Prime Minister Freundel Stuart’s Official Car

Those of us who experienced the Barbados of the 70s and 80s participated in the transformation of an agrarian economy to service based. We can debate if successive governments have erred by deprioritizing agriculture and manufacturing by giving the international business/offshore sector pride of place to pay the bills. What is irrefutable is that Barbados by any definition moved the economic needle indicator in the right direction- the middleclass segment grew and in the process Barbados achieved model status as a small Black developing island state. In the last decade Barbados has emphatically answered the question ‘what is cyclical’?.

The pride many Barbadians felt until recent has deflated from our bosoms once swollen with pride largely because of profligate consumption expenditure habits coupled with a lazy approach to national productivity.

One of the many criticisms the Barbados Underground blog has had to suffer from its detractors is that we focus too much on the negative. In our defence, we promote the view that is encapsulated in BU’s motto,  “for the cause that lacks assistance, the wrong that needs resistance, for the future in the distance, and the good that [BU] can do”. Barbados is a small island and the inhabitants are related, loyal to the school tie or participate in an activity which work to influence how decisions are taken on the island.

Au contraire, the BU household sees our spotting of the light on the underbelly of Bajan society as positive. Sustaining a democratic system of government is a serious business that calls for eternal vigilance by some like the BU household who are impervious to RH.

No biase, no bullshit!

In recent years what has been the source of embarrassment to members of the BU household has been the deterioration of our infrastructure. The most visible is the road network. It is not about the odd pothole which can be dodged as they appear. It is about multiple potholes tactically located to ensure tyres, rims, life and limb are constantly under threat for those who dare to drive to venture out.

Bajans understand that the current financial state of the country must translate to efficient allocation of the national budget. What the BU household does not understand is the inability of the political directorate to publicly demonstrate by decisions and actions that they want to lead the country. How can you ask Barbadians to tighten their belts until the bellies of many touch their backs, yet from the prime minister down the line want to drive Mercedes, travel first class on the taxpayers dime, attend every conference, wear $1,000 Italian suits to list a few. Good leaders understand that the best way to change the mindset of people they lead is to act in ways that emotionally resonate. For example, suppose Stuart announced tomorrow he will sell the two luxury vehicles he has office is allocated and instead travel about the 2×3 island in a Toyota Corolla or Suzuki Vitara?  And we do not want to hear any BS about the PM’s vehicle must be bulletproof. What about the members of the Cabinet donating their allowance to the Alma Parris School to continue the work of catering to special needs children? By these two acts alone many disengaged Barbadians will be tempted to ‘up de ting’.

The job of wanting to serve in public office is soaked in a commitment of being selfless.

  1. The German cars are made for the autobahn, not for the Barbadian hinterland. They have 2 to 3 times more sensors and computers than Japanese cars. Their sports engines overheat in Barbados due to failing water pumps and radiators. And the worst thing: Servicing is costly and lengthy. It takes you 3 to 12 months to fix a German car due to delayed part and tools orders. You always need a Japanese car as a backup.

I really do not understand why so many Barbadians whoreship Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The best Barbados could do is promoting small electric cars and car-sharing.

  2. It would be very easy to change legislation and to limit the engine size to 1.5 l, the HP to 120 and the weight to 1.5 t. The same is true for electrical drive.

But the elite´s retarded views, marking them as runaways from the plantation of the 1950s, sabotage everything on the way to a better future for this island. They only enjoy consumption. Vision, sincerity, integrity – never heard of.

Good point Tron. The Mobius is designed and manufactured in Kenya by a white English man. The designer of the car arrived at the conclusion that imported cars were not designed for Kenya’s dirt tracks or pot-holed lined roads. By the way what is the speed limit on Barbados roads?

Unfortunately, Barbadians have become too materialistic, foolish and selfish to appreciate your thoughts.

  5. The speed limit max out at 80 kph on parts of the high way to 15/20 Kph in the city and secondary roads..

  6. @ David,

The pot hole problem continues to plague Barbados because somebody has to granted a

” contract ” so they could make enough ” profit “.

However since an election is coming you may soon see an army of occupation fixing said pot holes.

  7. @Tron
Hell no. Why should people be forced into driving cars the government says you should?

  8. @ David,

There was no hurricane or even a tropical depression over Barbados yesterday but this happened ?

Seems like we need the drainage unit to do some serious work.

“While many areas in Barbados experienced plenty sunshine and some searing heat yesterday, there were others “blessed” with an abundance of rain; so much that it flooded some districts.”

  9. Hants, You live in Toronto, I live in Toronto, and as a consequence we know that there is also a problem with “pot holes ” tactically located to ensure tyres, rims, life and limb are constantly under threat for those who dare to drive to venture out.” right here, especially at the end of every winter season. Barbados has the opposite problem in that the heat from the “summer sun” causes the softening of the asphalt, resulting in shifting of the under layers by vehicular traffic. The road system has much more to bear today than it had in the earlier years. With less money to spend on infrastructure repairs, careless use of the highway is the result that will reduce the life of the roadways. The advent of 16, 18 or 20 wheelers, carrying heavy loads and fully loaded containers, on roads not designed for them, and driving at speeds above the designated speed limits, MUST result in greater damage to roadways, resulting in multiple potholes etc. Don’t blame government for that, blame careless drivers and road users. I have been in Barbados and driven behind 16 wheelers, on the ABC highway travelling at over 80 km/hr. Why must these drivers travel at these speeds?

  10. This is the result Hants if we continue to construct houses in natural watercourses.

What about improving and modernizing its public transport system as a priority policy matter?

Not only is the size of the island a major constraining factor but also it is facing the demographic reality of an aging (greying) population.

There would be loads of forex savings and possibly a healthier environment.

But which government would tradeoff a readymade cash-cow easily milked from the udders of vehicle import duties, petrol (excise) taxes, road taxes and all the encumbering VAT for such longer-term socio-economic spin-offs?

Alvin, please stop peddling along the highway your road limes for political sugar-coated apples.

Why are you making it look as if the government is doing the road users a favour by fixing the roads?

Do you know of the hundreds of millions of dollars raked in through taxes on these same vehicles and their high cost of operation which are allowed entry into Barbados to be used on the same ‘unsuitable’ roads used by similarly unsuitable luxury vehicles like Mercedes and stolen Range Rovers?

Are the road users responsible for the poorly–done job of filling potholes by throwing a shovel of asphalt and leaving it to the vehicles to finish the job?

Are the road users including pedestrians responsible for placing the detritus from the drains and verges in heaps in the gutters and on the sidewalks and leaving it for weeks to be washed back into the roads to block the same drainage system?

Water might be the source of life but if not properly channeled can be also the most destructive force on land (especially to roads constructed with marl and coral pebbles.).

  17. @ David,

Toronto ” An average annual $4.5-million repair budget consists of about 250,000 potholes in a season — from January to December. ”

The problem in BARBADOS is the government’s REFUSAL to fix the pot hole problem.

They may just not have the money but it does not change that fact. I hope they are at least fixing the worst of the pot holes until the campaign starts.

  18. @Hants

We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars a few months ago to PATCH the potholes, the rains have washed those dollars away.

  19. Potholes are one thing but the utility companies don’t even repair the road they dig up to install or repair services.

On an unrelated note I tried to call BWA about a leak from their side of the meter after a few times of call centre hell I gave up……….

Well stated and on point with the elephant in the room…….the visionless govt greedy for money that the merchant class will only be too happy to facilitate with the most expensive vehicles.

If we had a proper bus system many of us will be happy to get rid of our cars and use it as we do in overseas locals.

  21. David October 9, 2017 at 1:10 PM

……and as was stated at that time…..using a shovel to pat cold mix in an unprepared hole will lead to it being washed out with the first heavy rains…….as has happened now……we never learn.

  24. Yes, I totally agree with the view here on infrastructure. I came in from Canada a few years back and got invited to Oistens to grab a fish dinner boy was I disappointed when I went to discard my trash. Every single trash can that was lining the sidewalk was fulled. Paint that had marked the crosswalks were faded and the whole area looked tired. What ever happen to MCW?

It was a disgrace to have seen this in a highly popular tourist area. Also, some uncouthed Bajans were dancing and making cat calls right behind tables were tourist were sitting, made me very uncomfortable so I only imagined what it did to the tourist. Heads up baje, no body wants to see you so stop showing off. On a more positive note, is it time that Bajans stop talking about the accomplishment of others and start building their own eletric cars. Think about job creation, higher education and emissions control.

  25. Hi David:

The potholes are the symptom, the lack of maintenance is the problem. However, the lack of knowledge is the root cause. It is this lack of knowledge that results in potholes in the first place.

In addition to being a Chartered Structural Engineer, I am also a Chartered Highway and Transportation Engineer, and a Fellow of both Chartered institutions. There used to be 6 Chartered Engineers in the public works department, and at least 3 in the Water authority. Now, there is not a single Chartered Engineer in the entire public service.

The consequences of this is devastating to our infrastructure. Using the roads as an example. There are various types of cracks on the asphaltic service. Some of them indicate aging of the asphalt, others shrinkage , others excessive bitumen, others, insufficient bitumen, while others indicate base failure. There are also combinations of these cracks.

For cracks that penetrate the entire asphaltic layer, it is important that they be sealed to prevent farther deterioration and potholes. Sealing is relatively inexpensive. Without adequate knowledge, the potholes must reveal themselves and then expensive and unaffordable repairs become necessary. Our unnecessarily high maintenance infrastructure is the source of much of our problems.

    Best regards,
    Grenville

“The defective character of Black Caribbean culture is leading to underachievement in UK schools and universities.
The price we pay for Feminism and drugs..”

    Come off it, Chad!
Feminism and drugs responsible for the ‘woeful’ underachievement (and social disintegration) as reflected in the “defective character of Black Caribbean culture”?

Aren’t feminism and drugs (like crystal meth) rampant among white communities faced with the similar socio-economic ‘challenges’?

It’s a known fact that Caribbean blacks tend to under perform education-wise when matched against other ethnic groups even in settings where the Caribbean blacks make up the majority e.g. in Barbados.

What can you expect when blacks still carry the mental scars of slavery which instill in them shame of their physical appearance with an abiding feeling intellectual inferiority and where the only book in many homes is the Bible.

Aren’t many of those from the same Caribbean culture devout Roman Catholics like Haitians and your good self of pure piety?

I must confess that your allusion to feminism as part of Caribbean culture does require further exploration; for the survival and liberation of the blacks does lie primarily with the liberation of the mind of the black woman.

Until she sees herself- not as any slave to the god of materialism and as an easy target of exploitation by Western capitalism- but as the torchbearer carrying the baton for the physical survival and liberation from mental slavery of the black race.

This could be achieved only when she and her male partner go to the Father of Light for knowledge and understanding of the role they ought to be playing on its child planet called Pachamama or Gaia.

Then they will appreciate why their hands clasped in adoring supplication are the colour they are and the wooly (curly) black hair of their offspring there to protect the developing brain from the intense power of Ra; the only God they should be worshipping instead of some murderously fickle desert god of plagiarized and distorted Hebrew scholastic tales of monotheism.

The (black) hands that rock the cradle of the ‘pickaninny’ are strategically placed to groom a new Nubian adult not only of physical beauty but of intellectual worth and enlightenment by acquiring power through knowledge.

    “Amen”!

  31. MNK

Feminism equals predatory, resentful women, equals divorce, equals female-headed households, equals poverty, male delinquency and academic failure.

  32. The defective character of Black Caribbean culture is leading to underachievement in UK schools and universities.

    @ Chad,
You are wrong and have not been reading the background noise to the government’s new race audit. For your information, black boys enter the education system at age five top of the class, by age eleven they are bottom.
Black women out-perform all other groups, including Chinese, at university; both black men and women out-perform white men (this is often interpreted as white working class men, but it is the entire group) at university.
The problem is that this is not reflected in jobs. During the boom years up to 2008, black youth unemployment was in the 40s, while young, white Europeans came to London and immediately got jobs.
The barrier has now shifted and the attack is now in the field of education: black toddlers are not barred from nurseries for being too aggressive. Imagine that, from the age of -5 black kids are branded as aggressive. This follows them right through school, and now even in to further and adult education.
In a few years, the excuse for high black unemployment is that they do not have the right qualifications – because they were kicked out of college and university. African-heritage children are bucking the trend and performing outstandingly. Young West Indians are reacting to the regular provocation.
I will give you a personal tale: one of my God daughters is now about to enter medical school. Her older sister is about to graduate from law school. She wants to be a barrister, let us see if she gets a pupillage.
When the older sister got her A level results, she was on her home computer, and screamed – 8 As and 4A*. My God daughter only said ‘damn’. She knew immediately that the bar had risen. She got 8* and four As.
There is nothing exceptional about them. One of my wife’s nephew’s got a First class degree in maths and finance from a very good Russell Group university. He now works as a post man. It has ever been thus.
Stop reading the mainstream press for news about black Britain and talk to your relatives and friends.
I can tell you my story, but won’t.

The research found that every ethnic minority – including groups that had underperformed academically like Black Caribbeans, are now more likely to go to university than white British children.
It also revealed that within social class, poor white British children are substantially behind each ethnic minority group and even wealthy white British children are behind most ethnic minorities, expect Black Caribbeans and other Black individuals.
However, when compared among to individuals of similar class and with similar academic results, wealthy white British children are lagging behind all ethnic minorities.

  39. WW&C

Your figures, although outdated, support my argument, not yours. I was comparing black West Indians to black Africans and Asians. The Asians outperform the Africans and the Africans outperform the West Indians.

Got it? I explained this as a consequence of the differential impact of feminism and drug use.

  40. Chad,
I have spoken numerous times about understanding the nuance. The ethnic adjectival nouns do not mean anything in real terms. They are self-identifications. I have never filled in a question about ethnicity.
The majority of black people born in the UK – the majority of black Britons – go down in the census as black British or British, not West Indians, or African Caribbean. Africans out-perform the Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, with the Chinese coming top, followed by the Hindus. The category Asian is redundant.
@Chad, these statistics have been controversial; the civil servants blocked most of them because, they claim, there might have been a social disturbance. That was an excuse.

Chadster…your argument holds no water, even if you discount the lineage of the original UK Black Moors….most of the Blacks from the 40s and 50s up until today will be of Caribbean heritage, making them at least 3 generations of Caribbean/Brits, they cannot be ignored…….neither can the “other Blacks”….who they failed to identify.

Caribbean Blacks are not even immigrating to UK like before…and have not fir the last 20 years or so, the Caribbean Brits Blacks I know were born in UK…. …their parents immigrated in 40s and 50s….some before, their children are all born in UK….so you are identifying the wrong people as Caribbean Blacks.

Of course you would never understand the dynàmic at play.
