Those who suggest that marijuana is only harmful, maybe you should ask them whether they have any of the 100,000 substances in their own house, and in common usage, which have all kinds of deleterious effects.
That Lucas or anybody else would, on balance, fly into the face of the preponderance of scientific evidence, as ever emergent, represents forms of quackery inconsistent with the mean, tens of thousands of double-blind studies.
And yes, marijuana when smoked regularly has been shown some harmful affects worse than tobacco, for example, but to delude one’s self that the downside outweigh the upside is in and of itself lunacy. We are not limited to just smoking it.
Lastly, we were not aware that Lucas’ academic work covered this area. That you should trot him out all cladded in his white gown as a narcotics expert is highly misleading.

The problem we keep hitting because so many people still smoke and long time smoking of marijuana or anything is very unhealhy…but some are still unable to process in their minds that the medical BYPRODUCTS of marijuana is far removed from what has already been cemented in their minds…

The main problems with marijuana consumption in Barbados at present are the criminal activities with associated violence and the justice system related matters (policing, prosecution and incarceration of offenders). The decriminalisation of recreational marijuana may (almost certainly) alleviate many of these issues. The secondary problems with marijuana consumption are the psychiatric and psychological issues among vulnerable persons (i.e those under 25 years of age and persons predisposed to mental health issues before marijuana use). Decriminalisation of recreational marijuana use may (but not necessarily) cause an increase in these problems.
I therefor support decriminalisation of marijuana use but only if there is a associated public health program of information of the possible negative problems along with prohibitions similar to that with tobacco and alcohol
use e.g no smoking in enclosed public spaces, no sale to minors etc. There will also be an urgent need for an expansion of the mental health related treatment infrastructure.
Now the promotion and development of MEDICAL marijuana in Barbados is a risible pipe dream and really just a precursor to the decrimalisation of RECREATIONAL marijuana use. Barbados does not have the land space, water supply, agrononomic or pharmaceutical know how to develop a viable medical marijuana industry. At best we will be just consumers of marijuana derived medicines manufactured elsewhere (e.g Canada). So good luck with that.

Let the government decide for instance to decriminalise buggery via a mere law, as is being proposed by some here for marijuana, and Mottley would be labelled more Mugabe and dictator. For my part, I don’t rate referenda; once the science, ethics, human dignity etc is compelling, amend and leh we go.

The leadership move is a legalization of cannabis and all its byproducts. The Bill should be the standards and how they are met and controlled. Regulation. And the duties and taxes to be levied.

What referendum what!
Was the criminalization of the use of the plant put to a referendum before being passed in Parliament by a bunch of colonial-minded lackeys?
The question which ought to be posed in any referendum is:
If those who are- currently and conveniently- against the decriminalization of the cultivation and consumption of marijuana would be influenced into handling the cannabis plant in any form -whether in its propagating or smoking- should marijuana be given ‘legal’ status just like tobacco or alcohol.
Why are we placing the use of that God-given plant called Cannabis Sativa squarely within the sinful context of ‘SMOKING’?
What about the uses of the plant other than its so-called medicinal advantages?
What about its culinary benefits?
How about its use as a nutritional supplement in animal feeds instead of the widespread use of antibiotics and growth hormones?
And the list goes on; especially where the opportunity to save foreign exchange is concerned instead of having to sell what’s left of the family silver (young people patrimony) to feed the beast called imported conspicuous consumption.

I fully agree with you that Barbadian society and economy has fallen decades behind the other West Indies. The only thing that currently works in Barbados is the midday nap of the 30,000 civil servants.
But salvation is at hand. However, it is associated with certain sacrifices. We will soon see a massive investment of mighty Hindu overlords from the new Caribbean Eldorado called Guyana. They will – also against the will of the native Barbadian Taliban (I think here for example of the ISO Taliban) – introduce casinos, adult entertainment, legal soft drugs and shooting clubs on the island. They do not need a referendum and no local politicians, because they have the money, the power and the assault rifles to enforce their plans.
Barbadian men, get acquainted with the Vaseline, so that it doesn’t hurt so much the first time. The local elite must finally realize that the patriarchal, clerical, hypocritical social model has outlived itself. We need fresh ideas, no lying Sunday speeches by pastors, no oppression of women and minorities.

August 31, 2019The Medicinal Cannabis Industry Bill has been postponed until Parliament recommences after the summer break.
Leader of Government Business Santia Bradshaw asked that the Bill be sent to the Select Committee for further review this morning in Parliament after Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Indar Weir had led off debate on the Bill.
The move was welcomed by Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PdP) Reverend Joseph Atherley, who claimed it as a victory for the party.
“Government today conceded to the call from the Parliamentary Opposition that Parliamentary debate on the controversial marijuana bill be postponed and become subject to public scrutiny by process of Parliamentary select committee,” the PdP said in a statement.
“When Parliament convened this morning, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the P.D.P. Joseph Atherley again pressed Government to defer the debate.
“Despite protestation from Leader of Government Business, the Honourable Santia Bradshaw, and following vehement and strident criticism in the media of the PdP’s position to defer the debate by Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir who dismissed Atherley’s call as folly, Government ultimately conceded to the Leader of the Opposition position on the matter and postponed the debate after Minister Weir’s lone contribution,” it added. The Opposition spokesperson on Health & Wellness is making some rather excellent points on the current administration’s proposal to create a legal framework for the production, importation and use of medicinal l marijuana.
He has certainly done his homework and has exposed this government for its hypocritical approach to this whole bogus medicinal marijuana thing.
How could this administration get behind the scenes and allow the incorporation of companies since last year to deal in the medicinal marijuana business when there was no legal framework to execute such a public policy?
Do the business plans of the recently incorporated but proactive bloodsuckers include the duty and tax free importation of processed cannabis earmarked for the pharmaceutical sector?
Is the local longstanding Carlisle Laboratories going to corner the market at the expense of the Rastafarian community?
