I did not dissolve it – deliberately – and of course the experts have been giving expressions to their surprise. ‘This is the first time in Barbados’ history, that a parliament was allowed to stand dissolved by effluxion of time’. That is how history is made. History is not made by things happening the same way all the time. History is made by doing things differentlyPrime Minister Freundel Stuart

The quote is credited to the Prime Minister of Barbados in response to wide public disquiet his decision to encroach on the 90 day period the framers of the Constitution provide to have a general election after the dissolution of parliament. For sure the statement can be generously described as puerile and strips bare the reputation earned by Barbados post Independence as a model Black democratic nation punching above its weight class.

Barbados has been reduced  to the butt of jokes brought to a head by a story in the Russian media space with the title Swapping Erections for Elections: Prostitutes Dip Toes in Caribbean .…. We have the ridiculous state of affairs a former prostitute entering the race and a political party by the name of PPP – you guessed it – indicating an interest in contesting the next general election. Say what you will, one cannot imagine this state of affairs occurring if Errol Barrow, Tom Adams  or Owen Arthur were leading the country. Is it accurate to conclude it has to do with leadership?

Prime Minister Stuart has revealed his value-set to Barbadians on numerous occasion, the best example is when he failed to censure the former Speaker of the House MICHAEL CARRINGTON for withholding payment to a client. Monies based on standard procedure should have been deposited in his Clients Account awaiting final disbursement. Because BU is rated a PG blog the blogmaster will be generous in language to describe CARRINGTON. You will recall the prime minister’s advice was to publicly advise CARRINGTON to get a lawyer.  Given the fact there was no crescendo of noise emanating from civil society led by NGOs, Bar Association and others, it brings into question the extent to which political morality is honoured in Barbados.

Notwithstanding, the blogmaster is unable to fathom what political capital Stuart and team is benefitting from subjecting Bajans to the humiliation currently being being experienced. As if the psyche of the Bajan has not suffered a deep puncture and the swagger transformed to a limp as a result of the protracted economic performance downturn.  Today we heard it all when perennial local political scientist Dr. George Belle described our government as a de facto dictatorship.  From a model Black country punching above its weight class to being described by a local academic as a de facto dictatorship!

It seems like yesterday in 2007 the same political arguments were being had. What has changed? TwiddleD has replaced TwiddleB. How will the cycle be disrupted? Besides Natlee championing the cause of the invisible people, what new political narrative have we been hearing?

This sets the stage for Chris Sinckler to claim that he should be given a proud place in the Bajan history books for being the Minister of Finance to have overseen the greatest number of downgrades by rating agencies during his tenure as Finance Minister. Similarly, we should probably expect the MInister of Culture would be expected to merit a place in the history books for giving himself a national honour for doing his daytime job and the Minister for the Waterworks and Sewage to be similarly elevated for silently presiding over the situation that led to the greatest number of potential tourists avoiding the smelly south coast of Barbados, etc., etc., etc.

I think that Laugh-it-off should be commissioned to record a short skit on the accomplishments of the above jokers for wide dissemination on facebook and whatsapp to ensure that their place in the comedic history of this island will be assured.

I don’t know why Barbadians should have expected anything different from this Government. The 30 candidates that contested the polls in 2008 were mostly unemployed or underemployed non achievers. Pray tell me what would you expect non achievers to do? They won the elections because the BLP had grown arrogant and the electorate sought to punish them by removing the BLP from office. But in so doing, the electorate mostly punished itself.

  3. For more than a year I have been so sick and tired of the PM and his idiotic rhetoric and the way he did or should we say, did not do his job.

Donville Inniss was on DLPTV tonight saying that the calling of an election is not a cabinet decision, it is the PM’s decision. Wait Donville……….you dont think that we know that.

What he said after was telling……….he said that as far as he was concerned the election should have been called months ago and that instead of calling for changes to the constitution for a fixed date for elections……….we should be focusing on the powers of a PM and that he has always believed that a PM has too much power.

Well, this is about the third time in ten years that I can agree with Donville!

  4. There is now a Whatsapp message tonight saying that the PM has cancelled his plans to go to London and that Mad Max will lead the delegation. What a waste of money.

The PM could rant and rave all he wants that he is making history but I believe that he now understands that he totally misunderstood how unpopular he is and the DLP. Everywhere you go, people are talking and asking when the man “gine call the election”. Every news item on Barbados Today, the same calls are being made.

The message also states that Guy Hewitt will come home to run in St John and that OSA will endorse this. If only OSA knew how Guy Hewitt lambasted in from the pulpit of Christ Church Parish Church in 2007 until the Sunday before the General Election he he invited all five Christ Church candidates to church, he would never think of endorsing the fraud.

I heard Leroy McClean on Brasstacks defending this government today…..he is a sucker for bad dlp treatment. I wonder how he is going to feel when the dems install Guy Hewitt as the candidate for St John.

  5. The PM should do us all a favour and cancel his plans to run in the election. Call it and resign. That will make history.

  6. Dont rule that out, mitchlans……..the man feels no one can read him. What a moron!

You are really a scholar of FOLLY !

Do you really believe the palaver you spew on BU ?

How can anyone in their right mind expect general elections to be held in Barbados before the Electoral Boundaries Commission ( EBC ) has completed all the preparations for the 2018 poll ?

You need to go back to your cage !!!

  8. http://barbadostoday.bb/2018/04/03/ebc-almost-set-for-election/

    Read Prodigirl !!

How come you were calling for General Elections since December 2017 ?

When the EBC in April 3 , 2018 had not completed their preparations for the poll ?

Do you think rational thinking Barbadians are really listening to you & other BLP charlatans ?

I said earlier , please go back to your cage !!!!

    Very well written

However, you seem to be a bit ambivalent on the matter of the PPP

    And Natlee, as an individual.

Are these not one and the same thing.

  10. @Fractured BLP April 6, 2018 10:54 PM? “How can anyone in their right mind expect general elections to be held in Barbados before the Electoral Boundaries Commission ( EBC ) has completed all the preparations for the 2018 poll?”

Since the Electoral and Boundaries Commission must have know since 2013 that elections must be called no later than 2018, what was their delay in “completing all preparations for the 2018 poll?”

Or are you saying that the Electoral and Boundaries Commission is incompetent.

Do the Christian churches know that Christmas comes in December? Do they know that this year Christmas will come on December 25th? Do they need to be told when to start their Christmas preparations?

I can’t believe that I does hear such idiotic, unreasonable excuses.

  11. Barbadians will not go to the polls in April 2018 !

Latest report from the Office of the Prime Minister of Barbados 🇧🇧

So Prodigirl another month of hard labour in the field !

Shoes 👠 & money 💰 are being stretched to the limit !

BLP January 1 , 2018 posters look they have been through a nuclear war !

If the BLP can waste their Party funds in such a manner ……what will they do if they were to get their hands on the TREASURY ??

Oops 🙊……Barbadians get nightmares over :

    • GEMS
    • GREENLAND
    • EASTERY HOUSE
    • ABC HIGHWAY

Nah – Barbados deserves better !!!

Keep them in the fields…,..STUARTIE !!!

  12. Caswell

A man of your standing must find a more sophisticated way of covering your petticoat.

Your statement about the employment status of the last DLP slate of candidates was true of the BLP as well. Has always been true.

It was as true then, as it is true now, for both parties.

For only a numerical minority in either party could make claim to a degree of ‘success’ outside the ring.

When your BLP wins in a few months they too will be 70%, at least, poor-rakey, as OSA said.

  13. Simple Simon

    I understand your question .

But I am sure you would recall that around October 2017 the EBC announced that they required an upgrade of their hardware and software system in addition to additional staff.

I am sure you would recall again that a supplementary was debated in the House Assembly just prior to the dissolution of Parliament in 2018 , approving funds for the EBC to carry out the necessary upgrades .

The requests for additional funds were made in October 2017………not in 2013 !

    @ Fractured BLP April 6, 2018 11:07 PM

So what are you telling us here, Brek-down BLP?

That the same EBC were blissfully unaware general elections were Constitutionally due in 2018 with the compulsory dissolution of Parliament on 5th March?

Is this the standard MO of that so-called Independent agency of the State?

You mean to say these ‘exceptionally efficient’ managers have loads of time to concoct all schemes to violate the rights of Commonwealth citizens to vote in Barbados but find it almost impossible to meet standard operating deadlines in place since the dawn of universal adult suffrage in 1951?

How come they were ready in January 2008 when OSA called almost 6 months earlier than Constitutionally required? How come the same agency was ready for the February 2013 poll?

Don’t you think that by the mere fact the Appropriation bill for 2018-2019 was tabled abnormally early (February instead of the usual March) that the EBC top brass should have been well aware (like some of us on BU) that something fishy was about to unravel?

The only plausible reason for this planned delay in convening a new Parliament is that the ghost of Thompson has cast a dirty ominous controversial unsettling shadow not only on St. John but also in Christ Church East where the PM is left holding a blackened bag with the rotting body of blackmout Low(e) down inside.

But this time he, Lord King Fumble the de facto dictator, cannot advise the Speaker to get a lawyer but only instruct him to call an undertaker.

So what would it be Fumble? Will you call general elections and turn the Lowedown into a walking dead on the campaign trail or wait until the ‘falsified’ doctor literally kicks the bucket containing his dead mother’s fortune and then declare a state of emergency?

Something stinks in Barbados and it is not only the sewage on the South Coast but right at the heart of governance where the people’s democratic rights are about to be shit upon by one ugly ass budding dictator.

Even in that vast country called Russia where dictatorship reigns supreme and whose subjects have never even heard about Barbados are now well aware of the stench pervading the fast disappearing tropical paradise, the former model of a democratically governed and well managed developing country.

History has been made alright, not by writing his name on history’s positive pages as so proudly proclaimed in the National Anthem but by the willful inexcusable behaviour of a ‘powful-foolish’ arrogant insecure joker who certainly has risen too far above his real station in life through the mere coincidence of luck and the ingrained timidity and reluctance of Bajans to call an incompetent spade a useless spade.

Euuuuuuuuuuuu David, love what you have done to the place. Still throwing insults at that deceitful clown for a PM I see. What for? Nothing good came from him in the first few months in his Prime Ministerial role, so there is no need to act surprised that Jack donkey intends to make history, even if that history will make him the most infamous PM ”the little rock that uses to can” ever had. We got to focus on Mottley. Caswell (the sweet thing that he is) said the electorate kicked the BLP to the curve for their open arrogant show. We also know that they got kicked even harder for their crookery as well. Now we are about to go back to them thinking that for all their sins, we were not that bad off as we are today. So, me would feel that with that knowledge in our minds, we should be punching above our weights in telling the Mottley crew with her several pretending bad apples waiting to reap the spoils, that we are not taking that shite anymore. If you want our vote, then evoke what is right to protect the Barbadian taxpaying public from the few no good showboat-narians in her line up waiting again to dip hand in treasury jar.

Mottley so far has not given us a thing to show that she is serious about cleaning up the monkey business that got most of them rich is france. Not a word on what she intends to do with the contents of the PAC report. Not a word on if she gine bring about legislation that will hold ministers accountable for the shite they do and subject them to the laws of the land. Not a word on if we are going to get, finally, some Integrity, Transparency and whistleblower legislation in place and if she will let the public play a more significant role in the decision making process of Bad-ba-dos. All I am getting from her is a look of glee that she is so close to achieving her goal, and doing so means revealing, enlightening and saying all the right things at this moment so she can come later and tell bajans why she cannot do what she promised.

It seems to have played all its cards and the Barbados citizenry is a “what’s-in-it- for-me?” type of populace. While it seems that the general opinion is that DLP as a government should be go, many individual DLP candidates are still popular. We don’t vote for a government, we vote for a member of Parliament, the majority of which then forms the Government.

  36. @SSS

Thanks, it takes a lot to satisfy you we know.

You are correct, we need to focus on Mia to keep her honest, she needs to be a change agent. Unfortunately the duopoly that exist means this is the ‘hobson’ choice we have? She has her skeletons in the closet, she has her demons, we all do dont we? The pressing issue here is is who will standup to make the structural changes required to the governance system from which all other issue stem. We agree with you.
Why call the elections “prematurely”? Why call before all things are right and ready to rig the elections to ensure the return of the DLP?

Why do you think your dangerous lying party goons and yard-fowls are so cocksure of returning to office?

It might have been an easy fix to trick the politically poor-rakey OSA but you have to work triply hard to get MAM’s moral knickers in an electoral twist.

She might be a culinary lover of pussycats but certainly not a political dickhead for an easy lay.

Don’t you know that the miller has long been preaching like a prophet of doom and gloom about pending arrival of the IMF to put Bajans under heavy manners and to show them the economic ball that shot Lord Nelson?

He has lived to see the time when many in the local economic fraternity are now singing in his choir.

Even the reformed doctor Deliar is now warning about the contagious spread of dreaded ‘D’ word when the fudged foreign reserves inevitably run out and only SDR’s remain to report.

Do you really expect the puppet Guv of the Central to be honest to himself, to his profession and the people of Barbados who pay him by presenting an ‘honest’ report on the state of the country’s foreign reserves and economy for the 1st Qtr 2018 before the end of April? Where is the champion for Productivity in this?

Let your destructive lying party remain in charge long enough to see the Bajan economy ship sink while your Lord King Fumble is at the helm and his lying chief mate the Stinkliar hides in the boiler room inundated by a sea of fire under his lying ass.

  40. David

    What punishment?

The only thing we can do with the political elites is to vote them out. And they game that system of punishment by their unofficial coordination, as parties, personal conspiratorial attitudes, etc.

Even in that FJS is now prepared to blur established limits. One step further, and MAM might make such a step, the constitution and these election farces will give way altogether. Enter, overt dictatorship! Half the population will see nothing wrong with that either.

The corporate elites get no punishment at all. They just shift their allegiances to the other half of the duopoly. And business goes on per usual.

This represents a tectonic failing of what you have come to know as ‘democracy’.

The people of Barbados, indeed the people of the world, must refuse to consolidate their collective power into any set of people, or institutions which cannot be brought to heel, are not under the supreme authority of the people.

Anything less than that is dictatorship masquerading as something else, friend.

Where in the world have you seen that working.

In fact, the reverse is true

Recently, we’ve had all manner of social and political movements fighting for fairness.

Can’t you see that they are being roll-backed, defeated on all fronts, on all continents, including by inertia.

  45. David

BTW we noticed recently that a ‘former’ university professor has finally come to the realization that this FJS regime is a dictatorship (sic)

We know, of course, that dictatorship was long built into the system, there is no difference.

When Napoleon, OSA, was dictator that voice was silent. He was his dictator!

This is the kind of cowardice in scholarship we have in Barbados.

The same man who in 1994 gave away plantations and all manner of government property (transfer tax free) to CLICO. The same man we now know conspired with his friend to defraud CLICO. Of interest is at the present moment the DLP is again busy selling off government assets for pittance, with CLICO lands–the same plantations from 1994 now back in the public purse–possibly on the yard sale table. Yet they are many among us, including here on BU, who still believe that this man and his party’s tales from 2008 are gospel.
