The following was received from a concerned parent- David, Blogmaster
My daughter suffers from back pains.
In January this year, my daughter was planing on inviting the Labour Department to assess work conditions. She raised this with me and I advised her to write them first which she did.
The issue was about inappropriate chairs which repeatedly broke while sitting on and ensuing back pains which are aggravated. Management discussed the issues raised and attempted to resolve same.
Subsequently when a replacement broke the Supervisor told her she’ll have to sit on the floor until they find another.
I got involved. I called and asked why they would want their Staff to be physically uncomfortable and consequently emotionally unsettled from the fear of falling and becoming injured. The Supervisor and Senior Manager assured me that they always replace the chairs and that they were ergonomically fit. My daughter is a full sized lady. They advised that they had just sourced a new chair, weight appropriate, and it would be at the incumbents desk before she reported for work the next day.  Indeed this was so but with the same kind of frail armless chair.
My daughter has been seeing a Physio Therapist for this discomfort and recently she recommended that my daughter visit an Occupational Therapist who would visit and assess the physical work area.
This was done and the Therapist called the General Manager’s Office at Crucible a number of times, weeks ago to make an appointment to visit the Plant. One week after that first call the Manager’s Assistant returned her call. The Therapist was by then preparing for overseas travel but is expected to visit Crucible on her return.
Last week the General Manager of Crucible met with my daughter and in the discussion informed her that they have sourced a new and appropriate chair and will have it in place shortly. He stated that she was a producer, a valued employee etc and that he didn’t want to loose her. He further stated that should the chair still not be adequate Crucible will give her the option to resign and the firm will pay her Severance.
The chair has not yet arrived.
My daughter reported for work today June 7, 2019 and was handed a Severance letter with two weeks notice, a cheque covering the period to June 27, 2019, two weeks vacation pay, years severance calculations and a completed Unemployment Benefits Form.

My daughter was employed on a monthly basis but Crucible paid fortnightly. Therefore it should be one month’s notice.
Today being June 7th already begins the month and the Labour Law is …”one month or part thereof”. Therefore Crucible should know that she should be given one month’s notice from today and the vacation should begin after that period.
#3 She was appointed in October of 2015. Therefore Crucible should know that she should be paid for three years and nine months ( at end of June).
#4 She was denied the opportunity to try the “new fit chair”.
#5 The Therapist hasn’t yet visited to determine whether the furniture; desk and chair are appropriate or indeed other items or issues relevant to occupational health.
It would appear that Crucible ditched the cargo rather than be found wanting.
Having been injured, she has been paying for her therapy which has to be continued.This is contemptible.
My daughter has strong supportive and capable parents but what about all the other employees, especially those plus size ladies, who do not have the level of financial, emotional, legal and academic support?
These firms – Informatics and Offshore –  without Union representation have a history of exploitation, discrimination, breeches and disregard for the Law.
The Labour department should be visiting and assessing these firms regularly while having interviews with employees to know their grievances; not only talking to employers.
Further, employees when relieved of their tenure (justly of course) should not then have to be embroiled in arguments and actions to get their just dues. It should be a clean amicable divorce.
This is totally abhorrent, despicable, Illegal and unethical.

  5. I was one of the fools who was distracted by the suggested entertainment on Instagram.
    I could not comment because I was one who saw this as a personal matter and not of national importance.

    Gut at 11:49 the person returned and launched what I consider as a personal attack on every Barbadian.

    How dare she mention that foreigners must and should abide by our laws?
    How dare she state that she will not allow herself to be victimize; not allow herself to be abused and remain silent?
    How dare she to believe that because foreigners cannot do this nonsense elsewhere that they should not be able to do it here?
    And to top it all off, she seem to believe that we should have access to our beaches because other countries protect their shoreline.

    I can imagine my first day on the job and hearing “Welcome to The Crucible”… I think I would faint.

    Do you remember when the drug boat with the drug name (Ecstacy)* got busted how we had apologists running out to proclaim the innocence of the skipper. That is how we do things here.

My last name could be Clarke and got family that lastname is Jones. At d end of the day we all family. You dont know whats really going on so just shut the fuck up . You run your business and i bet you dont treat your employees badly or take them for a joke. ( well i hope). Alot of these comments were posted with hate towards the past employee because she also kept to herself , was a great producer , won lots of competitions and alot of ppl didnt like that.
    Now i have not been there as long as her but i will say its not a bad place to work but the Management needs sum tweaking. I also honestly dont think people shud be penalised for being sick or given certified sick leave, especially wen its islandwide or very contagious. The chairs are very uncomfortable for alot of ppl in there that are less that 200lbs so its not about the girl weight. As @hant would have posted proper office chairs suited for long hours and some which can hold up to 400 or 500lbs.

    Hope that this is not the same mummy that did not send her child to school regularly, then gave the Ministry of Education grief because she wanted the child to go to QC the school nearest to where she lived, instead of to St. Lucy according to marks gained in the exam.

    If so the Ministry of Education resolutely refused to be bullied.

    Maybe if parents spent a bit more time parenting their children, then they would not have to get their panties in a knot trying to parent their young adults.

    I think you and your parents did not think through this whole thing before hand as this seems to be a reflex to her being sent home, in my opinion this has a negative spin off as it has placed her in the spotlight in a way she would not have like. You guys could have handled this differently instead of posting to social media I mean this is the internet once its out there it can’t be taken back, as with the old photos and videos of her have also now resurfaced. You have placed a negative light over the company and as you guys said it’s an offshore company who’s to say clients have not gotten wind of this post and decide to take the business away then you have hundreds of employees out of work. These offshore companies keep us employed in a sector where jobs these days are hard to come by take a look at NCO when they left Barbados a large number of people were out of work . I think she was more than fairly treated and not discriminated against as they are trying to make everyone believe the fact that the general manager personally got someone to purchase and install arm rest for her to make her more comfortable says that she was not terminated for he weight as much effort was made to keep her as comfortable as possible. And as her letter states her position was made redundant so should space in her department become available she would be rehired as has been done many times in the past. I just wish you guys would have thought this through before using this means to get your message across I know of employees who thought they were wrongfully dismissed and they sought legal advice and were rehired couldn’t you guys have done the same instead of going about it this way. Who’s to say we turn up for work one day to see a notice on the door and the doors locked and the company moved to another country many of us have children to feed and homes to run and have been happily employed here for years. I think this was a bratty selfish move.

    3 my daughter holds an Associate Degree as well as other semi-professional qualifications. We and those who chose and can afford itt has gone so far past 8.30 – 2.30 x 5 days week school.

We, my daughter and I [just for u since u like to teach], did not issue a letter or any instrument identifying us or proclaiming a false position.     The posting was to bring awareness to a trend not only at Crucible but across the offshore sector.
    I have acheived that objective.

    If I was among the owners of Crucible Internation I would sue you as you are not your daughter and they never engaged you in employment or as an independent contractor.

    You have displayed no leadership skills however what you have displayed is emotionalism and jumping the gun.

    Leadership would have started by displaying your real name on Barbados Underground since you choose to expose the company Crucible International and hiding behind an alias purporting to do the right thing.

    So that you know I am not a Lawyer, I am however an educated black man with children who would not have gone down this path as I care about their welfare and would have pursued the relevant channels.

    There is always and always will be collateral damage. My intention was and is to hughlight matters that are persisting in areas that affect not merely me but many. This issue is not just this firm but many.
    I am sorry that you feel it should have been handled under a bushel and I respect your perspective and position but I dont think you (and the nay sayers) quite understand the details or intricacies of this particular case.
    Unfortunately this is how social media works. With freedom of expression, ppl go off ranting and mud slinging. Notice that the firm has not, themselves, made any statements but those who remain at the firm has elected to bring old experiences to this discourse, all of which are irrelevant and to air what was done or given or promised whem they were never involved in any of the discussions.
    Since you were nit involved in any of the before discussions and are only reading and referring to these posts you cannot rightly claim that the firm did enough or too much.
    If you fear being on the line start thinkung new skills and proprietorship because that behaviour in the new irder of the day.

    IF the 2 points you listed are the only grounds that the firm could and should sue, then Crucible, who has been engaged in talks with ME (sleep on that Mr Educated) has no grounds to sue me. I am very amused that so many are of the dim view that I can’t intercede on the lady’s behalf.
    Was it you talking about displaying real name? Did your mither actually name Barbados 2019? Give me a break.
    I’m hard pressed to think that I would think that Crucible wouldn’t know who I am. There is only one such letter as I posted.

    My apologies if it appears that I made a personal attack on Barbadians. though this sounds “tongue in cheek”
    I cannot afford to think like that.
    Who are Barbadians anyway? Last time I count there were 35,000 ppl from Guyana here, plenty from Trinidad and Jamaica, the other islands, those from Germany and England, etc. (though employers)
    I posted the second time to reiterate that this was not only about my daughter. She’s nit the only plus size employee there with broken chair challenges and my daughter is nit the first that was wrongfully dismissed under guise of low volume business (others went to Labour and were re-enstated). We are out, we stay out; not interested.
    It was to share a trend that is little known outside the industry or Labour Department.
    From the number of comments here, some from within Crucible, and the many I know who read but never comment and those on my facebook account, I have acheived the objective.
    My hope is that these firms become better partners in this employment relationship. produ

    I can’t believe you though; being a man and all.
    How could you with conscience n commonsence state that the child hardly went to school and scored 15% and I wanted her where she didnt score for?
    My daughter went to a Private school (ranked 3rd at that time) and had perfect attendance; the certificate is on our wall.
    The school the Ministry offered first was that which they claimed had space. I refused telling them that’s not for the likes of us. What you don’t know is that the same Chief Education Officer under new government offered the school in St Thomas (as per the attained score) I refused that also because having been to Atlanta during the passa passa, I learned about home schooling (very common now v public schooling) and told the Ministry we were not interested since none of their public schools was comparable to the environment she was accustomed to at the primary school. The fact that the Ministry never brought truency charges speaks volumes.
    There is Power, then there is puss.
    As I said she now holds an Associate Degree etc. and she keeps moving on.
    I Captain my ships.
    Money talks and Bullshit walks.
    Thanks for rehashing this dead horse. Everyone now knows what became of that little girl locked out of the system. But she wasn’t wasn’t the only affected by that glip and offered a school that wasn’t even on their list of choices (the reason again for printing in the press then). But she is the only one of that lot that doesn’t have such a school on her Certificates or have to list such a conkawa school (with a stigma) on her Resume. Power to people.
    She proudly states “I WAS HOME SCHOOLED”
    How’s that for captaining a ship through rough seas? Be as simple and as mean as you want to be, the laughs on you and all who wanna be like you.

    Legacies of colonialism…. and none of these mean contributors were Hindu, Muslim, Bhuddist, Zoroasterian or Indian or Chinese, or Lebanese
    I couldn’t believe the level of simpleness and fear. Subtle intimidation. But above all the fear in an Independent people to challenge unjust actions/status quo. Men, of all people saying (in essence) that they wouldn’t for fear of/concern for children’s welfare. What is a welfare/life worth if one has no rights? If one has to turn the left cheek still/again/always.
    Its like man still having to look on and can do nothing as the planter vigorously and sloppily foops his woman and daughter in his presence. Cha man!
