Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to soak up the resources for both under developed and developed countries. At the time of posting this blog the global medical community has been unable to inform about a vaccine. The blogmaster read the perspective of a leading Australian virologist recently where she opined that the world will have to live with the virus, in fact it will become as accepted as the Flu.

The disruption caused by COVID-19 will impact service based economies like Barbados and others in the reason where it hurts, in the breadbasket. One could rehash old arguments about the folly of putting all our eggs in one basket. If we are to work hard to move from the unsustainable position we find ourselves, we have to do more to shift our over reliance on tourism. Government’s current investment pipeline has signaled there are no immediate or medium term plans to modify the economic engines firing the economy.

If there ever was an opportunity to message our leaders there is an urgent need to reorder how we do business, it is now.

COVID-19
Since this news alert Italy is virtually on lock down. Thanks John A for always feeding the blogmaster with important information.

The local authorities based on public announcements and news coverage have been rolling out awareness campaigns, bumping up screening at ports of entry, building health infrastructure and leading discussions at the regional level to ensure a regional COVID-19 approach. Given the pandemic nature of COVID-19, it seems a matter of time before Barbados reports its first case. The biggest challenge for Barbados and service based economies is the fatalistic impact disruptions to global supply chains will bring.

This article highlights the LACK OF basic intelligence of the leaders, yes frontline workers are at risk of being infected by the virus, so is everyone else and frontline workers can also spread the virus once infected and that includes teachers spreading it to students in the schools and vice versa, which means EVERYONE INCLUDING STUDENTS SHOULD BE EDUCATED TO WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR…..but here is this one acting like teachers cannot be carriers of Covid-19 and students will be the only carriers..steuppsss…..so not impressed.

after years and years and years of telling the titled, emptyheaded, uppity clowns of parliament to stop the dependency tourism, diverisfy to the point that it only becomes a moneymaking side hustle, it is safe to say that your leaders are as dumb as rocks and cannot see pass wholesale dependency and slave like labor for their own people, so good luck.

If they did not have the skills or will to diversify in the past 40 corrupt years and they have had thousands of opportunities, pray tell where exactly will they find those skills now outside of hiring taxpayer paid multimillion dollar foreign consultants to show them how to do this and how to do that….another waste of taxpayer’s funds.

You have hit the nail on its head.

  4. The effects of this virus will be felt in our traditionally slow period starting say in May. We will also have to prepare for a Cropover season that may well be slower than usual. If there was ever a time for government to watch their spending it is now, as they may well not reach their revenue target from the one horse economy we have.

I don’t think people understand the rate at which this thing is growing. On Wednesday last week Italy had roughly 4000 cases. By Saturday they reported close to 6000! We have to remember that people travelling now were booked for weeks, however it is our forward bookings that we must worry over. The economic fallout will be worst for most countries than the actual virus that you can depend on.

  5. What i observe here in Barbados is that the various news outlets and govt officials have not been able to communicate to the people the harshness and reality of the economic problems with which this virus is attached
Seems as if barbadians has somewhat detached themselves from the economic realities of the virus and smirks at the economic problems which other countries are experiencing
Govt should by now be preparing the people for the economic problems whivh comes with the virus which would include shortages of necessary items

  6. The economic realities to households and govt will be harsh which will undoubtedly bring stress especially when food supply becomes limited and items like toiletries are but hard to come by
Not to mention families with babies cant getting access to everyday items like pampers
The stories in the international press where people are stockpiling food should be sufficient food for thought for small island countries who solely relies on tourism product

and of course we have to tell the emptyheaded leaders for FREE that these viruses and plagues happen every 100 years, this one is late by about 2 years, it is never a matter of if BUT WHEN THEY HAPPEN…and one of those plagues that cut Europe’s population by about half centuries ago LASTED ABOUT 10 YEARS.

it’s important to note that these uppity leaders also get taken out by these plagues and viruses. titles cannot help or shield them, so their arrogance does not even register on a virus’ scale of destruction.

  8. WURA-War-on-U Avatar

  9. For what is it worth everyone would not be dead
The poor would still be here
The fact remains until death takes its toll
The job of good governance remains in the hands of those who managed the country and it is there role to make all facts about the virus known to the populace
    No ifs ands or buts

  10. According to bioweapons expert Francis Boyle, evidence suggests COVID-19 is a weaponized coronavirus originating from the Biosafety Level 4 facility in Wuhan City, China
COVID-19 appears to be a chimera consisting of SARS (an already weaponized coronavirus), HIV genetic material and influenza virus, designed with gain of function properties that allow it to spread a greater distance than normal
Others have suggested COVID-19 may involve Prevotella, a bacterium known to cause respiratory tract infections, and that this may explain some of the observed symptoms and how it can spread through feces
RNA sequencing data from Wuhan show millions of Prevotella proteins amid a few thousand COVID-19 viruses. Prevotella bacteria was also found in six COVID-19 patients from the same family in Hong Kong
Supplements thought to be useful in the prevention of coronavirus infection include NAC, elderberry, quercetin., beta-glucan, glucosamine, selenium, zinc, lipoic acid, sulforaphane, resveratrol, vitamin D, Bifidobacterium bifidum strain probiotics and sporebiotics.Who knows what to do? NOT WHO!

  11. Naturally, hand washing frequently, not shaking hands or touching your face or surfaces, and staying away from crowded areas is critical.

  12. Notice these virus become full borne in about 10 years in the poorest and most populated cities in China
Cities which are breeding ground for bacteria
Reason why they can mutate rapidly from city to city and country to country as they encounter other sources from which they can bred and mutate
The environment has been saying Stop the pollution for years but no one seems to be listening
China tops the list as one of the. worst countries for pollution

  13. I think we have to be realistic and accept that sooner or later a case will show up on our shores. Between cruise and long stay tourism our exposure is too great for this not to happen.

My hope is that we have not only a medical plan, but a pro active media plan as well to combat this. We will need to get out there and advise the industry that it is an isolated case that we have well in hand, if we don’t do that then the message will go out there as ” Corona Virus reaches Barbados.” We therefore must be proactive on both fronts to avoid this.

  14. “We will need to get out there and advise the industry that it is an isolated case that we have well in hand, if we donโ€™t do that then the message will go out there as โ€ Corona Virus reaches Barbados.โ€

I am surprised that you are missing the message, people are being warned to STAY OFF CRUISE SHIPS, especially the elderly who are also being warned to STAY OFF LONG HAUL FLIGHTS…don’t forget these are the retirees with the money to travel, most of whom have underlying health conditions…

no one is going to risk their lives because some sell out miseducated negro governments in the Caribbean took it upon themselves and decided DECADES AGO that dependency tourism is the only way for their people to survive….and they never bothered to look into any other avenues of independent wealth creation because it did not fit into their TIEFING SCHEDULES…they loved seeing their people dependent and helpless…NOW THEY WILL PAY THE PRICE.

  15. And if ya think it’s bad now, wait until all this shit really gets started. doubt the leaders will learn anything from any of this, they think too highly of themselves only, while depending on consultants to tell them everything.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/global-recession-inevitable-analysts-comment-on-market-crash-2020-3?fbclid=IwAR3QRjJfQf-YOOzKTx9INYB3hJByCzl01ijr1WGZmePA7yAQuKwxww9VXVw

“The sell-off across stocks, bonds, and oil prices on Monday morning has been referred to as “carnage” by multiple analysts.

Oil prices slumped more than 25% after OPEC and other major producers failed to agree to cut output.

“There have been plenty of bad days since the coronavirus infected investors,” one analyst said. “Yet Monday’s session felt like a different kettle of fish entirely.”

Analysts warned of a global recession Monday as a coronavirus-fueled sell-off dragged stocks, bond yields, and oil prices lower.”

  16. let me reiterate for those who believe they can skirt and dance around this reality.

I am surprised that you are missing the message, people are being warned to STAY OFF CRUISE SHIPS, especially the elderly who are also being warned to STAY OFF LONG HAUL FLIGHTSโ€ฆdonโ€™t forget these are the retirees with the money to travel, most of whom have underlying health conditions…most everyone else rely on credit card debt to travel..

UK…is projected to lose 250,000 souls to this virus. That is nearly the whole population of Barbados.

US…is projected to lose 500,000 souls to this virus. That is more than the whole population of Barbados.

So you are still telling yourself that somehow the tourist industry will not be impacted and it will be business as usual…dream on…just remember some of these viruses take YEARS and not months to control…they are hoping to be able to control it in another year once a vaccine has had it’s trials.

  17. Just in case some still believe this is some kinda new age, modern day joke, read and weep, this has been happening for centuries…it is just now our turn…the last outbreak was in 1918, just the other day…there are people still alive who survived it.

“America is โ€œpast the point of containmentโ€ in its battle against the coronavirus, senior health officials have admitted.

There are now more than 550 confirmed cases of the virus in the United States and at least 22 deaths linked to the outbreak.

Now, the governmentโ€™s strategy had to change from trying to hold the virus at bay to actively seeking to minimise its impact and slow its spread, experts said.

Speaking on US television, the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration Dr Scott Gottlieb, said everything had changed.

โ€œWeโ€™re past the point of containment. We have to implement broad mitigation strategies. The next two weeks are really going to change the complexion in this country.”

  18. @ wura

Yes the forecasted figures are frightening. Look at Italy 5000 cases mid week last week and as of this morning 7300.

The markets today took a beating for sure and with the Dow losing 5% by Midday we know what lies ahead. For us we will know our fate when we see our Cropover arrivals. We should be good to the end of April though, as this is all pre booked travel.

The other issue no one is talking about is the effect this will have on our much heralded tourism projects. You can bet investors will be waiting to see what comes of this Virus before they commit to the start of any new projects.

How nice it would be now to have a booming agricultural sector. I have been calling for this for over a year now but glossy hotels made for better politics. Unfortunately none of us can eat concrete even though some of us love the taste of steal.

So called free-trade and hyper-competitiveness have reduced most small islands and poorer countries to a state of total economic dependency. On that same continuum, Asian countries, China in particular, have become one big factory of the world. Any disruption in is this supply chain mechanism is going to reek havoc on the system.

I have never been a fan of globalisation and WTO race-to-bottom free-trade system. It reduces small players in the global economic space to just consumers and gives one a false sense of security. There is no free lunch and there is also a price to pay for cheapness.

Why are you citing Boyle who is a lawyer and not trained in microbiology or molecular biology? By citing a man who has no training in the discipline and calling him an expert is rather far-fetch and contributes to conspiracy theories disseminated by charlatans. โ€œThe killer virus that just keeps breeding: PROFESSOR HUGH PENNINGTON explains how Covid-19 spreads, what its โ€˜aggressive strainโ€™ is and whether it will die down in the summer
By PROFESSOR HUGH PENNINGTON FOR THE DAILY MAIL
    PUBLISHED: 22:14 GMT, 6 March 2020 | UPDATED: 08:31 GMT, 7 March 2020
    โ€ข WHAT EXACTLY IS CORONAVIRUS?
โ€˜Coronavirusโ€™ is the name given to a family of viruses that we have known about since the mid-1960s. Covid-19, the cause of the current outbreak, is a new strain of coronavirus.
In total, we know of seven coronaviruses that can infect humans. They include certain strains of the common cold and the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome).
SARS, MERS and Covid-19 are coronaviruses that evolved from animals to infect humans.
At the virusโ€™s core is a bundle of RNA (ribonucleic acid), one of the two main types of genetic material underpinning all life (the other being DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid).
This is protected by a protein coating that assists the virus in its sole aim in life: to replicate and pass on its genes.
To do this it must invade the cells of other organisms, using long tendrils on its protein coat which reach out like fingers to grasp on to protein molecules on the surfaces of the cell it is trying to infect.
These tendrils have knobs on the end which make the virus look like a crown โ€“ corona in Latin, hence its name.
HOW IS IT PASSED BETWEEN PEOPLE?
The virusโ€™s preferred home is in the mucous membranes of the lungs. Each package of newly-replicated viral RNA is wrapped in a protective coating of its own and can be passed on in various ways: most commonly being coughed out of the airways in the form of airborne droplets and then inhaled by other people.
Alternatively, it can be transferred manually โ€“ for example, if you touch a hard surface onto which the droplets have fallen, hence the importance of current advice to wash your hands thoroughly and regularly.
From the hands, coronavirus can get into the body when you touch your mouth, your nose or your eyes โ€“ the latter being connected to the throat via tear-ducts โ€“ and then breathed back down into the lungs.
The virus can also be found in human stools. This is a theoretical method of transmission โ€“ poor sanitation caused many SARS infections โ€“ but there is no evidence yet that Covid-19 has been passed on like this.
HOW DOES IT MAKE US ILL?
By forcing the lung cells of the infected person to replicate its RNA, Covid-19 disrupts normal respiratory functioning. This includes the constant waving motion of cilia: tiny hair-like projections in the lungs which sweep out mucus and dirt or particles that have been breathed in from the air around us.
With this vital defence mechanism impaired, the lungs are more vulnerable to potentially deadly infections like pneumonia.
We know that our immune systems are strongest when we are younger, so it is not surprising that children appear to be the least vulnerable to developing the worst symptoms of coronavirus.
The opposite is true of elderly people, especially if their lung function is already compromised โ€“ for example, by life-long smoking or conditions like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
In people of all ages, the symptoms can be worsened when the bodyโ€™s immune system goes into overdrive in its response to infection. White blood cells dispatched to fight the virus and reduce the inflammation in the lungs can damage healthy cells in the process.
The fever experienced by many victims is another immune response, with the body raising its internal temperature to a level at which the virus can no longer operate.
The majority of people infected with Covid-19 will experience symptoms so mild that they will not even know that they have had the disease.
WHAT IS THE VIRUSโ€™S โ€˜AGGRESSIVEโ€™ STRAIN?
Viruses mutate all the time and what the Chinese scientists have identified is a minor variation (known as L-type) to the existing Covid-19 (S-type) rather than a new and insidious new virus.
The word โ€˜aggressiveโ€™ is being used to describe it but the facts are less alarming. The S-type which kicked off the epidemic in China appears to be milder and less infectious; L-type seems to be more infectious โ€“ it currently accounts for 70 per cent of cases โ€“ but does not appear to be causing symptoms that are any worse.
Bear in mind that new strains of influenza are evolving constantly. That is why our annual flu jabs contain two or three different vaccines which change year on year.
Any future vaccine against Covid-19 will similarly take account of the different strains out there.
WILL IT DIE DOWN OVER THE SUMMER?
Respiratory infections are certainly more common in winter. There is no simple explanation for this, but one theory is that viruses can survive longer in colder weather when there is less UV radiation (which can kill microbes) from sunlight bearing down on the hard surfaces on which they linger.
Or it may be that people get together in confined spaces more often in winter.
Whatever the explanation, there is no way of knowing what warmer weather will bring for the coronavirus. During the 2009 swine flu pandemic, UK cases peaked in July.
    CAN YOU COMPLETELY PROTECT YOURSELF?
Short of wearing a spacesuit, or stopping the people around you from breathing, the answer is no.
But public health control measures proved highly effective in eradicating SARS in 2002/2003.
Even if we are not completely rid of Covid-19, it may eventually evolve into different strains of the common cold โ€“ a recurring winter infection which many of us build immunity to, having caught it once.
That said, there is no room for complacency. And if we can draw anything positive from the spread of Covid-19, itโ€™s as a reminder that we cannot skimp on funding if science is to keep pace with the ever-evolving threats to our health both now and in the future.โ€

  33. @John A

Meanwhile back at the ranch. Did you listen to the news clip this afternoon about how Barbados and the region should continue to prepare in case we are visited by the virus? The point of interest will be the cost to fund a dip in productivity and related losses.

Should the private sector be responsible for eating the cost?

  34. pollution in china

  35. @Dr. Lucas

We have been flooded with information about the virus. How do we use the information to inform the best action plans to mitigate.

What are your top of mind ideas? Based on what you have observed so far are we on the right track?

  36. Our mothers and grandmother raised a dozen children without such a thing as Pampers or Snuggies or whatever they are called. Some of my children are younger than 30 and I also used reusable cloth diapers with them. Disposable diapers were for outings only. At home cloth diapers only. and when the child has outgrown the cloth diapers they are infinately reusable as cleaning rags, until the last one becomes a grey, ratty car cleaning rag.

We have all become too lazy and too wasteful.

  37. @Mariposa March 9, 2020 5:45 PM “Back in those days there was something called a family unit and most importantly mother did not work and had adequate time to do all house chores including washing baby diapers.”

Since yesterday was international women’s day let me remind everyody that all women work. Child raising is serious hard work.

I worked outside of the home for 43 years and 3 months, and I used mostly cloth diapers. Washing a few diapers by hand or by washing machine is not an impossible task for any loving parent, male or female.

  38. @David March 9, 2020 5:56 PM “Should the private sector be responsible for eating the cost?”

Does the private sector need workers?

And even more importantly, does the private sector need consumers to buy their goods and services?

If yes to either or both questions.

Then the private sector must step up.

This thing is teaching us that there is no “us” and “them”

    One world. One destiny.

We either live together or die together.

Welcome to the bandwagon! Does your erudite assessment cover the Hyatt hotel concrete pipedream?

One of our own Bajan-born correspondents living in Canada and going by the name โ€œHantsโ€ -along with a few other enlightened and patriotic bloggers- has been preaching like Paul the Carmetta Fraserโ€™s mantra of โ€˜Food Comes Firstโ€.

What that clarion call means is that Agriculture must not be treated as the Cinderella in the national motto of โ€œPride & Industryโ€ on the totem pole of the countryโ€™s economic and social development.

Are we going to see an emergency response to the fact that soon there will be food shortages in Bim resulting from the โ€˜factโ€™ that too much of the food imported into Barbados originates in China?

Will those hundreds of acres of once arable land find a new lease of life after overgrown with bush and overrun with vermin for years awaiting those house-planting profiteers to execute the death warrants issued by the political class working for the god called tourism?

As has been said before, those who have control over your food (and potable water) has control over your health and destiny.

โ€œLet food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.โ€ ~ Hippocrates

  42. @Miller

The food security issue has been pleaded for by many on this blog. I have no problem with tourism but we need to accept the reality that we are way too dependant on imported food. We can grow so much more for ourselves if we just put 10% of what we put in tourism into agriculture instead.

In the meantime we will watch how the Corona saga plays out. One thing is for sure and that is tourism globally will be affected. How bad and for how long only time with tell.
