The six month old Mottley government cannot be accused of NOT making decisions. In the relatively short time since winning the government several initiatives have been promised with few started. There are private sector projects coming online- a few that have been in the pipeline before the Mottley government took up residence in Government House.

The most recent announcement by the government issued amidst the noise of the Christmas season is the plan to litter the coastline between Hastings and Paradise Beach with about twelve hotels with four receiving upgrades. What piqued the interest of the blogmaster was that areas in St. Lucy, Christ Church and St. Phillip will be identified for tourism related projects. The blogmaster suspects deals have already been cut in smoke-filled back rooms and what is left is the PR piece.

The question Barbadians must ask- are we happy continuing to pump millions in the tourism model? The way business is done in this sector requires generous concessions to be offered AND analysts agree there is significant foreign exchange leakage associated with the segment. The blogmaster is not suggesting we should neglect a sector all admit that is paying the bills. What we want to see is a different kind of investment to grow a more resilient economy.

During the Arthur administration BU posted concerns about the extent the coastline was being carved up to serve tourism development. One expects flyovers will enter the discussion at some point. Our opposition then and still relevant is that Barbados will lose its shine as a SID if we continue to morph into a concrete jungle. We are already seeing unusual changes with our coastline to suggest decisions taken are not in harmony with the environment. We struggle with implementing a waste management and efficient water system. Is it conceivable that we should be looking to ease our hand from the tourism investment mouth?

Regional governments and by extension the citizenry have demonstrated in the last twenty years a lack of innovation and creativity in the problem solving business.

    I will benefit directly as I still own property in Barbados.

    Offshore Island can be perfect location for luxury hotels and gambling casinos.

    Hotel Zone can be tied to the upgrade of Bridgetown.

    It speaks of the doctrine of reconciliation taught exclusively by Paul in verse 1

    In verse 2 it alludes to the mystery of the incarnation as taught in scriptures like John 1, Philippians 2 and especially Hebrews 2:14 et secq thus

    Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

    15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

    16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

    17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

    18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

    it speaks in verse 2 also of the fulfiled prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 that he would be our Immanuel…when he indeed did come to be with us

    it speaks also of the fulfiled prophecy of Isaiah 9:16 that he will one day come as the prince of piece

    and it speaks of the partially fulfilled prophecy of Malachi 4 that he would come with healing in his wings or the tassels of his garments

    I taught this a few years back in breaking of bread on CHRIST IN MALACHI

    I will post it here because I am sure JOHN and PIECE will appreciate this piece of exegesis, and fully understand the thought of the hymn writer in verse 3 of your favorite Christmas hymn

    here we go you dont learn this stuff in the Anglican church and other mainstream denomination

    • Malachi . 4:2. reads
    •
    • “But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings.“

    • We note that the blessing in this prophesy is promised to those who fear the Lord and are ready for His return, but who are referred to in the phrase “You that fear my name”?

    • These are the persons mentioned in the sixteenth verse of the preceding chapter, ye that look for redemption through the Messiah.

    • What /who is the “sun” to which/whom Malachi refers?

    • The Sun of righteousness is off course The Lord Jesus, the promised Messiah; the Hope of Israel.
    • We can deduce it is a metaphorical sun, a personification, because he or it has “righteousness”, a quality of character not capable of possession by inanimate objects.
    •
    “The sun of righteousness” is a title of our Lord Jesus Christ and is found in Jeremiah 23:5-6:

    “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteousness.’”

    • The One described as the “sun of righteousness” can be no other than Jesus Christ Himself.

    • The Lord is called “the LORD your righteousness” in Jeremiah 33:16. And the coming of the Messiah is pictured as a sunrise in several passages. “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you” (Isaiah 60:1). See also 2 Samuel 23:4; Habakkuk 3:4; and Luke 1:78-79.

    • “Sun of righteousness” can also be translated “son of vindication.”
    • The context concerns the Day of the Lord, the time when God vindicates His people and judges sin.
    • This vindication will be clear to all, like the bright light of the sunrise.

    • And He will have “healing in his wings.” The term for “healing” means “to heal wounds by outward application, and binding or sewing.”

    • This, then, is the bringing together of two sides of an open, gaping wound.
    • And this is a reference to salvation; for Christ reconciled mankind to God through the Cross.

    • A healing effect will infuse the earth during this time, removing the negative impact of past sins (Isaiah 30:26; 53:5). When Christ returns, God’s righteousness and peace will flood the earth (Isaiah 11:9; Habakkuk 2:14).

    God’s desire has always been to provide righteousness to those who trust Him (e.g., Genesis 15:6). On some occasions, God’s people were said to be “clothed in righteousness” (Job 29:14; Psalm 132:9; Isaiah 61:10), and here in Malachi 4:2 God’s people will see the Sun of Righteousness Himself rising over the world.

    • It’s a picture of the future millennial reign of Jesus Christ. The darkness of the Antichrist’s reign will vanish, and the light of God will take its place. It’s a new day dawning; God’s people will revel in their freedom like gamboling calves leaping from their stalls (Isaiah 65:17-25; Hosea 14:4-7; Amos 9:13-15; Zephaniah 3:19-20

    • The next logical questions are
    • what are the “wings“Malachi was talking about in Malachi 4:2,
    • and exactly how on earth do wings heal?

    • Maybe this alternative translation will help:
    • But the sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in the fringes or tasells [of his garment].
    • Still confused?

    • Well the Hebrew word Malachi uses in 4:2 “kanaph“ or “kanaf” has two meanings and could be translated wings, or fringes.

    • The Hebrew word kanaf, translated “wings” in this passage is a word that specifically means the fringe-like feathers or edges of a bird’s wing, not the whole wing. All of us have seen these fringe-like feathers in birds circling in the sky.
    • It is interesting that all though the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for wings in most passages when referring to God is kanaf.

    • kanaf is often translated “wings” but according to Strong’s concordance, recognizes a broader meaning:
    • Kanaph (kaw-nawf); Noun Feminine, Strong #: 3671
    • Wing, extremity, edge, winged, border, corner, shirt
    • Extremity skirt, corner (of garment)

    • Thus, Malachi 4:2 standing alone and in the fuller context of Malachi 3-4, may safely be translated:
    • “But for you who fear my name the sun of righteousness will arise with healing in the fringes of his robe.“

    • Support for this interpretation comes from several passages
    • The word translated, wings, is actually referring to the fringes, or tassels which were required to be on the four corners of all clothing of Jewish men, in accordance with God’s instruction in Num. 15:37-41a thus:

    • The Lord said to Moses, ‘Speak to the Israelites and say to them: Throughout the generations to come, you are to make tassels on the corners of one’s garments, with a blue cord on each tassel.

    • You will have these tassels to look at and so will remember all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. Then you will remember to obey all My commands, and will be consecrated to your God. I am the Lord your God.’”

    • In ancient Israel, men wore four-cornered outer tunics with tassels, or tzitziyot, tied to the four corners. This outer garment became known as a tallit, and eventually evolved into the more formal prayer shawl.
    • These tassels were to remind each Jewish man of his responsibility to fulfill God’s commandments.

    • In fact, these tassels are tied into 613 knots to constantly remind them of the 613 laws of Moses, of which there are 365 prohibitions (The “thou shalt not” laws), and 248 affirmations (the “thou shall” laws). The knots also correspond with the ineffable name of God, the unspoken Yahweh.

    Because they were hanging on the four corners of one’s garment, in full view of everyone, they would be a constant reminder to walk according to God’s Laws.

    • The Hebrew word we translate as Law, is halacha, and it literally means “walk.” You see, following God’s law is a daily walk, and to stay on His path of righteousness, we all need constant reminding.

    Wearing these tassels would be comparable to us wearing a large Bible on a rope around our necks.
    •
    How would we behave in public, how would we speak to others, where would be go? God intended them to be a constant reminder of His Word when he told the Israelites to wear these fringes

    • Today, Jewish keep this law by wearing a four-cornered garment as an
    undershirt. Yet, they bring the tassels out over their belt so that they can be seen. We also find the tzitziyot on the corners of the beautiful prayer shawls worn by Jewish men as an outer garment when they pray.
    •
    When deep in prayer, Jewish men will put these prayer shawls over their heads to shut out the world and be in the presence of God. This can be seen in the synagogue or at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

    • The prayer shawls are white, representing the heavens, or the dwelling place of the Lord. And, the color blue represents the Holy Spirit of God. Therefore, praying under the tallit, or prayer shawl, is covering yourself with the presence of God.

    • From biblical times, this custom was like a prayer closet, and it is likely this is what Jesus was referring to in Matthew 6:6, when He told us to get into our closet, apart from the people around, and pray in secret to the Lord.

    • The purpose of the four fringes on a garment was, and is, and still will be to proclaim the Word of the Lord, so as to remember them and perform them.

    • These tassels also came to be associated with a person’s authority.

    • In the case of King Saul, we find that David humiliated him by sneaking up to him in a cave at the Spring of Ein Gedi and cut off Saul’s tassels, a symbol of his authority. David’s men said:

    “This is the day the Lord spoke of when He said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish’…
    • Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed,
    or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord’” (I Sam. 24:4-6).

    • Why was David upset with himself? Because he understood that to steal someone’s tassel was to steal his authority.

    • Even though David did this to prove to Saul that he was not trying to kill him, the symbol of taking the corner fringe would be humiliation to Saul. This bothered David. David immediately went out of the cave and prostrated himself in humility before Saul to prove to Saul that he was not trying to kill him.
    • David said:
    “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you?’ This day have you seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my master, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe, but did not kill you. Now understand and recognize that I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life…” (I Sam. 24:8-11).
    • Everyone, including Saul, knew that David had been anointed by Samuel to be the next king, which is why Saul feared David. At Ein Gedi, David had literally taken Saul’s authority and at that point, he probably could have taken the throne from Saul.
    • But, he didn’t; rather, he let God choose the time for him to receive the throne. This act convinced Saul that David was telling the truth. David’s act of giving back Saul’s authority also reconciled the two men. Saul said: “May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today. I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be
    established in your hands” (I Sam. 24:19b-20).

    • Another example of the authority represented in the tassel is found in a passage in Ruth Chapter three, when Ruth went to Boaz to receive his blessing that would help her out of her difficult situation. She went to the threshing floor and slept at his feet.

    “In the middle of the night something startled the man, and he turned and discovered a woman lying at his feet. ‘Who are you?’ he asked. ‘I am your servant, Ruth,’ she said. ‘Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman redeemer’” (Ruth 3:8-9).

    He immediately understood and said to her: “Don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character” (Ruth 3:11). He proceeded to make every arrangement to help her, and eventually, he married her.
    • What Ruth did in asking Boaz to spread the corner of his garment over her was a symbolic way of saying she was placing herself under Boaz’s authority.

    • In Mk. 6:53-56, when Jesus arrived at the town of Genessaret, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, the men of the town recognized Him and sent word out so that many people brought all their sick to Him and begged Him to let the sick just touch the fringe of His garment. The Bible simply reports, “all who touched Him were healed” (Mk. 6:53-56).

    • These people were not healed simply by touching the fringes of Jesus’ garment in a crowd.
    • They were healed when their faith touched the power of God and the One who could heal their infirmities. It was their point of contact to release their faith to receive a touch from the Lord.
    • Surely, the place of refuge is under the kanaf of the Lord, i.e., under His Word and His authority!

    • Additional support for this interpretation comes through the account of the woman on the shores of the Sea of Galilee recorded in Matthew 9:20-22, Mark 5:25-34 & Luke 8:43-48, who came to Jesus for healing because she apparently had a gynaecological problem for many years.
    • Matthew 9:20-22, And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
    • For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
    • But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said,Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

    • Mark 5:25-34 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
    • 26And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
    • 27When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
    • 28For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
    • 29And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

    • 47And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

    • Once we understand the significance of the hem of one’s garment, *Matthew 9:20-22, Mark 5:30-31 & Luke 8:43-48 will have much more meaning.

    • According to Levitical law (Lev. 15:25), her illness rendered her unclean and it was forbidden for her to be out in public with her condition. Nor was she permitted to touch others and, therefore, make them unclean.

    • She was a desperate woman, at the end of her rope, who had spent all of her money on doctors for cures that did not work. But one day she heard that Jesus was passing by, so she exhibited great faith in her familiarity with Malachi’s messianic prophecy of Malachi 4:2 that “the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in His wings”.
    • She recognized Jesus as that Messiah who would heal and she anxiously sought Him out. She had nothing to lose. So she pushed through the crowd and came up behind him but she was not content to just pat Jesus on the back. She reached out and touched the fringes of his robe (garment) and immediately her bleeding stopped.
    • This woman touched the “border of his garment”. It is believed that she touched the “wings” of his Tallit, in faith that if he was the Messiah as spoken of by the prophet Malachi, he would then have “healing in his wings”.
    • Lets review why she wanted to touch the hem of His garment – the tassels of His tallit?

    These tassels were a point of contact she needed to help her release her faith to receive a miracle in her life.
    • What did they represent?
    • First, they represented the Word of God, which is always the place where we can find healing for all the needs in our life.
    • Second, the fringes also represented the authority of Jesus. She had heard that many people were healed by Jesus, that He taught with authority, and when He spoke, people were healed.
    • The woman had heard Jesus was the Messiah, and she probably remembered this messianic promise from the scroll of Malachi and thought, if I am to be healed, then will it be found in His wings… His tassels …the fringes of his garment? By faith, she reached out and touched the fringes of his garment, and was healed.
    • She had heard
    • She took the bold step to exhibit faith
    • Her faith and understanding of the prophecy was so powerful, that it even amazed Jesus!

    “Who touched me?” he says! He says he felt “virtue” go out of him into who touched him.
    • The word “virtue” is defined as “moral excellence; goodness; righteousness” and “effective force; power or potency”.
    • Jesus says: “Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace”.
    • Healing power emanated from Jesus when she touched the fringes of his garment.
    • When a paper napkin touches water, it draws the liquid into itself. In much the same way, this woman, thirsty for God’s healing flow, absorbed “living water” when she touched the fringes of his cloak.

    • Jesus truly is the fulfillment of all prophecies about the Messiah. And now, in our present day, the prophecies that he gave us about the end times are being fulfilled as truth
    •
    • But for you who fear my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go forth leaping like calves from the stall.
    • When John the Baptist’s father prophesied in Luke 1:78, he alluded to this verse and said that with the coming of Jesus the day was dawning from on high.
    • The sun of righteousness was rising. And he has been rising all over this world ever since. And one day his rise will reach its noonday brightness and he will appear in glory and the final division between the believing and unbelieving will be made.

    • We may not get too deep into the theology today, because of the lack of time.
    • Also I want to go through the exercise of doing a topical study.

    • We were taught to ask questions about the topic under 8 headings, and try to answer these questions.

    • It seems that the reconcilor- the one doing the reconciling seems to have a big gift, or something of great value to present to the reconcilee- the one being reconciled.
    • Also, the offender does not reconcile himself, but the person whom he has wronged, is the one who makes suitable amends or reparation….. and invites the offender to receive the arrangement he has made for reparation

    • Did you see that coming through in our examples?
    • 2-WHAT?
    • WHAT is reconciliation?

    The DEFINITION OF RECONCILIATION
    • Reconciliation is an important concept in the doctrine of salvation, and one of the central concepts in Christianity.
    • We could call it a peace treaty initiated by God, because reconciliation results in peace with God, because reconciliation is above all a gift that man “receives” by grace (Rom. 5:11)
    • What is the gift given at reconciliation?
    • Peace!
    • The “peace” which Christ procured for His people was effected through chastisement.
    • “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed” (Isa. 53:5).
    • Paul repeatedly notes the idea of peace, as the result of reconciliation
    • His testimony to reconciliation’s results dwells especially upon peace with God (Rom. 5:1; Eph. 2:14; Col. 1:20);
    • upon “access” to God’s presence (Rom. 5:2; Eph. 2:18; 3:12; see Col. 1:22) in place of estrangement;
    • “joy in God” replacing dread of “wrath” (Rom. 5:9, 11); and
    • assurance that “God is for us,” not against us (Rom. 8:31ff.).
    • “Peace with God”— means we are no longer the objects of His displeasure, and have no more reason to dread the Divine vengeance.
    • It is that blessed relation which results from the expiation of our sins: because Christ endured the penalty of them, we are no longer God’s enemies in the objective sense, but the subjects of His favor.
    • Every one that is reconciled has “peace with God” for His quarrel against him is ended, Christ having made God (judicially) his Friend.
    • The ground for reconciliation is the same as that of justification, that is – in Christ — in his death (Rom. 5:10), in his cross (Eph. 2:16), in the body of his flesh through death (Col. 1:22).
    •

    So what is the difference from justification? Better than making excessively sharp delimitations is the insight that we are dealing here with two concepts from different spheres of thought and life.
    • Whereas “to justify” is a religious-forensic concept, which says we are no longer guilty, “reconciliation” speaks in general of the restoration of the right relationship between two parties.
    • Reconciliation is not the same as justification. Reconciliation goes a step further. It is more than having our sins forgiven and divine justice being satisfied (justification).
    • In the pronouncements of Paul it is often placed over against “enmity,” “alienation” (Rom. 5:10; Eph. 2: 14ff.; Col. 1:22), just as in a positive sense it has the meaning of “peace” (cf. Rom. 5:1, 10; Eph. 2:l5ff.; Col. 1:2011.).
    • This is because reconciliation also has in view the removal of the enmity of unredeemed man toward God as mentioned in Romans 8:8: “the mind of the flesh is enmity against God.”
    • This idea is also seen in Col. 1:21, 22 where we read it is said of Christ: “And you, who once were estranged and hostile in mind [toward him] . . . he has now reconciled”
    • THE IDEA OF PEACE AND REMOVAL OF ENMITY ARE BOTH CLEAR
    • Reconciliation is the act of uniting parties which have been at variance. It is the putting an end to strife and changing enemies into friends.
    • To reconcile is to bring to agreement, to unite those who were divided, to restore to unity and friendship.
    • Reconciliation makes access, and fellowship possible for former enemies.
    • Reconciliation is mutual change from enmity to friendship.
    • It is mutual, i.e., it is a change wrought in both parties who have been at enmity.
    • Reconciliation is the removal of the barrier that separates man and God and replacing that hostility between man and God with peace. Reconciliation makes God our friend, and enables him to pardon and save us.
    • Reconciliation involves a changed relationship—completely changed. It means to change something inside out and upside down and right side up. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation.”
    • Reconciliation is a change of the relationship between God and man based on a changed status of man through the Redemptive Work of Christ.
    • Enmity between God and sinful man was removed by the death of Christ. Reconciliation is then appropriated by each individual sinner through Faith (Acts 10:43; 2Cor. 5:18,19; Eph. 2:16).
    • When we are reconciled to God we are “Born Again”. We were first born naturally and having made peace with God we are reconciled to God and are born again spiritually.
    • We have a new spirit as and we are now a new creature, all things are made new.
    • We are also placed into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit who will now lead us, guide us, and teach us.
    • On God’s part it denotes a change from wrath to favor; on ours, from one of contempt and opposition to loyal and loving obedience.
    • It is therefore a change from hostility to tranquility or peace, from strife to fellowship.
    • Reconciliation presupposes alienation and therefore it results from the removal of hindrance to concord, and is the act of uniting parties which have been at variance.
    • It is the putting an end to strife and changing enemies into friends.
    • Many are confused on this doctrine because they misunderstand what reconciliation means.
    • We must see that God’s being reconciled to sinners who believe concerns His official relationship and not His essential character.
    • Some believe that since He changes not ( Malachi 3:6)), it is wrong for us to suppose that reconciliation is possible.
    • They insist that to speak of God’s being reconciled unto us implies an alteration either in His affections or purpose, and that neither of these are consistent with His immutability.
    • God does not change his character at reconciliation. He changes his relationship to the reconciled!

    WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RECONCILIATION
    • And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement [Rom. 5:11].
    • Because we have peace with God we can relax. We don’t have to look over our shoulders to see when he is coming to get us.
    • So now we can rejoice in God right now, wherever we are, whatever our problems are because He has reconciled us to himself and provided a salvation for us and is willing to save sinners and bring us into His presence someday.
    • He has worked out a plan to save us because of His love for us..
    • RECONCILED FROM WHAT — TO WHAT — THEN WHAT
    • Rom. 5:9 teaches that at reconciliation we are saved FROM WRATH through him (Christ)
    • The “wrath” mentioned here is what the prophets spoke of continually in the OT. e.g in Zeph. 1:15 we read
    • : “That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness” (Zeph. 1:15).
    • The great day of wrath is what the Lord Jesus called the Great Tribulation. We will escape that day of wrath, not because we are worthy, but because we have been saved by the grace of God.
    • Paul reiterates that reconciled believers shall be “saved from wrath” in 1 Thess 5:9
    • We have been saved from the penalty of sin; He is constantly saving us today from the power of sin; and He is going to save us in the future from the presence of sin.
    • A very important thing to be clear upon in connection with reconciliation is, that it terminates upon the object and not upon the subject.
    • The offender does not reconcile himself, but the person whom he has wronged, and that, by making suitable amends or reparation.

    3-WHO?
    • Who is the reconciler?
    THE EFFECTORS OF RECONCILIATION
    • God is BOTH the Author and Initiator of reconciliation.
    • Who are the persons that need to be/ are reconciled?

    THE RECIPIENTS OF RECONCILIATION
    • Notice that there is the Godward side of reconciliation. He is the One who did the reconciling.
    • Notice that in NONE of the Scripture references cited is it ever stated that God is reconciled
    • In all other religions man propitiates or tries to please his gods.
    • But Christianity teaches that “God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself” (2 Cor. 5:19), an accomplished fact which men are urged to accept.
    • Only God can reconcile. Why is this?
    • Since the sin that separates is ours, not God’s, only God could reconcile.
    • Since God is the offended one he alone can do the reconciling
    • It is a paradox, but it is very true, that God reconciles those he recognizes up to the moment of reconciliation as enemies.
    • This is taught in Romans 5:10
    • Who is the reconciler? – God in Christ Jesus is the Reconciler.
    • God is the initiator of the peace treaty but it is Jesus Christ who is the peace maker, the mediator of the peace treaty.
    • ‘And all things are of God, who has reconciled us unto Himself by Jesus Christ
    • God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them; ( 2 Corinthians 5:18-19).
    • Colossians 1:21-22 reads that ……..
    • And you, [WE] that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death,
    – WHO? By Christ as High Priest.
    • Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
    • Through faith in Jesus Christ the entire world can be reconciled to God and have eternal life, because Christ removed the barrier between God and man allowing man to have peace with God, forgiveness of sins, and eternal life.
    • In Ephesians & Collosians we read that Christ is the Reconciler, through whom God reconciles “all things” to himself (Eph. 2:16; Col. 1:20, 22).
    • These scriptures are entirely in harmony with the great fundamental teaching of the NT that reconciliation is the work of redemption going out from God in Christ to the world, for the removal of “enmity,” for the restoration of “peace.”
    • The grand truth proclaimed by the Bible is that Christ is the all-sufficient Peace maker or pacifier for God.
    • Who are the persons that are reconciled?
    • Those who accept the invitation to be reconciled.
    • Man’s side is to receive the reconciliation
    • How can we say this?
    • Because we read in Colossians 1:20, that God has thus made peace through the blood of Christ’s cross.
    • Also Colossians 1:21-22 reads ……..And you, [WE] that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you [US] holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
    • Rom. 5:11 teaches that “We have received the reconciliation”
    •
    4- WHY?
    THE NEED OR REASON for RECONCILIATION
    • WHY does /did mankind need to be reconciled to God?
    • This question is repeated in every conception of the doctrine of salvation, because it is the central concept of Christianity.
    • Man in his sin is an “enemy of God” not only in the active but also in the passive sense of the word.
    • Man is an “enemy of God” not only – in his activity, but also in his attitude. I John 1:8 &10 teach that we both sin [activity], as well as have the sin nature [attitude].
    • The scriptures teach that unredeemed man is estranged and hostile in mind toward God” (Col. 1:21, 22) and in Romans 8:8: “the mind of the flesh is enmity against God.”

    WHY MUST MAN BE RECONCILED?
    • Colossians 1:21 teaches that we were alienated and enemies in our minds by wicked works.
    • Colossians 1:21 teaches that there is mental alienation from God as well as a moral alienation. Men are not loss because they have committed some terrible sin. The reason people are lost is that their minds are alienated from God.
    • This explains the fierce antagonism toward God on the part of the so-called intellectuals of our day. There is an open hatred and hostility toward God.
    • This explains the hatred in the eyes of men and women when we attempt to present Jesus Christ and to explain how wonderful He is and how He wants to save people. There is an alienation in the mind and heart of man.
    • Colossians 1:22 teaches that Christ reconciled us In the body of his flesh through death ….[so that he could] present you [US] holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.
    • God wants to present us “Unblameable” or “without blemish” like the requirement of the sacrificial animal in the Old Testament. God in Christ is able to present us unblameable because He took our place. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Cor. 5:21).
    • Jude 24 teaches that he can PREVENT US FROM FALLING
    • And he will PRESENT US AS FAULTLESS.
    • Note that since we cant present perfection to God and since we cant save ourselves by our works or by our character God must reconcile us or invite us or woo us to Him self!
    • 1- Sin separates God and men.
    • Isaiah 59:2 reads… But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
    • Sin has placed God and man apart from one another—all harmony between them was disrupted.
    • There has been enmity, contempt, opposition, and strife towards God.
    • This “alienation” from God and from his people (Eph. 2:12; 4:18) deepens into resentment, “enmity” (Rom. 5:10), increased by carnality and hostility to God (Rom. 8:7), expressed in rebellious wickedness: “you . . . estranged … hostile in mind, doing evil deeds” (Col. 1:21).
    • This total attitude of man needs to be removed.
    • 2- Such alienation or division necessitated a need for restoration of friendship.
    • Satisfaction had to be made for sin before peace could be restored.
    • There was a need for rebellious mankind to be restored to God’s favor.
    • 3- But the offender can not reconcile himself.
    • 4- God is the offended Party and we are the parties offending.
    • It is always the offending party who is said to be the one reconciled and not the offended One.
    • The Scriptures never says that “God is reconciled to us.” They always speak of “our being reconciled to Him.”
    • 5- Only Christ was good enough to effect the reconciliation.

    5-HOW?
    THE METHOD OF RECONCILITION
    • How are we reconciled ? By the death of Christ
    • Romans 5:10
    For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

    HOW?
    – By the blood of Christ.
    • Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
    • Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
    – Ephesians 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
    • Colossians 1:21-22 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

    And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
    • Lets briefly explain HOW this happens.
    • 2 Cor. 5:20 points out that the “word of reconciliation”………that is the gospel message goes out by whatever means to inform everyone that they should “let” themselves be reconciled to God.
    • Remember reconciliation is a thing done by God always!
    • Such people on hearing the “word of reconciliation”………or the gospel message, realize that there is from their side, a need to enter into a reconciled relationship with God.
    • They realize that instead of living as unreconciled and enemies under the wrath of God, that they should accept the peace and love of God as a gift and power, and be encompassed, governed, and led by them.
    • Note that we keep stressing that reconciliation is done by God.
    • It is a gift of peace and power given by God.
    • The reconciled person only recognizes his need and accepts the gift.

    • The peace given by God at reconciliation is part of the new relationship in which those who are reconciled may stand toward God (Rom. 5:1).
    • It also speaks of the inner peace of the heart that pervades the whole man in all his doings (Rom. 15:13), and, surpassing all understanding, keeps and restrains the hearts and minds of believers (Phil. 4:7)
    • It also gives judgment in their hearts when they find themselves in uncertainty or inner discord (Col. 3:15; cf. 2 Thess. 3:16).
    • In 2 Thess. 3:16, Paul prays that when we are prone to doubt that God will keep topping up His peace in our hearts.

    6- WHERE?
    THE LOCATION OF RECONCILIATION

    • Rom 10:9-10 teaches
    That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
    • For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

    7-WHEN
    • When does/did reconciliation occur?
    • When Jesus died on the cross?
    • When I received Him as my personal Savior?
    • Why do you think so?
    • Because of what these scriptures say.
    WHEN? While we were alienated from God.
    • Colossians 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

    WHEN? While we were yet without strength.
    • Romans 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

    WHEN? While we were yet sinners.
    • Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

    WHEN? While we were yet enemies to God.
    • Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
    • The scriptures certainly teaches
    • When reconciliation was effected by Christ and …
    • That reconciliation actually becomes ours when we believe.
    • Reconciliation, is as an act of God which took place without us and for us “when we were yet enemies” When we accept the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross by faith, we are no longer enemies of God but have peace with him…. And then we are reconciled by God to God!
    • God did not wait until we promised to scrub our faces, put on our Sunday clothes, and go to Sunday school before He agreed to do this work of reconciliation.
    • It was while you and I were in rebellion against Him, while we were doing wicked works, that He reconciled us to Himself.

    8- SO WHAT? WHAT THEN?

    THE IMPLICATION OF RECONCILIATION
    • Having heard all this discussion about reconciliation, what should we do with it?
    • What should we take home from all this discussion about reconciliation?
    • What is our CONCLUSION?
    • FOR BELIEVERS- WITNESS!
    • FOR UNBELIEVERS- WARNING!
    •
    BELIEVERS
    • According to 2 Cor 5:18 ………..
    • We have been given the ministry of reconciliation!
    • 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 teaches that ………..
    • God……..hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
    • Are we involved in the ministry of reconciliation that was given to us ?
    • The ministry of reconciliation is actually God’s call to lost men everywhere to come to Him with all their sins, all their burdens, all their problems, all their difficulties, and to be reconciled to God.
    • “The ministry of reconciliation” is that ……. God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and also God.., has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ..
    • This ministry is committed to all believers who are to, in Christ’s stead, beseech men to seek the reconciliation that God offers.
    • 2 Corinthians 5:20 reads
    • Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
    • Who is an ambassador? Webster says an ambassador is a minister of the highest rank accredited to a foreign government or sovereign as the official representative of his own government or sovereign.
    • “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ.” We are in a foreign land—Peter says that we are pilgrims and strangers down here.
    • Paul says, “For our conversation [citizenship] is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Phil. 3:20). Since our citizenship is in heaven, we are ambassadors down here.
    • When one government sends an ambassador to another government, it means they are on friendly relations.
    • God is still friendly with this world. He has sent us as His ambassadors. One day He will call His ambassadors home. Then judgment will begin.
    • When man sinned, God in His holiness had to turn away from the world. But God loved man, so He sent His own Son to die on the cross.
    • Now God can hold out His arms to the world and say, “You can come.” We are His ambassadors.
    • As His ambassadors, we are to tell folk, “God will save you!” All God is asking any man to do is to come to Him. God will not try to get even with you. He doesn’t want to punish you. He doesn’t want to lay a hand on you. He invites all people everywhere to come to Him.
    • Today we have the privilege of saying to you, “Be ye reconciled to God.” All He asks you to do is to turn to Him. How can He do this? It is because Christ bore it all for us.
    • God is reconciled. You don’t need to do one thing to win Him over. You don’t have to shed tears to soften the heart of God. He loves you. He wants to save you.

    UNBELIEVERS
    • The issues here are
    • Are you neglecting God’s salvation?
    • Have you been reconciled?
    • Heb 2:3 warns
    • How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
    • WE BEG YOU BE RECONCILED TO GOD TODAY!
    • Since God has changed His attitude unto you, why don’t you change yours toward Him and accept his offer of peace, and salvation?
    • Rom 10:9-10 teaches
    That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
    • For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    • be “reconciled to God” (v. 20). Since God has changed His attitude unto you, change yours toward Him.
    • Ephesians 2:13-16 teaches that
    • God’s reconciliation is already complete. He is ready to receive you if you are ready to come.
    • Therefore, the message that goes out is “… be ye reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5:20). If you will be reconciled, you will be brought into a new body, a body of believers, and it doesn’t make any difference whether you are Jew or Gentile, white, brown, red, black—all are one in Christ.
    • We have been made one new man, and we should have peace.

    When they build the offshore island it will have its own sewage treatment plant and a desalination plant.

    In an emergency water tanker trucks can drive across the bridge that will link the Harbour to Long Shoal Island.
