Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The recent announcement that Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland was appointed Executive Chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Board triggered the interest of the blogmaster. Many in the know immediately wondered about the correctness of the decision appointing Minister Dwight Sutherland’s wife to the onerous task of leading the Board. Time will tell if she is able to improve QEH operations.

What the blogmaster found interesting was the accompanying statement from Minister of Health and Wellness Lt Col Jeffrey Bostic explained in the following BT newspaper extract.

At the end of August, Government announced that a mutual agreement had been reached for the separation of former CEO Dr Dexter James from his role at the 600-bed institution. Dr James had been on extended sick leave since February. Director of Support Services Louise Bobb has been acting in that senior position since that announcement.

Readers will recall that days before the last general election former CEO Dexter James’ $257, 129.64 contract was renewed  for 4 years although the contract had 18 months to run. Former Minister Boyce ensured his golf buddy a sweet deal.

Minister Bostic is a minister in a government that promotes transparency, however, he neglected to apprise the public of the several thousand dollars taxpayers paid to James to permit a non litigious exit. The majority of Barbadians are numb to what has transpired in this one example and it makes the blogmaster very angry. How is this happening and at the same time Barbadians are being asked to hold tight?

Successive governments have mismanaged the QEH. Despite the band-aiding by DLP and BLP talking heads, what cannot be refuted is the perennial unavailability of supplies at the QEH resulting in the inability to deliver efficient health care. Individuals who can afford it will access private  health care. The upside is that some doctors in private practice are laughing all the way to the bank.

The  partisans in this forum will blame the Bees or Dees. What these partisans are blind to is both political parties continue to engage in practices that protect the political class. Unfortunately the bidding of political parties has forced the QEH and other institutions in the country to the ‘knees’. How can a people boast of being highly literate yet succumb to partisan beliefs on every issue? What is the criteria for selecting Board members and senior management? On what basis are contracts for services to the hospital issued? Is it based on a transparent tender or RFP policy?

Barbadians were promised better with the transition to Board management at the QEH. Instead there appears to have been a deterioration. The physical plant is embarrassing to look at, constant shortage of supplies compromising health delivery, low employee moral,  corrupt selection process of suppliers, inefficient decision making by administration.

Sensible Barbadians must ask the question- if we cannot efficiently manage our primary health care facility what does it say about our skill set as an educated people?

Were recommendations contained in the Richie Haynes report implemented?

  1. You have no clue what you are talking about here.

One does not have to comment on every thing to confirm what is already known.

    >

  2. Investor confidence returning
Marriott making a purchase of hotels

Watch out for the upgrades and return to positive growth

  3. @John A

How does a sale translate to growth?

  4. David i dont know everything but one does not have to be a big time financial advisor not to know when one plus one makes two sometimes as in two mistakes
Now why dont u put your opinion on the table and see how it lines up with mine
    I bet u don’t have a clue

  5. Which is why the blogmaster will not comment on the arithmetic of the transaction.

  6. @ David.

Not clear on your above question re sale to growth please clarify.

  7. @John A

Is the purchase of a hotel considered growth? Does a single transaction connote “investor confidence is returning”?

@Jennifer FA SmallOctober 18, 2019 9:58 AM “My contribution is the cleaning of QEH. Being a very large building, at least four (4) cleaning companies should be called to a meeting and given contracts to clean particular areas. This will assure that the building is kept clean and sanitized.”

The QEH has a tax payer funded housekeeping staff.

If your company is hired at additional costs to do the cleaning, what will the QEH’s housekeepers do? Or will you pay them. Because i don’t see how it can be reasonable for the taxpayers to pay housekeepers and then for the same taxpayers to pay you and three other companies.

And don’t tell me that the QEH’s own housekeepers can’t do the job. Because I am certain that their housekeepers and yours went to the same school of housekeeping, the same places where Sandy Lane and government recruits their housekeepers.

  9. Having bought bonds i have every right to comment on what i think is fair and square
However the political stool pigeon that u have grown to become u would be quick to close down any comments u perceived as negative about the agreement
    Dont forget democracy rules

  10. Those who are not financially challenged will see that the nearly 1/4 billion dollar hotels sale will mostly all pay debts that is staggering the island. No growth in that.

Neither government has ever known how to grow an economy,

… their idea of growth is sell everything to pay debts,..

…. find investors with a little liquid and a lot of greed to milk the island for concessions.

…depend on the one horse tourism…

and when financial setbacks occur, sell more state assets…AND REPEAT..

they have not yet figured out that growth starts from the bottom, not the top…lol

and they can’t even tief that idea cause they have no clue what i am speaking ..

  11. Savings Bonds were not affected by the haircut.

  12. @ David.

I heard they paid about £100m for the hotels but not sure of the market value in real terms. It’s hard to say therefore if the buyers picked it up for a steal, or if they paid a fair price, hence implying confidence in a recovery. I guess we will learn more as it unfolds. It’s a good happening for the island though as Marriott like Sandals, spend heavily on marketing and are a respected brand.

Has any news broken on why Sam Lord’s has stopped? Would love to hear the facts on that one.

Also I think the Marriott brand coming will send a message to others that we will not be giving away our beach front assets, as other well respected brands still see value in our destination. What surprised me though is that Marrriott said when they decide on which brand they will use for them they will all be all inclusive. Implies that they are going behind the Sandals client base more so than the traditional west coast market.

  13. @ GP October 18, 2019 5:34 PM

I appreciate your short outline of the growing pains of the Q.E.H. Hopefully, your outline will put the matter to rest with all -opened minded people.

  14. @John A

Agree it is a good news story albeit it is private sector money and we do not know how much will remain offshore.

This is a transparent government, we will be told the deal with Sam Lords soon?

Savings bonds did not get a haircut, because they are bald. LOL!!. I explained that the holders get their interest up front. They pay less than the nominal value of the bond.

  16. @David

Sam Lord’s story needs to be shared with us. It’s been a while now and it is important that the developments in the hotel sector are shared with all. The debt restructuring starting is also positive for us. Again they have only spoken to $500M worth of the debt so we need more info on the bigger picture here too.

Obviously you know nothing about The Cleaning Profession’ You seem to be one that thinks cleaning is just someone with a bucket (containing water & bleach) and a mop and rag. I can’t even begin to converse with you about “Professional Cleaning”. Also don’t suppose anything, for you are so wrong.

  18. John2 if u looking for good news look elsewhere Marriott is buying elegant which is a deal between two private investors
Nothing here upfront for barbados except maybe a hundred thousand dollars in taxes
Not enough to paved barbados streets and buy garbage trucks and buses

  19. At least this government didn’t have to give a wash pan of concessions to attract Marriott’s brand to Barbados.

I’ve cleaned here and over in away for Air BNB places. I am nearly 70 and I still regularly Air BNB clean here in Barbados, not because I have to, but because I enjoy it. All of those Air BNB places which I clean get the 5 star rating or whatever Air BNB customers give as a top rating. I love to clean. I am a landlady also and regardless of how difficult the economy is I always get my property rented on the first day because it is presented so clean that I get multiple people wanting to take it. Mum was a professional housekeeper on the West coast, and in the plantation sector when sugar was king. A first cousin has been a housekeeper at Sandy Lane for more than 40 years. Don’t know what they will do when she retires. In our family we are clean, and we enjoy cleaning.

Yes I know a thing or two or more about cleaning.

I wonder why people always feel the need to tell me that I do not understand.

I do understand how to clean.

I do understand how to pay taxes.

I do understand that my tax money should not be dipped into to pay multiple companies to do the job that the QEH housekeepers are paid to do and should be competent to do.

The QEH should have a head housekeeper, preferably someone with a degree in institutional housekeeping, and several years of experience whose job it should be to establish cleaning procedures; and supervising housekeepers whose jobs it should be to ensure that the standards are rigidly adhered to, and then line staff whose job it is to carry out immediate, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual housekeeping tasks.

    It ain’t nuclear physics.

  21. Well this govt had nothing to do with the sale so why would govt have to make any deals or offers on behalf of these two private investors
For peat sake dont act silly David get out of your sand box 📦 mentality
Btw i noticed that none of the big powerhouse international media giants on the internet has made mention of the agreement

One of the key sections in the Elegant sale
“Following the Acquisition, IHLC intends to carry out renovations to the Elegant hotels. Upon completion
of the planned property renovations, IHLC intends to operate all the Elegant hotels as all-inclusive
resorts under one or more of Marriott’s collection brands. In keeping with the Marriott Group’s asset light strategy, over time (and unlikely within 12 months of the Acquisition), IHLC also intends to market
the Elegant hotels for sale, subject to long-term management agreements under which the Marriott
Group would continue to manage the hotels. IHLC also intends that, upon such sale of the hotels, there
will be no material impact on the continued employment of Elegant’s property-based personnel. ”

IHLC = International Hotel Licensing Company S.à r.l., an indirect subsidiary of Marriott.

  27. john A

I think I read that debt was also included

  28. David

I am sure you will agree that Marriotts is a great vote of confidence and probably one of the biggest we can get at this time.

    !. Marriott
    2. Rockley condos
    3. Blue Horizon
    4. Apes Hill
    5. The place in St Phillip (cant remember if its the crane or someplace else)
    6. The “tool” place on d ABC Highway
    7.Sagicor St George retiment village.
    8. Ross University

All these I remember from new reports only how you arrived at only one? You don’t keep up with the news?

“Watch out for upgrades and positive growth” = thing to come in the future

David you getting slack like some of your bloggers.
no one said a sale is growth
You read and left off the “watch out for” part.

In other words, the debt restructuring done,( upgrades will come). the next phase is to return to positive growth (watch out for it).

  29. “Those who are not financially challenged will see that the nearly 1/4 billion dollar hotels sale will mostly all pay debts that is staggering the island.”

    Murdaaaaaa, de cat got pups!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

  30. Enuff….ya are a real bottomfeeding yardfowl…how much of that near 1/4 billion that ya boasting about like if it was your sale will be going into the island, what is the benefit to you or anyone else that ya talking about all this brilliance and intelligence..like u sold something….ir made got white hoax money to settle with outside crefitirs…ah thought the fake professor said they don’t have to pay outside creditors for the next 4 years…so what changed…

…in the meantime, talking about QEH, people have to be aware of these lowlifes from Afghanistan and elsewhere who are stealing dead bodies from QEH….to rob the elderly and their beneficiaries their properties…ABLED and condoned and GREEDILY HELPED by the TIEFING LAWYERS and JUDGES on the island, one judge recently appointed by Mia…….those are who will got pups shortly…when outsides authorities come and PICK THEM UP…

me…i will be laying in my bed….with POPCORN AND WINE.

  31. Wuh even a magistrate’s name and a former police inspector’s name is calling in that THEFT OF AN OLD MAN’S BODY FROM QEH……was she not recently named a judge too…or some such…..stealing dead bodies from QEH…stealing bank accounts from UK…my, my, how the criminal syndicate from bar association has grown and SPREAD…not even the dead at QEH are safe from YALL anymore.

  32. Always colluding with whites, indians, syrians etc to degrade, tief from and demean ya own people…always colluding with these same low crawling savages like yaselves to degrade, demean and DESTROY TAXPAYER FUNDED ENTITIES LIKE QEH…now the WORLD CAN WATCH YALL BEING TAKEN DOWN….finally….how yall like that.

2 recently appointed JUDGES involved…can’t deny…all the EVIDENCE IS AVAILABLE….Mia appointed both with Dale just weels ago…so what does that say. was that why they were BOTH PROMOTED…thought they had gotten clean away huh…tiefing from their own people for some Afghan tief living in London….yall really need to be WATCHED…..ya are DANGEROUS..

BTW…ah want to see yall removing the lady’s post from FB…

  33. Enuff your figmated imagination has gone wild
Marriott does not have to bow down to any of govt demands and be held hostage by govt in the same way govt is now holding Sandals hostage and as a matter of fact contractors and other buiness deals which are all stalled and tied into Beaches project
Marriott after buying Elegant can do as they dam please
Buy products from whom and where they like
Hire who they like and from where they please
The only committment Marriott will be obligated is paying taxes and with govt lowering the taxes for investors it might be pennies considering what Marriott would be getting on the books

  34. What you cannot refute is that a brand name hotel has increased its footprint in Barbados and the government didn’t have to do one damn thing.

  35. Bottom Line

This is an interesting move on Marriott’s part, especially given that they have an incredibly asset-light strategy. So they’re buying seven resorts in Barbados, renovating and rebranding them, and then they hope to manage them long term while selling the hotels to investors.

I don’t know much about Barbados or Elegant properties, but they don’t look particularly luxurious. It’ll be interesting to see if Marriott plans on turning any of these intro true luxury properties, or if we should expect them all to be mid-range..
    ……?.??.?????

The above is another point of view from another media source

  36. @John2

Did you not read that it was agreed to be a good news story?

    Blue Horizon has not started.

    Rockley has not started.

Ross we are unclear what concessions were given.

Sagicor is a case of protecting its investment in the local market.

Apes Hill we need more details to understand the net benefit.

The point here is that some of us need information to inform conclusions.

  37. Anything negative will be sure to attract your attention. You are a one trick pony.

  38. David again you are acting silly
The govt did not own Elegant so where and how and why would govt intervention be necessary
Dont know why you are acting so childish over two private investors sale
The only difference here which might be of relevance to Barbados of any great significance is the nane Marriott
Is is not as if the Ritz Carlton has landed on our shores
    Man simmer down
Read the details and realise that Marriott is investing with an intent of selling to make a profit which can satisfy their shareholder with a hope that Barbados name can do the job of serving Marriott well
    Only time will tell

  39. NO benefit to the island whatever but ignorant, backward yardfowls are so, so excited…now it turns out that government will not even realize much more than a few dollars, if any taxes from the sale, have yall no shame..lol

so excited that the international creditors will have no choice, through no fault of their own, to squeeze the most vulnerable on the island for many, many years to come…thanks to 2 corrupt governments….but the BU yardfowl is excited……”wuh ya aint see nothing yet, wait for the 2020 vision and watch muh”…lol…while a world recession is starting to loom..

so where are the benefits to the people…..oh wait, there are none, the tiefing ministers have to try to find their CUT FIRST…..so watch muh..

    #steupesss

  40. Look for me the bottom line is atrracting investors but not those of a type to use Barbados name as a source of branding their product while barbados receives no long term benefits that can help the people and serve the financial interest of the country
These two investors are getting some of what they intentions are
Marriott looking out for their shareholders
Elegant in turn getting their debts paid and less sleepless night
Barbados now have to sit wait and see how this investment plays out and what benefits it will derived from what some see as Marriott name to be a marketing strategy for Barbados

  41. This Marriotts matter can be discussed on the Adrian Loveridge blog below,

  42. The issue of bad management of the QEH is serious given the significant allocation in the national budget. The time has come to hold people accountable. This blogmaster is aware of the racket involving overpricing by suppliers because of relationships with politicians. We continue to support these people while the politicians laugh all the way to the bank.

  43. Ok will do

  44. But what is going to be done about it, every taxpayer funded ENTITY….has THIEVES in KEY POSITIONS, all placed there by ministers and politicians, same thieves ripping off the island and people and reducing everything to degradation.

It is a near damn miracle that everything has FINALLY BEEN EXPOSED TO THE WORLD….after decades.

They are all so dangerous…they have extended their criminal reach to foreign countries that are only now being made aware…….those can be dealt with for sure..

  45. Impotence!
That is why they would flog all manner of ‘esoteric’ subject to death but ignore the vile and repugnant behavior of professional.

Impotence, and an acceptance of the fact that matters that impact on their daily lives are out of their control.

@Waru, your 4:30 a.m post may be lacking in information but it is troubling.

Troubling in that no matter the name of the lawyer, there always appear to be a stench or dirty trail that surfaces afterwards. Troubling in that how no matter how educated we claim to be, we always seem to be tools in the toolbox of others.

We would rob our brother and sister of their ‘property’ and if we cannot rob them, then we would cheat them for a fee and give their inheritance to others. It is as if we are determined that some should have and others should be without.

I can imagine some of these lawyers beginning their studies with the thought of helping the common man and battling injustice wherever it is found. Somewhere, between firs year at college and ‘hanging up their shingles’ innocence is lost; the crusader becomes a marauder; who they saw as a victim is now seen as prey.

Yes, was can talk money, transexuals, homosexuals, BERT, FOI (sunhine laws), integrity legislation but all of this is window dressing if we are unable to repair the spokes in our wheel. Barbados is going nowhere until professionals start acting in an ethical and profession manner,

Hal calls us a failed state. I do not believe we are a failed state, but the rot is so pervasive that I doubt if we can truly recover. Two men on a plane that is in a nosedive – one can see only the debris on the ground, the other is hoping for a miracle.

  46. David BU i want to congratulate Ms Mottley and the Government of Barbados along with White Oak for vetting an agreement with the international creditors. In my opinion it can only get better from here. I was waitng for this breaking news from the bajan canadian Hants but alas since it is a positive and not negative we will not see it.Mariposa your feeble attempt at trying to downplay this is typical of the dem yardfowls this is not your try a thing Dems.I cannot hear anything from the overseas bellyachers like SSS,Baje,Gazzerts,Austin and others the cat got wannu tongue. What you all gonna find to bellyache about next?Things will start to improve going forward whether you all want it or not.

  47. “I can imagine some of these lawyers beginning their studies with the thought of helping the common man and battling injustice wherever it is found. Somewhere, between firs year at college and ‘hanging up their shingles’ innocence is lost; the crusader becomes a marauder; who they saw as a victim is now seen as prey.”

Unfortunately Theo…one lawyer told me point blank…these thefts if estates from the vulnerable and unaware black bajans, the elderly, sick, dead, dying, young, UNBORN…. ALL STARTED when the older lawyers, most now DECEASED, WERE STILL IN SCHOOL IN UK and other jurisdictions…..they were robbing BENEFICIARIES etc BEFORE they even got law degrees ASK SIMMONS, ET AL…. .as far back as the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and COMING FORWARD….

it is now a well entrenched criminal syndicate, so only few would start out as crusaders for the powerless…most would get caught up in the syndicate…if they want to survive…few do.

  48. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Marriott is doing with regard to their running light approach on non performing assets like buildings. They are not the first or the last to do this. If you recall cable and wireless sold their building and rented it back as have many other companies on the island.

The amount tied up in real estate In Today’s world does not directly return an investment but is extremely capital intensive. So it is better for many companies to sell their buildings and rent back hence freeing up that capital for expansion.

No doubt an international property company will acquire the asset when the time comes and Marriott will then lease it for 30 years or some such deal.

Excellent move by them as hopefully they use the capital they get from the sale to further expand their operation here.

  49. It was easy really…change the names on

    Wills

    Conveyances

    Deeds of Gifts

    Title DEEDS

    A cake walk.

Substitute those victim’s names with their own, family, BRIBERS or friends……and voila…OFFSHORE EVERYTHING…they have been offshoring since the 1940s when the bar was created…check the names who created the viper’s pit for a bar and ya will get an idea how deep this criminal syndicate has extended their tentacles and for how long.

The victims never knew what hit them and were effectively GAGGED for decades, they died not knowing..

  50. David 528am

Some of us may need more information to come to a conclusion – that’s ok no problem with that. Some of us don’t need more info to see that confidence is returning.

Whatever reason Sagicor is investing for, the point they are investing a lot of money.

If Ross got concessions or not – they are investing

Blue Horizon and Rockley may not have “broken ground” as yet – but there is a lot of planning and work/investments that goes on before you break ground. Even just the purchase of the hotel plant at blue horizon is an investment.
