Grenville Phillips II, leader of Solutions Barbados

As we approach the inevitable General Election, voters have a most important decision to make.  Who will they select to manage their affairs for the next 5 years?  During this time, political parties will try to entice voters to vote for them.

There are currently 3 political parties with over 20 Candidates.  The Democratic Labour Party (DLP), the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), and Solutions Barbados (SB).  The BLP and DLP are skilled at wooing voters, who, for this article shall be called Lady Barbados.  They are the equivalent of boyfriends whom she has had in the past.  Solutions Barbados is a new suitor.  How can he convince Lady Barbados that he truly cares for her?

Her experience with Boyfriend DLP has not been exciting.  He goes out with her but insists that she pay for everything.  The items are not the most expensive, so she pays for them.  He has made it clear that if she selects him as her boyfriend, he will never pay for anything.  She will always have to pay for herself, him and his friends, because he does not work.

Her experience with Boyfriend BLP is a lot more exciting.  He takes her on expensive trips and lavishes her with expensive gifts.  She feels so lucky to have him.  Then he presents her with a bill for all of the items.  She is shocked to learn that he had added her name to his credit card making her responsible for all of his purchases.  He tells her that she must pay the entire debt.  He also makes it clear that if she selects him, he will keep her in unsustainable debt by doing the same thing – but she will enjoy the gifts.

Lady Barbados is so disappointed and hurt by the actions of present Boyfriend DLP that she is considering returning to Boyfriend BLP.  Then she meets Solutions Barbados and he immediately shows her how she can pay off her debts without much difficulty.  He also works with her to start a new business and generate another revenue stream.  He then helps her renegotiate her employment contract with her employer to protect her future earnings.

Solutions Barbados knows that she has been hurt by previous boyfriends, and is attentive to the cautious manner that she now approaches monetary issues.  So he prepares detailed financial plans for their future together and encourages her to get professional analysts to examine them and advise her accordingly.  He does this because he truly cares or her.

Lady Barbados considers her options and realizes that she no longer remembers the harm done to her by Boyfriend BLP – time has healed the wounds.  Now, she only remembers the expensive trips and gifts, and longs for that experience after being burdened so long with cheap and lazy Boyfriend DLP.

Solutions Barbados tries to warn her about the previous irresponsible ways and reckless debt promises of Boyfriend BLP.  However, she gets angry.  Why must I talk negatively about Boyfriend BLP?  Why can’t I just woo her without spoiling her dreams of an expensive lifestyle – the fine wines, tender sirloin, exquisite deserts, expensive jewellery, and Paris by night?

I try to convince her that our planned future will allow her to purchase any of those things herself.  But I am losing her.  I try to bring her back to reality, but she is lost in her dream world.

She is certain that no-good Boyfriend DLP has to go.  But the recollection of the good times overpowers her.  She can smell the food, taste the wine, and feel the excitement of opening a present that she knows will be wonderfully delightful – oblivious to the fact that she will be forced to pay for it all.  If she makes the tragic decision to return to Boyfriend BLP, she will never know the stable future that she just, in a moment, gave up.

Choose wisely Lady Barbados.

I got so tired of the shite written by some on BU that I do not come on here like before. But, to think, that you, one of the few females on here that up to now has been so practical and commonsense in your comments, can now write shite like this, I am really disappointed.

You might be opposed to the philosophy of Granville’s SP party, or the way he conveys his messages, or even the fact that you think he is too bougie to understand the common man, but he is providing an alternative from the sickness that has infested the Dees and Bees. None of you wants the give the man a chance. All of you are judging harshly and what you perceived to be wrong about him and the people he selected. None of you does not know if he will deliver or not. Yet, you all condemn before he is tried, ostracise him before he can make a delivery. Totally unfair and uncalled for. He might not make a dent in the next election, but he certainly can wrestle some feathers as a viable alternative. The crap in all of this is the positions some of you choose to take.

  4. To Gabriel: it is not fair to bring his marital status in the conversation. If you read his analogy carefully he is right on cue. Reading and comprehension: they are fundamental.

Fight on …fight on. The BLPDLP has lost at least 35 % of the electorate. Don’t mind the naysayers. They just waiting for their turn at the trough.

  7. @ Gabriel:
Do you saying that all the new candidates
in the BLPDLP should just be dismissed
    as Johnny come latelys too?
Are you saying that we should not take them seriously either?
    Just asking

  8. Recognizing the many shortcomings of our present system of governance, nothing I opine should be taken as acceptance of the Westminster or any other model of governance for that matter.I’ve been around long enough to know the animal called a human being and all that excite and make them tick.I know too, that by their fruit ye shall know them and if you cannot manage sawh shop don’t try to sell anybody the idea that you can manage massy superstore.

The ship of state was tried and entrusted into the hands that proclaimed loudly, they know what they are doing. Where the ass is Barbados today? Take a look at the reports from the Auditor General again for yet another year. These are the tried buccaneers who making sure that government finances are well managed while ignoring all the holes that money go down to feed their greed. You do not want a Granville what the shite you want. Another round of BLP and after them another round of DLP? Never expected you write such shite just because you oppose one man and his party. Never expect to read this from you girl.

  14. Gabriel, living proof that an alleged literacy rate of 97% in Barbados is a fallacy.

  15. Gabriel

Interesting point……you cant run Sawh shop but want to manage Massy super store…..

This is a fundamental point that we keep missing.

…..coupled with the fact that we are all out of one social milieu.

The answer lies in community activism keeping whoever is elected on their ps and qs….vigilance is called for.

  16. Trump is living proof of what a country of Law and Order so called, can proclaim President of the Republic. What a hoarish fallacy,a clown and a bully out of queens embarrassing the the USA and the free world.
For the uninformed, oversight of Government finances is not the responsibility of the elected. It betrays the trust we had in the Civil Service by the very responsible officers we became accustomed to exercising vigilance and oversight. If we were in the ‘bad’ old days of the ESS Burrowes’ and the Sir Stephens’,the work of the AG would have been that simpler.

It is an interesting point depending on how you look at it. We got a lot of so called good managers who have brought us to this point. If we decided to go with an untested one, we ain’t got one shite lose. Gabriel is behaving like she got a personal vendetta against Granville. Makes you wonder if she wants you to go back to the same putrefying milk that giving all we belly hurt.

The point I am getting to will make partys immaterial…..that is one of vigilance by community activists…..Gabriel has made another forgotten point i.e. the technocrats are supposed to be taking care of the country……the politicos are for policy thats all not micro managing as has been the wont.

  19. Vincent
For sure we miss Eric Fly.All like now, with elections in the air,Sunday nights in the city and environs to hear him would have been a must.Btw how come we only hear of ‘community activists’ in the Pine where we can count at least 6.What about Haynesville,Silver Hill, Gall Hill,Deacons Farm,Grazettes,Eden Lodge etc

  20. Stupse!! We all here know Solutions’members will all lose their deposits, yet we pretending to be “progressive” and talking nonsense about an alternative. An alternative does not mean better; and Solutions is not a better alternative, even UPP candidates are superior. Who the hell voting for the Weatherheads or Chabaulds or the Toussaints? Solutions does not have an attractive message, list of candidates or a leader.

  21. Gabriel

Yup….Fly,served the purpose of his era…..we need modern day ones schooled a bit like Jeremy Stephen who called brasstacks today to warn us of how serious Saudi’s actions are which may lead to oil price going to $70-80.00 per barrel and how that will have a devestating effect on our loans portfollio local and foreign due in January.

Then we had others speaking on polyclinics, pot holes, flow, etc…

A mix of BU and brasstacks may fill the void.

Splitting votes between parties will not achieve the ends you are hoping for. It makes governing impossible. Trinidad went that way in the 1950’s and every week there was a new government. Even in our present situation the PM has no “wiggle ” room to discipline his errant ministers. The Electorate voted for a strong opposition and ended up with a weak government.

it is best that ministers are kept off balanced….they are all full of crap anyway.

….Currently across the 27 countries of the European Union, 20 (or nearly two thirds) are currently coalition governments. 36. Where is the “practicality and commonsense” in suggesting because Barbadians want a change in the “political landscape,” they must READILY ACCEPT any new political party that presents itself…… and more so Solutions Barbados, because SOME in this forum believe that party is THE viable alternative…… and want to FORCE their opinion down the throats of others?

When challenged or a critical analysis is given of SB’s policies, rather than articulate his position with compelling arguments and analysis, Grenville Phillips II either resorts to insults or says he will not respond.

If he displays this attitude with critics on social media, where people are by far kinder in their responses than politicians, my concern is how he will react when confronted, for example, by aggressive politicians such as Estwick and Sinckler………… surely Grenville Phillips II should be aware he is not representing himself (as he does on social media)……. but those constituents that voted for SB.

In the absence of detailed presentation and articulation of SB’s policies………but saying their candidates have experience in successfully operating a hair dressing salon, rum shop or any other business is enough evidence to convince me that they are “adequately capable” of managing an economy, is ludicrous.

There are fundamental differences between operating a $100,000 per year business and a multi-million dollar economy.

Additionally, SB is advocating the introduction of ISO 9001 as the solution to managing the civil service. Where is the empirical evidence to substantiate this suggestion, especially taking into consideration Barbados’ indigenous and organizational cultures and how do you plan to go about its implementation? SB’s response………..ISO 9001 worked in other countries, so there is a definitive possibility it will work in Barbados.

The UPP has embraced David Gill, a former BLP candidate for St Michael South Central, who lost thrice to Richard Sealy. Rather than articulate his and the UPP’s plans for the constituency, he wasted the opportunity by “harping” about how he was rejected by the constituency branch. In reality, Gill is a loser who comes into a new political party without any clear vision for the future and with baggage he seems not prepared to discard.

And what arguments the protagonists are presenting?……………………

…………….the BLP & DLP did shiite for 63 years, so it’s time to give a new party a chance…………

why???………. because they cannot perform any worst that the BLP & DLP………….. but is there any “rational viability” of their policies?

…………… “look don’t worry about that, SB, UPP and CAP cannot do worse than the BLP & DLP.”

And because I cannot accept this argument, I’m illiterate or a jackass.

Your 7.31 pm is a bunch of shiite designed to lure Bajans into making the idiotic decision to invite the BLP to screw us all over again….
Sorry, but that is the bottom line.

How can you dismiss a proposal to implement ISO9001 by SB as ‘lacking empirical evidence’ when the ACTUAL empirical evidence is there to DEMONSTRATE that the the same identical lot of BLP misfits and demons you promote, are the SAME shiite people who were so pissy and disrespectful in office, that we actually elected the demonic DLP – when we all knew of the disunity and chaos in that shiite party?

ISO9001 is a system that imposes performance standards on operations and that measures actual RESULTS, and it requires that gaps between performance standards and actual results are closed by positive actions.

It is actually the most COHERENT proposal currently on the table to address the ANNUAL shiite that is exposed by the Auditor General.

You, Gabriel and enuff obviously have wunna scratch grain stored in a BLP yard, ..but this shiite of wunna trying to use wunna personal blog influence to ram BLP propaganda down our throats will NOT fly….. not with stinking Bushie – unless the whacker brek down….

    Having said that…
Wunna BLP will win the next elections …and Mia will become our ‘dicktator’ in chief…..
BUT ONLY because it is EXACTLY what we brass bowl bewitched, brown-nose Bajan clowns DESERVE.

We DO NOT deserve to be led by intelligent, selfless, successful professionals. We want talent-less, low-life, low-class, legal, shiitehounds who we ALL know are in it for THEIR OWN personal benefits.

Pray tell Bushie …why would someone who is professionally successful, and who offers themselves as a leadership option – IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE WE HAVE BEEN SADDLED WITH SHIITE LEADERS FOR DECADES NOW – also feel obligated to beg and scrape for the support of the very brass bowls he is UNSELFISHLY seeking to help?
….wuh he would have to be a real jackass….

Wunna think Bushie would ‘bow down and scrape’ to convince a shiite beggar in Bridgetown to accept some charity? Bushie is a brass bowl…???!!

…………….accused me of trying “to lure Bajans into making the idiotic decision to invite the BLP to screw us all over again,” and “promoting BLP misfits and demons.”

Anyone who DOES NOT subscribe to the “gospel according Bush Tea,” must engage in the symbolic gesture of repentance and submission……….. by girding themselves in sack-cloth and rub ashes on their heads………… or else feel the wrath of Bushie’s tongue.

My friend, you are ENTITLED to YOUR opinion and I’m ENTITLED to MINE….. it’s that simple!!!! And if you believe my opinion is promoting the BLP, that’s your business……….. who cares????? I don’t give a #@%&.

If you want to vote for Grenville Phillips II and SB………… that’s your choice…….. knock yourself out. Find out if it’s possible for you to register in all 30 constituencies and vote for all SB candidates.

Will activism make a change in the way Barbados is currently governed? There can be no solo activism against gutless men with miscreant thinking who just masquerade under the guise of caretakers of state but not interested in the outcomes or the lives at stake. Activism is more suited to countries who understand the need to fight for a cause and who would not have a problem with numbers when it is time to back up the voices speaking on their behalf. Barbadians are a bought people (nicely paid for by the BEES and DEMS), and the voices crying out are those who refuse to be swindled by the pretty little shiny things and few Sir Grantleys.

    Lorenzo

I said nothing ill of your precious Mia Mottley. Why are you here? Did Mia promise you a little bittle? You are so quick to defend this power hungry two faces fickle that you would ignore all the past wrongs of this administration, but not me. I have had enough of the Demoncratic Lying Party and the Bombastic Lying Pretenders. Both are seasoned liars, corrupt to the bone and deceitful is shite. I embrace Solutions Party because I need something different. Even if they do shite, I prefer another set of shite instead of the shite of the DLP and BLP that too stink now for me to tolerate.

  43. Sunshine Sunny Shine November 9, 2017 at 8:59 AM #

Cannot disagree with your above to me.

Changing parties is akin to the hackneyed phrase……changing the deck chairs on the Titanic……all of us come from the same milieu and have been socialised the same way and if you find the odd apple that is different it is kicked to the curb one time.

Hence my belief that our only hope for change lies with convincing the masses that our socialisation format needs to be changed……..I agree with you it is a difficult task but with a few good people willing to speak out, over time it will change…….what happens in the mean time is that whoever is in power must be held accountable by a vocal minority.

  44. I try not to get too immersed in the political issues but politics as comedy always produce pure gold.

What are the chances that the Minister of Education and the leader of SB would stumble on the same examples in the same week? First the Min of Ed made a speech castigating the young men of Bim as bad boyfriends because they didn’t possess the sticktoitness required in a modern age and their girlfriends were going to leave them for older men (which immediately warmed the cockles of Bushies heart) if they didn’t pull up their socks and applied their brains at the various tertiary institutions.

Now the leader of SB has penned a column where he labels the dominant political parties in Bim as bad boyfriends who have continually mistreated their ladylove in contrast with his fledging party as a potential good boyfriend with a heart of gold (who) will bring flowers and chocolates for his intended’s mum, ensure her that his intentions are honourable, will worship the ground she walks on, will house her in a home in the heights and terraces and their potential children will always have the best of health, wealth, education and happiness.

Will bajans resist a good boyfriend or is he too good to be true?

Respect! People talking about ISO like if it is a piece of shit concept. A known proven tool that works subjected to relegation just because the rising of the third party is stirring up animosity amongst a bunch of partisan lackeys (not you artax). Its shortcomings are not that its methodology is found wanting but that it is subjected to devices of unscrupulous persons looking for ways to get around it so that it can be circumvented.

Barbados has a shitty type of governance that ignores checks and balances because of the structures set up are to make stinking greedy ass people rich. None of the politicians wants systems that would stop the ease at which they can tap into the Treasury’s account. That is why the reports from the Auditor General do not get an inkling of utterance from none of these crooked parties, and that is why people like the shite we got for a Prime Minister can resort to old time 1929 anticorruption legislation as still relevant for the day.

  48. A CLEAN sweep.

That’s what Barbados will have to do to lift the Country.

  49. A number of British celebrities have bought holiday homes in Barbados using offshore companies that allow them to avoid paying local taxes when they sell their property, the Paradise Papers reveal.

The documents show a host of Britons own property on the island via companies set up in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) – a method that has legal tax advantages.

One of those who appears to have used the arrangement is the Match of the Day host and former England football captain, Gary Lineker.

Stamp duty is only payable in Barbados when a home is sold, but using this structure, it is possible to avoid paying the tax.

The issue of giving tax breaks to foreigners is provoking concern in Barbados, with the country in the midst of an economic crisis. Ballooning debt has led to steep and highly divisive tax rises across the board.

“We plan to institute a system where tax avoidance will be challenging, very, very difficult,” said Grenville Phillips, the founder of Solutions Barbados, a political action group which will field candidates in all 30 parliamentary constituencies in next year’s general election. It has made tax reform a central plank of its election manifesto.

“We are not persecuting anyone, that should be very clear. We’re not saying you have to pack your bags and go, or you pay all sorts of fees to live in Barbados. But we will look at things and see if they are fair.”

Barbados has long been a favourite holiday destination for the world’s elite, with villa-style homes in popular estates selling for up to $10m (£7.5m).
