The health of nations is more important than the wealth of nations.

-Will Durant

Chief Medical Officer of Barbados Dr. Kenneth George was quoted in the news recently his concern about the rise of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). He singled out hypertension commonly referred to as the silent killer.

His intervention on the vexing issue of the high incidence of NCDs should give the country pause. A scan of the 2019-2020 Draft Estimates (TABLE 5) confirms what we know, taxpayers for another year will be asked to finance a significant national health budget allocation.  Several years on if an honest assessment were to be made the conclusion has to be, we MUST change our health policy. In other words, Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Minister Jeffery Bostic- the country has not only descended into the economic doldrums, please add the health of citizens.

Barbadians have enthusiastically ingested the fast food culture exported from the Great White North. There is a generation weaned on Chefette and KFC menus. A typical pastime on social media is to be on the lookout for the ‘specials. The consumption behaviour of fast food will not change anytime soon. We should expect the ramification of the addiction to remove a large slice from national budget pie.

Under normal circumstances the adage that “the most important part of solving a problem is to know” will not apply. We have crossed the Rubicon. To impose a fat tax – call it what you want – will cause a sitting government to lose at the next general election. It is that serious.

Instead we prefer to glamorize obesity and blame a busy lifestyle which does not permit finding one hour to cook a meal.

Instead we prefer to glamorised oversized men and women to justify that to engage in an unhealthy lifestyle is acceptable because we are too busy doing some irrelevant activity.

Our health is not important enough to make time. Read the excuses now!

The blogmaster is not so naive to disregard the right of individuals to do as they please within the bounds of the law. However, if the errant behaviour will increase my tax contribution there is a good argument that those intent on feeding a negative lifestyle should pay a disproportionate the tax contribution.

Yes…the Fast Food Culture from America has reached Barbados shores, but was the Bajan diet any better? Our staple diet was high in starch ( white rice and yam potatoes etc) which contributed to the high rate of diabetes in Barbados…

  2. David

I have a question: who allowed the Fast Food Establishments in Barbados? Weren’t those persons smart enough to understand the unhealthy implications associated with consuming Fast Food which has a high fat content that has been linked to certain chronic disease conditions?

  3. We wait to see what Budget Day offers next week Wednesday.

I get the sense that you are flying a kite on behalf of the ruling party.

What is the real point of this submission sir?

How expensive is a healthy lifestyle in Barbados to maintain? Why blame the obesity of Barbadians on fast foods. I read somewhere that you can eat whatever you like as long as you have a regiment of physical activity to go along with it, and are free from medical causes for obesity. Ain’t the current high price cost of living a major player towards poor eating choices in our Cou Cou land? Stop blaming fast food operations and start involving yourself in more physical activity. We are what we eat only either because we cannot eat any better or incapable of engaging in more active physical pursuits.

Why would any self-respecting society allow companies to make a profit out of selling addictive food that is causing harm to the general public. You do realise that the majority of imported chicken is suspect and some would say unfit for human consumption; and is sourced from Brazil and South East Asia.

Was it not last year that that a certain minister from the previous regime gave permission for the importation of chicken of questionable quality.

You are what you eat. The wealth of a nation is dependent on having a healthy population. This is is why it is imperative that our government pushes for legislation that would outlaw fast food restaurants in Barbados.

  6. Chlorinated chicken, antibiotics in pork and hormones in beef.

  7. In a capitalist and democratic country people have freedom of choice
Now for govt to be restricting those freedom by way of a fat tax on food is ludicrous

  8. SSS

What goes in our mouth causes the chronic conditions we are currently experiencing, and no amount of exercise will prevent someone from getting diabetes or high blood with a diet loaded with starch and sodium. A balance diet with proper exercise will prevent obesity, diabetes or hypertension if there isn’t a genetic component at play…

  9. The focus is on unhealthy lifestyle and the factors driving the behaviour. After all the long talk society pays for it.

  10. Hal Austin

Then we have to find natural sources of protein such as: peanuts, chickpeas, tufo etc

  11. David

You have to promote the benefits of eating right, but you cannot penalize people for doing otherwise … So David why doesn’t government ban cigarettes which wreaks Havoc on our healthcare system?

“I am all for a fat tax if it is going to be used for the things i suggested above. Otherwise it is a waste of time. Just a way for the government to collect more money.”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Given the expected loss in revenues arising the reduction in the corporation tax rates and the servicing of the BERT programme the government must find creatively imaginative ways to earn additional tax revenues.

So what should it be? VAT on your water bills or additional VAT on your fast food fare?

Agree that such a tax should be ring-fenced and used to help fund the public health services and clean up the country’s fast despoiling environment. Similar ring-fencing was also proposed for the sweet-drink tax but what has been the outcome.

The same way we see taxes on alcohol and cigarettes as ‘sin taxes’ being paid upfront by the consumers for their inevitable public health care needs why not put non-nutritious fast food in the same fast lane to the destination of future ill-health and a drain on the country’s public health services like your much adored QEH and polyclinics.

The blogmaster CORRECTLY OPINED THAT There are a few medical conditions which cause obesity not influenced by diet.

AND THE OLD FOOLISH KNOW IT ALL HAG AND SELF COFESSED FARE PICKER COMES TO CONTRADICT HIM BY TALKING ABOUT Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) a genetic disorder WHICH IS BY DEFINITION INFLUENCED BY DIET UH LIE?

THEN THE OTHER FOOL TALKING ABOUT BANNING CIGARETTES AND findING natural sources of protein such as: peanuts, chickpeas, tufo etc

DOES NOT THE ASS UNDERSTAND THAT IF YOU EAT PROTEIN YOU WILL MAKE ACETYLCOA

WITH OUT ACETYLCOA THERE CAN BE NO FAT MADE IN THE BODY AND THEREFORE NO OBESITY

  19. GP,

I went trying to read up on that acetyl -CoA stuff and even I who did Biology and Chemistry at A level am finding I don’t have the desire to read it. Please break it down to simple terms. I did remember that carbohydrates, fats and proteins are broken down as you said but I thought there was something I was missing judging from what was being bandied about even by the authorities. I had planned to research it but here you are so why should I?

So… you have at least one person willing to listen. I also have a big mouth and a habit of speaking to the man on the street. Trust me, they need to know.

Doesn’t hypothyroidism cause weight gain? I bet you your medical license that is does…that is if you have or had one…

I will David … but I am trying to educate your boy GP … He makes a lousy doctor….

If a lifestyle is not healthy it is obvious that is unhealthy. Wuh you telling me atall, hon bun? Sometimes you come over as a real educated kuba here, but yet the SSS love ya bad. The three main criteria for a healthy lifestyle is diet, exercise and rest. Note that the I in I ain’t say anything about sleep because you can sleep but do not get any rest. The main criteria for an unhealthy lifestyle are like two dozen different problems that can impact a persons ability to keep themselves healthy. They are stress, psychological problems associated with A,B,C,D, poverty, family life, smoking, drinking, drugs, social and state status, E, F,G, H and I. When you add up all of these things they equal to the three main things that predispose a person towards the unhealthy condition or lifestyle choice. Society pays for everything, all like now we paying for the shite the DLP did, the shite the BLP did before the DLP did shite and trying to separate the two shites from the current BLP who did shite that made us end up with idiotic DLP in seeking to find a difference.

    Lexicon

I ain’t no doctor, but starch was never a problem until now. Salt was never a problem until now. Our food choices have never been greater until now. Compare that to the old people who ate the same, pigtail, rice, breadfruit, yam, eddoes, cassava (starches) and explain how the heck most them of lived so darn long without much NCDs? They had limited food choices but ate more ground provisions. The difference is that we have so many process foods with their concentrations of all sorts of inorganic and organic food additives that we have no idea what the heck is bio-accumulating in our system to bring on NCDs. Ya think eating a pigtail could be more dangerous than a slice of process ham? The human body was not designed for specific foods namely meat consumption, but we cannot get enough of the stuff that fills us up with bad cholesterol. And lemme tell ya, every single meat base food to give ya a bit of cholesterol. The giant food industry introduced all sort of shite ingredients in the food and we lapped it up like the licorish brutes that we are (yours truly included). Do you think we were designed for meat consumption or even salt? Most, if not all foods have natural salt in them. The human body needs it and mother nature has provided it naturally in non process foods., But we cannot stomach the bland, we need taste. Its how the industry has conditioned us and stand ready to defend the shite they doing to food. However, you will be amazed at what exercise can do, especially a good sweat per day. The human body is no fool like some of us, its a regulator, and conditioned properly and up to fitness levels, removes and heals so many problems you would be amazed. I lie, Georgie Porgie pudding in pie, kiss the girls and made them cry?

  27. prednisone use to treat rheumatoid arthritis or some of the autoimmune diseases can cause weight gain…

    HOW DOES IT DO THAT?
HOW DOES THE STEROID DO THIS?
DOES IT NOT AFFECT METABOLISM AND THUS INVOLVE ACETYLCOA?
    IS THIS NOT BIOCHEMISTRY?

  28. Georgie Porgie

I am asked you if hypothyroidism doesn’t cause weight gain? Prove me wrong …I found my mistake with the overactive thyroid gland …but prove to me the an underactive thyroid gland does cause weight gain…

  40. SSS

For protein I eat fish chickpeas, nuts … Vegetables … For starch Small portions of brown and black rice and sweet potato… and all kinds of fruits without the high sugar content …

Balance diet: starch, protein, vegetable … for breakfast starch, protein, fruit …

  41. SSS

It is expensive to eat right here in the States as well …have you seen the prices in the health food section at the supermarket here?

  42. SSS

The problem is a lot of people aren’t discipline with their mouth … especially when it comes to eat … instead of eating the cookie that is loaded with sugar and whatever … why not eat a piece of fruit which it of more nutritional value than the cookie?
It is all about developing enough discipline to make better nutritional choices… Instead of eating the big bowl of white rice which impacts your pancreas negatively … why not choose a small portion of white rice, vegetables, and a piece of fish … Instead of sweet drink … Drink water …

  43. SSS

I love Dunkin Donuts coffee, but I cut it out my diet several months ago because I know the impact it would have had on my cholesterol if I had continue to use it with milk … I cut butter out of my diet as well and replaced it with olive oil …and canola oil …

  44. MILK BUTTER OLIVE OIL CANOLA OIL ARE ALL METABOLIZED TO ACETYLCOA…………THE PRECURSOR OF CHOLESTEROL DUMMY!

  45. Georgie Porgie

I do not care what your medical reseach tells you, but I know that consuming high starchy foods over time kills the pancreas … eating high starchy foods for many decades kills the pancreas … when you eat for example: a big bowl of white rice the pancreas has to shoot of enough insulin to neutralize the starch and this over time over works the pancreas … that is why nutritionists suggest that you eat small portion of rice/ potatoes etc lessen the load on the pancreas…

  46. Georgie Porgie

Along with the olive and canola oils I also eat a lot of garlic which has the properities that decrease the LDL and raise the HDL … both oils are better than Margarine though …

  48. If you pose a fat tax it may lead to more rapes ,bestiality etc because if extremely fat women are taxed then a lot more female tourists will go elsewhere because of cost causing your beach gigolos to look for something else to fill that void.

  49. It is worth repeating that what is referred to as a fat tax is levied on unhealthy foods.

  50. @DR. GP

Did you not submit a slide presentation that outline what happens to food in the digestive system? I remember most of what you said above from the presentation. It should be in the medical corner. I think it was during your diabetes teaching session.

I have hypothyroidism. Have had it for many years. Was on thyroxin, but after having a lobe removed, it more or less righted itself. Two years ago, the Dr. told me it was low. It has been getting a little lower at every 3 month test. She refuses to put me back on medication as it would increase my heart rate and I am hypertensive. Her instructions, reduce the eating or increase the activity to combat the weight gain. My choice.
