As I engage the younger generation, who we are training to manage Barbados after we have gone to the great beyond, I am normally impressed with their general boldness and ability to articulate their concerns.
I recently saw a young fellow who appeared to have just graduated from secondary school selling newspapers. I bought one and then gave him a $10 tip as I explained to him that I wanted to encourage him to keep doing the right thing. He politely accepted the gift, and I was impressed by his politeness. He should do well in business, because he was selling a high-demand product in a high-trafficked location, and he was polite – which is a valuable asset.
I also encountered persons selling mangoes. Some had no fear about explaining that they had picked them from a neighbour’s yard. They felt justified since they did not pick all, but left some, that were harder to reach, for their neighbour. They also felt entitled to the mangoes since they previously chased the monkeys from stealing the fruit.
They asked me what I will do about police coming into their community and taking bribes for looking the other way. They laughed when I informed them about the Police Complaints Authority, saying that it is a joke. I asked them whether they had ever made a complaint, and they admitted that they had not because it is a joke. I explained that they should first make a complaint, and then observe the response before they conclude that it is joke.
They agreed that this was a rational approach, but then countered by stating that they were tired of all of the hypocrisy in Barbados. Why is everyone preaching “do as I say but not as I do”? They then asked some pertinent questions.
Why are obese health officials preaching that the public should not enjoy the unhealthy foods that they seem to be enjoying in abundance? Why are people with high salaries telling those who are barely getting by to tighten their belts? Why are people who are always drinking preaching that others should drink responsibly?
When I asked about their choice of job, they tried to justify their choice of employer. What is the difference between having an employer who tells you to use substandard materials and methods, and having a gang lord who tells you to sell drugs? In both cases, the employers are doing wrong, customers get hurt, and if they get caught, you will be out of a job. So what is the real difference?
Why do the police leave the men who pay and receives bribes, and the restaurants that dilute drinks, and contractors who do bad work, and shops that sell defective products, and supermarkets that sell expired food alone, but want to arrest the fellows who are selling drugs? How is that right? I agreed that it was not right, and that in a Solutions Barbados administration, they would all be treated equitably.
This brings us to the political poster issue. The Barbados Light and Power formally requested all political parties not to place posters on their poles. One reason given is that they can seriously injure workers. Respect for private property is a basic human right in Barbados, and is protected by our constitution. Politicians who want to write our nation’s laws, but unashamedly violate constitutional property rights in full public view, are extremely poor examples for our youth.
Fortunately for all of us, there is an upcoming general election and an opportunity for us to select better political models for our nation’s justifiably cynical youth. Your responsibility in this regard is to simply note every political candidate on a utility pole, and do not vote for them.
If anybody can help the BU household to understand how the poster on BL&P poles is a problem? The posters are being affixed with tape and not staples. It is a time honoured tradition. If it is a problem cant the BL&P sue someone?
Dont the power company workers use cherry pickers to reach power lines, I thought climbing poles was abandoned decades ago in favor of buckets which are much safer.
If Grenville is saying the opposition is disregarding the power company’s rights to not want posters on their poles…well yes….I dont see where posters are needed anyway, the days of impressing voters with folly are long gone, politicians should create other methods of convincing voters they will not be just as corrupt, incompetent and neglectful as the present government, instead..
Putting up posters so clueless fools can say “I voting for he/she, I like he/she is now dark ages…everyone, who is not clueless, hates politicians, they lie too much. .

The problem I have with Grenville Phillips II is, (although he means well), he should have selected “shadow ministers” from his 29 candidates and delegate them to speak on various issues…………..
……………rather than assume the roles of attorney general and “shadow minister” of finance; health; tourism; education; foreign affairs (he made a mess of that in a previous article on the UN vote); sports, youth affairs & culture; social care, constituency empowerment and community development; labour, international business and the other ministries (some of which, in my opinion, are unnecessary)…….thereby presenting HIS OPINION on ALL issues in Barbados.
Phillips II could have used the south coast mess as an opportunity to demonstrate to the electorate, the “TRUE METTLE” of his candidates as they address pertinent issues derived there from. For example, he could have assigned different candidates to speak on the repercussions of the sewage on health, tourism and the environment respectively.
However, while addressing the BL&P/poster issue, he could have also given an opinion on the BL&P CHARGING customers $500 for a utility pole and using that same pole to facilitate the connection of electricity to other customers FREE OF COST……….. as well as allowing FLOW, DIGICEL and other companies to use that pole, FREE OF COST, to connect their services to customers.
As Miller pointed out, Barbadians must work on their greed.

I was about to mention it, but I was sure customers have to pay for those electric poles, so by law they do not belong to Emera they belong to the customers, because after the cistomer pays for the poles the electric company turns around and uses them, free of cost…talk about thieves and ripoff artists.
The only poles the electric company can lay claim to are the ones on the highways…..and who is to say upon installation taxpayers did not also pay for those.

Despite having the full complement of 30 candidates, Grenville Phillips II continues to be the “face and voice” of Solutions Barbados, choosing to speak on ALL issues, since the party was established over two years ago.
It seems as though Mr. Phillips II has not IDENTIFIED nor has CONFIDENCE in anyone from among his candidates to address SPECIFIC ISSUES, such as the economy, health, education, tourism, international business or matters falling under the attorney general’s portfolio.
It is about time he realizes that introducing candidates does not only mean demonstrating to the electorate SB has 30 candidates and thinking highlighting their years of working experience is enough to convince people to vote for them.
Mr. Phillips II must let his candidates show they are deserving of the electorate’s support and vote, by allowing them to use Solutions Barbados’ column, social and traditional media to discuss issues affecting Barbados and articulate policy solutions.
As the leader of a new emerging party Mr. Phillips II should concentrate his efforts on being “refreshingly innovative,” by introducing a new style of politics, rather than going down the same line as the other political parties.

First of all the fee is a security deposit and is refundable when one does no longer need the use of the utility service. The deposit is a binding and legal contract that ensures that the consumer has a right to electrical service and compensate for damage if done by the customer .however does not give the consumer the right if ownership

Would you believe that a family built a house further down from me, they came and asked me for permission to use the pole, BL&P said no and told them they had to pay to plant the pole near to their house.

Circa 1960 we had to “purchase” a pole to facilitate receiving electricity in our home, immediately after that our neighbours applied for and received electric power via the same pole, we paid at the time what would be a Queen’s ransom for a working-class family but it was either that or kerosene lamps with “Home Sweet Home” chimneys or those gas lamps that one used methylated spirits to light. We never received any compensation from BLP for the other business that pole generated for the company
That a utility company which enjoys a monopoly in providing its service to its customers would still be billing for poles in 2017 is unconscionable, it would be interesting to know what profit BLP obtained from that one pole since 1960 as well as the profit it now enjoys from “providing” poles to new customers.

Heard today on VOB 1230p news that CBC/DLP News is losing the services of their DLP supporter and former DLP candidate,now General Manager of CBC Doug Hoyte.Further as a cost saving measure CBC has axed the call in programme.I am not sure of the name of the call in programme as I don’t ever listen to the crap trotted out by Maureen Holder and the hollow brained shouter John Lovell.Maybe the two can offer their services to VOB when the BLP replace the current ‘wild boys’.Recall this same Maureen called a ‘press conference’ to air some contrived greivance and used the pulpit to share her CV,a ruse I thought then and confirm now was baring her wares to the highest bidder.It s clear she was given a heads up that her future was not as secure as they all thought.This foolish woman defended every action of the DLP which others suggest was a form of prostitution.

At a minimum any party leader who writes in one of his columns that he gave a $10.00 tip to an individual is not being careful of the impression that act tends to convey to prying eyes.Richie Haynes says it best……impressions are often seen as more important than the truth or as in this case the truth as seen through the eyes of the perpetrator of the ‘crime’.
