UNLEASH 2018, Singapore : ’SaniHive’ prototype designed by Savvy Sanitation Solutions
UNLEASHED closing ceremony
I recently took part in UNLEASH that was held in Singapore from 30th May – 6th June 2018. UNLEASH is a global innovation lab sponsored by UNDP, Deloitte, Dalberg, Carlsberg Foundation and DBS (to name a few) that convenes 1000 top young minds chosen from over 108 countries around the world to collaborate on ideas and solutions that can help achieve the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) for food, water, health, education, energy, urban sustain-ability and responsible supply chains.

As the sole female and one of the youngest persons, our multinational team of 5 also included innovators/engineers from Colombia, Singapore, South Africa and Uruguay. We tackled SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation and pitched our solution and business plan to potential funders at a marketplace and then to an audience of approximately 1200 people where we were evaluated by leading experts and company partners. Our team’s solution beat 995 other contestants and 169 other solutions to clinch both the Gold Award and the Global Scalability Potential Award –(see appended file).
SaniHive prototype

Our solution is an Integrated Modular Sanitation system that combines the collection and treatment of wastes onsite by Our SaniHive prototype (see attachment), inspired by the honeycomb structure of bees that maximizes space in limited land availability, was conceptualized, critiqued by experts and refined during a gruelling four-day innovation process converting urine and faeces into fertiliser and compost respectively.

The uniqueness  in our solution is that the toilet hub is not connected to a conventional sewage network, needs no electricity and can be scaled up or customized according to the community’s needs and natural design. Furthermore, profits can be made from the waste recycling (as this system separates the urine and faeces within the toilet while using no water). We also hope that this innovation would empower the communities by creating employment, as local people can transport the waste to mini treatment plants where high-end products could be created; phosphorous recovery from urine for fertiliser is one example of this.
Final presentation at UNLEASHED

The Future for Savvy Sanitation Solutions Urban slum communities need sustainable sanitation that meets the needs of high population density, because the current temporary portable toilets are largely inaccessible due to space constraints; many people often share a few toilets, leading to poor sanitary conditions. With projections of there being close to one billion urban slum dwellers worldwide by 2030, sanitation innovations such as ours will play a big part in ensuring clean water and sanitation and in creating sustainable cities and healthy citizens.

To start, we will focus on the urban slum Kylethisha in South Africa and we can use this slum as a case study for implementation in other developing countries based on their specific needs and limitations; our solution is not limited to urban slums, but can also be valuable in water-scarce communities/areas, or  in richer suburbs, where you create an integrated, decentralised system with a mini treatment plant in the neighbourhood.
Team working at 12AM to completed businessplan and technology

As the co-founders of Savvy Sanitation Solutions, our team is excited about pursuing the SaniHive innovation, and are currently meeting with funders and investors to help commercialise this technology.

  1. Norther…shut up..I said I hope it was not the same invention…where did I say it was, besides yall are well known thieves,,

Show me one instance in the last 500 yers where yall did not steal something from the black race…even if you did not need to…just one instance.

    I dare you.

  2. Heard from Dr. Holder, she expressed thanks to all making favorable comments, her team appreciates it, they too have been receiving good feedback from their respective countries as well.

  3. These young geniuses, creatives and inventors just have to be at all times vigilant and aware of the thieves who would seek to disenfranchise them and rob them of their inventions…particularly the thieves in Barbados, they must at all times protect themselves and their inventions.

The successful creatives I know excelled off the island, it was just too dangerous for them and their inventions with the known minority thieves always lurking, this is a well known fact…no one has to make up these stories.

For the majority population to move forward, this must at all times be taken into consideration, the population have to learn to protect themselves…there is no better time to start like now.

  4. hittin de groun running!

Barbados has an immediate need for 5000 toilets.

  5. @Hants

Are you hinting there is the opportunity to use Barbados as a pilot site?

  6. I hope this young lady seeks a career in the big wide world and only returns to Barbados to see relatives and friends and enjoy the climate. To return to Barbados she will be eaten alive by the crabs.

    One? Hair.
BS…you KNEW the report you selected had not one thing to do with Dr.Holder’s invention nor anybody on her team. Rather it suited your daily purpose, to divert attention towards your daily drivel. Hence you didn’t have to hope one WW (borrowed from Hants), you knew. The only common factors were invention and a person from S.Africa.

Lol…u dare me…and now you running.

  11. Running from what?? the only reason yall never stole black people’s hair is because ya are afraid of it, don’t want to see it and spent the last hundreds of years keeping blacks hating their own hair so you do not have to deal with it……you really don’t want me to start on that subject, I really don’t think so…

  12. Did not realize you were so touches about racist South Africa, ya should have never let me know that, makes it easier to tweak your weakness.

Ok boss. Looks like the ole blogmaster is back.

  15. At the end of the day..young black people never stood a chance against minority thieves in the last 60 years because of weak black governments on the island, particularly post independence and the charade which we all now know was well engineered for special effects.

Until the slave society that is Barbados is completely dismantled, young brilliant people would do well to stay away once they get off the island…things will never change unless those institutions of disenfranchisement of the majority population are finally dismantled permanently.

Dr. Holder and her team of entrepreneurs have a vast untapped market awaiting them in India and across Africa.

Barbados could be used as an ‘early-bird’ guinea pig given its current sewage challenges.

A true eco-friendly venture to sync easily with the climate change agenda.

Wishing them all the best in their invaluable endeavours to improve public sanitation and hygiene across the globe.

  17. @ David, ” opportunity to use Barbados as a pilot site “.

I think it is an opportunity that should be explored.

I am also seeing this toilet as being useful after a hurricane or other disaster. CDEMA could be a client.

  18. The earth is not as big as these young people may believe…the world is their oyster and they should make the most of every country available to them, don’t get swamped down and bogged down in some old now decayed slave society, now is not the time..

…..as I said earlier, their are many ways to contribute to the island without making yourself a victim of the predators on the island.

I actually have family who do and very successfully.

    @Hants
it has to be commercialized. For public use, the security, safety, lighting etc etc has to be thought through and incorporated. This is merely a starting point to display a concept. As the design changes, so will the materials, hardware etc etc And the cost, which will ultimately determine its commercial viability.

  24. @BU David, thanks for posting my niece work as I knew the feedback would have been instructive to her as a young bright scientist.

She will continue to share with the country, her research and patents as a way of inspiring other youngster to think big and see the world as their oyster.

The knowledge Economy is the only thing that can save our country through smart partnerships. In addition the model of our UWI producing a bundle of lawyers and an unneccessary porportion of accountants is unsustainsble. We must create and not just consume!

I genuinely wonder how many people, having read your comment, recognize its import, nay even its critical relationship with keeping Barbados afloat and then getting it moving.

Can any one of you bloggers provide a timeline for gestation to realization and the revenue generation for any Knowledge Economy product?

Then, having done such, could someone plot a timeline for the implosion of the Barbadian dollar?

Now given the optimal intersection of these two lines and the potential impact of the former on the latter, would you tell me Mr. HOLDER why we are spinning tot in mud?

Could it be that this lot don’t know what to do?

I know that you know that the timeline from gestation to fruition is indeterminate. And that the variables are so numerous that it would take a computer the size of the treasury building to work it out before the next election.

Pray tell me why are you so eager for the Barbados Dollar to implode? Are you a consultant from over- and -away? You like you want to buy up all the land in Barbados after the implosion. I am going to stop watching Mia and keep a sharp eye on you. Wuh loss!!!

Then again, expect nothing but tricks and subterfuge from the Mia government unless they remove those slave laws from the very structures of governance and the constitution that Beckles and the professor dude finally exposed…

…unless that is done the electorate will get only deceit, lies and coverups from a government who has practiced such against their own people as a political party for 60 years…, until the electorate also dismantles and disbands the BLP in 5 years time as they did the other half of the deceitful DLP duopoly.

They will deserve to be surgically removed from the political landscape also.

    @ well Well and Consequences

I am reliably informed that the construction of a bathroom and toilet actually displaced staff (a staff member)

I am trying to get a picture but with these things you know how people are touchy that if they are seen taking a picture and den de ole man publishes it well whaplax…

Here is the thing though…my feeling is that all these things have happened, are happening and will continue to happen ONLY IF WE LET THEM!

I ent nobody special but I have committed myself to One Author and FOR THE MOST PART He prevails on your humble servant to think good thoughts (heheheheheh) and to say good things (heheheheheh) and do THAT WHICH IS RIGHT

My way is not the sweet talking way that many here have grown accustomed to over the years

I is not David Come Sing a Song .

    Nor is i Eric Fly.

And to tell you the truth I may just be fooling myself about my mission and purpose in life (what is left of it) but you know what WHILE IT IS OBVIOUS THAT DEM HATES DE OLE MAN of one thing that you and I can be sure dem got a healthy respect for muh.

And dem know that the things that I say are 90 percent true.

I got to hold back pun de 10% becausing it will expose a feller or two but that is understandable.

If it is bout de ole man NOT A FELLER DOES COME OUT TO SAY “He lying” but what dem would do is loss way (or lost way) de ole man files.

Dale Skinny Teets know whu I talking bout so I hope that when Ellis Talking to Mia that he will ask her “what is her definition of Integrity?”

And if that means that a different rule for the Medes & Mugabes and another for the Persians.

  44. @ the Honourable Blogmaster, your assistance please with an item about this AG bathroom/toilet

  45. Piece…we all know Kellman is not the brightest bulb, but he actually said something, unwittingly of course, that is very instructive, I always wondered why these wicked politicians and ministers feel that once elected they were given some kinda license to do as they like and not what is in the best interest of the majority population, the black people like themselves who pay their salaries, these clowns all believe that once elected, by the people, paid a salary by the people, that according to Kellman..and I quote.:

“They are the Government and they are therefore free to do as they see fit,” he added.”

So that mindset that ministers have that when they are elected that they are free to do as they see fit, which in the bajan vernacular means…as they feel like….must be changed to that they are not free, but must do what benefits the people who pay their salaries, the majority population who are THEIR EMPLOYERS.

Marshall seems to not have a toilet and bath at his house, if he actually believes he has the right to waste taxpayer’s money in that manner…this is quite believable as he already started seesawing from the list of promises made to the electorate, I don’t expect very much from him except that he must be watched very carefully as well.

You said and I quote “…, I (you) have proposed that parochial think tanks replace Constituency Councils and that a R & D levy be added to fast food or be extracted from tourist especially Crusie Passengers to fund Village Mini Silicon Valleys type smart areas…”

Let me expand on that if i may.

It is impossible for the GoB to fund these think tanks in multiple venues as you are suggesting

Notwithstanding the AG funding the expansion of his office to include a bath and toilet.

So here is what the ole man would have proposed as a workaround to such a logistical and financial challenge

This is a building that is located in Bridgetown dat de grandson send me

It is next to de FCIB Bank pun Broad street and he know bout dat place causing heheheheheh

    https://i.imgur.com/Z3KpzGC.jpg

You would be more familiar with its front

    https://i.imgur.com/JNiwOUJ.jpg

The building would house a centralized Innovation Centre and would be the single hub where we would “…encourage kids from early to think strategically in National Critical Analysis/ Problem Solving…” environment

It is apparently a building that is now or was previously being paid for by the Ministry that Lil Caesar Stephen Lashley was commandering. As well as it benefited from $1 million dollars from the World Bank through the HIV Aids Commission. So it is “known” to the GoB and everything that de granson says can be confirmed.

De ole man could give you a schedule for any and all such activities of which you speak but that would mean that any personal deals with leasors WOULD HAVE TO BE ENDED IF THAT SITE is chosen but all a body would have to do is tek a bus from anywhere in Barbados to Bridgetown and you would be at the Innovation Hub.

Looka dere is sooo much to be done and so many resources to do it with

Let de ole man show you a few

    http://competecaribbean.org/news/jamaica-ignite-fund-second-phase/

“…The Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility is exploring avenues for supporting Jamaica’s Innovation Grant from New Ideas to Entrepreneurship (IGNITE) Phase II. The IGNITE Programme is managed by the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) and was designed through support from the Inter-American Development Bank to support the creation and growth of new firms in productive sectors.

Selective business service intermediaries (BSIs) work with competitively selected innovative entrepreneurs in accessing grant funds and training to develop and commercialize their products. The first phase of the IGNITE program provided bank provided funding of between JMD$1 million and JMD$4 million to 27 entrepreneurs under IGNITE’s 18-month pilot.

The program reports that during the first 12 months of IGNITE’s pilot, 215 full time jobs were created; $225 million in investments were generated; and entities realized approximately $109 million in revenues from the domestic market and exports…”

Kammie de ole man tired fighting these vagabonds and ingrunt swine.

There is MUCH TO BE DONE, THE RESOURCES ARE RIPE, BUT THE WORKERS ARE FEW.

I tried the link that you provided for you niece but it said that the page was not available (and even though it is a Facebook page, (I do not use Facebook) I would still make an outreach to her with a few suggestions etc)

What is will share is ONLY for her and not for the vagabonds and pretenders that abound here on BU, trolling for resources/ideas.

In particular, as it relates to the stage that you said that she seems to be at with her team, I will convey information regarding SERIOUS EU funding that exists, UNLIKE the vapourware IT Portal pretentions that the Caribbean Export recently launched heheheheheheh.

But with regard to the CE portal, peeple going soon see whu dat is all about (as the stroking of the region’s COLLECTIVE dickeys continues. The Delegation Head at the EU is a new man so he going get brek in soon AND WILL SOON FEEL HOW ALL THE BLOWING OF AIR UP HIS POOCH IS JUST HOT AIR not even cold air)
