to life challenging questions, but Socrates is regarded by those in the academic world, as the first or the original Philosopher of Western Thought, to looked within Self rather than Nature, like those before him, for the answer to life challenging questions, so Socrates is regarded as the first Moralist Philosopher of the Western Intellectual Tradition, even those he took from those before him to build upon his own thought.

Dred, if you examine with a meticulous eye all of the Philosophers of the Western Intellectual tradition, Chinese, East Indian or Islamic Philosophical Tradition, you will discover that they all had been influenced by other Philosophers before them. So how can these men of thought, claim an originality with the stolen ideas of those before them?

Yes I said a certified lawyer (a tongue in cheek comment)
Looking at all the legal mistakes that have happen under Mia watch the jury is still out on her certification
Winning an election does not in any way remove that suspicion
With much emphasis it is hard to believe seeing all the legal mistakes done under her watch that her certification as a lawyer does her due justice

Oh how low indeed the (former) Mighty Enuff has fallen as to find himself slugging it out in the gutter with the poor lightweight Dompey.

We cannot help but notice the shame on your face and indeed the deafening silence since the PM bitch-slapped you down by making a volte-face decision on the slogan you said was simply the best (and better than all the rest).

This the second time you have been made to look like a downright ass-licking fool of a red-painted sycophant on BU.

First it was the case of the unlawful appointment of the second DCoP on which your hot-headed red administration had to recant.

Now this clear case of putting the money-thieving cart before the commonsense horse.

You, “Enuff” have now suffered your second major knockdown and defeat because of your blind subservience to the red bull of political stupidity.

You are now so punch-drunk and lying cold on the floor that it’s time your handlers the Johnny No. 2 and Frankie the fool wrap you up in your blood-stained towel and remove you from the ring before you die from further embarrassing concussion.

We would suggest you look to redeem yourself by checking out who is Red Pepper Green(e).

Why not recommend to the Bajan-design slogan committee that the talents of both Rihanna and this ‘voice-actor’ son of the St. George soil be engaged in the marketing and promotion of the same home-grown Slogan?

After all, Home Drums should beat first when it comes to recognizing talent instead of wasting hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ money on a cart load of stolen crap.
