The Grenville Phillips Column – Engineer Paul Clifford

I recently had the privilege of working with Paul Clifford, a competent Engineer who died last week after falling through a roof. Carrying out inspections on suspect roofs, under cracked bridges, and in structurally damaged buildings is the life of a structural engineer.

The personal safety-risk of performing structural inspections is very high, but completing the inspection and providing a safe solution for contractors to follow is part of the calling. Engineers cannot send a contractor, artisan or labourer to do their inspections, they must put themselves in harm’s way and do them themselves.

Engineering is more than a profession. It is an obligation to work conscientiously to solve foreseen problems to prevent harm to the public. It normally includes Engineers risking their own lives. If an Engineer has done their work well, then the public will be oblivious to the magnitude of the harm that has been avoided, and the danger to which the Engineer willingly exposed themselves. Therefore, no manner of appreciation is expected.

In 1907, Rudyard Kipling provided a glimpse into the obligations of Engineers, in his poem, the Sons of Martha. It is generally unknown outside of the Engineering community. With Paul’s passing, perhaps it is time for the public to be aware that when an Engineer dies doing inspections, it is no mere accident – but a sacrifice on behalf of others.

The Sons of Martha

The Sons of Mary seldom bother, for they have inherited that good part;
But the Sons of Martha favour their Mother of the careful soul and troubled heart.
And because she lost her temper once, and because she was rude to the Lord her Guest,
Her Sons must wait upon Mary’s Sons, world without end, reprieve, or rest.

It is their care in all the ages to take the buffet and cushion the shock.
It is their care that the gear engages; it is their care that the switches lock.
It is their care that the wheels run truly; it is their care to embark and entrain,
Tally, transport, and deliver duly the Sons of Mary by land and main.

They say to mountains, ‘Be ye removed’. They say to the lesser floods, ‘Be dry’.
Under their rods are the rocks reproved – they are not afraid of that which is high.
Then do the hill-tops shake to the summit – then is the bed of the deep laid bare,
That the Sons of Mary may overcome it, pleasantly sleeping and unaware.

They finger death at their gloves’ end where they piece and repiece the living wires.
He rears against the gates they tend: they feed him hungry behind their fires.
Early at dawn, ere men see clear, they stumble into his terrible stall,
And hale him forth like a haltered steer, and goad and turn him till evenfall.

To these from birth is Belief forbidden; from these till death is Relief afar.
They are concerned with matter hidden – under the earthline their altars are;
The secret fountains to follow up, waters withdrawn to restore to the mouth,
And gather the floods as in a cup, and pour them again at a city drouth.

They do not preach that their God will rouse them a little before the nuts work loose.
They do not teach that His Pity allows them to leave their work when they damn-well choose.
As in the thronged and the lighted ways, so in the dark and the desert they stand.
Wary and watchful all their days that their brethren’s days may be long in the land.

Raise ye the stone or cleave the wood to make a path more fair or flat:
Lo, it is black already with blood some Son of Martha spilled for that:
Not as a ladder from earth to Heaven, not as a witness to any creed,
But simple service simply given to his own king in their common need.

And the Sons of Mary smile and are blessed – they know the angels are on their side.
They know in them is the Grace confessed, and for them are the Mercies multiplied.
They sit at the Feet – they hear the Word – they see how truly the Promise Runs:
They have cast their burden upon the Lord, and – the Lord He lays it on Martha’s Sons.

So…..whatever happened to safety harness, other protective gear and will Innotech be held liable since they claim to be ISO certified…that type of safety neglect is grounds for losing ISO certification……

    Translation…to be sorted out…

    http://www.nationnews.com/nationnews/news/238955/apology

The Nation Newspaper has since learned that, contrary to what was reported, Innotech Services Ltd. is not involved with the project at Portvale Factory and the company had no knowledge of the project or the works before the accident.

We have also since been informed and accept that while Mr Paul Clifford was a valued senior project manager and longstanding employee of Innotech Services Limited, and was here on a valid work permit obtained by Innotech Services Ltd., Innotech Services Ltd had no knowledge of any relationship between Tarico Building Inc and the deceased.

On another note….very credible sources are complaining about these heads at QEH…parasites in the lives of taxpayers….whose families are getting precedence and special treatment over other sick and suffering patients at QEH….cause they all use the same, backward, lowlife nepotism of…”do u know who i am”…..so everyone else has to wait and die…because these lowlife’s relatives have large salaried positions at QEH….yall will never learn, hence ya will stay miseducated, uneducated, uppity, arrogant, backward and useless.

And ya will always be victims sold out by ya own useless black leaders…..if ya do not wake up and change the destructive, unproductive habits and practices.

You are a clown. This man worked for Innotech for 10+ years in Barbados and apparently all over the Caribbean. Innotech obviously had not involvement in the project. Here’s a few questions:-
    1. How did Terico get on the job without a tender?
    2. How is it Terico didn’t have insurance and were not ask to provide any by BAMC?
    3. How is it Terico don’t have a formal written contract with BAMC?
    4. How is it Terico got a 50% deposit payment without providing BAMC with an invoice?
    5. How is it the BAMC staff don’t know anything whatsoever about Terico?

Didn’t Barry Gale QC file a criminal complaint against Mrs. Worrell regarding missing money from a client’s account at his lawyer firm? I am just check, I don’t know and I don’t want to rely on rumours.

Ya see the problem here is, he worked for Innotech, they even got him his work permit all the time ….so when everything goes sideways….like it obviouly has….guess whose name is upfront…..and am sure there is more to come…because i can just see what u posted turning into an even larger pile of shit….because it is so believeable…,that is just how these asses operate..

You will never be able to prove anything beyond the simply co-incidence that he worked for Innotech, because GOB and BAMC have now admitted finally that Innotech Construction is not the contractor, was never the contractor and simply has never ever involved been involved in the project at Portvale..

I know it sounds like nitpicking, but inquiring minds still want to know why Innotech applied for a work permit for him, yet he…maybe….was contracted out to Tenrico…hope ah got that name right……which sounds like just another shadow company, owned by crooks, which government is also in bed with…as per usual…

if he has a permit issued by immigration to work for Innotech his first day is spent at Portvale working or visiting with another company ………can you see where this is going….ah hope so cause now it is looking like Innotech hoodwinks immigration…using work permits..

It is not a matter of proving anything, it is the optics and government’s history of corruption with equally corrupt companies AND their owners…….and everyone will now run from paying compensation to the deceased dude’s family….as is their pattern…

Someone has to be held accountable….if Innotech is not liable…someone else is.

May he Rest In Peace is endorsed by de ole man notwithstanding the incredible idiocy of inspecting a roof without a safety belt.

But you and Woodbourne have posed some insightful questions

Who is the officer that authorized his presence on the roof at this time?

I can’t see how a man, irrespective of his colour, entering a property and climbing on its roof WITHOUT SOMEONE KNOWING ABOUT IT!

Though, now I think about it, I do remember a white man walking into a shooting gallery out by Sears? In St Philip and renting a gun and den killing heself

Thankfully he did not do their accustomed Columbine actions, which is “kill dem all befo killing heself!”

Imagine that the only way this matter is going to be properly ventilated NOTE THAT I DID NOT SAY INVESTIGATED, is as a sidebar on Barbados Underground arising from the disgraced leader of Solutions Barbados

Just goes to prove that even a liar can bring forth truth sometimes…

so what is wrong with young black people earning loads and loads of money…i know young people not even 30 years old….making over 15-20 thousand a month…so why can’t young black people meet that salary scale in Barbados…why must they always be paid starvation wages…slave wages…while their lowlife leaders keep them thus marginalized and disenfranchised…cause they want all the money…including bribe money for themselves…..and enrich pondscum at the expense of these young black people…

First of all…bajans need to love and respect THEMSELVES…and not u as**holes with titles or the minority racists

………your black politicians, ministers, lawyers…CANNOT UNDERSTAND A WORLD WHERE THEIR OWN BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT SLAVES…ARE NOT DEPENDENT ON EVERYONE ELSE…….AND ARE WEALTHY…..

….the one thing ya can be sure of is if some other scam presents itself to rob the treasury and pension fund for the known lowlife’s to benefit..each and every house negro will jump on board………and that is the reality….she will quicker find a way to disenfranchise the people who elected her…..because that is all she knows…

    http://www.nationnews.com/nationnews/news/238969/bishop-granted-bail

“Bishop Ann Rose, the woman who said she was trying to cast demons out of a 12-year-old girl, and Kim Bridgette Christabel Thompson were granted bail after appearing in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court earlier this afternoon.
    ..
Rose, 77, of Roumaika House, Dayrells Road, Christ Church and 60-year-old Thompson, of Maxwell Coast Road, in the same parish denied assaulting a 12-year-old girl on March 10.

However, the girl’s 65-year-old grandmother, Magdalene Agard, of Jemmotts, Durham, St Lucy, pleaded guilty to assaulting the child. The housekeeper also admitted to being a person over the age of 16 and having charge of a child, that she willfully exposed the child in a manner likely to cause injury to her health.

Agard was granted $3000 bail and a pre-sentencing report was ordered on her. She returns to court on May 29.

Rose and Thompson were also released on $3 000 bail, and ordered by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant to stay away from the complainant. They will return to court on September 4. The charges stem from a video which went viral. (RA)”

Are you saying that these immigrant workers were to be paid a given daily wage of “x” on the books

They were however paid “x” minus “y”.

And he and unnamed parties illegally participated in the kickbacks “y”?

Do you have any evidence, written or otherwise of these transactions?

Certainly a video or a voice note or s letter from a worker in that predicament would substantiate your claim!!

oh well…this definitely highlights the lies in John’s lies and puts things in a better perspective and actually sounds more credible and believable…given what we know of the murderous, bullying and terrorist tactics of the british, french, spanish and portugese…..against people of African descent and they did murder many, many of the African Kings who resisted…

    https://barbadostoday.bb/2019/03/22/african-kings-and-slavery-an-account-by-sir-hilary-beckles/.

“Faced with threats either to their lives or of enslavement of themselves and their communities, many African kings and other leaders in sub-Saharan communities opted for cooperation with slave traders, and some even got into the trade themselves.

This account, recently given by University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles, deals with the issue of black involvement with the slave trade—a question with which many, including descendants of those who survived transatlantic slavery, have struggled to come to grips.

Sir Hilary, a renown historian who has authored more than 21 books, including 17 on slavery, said last Friday that when confronted by slavers backed with the military might of their European governments, African leaders had to decide whether to fight in battles they were sure to lose or cut deals of cooperation that would spare their immediate community in exchange for other ethnic groups.

He said that from the 16th Century and onwards 300 years, the average king had three choices in the face of powerful slavers: stand his ground, refuse to hand over fellow Africans, and fight – “and many of them fought and they were wiped out”; make a deal – “don’t take my people but you could take my neighbours”; or “don’t take my people but I will allow you access through my country. So, from the interior I would allow you to pass through my country on the way to the coast. I give you the access in exchange for not taking my people”.
