Emboldened by a now decadent and decaying two party system, we have apparently opted to embrace a society bereft of regulatory might. The citizens have been, in some cases, willing accomplices to the cowardly abandonment of their historical mission by the political managerial class. In every area of civic responsibility, we have allowed the devolution of duty whether it entails the mismanagement of the sewage systems or failure to control the destructive mini bus culture. To some degree, we are all accomplices to the current plight of our circumstance.

From blatant political party favouritism at state agencies such as the national housing, transport board and welfare departments to the obvious corporate political gymnastics of the CLICO corruption, we have been caught with blood on our hands. We allow inconsiderate vendors to dump their coconut shells any where they choose and turn a blind eye to political nepotism and underlying corporate racism and greed. Therefore, the results of our collective ineptitude have now been ruthlessly exposed.

This is not a condition peculiar to our society but one endemic of many societies in the region, emerging from a slave/colonialist past. Our plight is synonymous with those who gleefully declare the race over and the victory won long before reaching the finishing line. It is almost an embarrassment to suggest that we have been governed mainly by delusion.

These statements are not intended to be blistering and do not suggest that we cannot change the course for the betterment of our society. The question that will inevitably be posed is: How do we move on from here? The first step that must be taken is the difficult realization that independence does not mean the raising of a flag, a national anthem and too many public holidays. The elevation of outstanding citizens to that of National Hero, is indeed a worthwhile exercise but its usefulness to the national psyche is diluted if our children have no knowledge of the reason for such elevation.

However, without hesitation, we must note that the embodiment of the excellence we seek, can be found in at least one of those heroes, who with talent, fearlessness and exciting mastery, clearly demonstrated what it takes to beat a man at his own game. That same creativity and the ability to make rather than copy; to be the engineer and not the engineered, is what we ought to seek at this time of national socio-economic bewilderment.

The workshop of sustainable national pride and progress requires tools of: national energy, innovation and creativity. Having survived physical degradation, it is imperative that we believe that mental victory is now the only worthwhile goal. Against this background, the citizen must see beyond the sophistry of those whose only ambition is to enhance only themselves and should no longer allow political sycophants and corporate parasites to guide them toward their own destruction.

“It is almost an embarrassment to suggest that we have been governed mainly by delusion.”

“it is imperative that we believe that mental victory is now the only worthwhile goal. ”

First, to achieve mental victory, Black people must be taught that their own mentalities are their worse and biggest enemies and their first instinct to attack each other using pettiness, particularly for something positive that can add to the evolving cycle of changes, is a centuries old reflex inculcated into their psyches through the generations but which they themselves are now the ones responsible for and guilty of practicing indiscriminately against each other.

Read: they cannot now blame anyone but themselves for their own self inflicted mental weaknesses.

We see it on BU each and every time and it is ugly and still very destructive to the Black race, nothing changes with that practice, focusing on perpetrating each other’s destruction or demise over petty jealousy and the need to upstage and look good, brings about nothing positive for black people…..

……as we see in every day life, the self defeating practice only serves to devolve into violence and death in Barbados and across the Caribbean and in Africa, so it is a black people problem that they are reluctant to recognize, let alone fix….but it is decidedly worse in the Caribbean in countries that profess to be well educated aka miseducated and when the people also unable and unwilling to recognize their own mental detrioration.

Upon that recognition and only then can they move on with strengthened psyches to tackle the beasts they elect to parliament and the greedy business people who help them steal from, discriminate against, disrespect, disenfranchise, keep in financial bondage and treat like mindless slaves instead of treating them as the people….who pay their salaries. …and shoulder the burdens for decades for all these loans and concessions to the private sector.

It all begins when Black people emancipate themselves from their own mental bondage and free their own minds…none but themselves can do this.

Lately on FB people have been calling for the hanging of world keaders who beat war drums to cause the anguish, misery and death of millions of people worldwide, that is how wide awake the people have become, there is no reason to tolerate or enable the mentally weak and stagnant among us, their eyes have to open to reality one way or the other…time to bring a brand new positive, progressive mentality to the table devoid of the petty, trifling and useless.

And that also goes to the yardfowls.

  2. … in other words, Barbados has drifted into facism, communism, totalitarianism where the state supersedes the individual.

Funny, not a mention of the Bible, the founding document of Barbados … or the church in the article!!

  3. @John

How do you respond to the position that we are a secular society?

  4. Define a secular society.

  5. Would you agree that the below definition from wiki is a definition to which you would subscribe?

“Secular society. In studies of religion, modern democracies are generally recognized as secular. This is due to the near-complete freedom of religion (beliefs on religion generally are not subject to legal or social sanctions), and the lack of authority of religious leaders over political decisions.”

  6. There is only one definition John.

  7. When one mentions a secular society it is to mean one where individuals exist who are not connected to religion.

Religion is the mentally destructive force, has been for centuries and wholly responsible for the mental weaknesses seen in Black people through brainwash and mind control….

…,…and modern day politics serves to compound the destruction in the last 51 years.

  9. “This is not a condition peculiar to our society but one endemic of many societies in the region, emerging from a slave/colonialist past.”

I strongly disagree, if the author means that slavery and colonialism are responsible for the present disaster. The narrative is false, since you find the same kind of bribery, crime and nepotism all around the Deep South from Mexico, South America, Southern and Eastern Europe, most parts of Africa to Southeast Asia. It is a lack of aspiration for the common good and for good governance.

I agree with the author, if he means that slavery and colonialism are the historical background for Barbadian society which we must reflect and seek justice, eg through reparations from Great Britain.

…as I said, not monetary reparationd because there are things more important in life than money, I should not have to spell them out to spoonfeed anyone.

In the meantime, all the mental stupidity on display in the Black race…has over centuries, become self inflicted.

It worked pretty well before “colonial domination” too … how else do you think the slave trades to the east and west worked.

  17. David

Once there is the misguidance about some heaven somewhere else, religion will continue to be the master of the slave.

Unless independence comes to mean the shedding of all the vestiges of slavery there will NEVER be any viable approach toward development, nationhood.

In other words, this fictitious christian god must die for a new nation to live.

That foolishness is less than 500 years old. We have histories which predate it by tens of thousands of years, littered with many more powerful, almighty, Gods.

  23. @Peter Lawrence Thompson January 15, 2018 at 8:13 AM #

Good observation. Eastern Europe could count as a Soviet/Russian colony, Greece and the Balkans as Turkish colony. However, this theory does not explain Spain, Portugal and Italy where bribery and nepotism is on the same level as in former colonies.

Maybe the countries in the South share a natural disadvantage, namely high temperature which slows down productivity and leads to various diseases not known in the North. I read a study asserting that the perfect climate for productivity is around 13 degrees Celsius. Only a few areas around the globale fulfil this condition.

John, would you please stop misleading the blog by blowing your own ‘trumpet’ of lies and falsehoods?

How do you account for 300 years of chattel slavery and plantation apprenticeship which were legalized institutions and actively supported by both the State and the Church (Christianity’s version of the Gestapo)?

Wasn’t the State- whether at Westminster or its local parody in Pilgrim House in tandem with its handmaiden called white man’s religion- the vehicle in which your version of “totalitarianism” and the control of the enslaved and oppressed black masses have always been driven?

How can black people worship a god not created in their own black-skin image but in the image of a blue-eyed blonde hair homosexual?

“God is [Light]; in {IT} there is no darkness at all.
If we claim to have fellowship with {IT} and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the [Truth].”

Barbados and it’s people will stay far behind after everyone else has moved along if they do not remove the vestiges of mental slavery, the destructiveness of religion and the most recent 51 year old stupidity of being mindless followers of corrupt politicians from the society, they will remain the most mentally if not the most physically enslaved black people in the Caribbean…for another 100 years.

One of the first steps will be never to elect a DLP party to the parliament again, they have been the most backward, corrupt force to enter the people’s parliament and regressed the island by decades, never again, send a message that 80 year old backward laws and equally backward ministers have no place in a modern society. ..make sure that political party becomes nonexistent on the earth going forward.

Not one member of that blighted political party should be allowed to spend or receive another penny of taxpayer’s money ever again, bad enough they will get a pension, they should not get a dime.

    http://www.nationnews.com/nationnews/news/120319/opposition-leader-citizens-benefit-medical-marijuana-industry

“KINGSTOWN – Leader of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), Godwin Friday, says the Ralph Gonsalves government must ensure that any medical marijuana industry established in St Vincent and the Grenadines benefits citizens.

“Whatever happens with the developments with respect to medical marijuana . . . or those persons here in St Vincent and the Grenadines who are engaged in providing products to the people who may make medicine and so on, whatever we do has to benefit our people,” Friday said on his weekly appearance on his party’s radio programme New Times on the weekend.

“It can’t be a situation where you’re simply inviting multinational pharmaceutical corporations to essentially come and dominate an industry that our local people here can benefit from.”

Friday said that over the last three years, the situation with respect to medical and recreational marijuana, and marijuana in general, has changed dramatically in terms of public opinion in St Vincent, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and also in North America.

He noted that Canada is expected to pass legislation this year to legalise marijuana for medicinal and recreational use.

He said that in 2015, the party had an internal discussion about the matter and had formed the opinion then that “medicinal marijuana, the use of it, is something that really we cannot, as a country and as a party oppose.”

So let’s see how ‘Christian, non-totalitarian, non-fascist, non-communist’ a person you genuinely are.

Do you, John, really think that the use of marijuana in whichever form should be ‘decriminalized in Barbados as is happening in other “Christian” democracies ?

Or do you believe as a pseudo-Christian, pseudo-totalitarian, pseudo-fascist, pseudo communist that Satan is not only a talking serpent but is also a plant and should be treated like that ‘tree of the knowledge of good and evil’ planted by your god in the middle of the garden as narrated in your book of myths and lies?

“And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”

Sounds like you have been around a good few rum-drinkers in your time who had no compunctions in dabbling in the spirits served at both bars of hypocrisy in the Church and competing Bajan rum-shops.

As far as we know ‘lunatics’ have always been around in Barbados; Mary Jane or no mary jane.

Why do you mentally-circumscribed and religiously conflicted people always think of marijuana in terms of ‘smoking’ it similar to the misuse of tobacco by the white man?

What about its use as an ‘Herb’ as Mother Nature intended it to be consumed like any other herb possessed with medicinal and culinary qualities?

Why would your god have created a plant that is so wicked and evil as to make a zombie out of a man so much as to worship a drug pusher peddling imported crap rather than a farmer in St. Joseph growing genuine Bajan brownies like you used to do with Alleyne Arthur ‘white’?

If only mankind can express unconditional love, caring and sharing, what a wonderful and peaceful world it would be.

All those linear constructs (identified in this article) are self-imploding due to their negative intent in duality, for their purpose was for the learning experience. Have you not notice the exponential awakening to the wrongs and motives in all societies and the birthing of the new way of thinking from the heart and not of the head/mind which was an incarcerating program to keep mankind in the mental control matrix by deception, keeping you from knowing the truth of what reality truly is and how it works?

…”To some degree, we are all accomplices to the current plight of our circumstance.”…

So true, but how was the current plight of our circumstances manifested?…however you look at it , it involved some negative attribute. NEGATION will no longer be part of the game of life.
It will deconstruct and be exposed for what its worth and will be replace by meaningful programs
We are at the point in galactic history that in this NOW TIME (not dwelling on the past nor giving thought of the future) we become more empowered to manifest positive creative energies in every sphere to the benefit of mankind and the environment. Old systems cannot be applied .

…”How do we move on from here?”…As it is an absolute that our NOWTIME empowers us to create our next realities (within the parameters of love for all) as a collective, we can create/ESTABLISH the conditions WE NEED TO EXPERIENCE in our lives and society regardless of what is currently being experienced… expect the results. The Universe will move to manifest your most humble intentions.

…”it is imperative that we believe that mental victory is now the only worthwhile goal”….

That expectation of mental victory comes when focus is upon the heart.

What we should have done with the sewage situation was to have made it a private sector industry.

Government should not be in this at all.

It is too inefficient and lacking in the technical, managerial and financial direction of such a vital and complicated industry.

Too many disciplines are needed to make it work well.

I can understand the supply of water and the need to control land use, but even in this Government control is a problem and encourages corruption.

The sewage industry should be producing high quality water for sale and reuse.

There should be sewer systems in the Warrens area, on the west coast and throughout Barbados where water is being produced for reuse and sale.

Water should be priced to reflect its value and scarcity to force its efficient use.

    This is total madness.

In a truly capitalist system such a way forward is conceivable.

But we have instead a psuedo facist/communist/totalitarian system which encourages corruption and cronyism and perpetuates itself.

In such a psuedo system, the private sector is no longer an engine, it is a parasite depending on Government largesse.

I don’t know how we will ever get out of the mess in which the thinking of the past 50 years has placed us but somehow we need to do just that.

    It is a dismal failure.

This is one aspect of Singapore from which we should have learnt.

The sewage operations should be self sufficient in the supply of energy from the waste you forgot to add.
