The Poetry of BROWNES BEACH

If the people of Barbados were to make an inventory of the national assets of their country, Brownes Beach would be right up there at the top of the list!
Not only is Brownes Beach one of the most physically beautiful beaches in the world, but it is also a place of social beauty– a beach on which one can witness and experience the authentic culture and spirit of the Barbadian people.
Now that– in the spurious name of “progress” – — Brownes Beach is being threatened with destruction, I would like to urge ALL Barbadians to visit this unique beach as a matter of urgency, and to walk the entire length of the beach and absorb the “Brownes Beach experience” for themselves.
They will discover the “poetry” of Brownes Beach, and will come to the realization that we have to fight– to raise our voices, to protest, to agitate– in order to preserve OUR Brownes Beach!
Kamau Brathwaite is our greatest Bajan poet and actually grew up on Brownes Beach. Here is one of his poetical masterpieces about:-
BROWNES BEACH
Of all the beaches on the bay
browns beach was the proudest place
big respectable houses of big respectable people
looked onto the beach at browns bay
the pilot live there
mr queen the big able pilot who know
when the big ships came and went far out
in the bay with his tell-tail flag till his boat
went down where you watch
from the shore to only the tall-tail flag
that flow till the big ships came
mr queen was cock of the walk on the beach
for he brought great pride to the place
and his boat in the bay is the where-to-meet
for all the boys on the beach about
they would splash with feathers of foam at their feet
and climb the gunwale of this meetingplace
they look like ants on a piece of cake
and they sit and are happy like birds in a bush
mr queen the pride of the place who doesn’t
like ants nor birds
in his bush
would look from the window of his upstairs
room and call to his man in de yard below
to chase the boys out-a-de boat
his man have a limp and a wave of hand
as he rush down the beach
to do what the beard-
man said

he shouted
across the smooth Sunday water where the girls
played shrill
…hoiiiiii…
he shouted
across the blue wind-whipped water to the boat
where all the boys from the beaches were still
hoiiii…there…you black #*&##!!! bastards…,

and his voice from the shore is a shake
of their cake
a stone in the bush
and
chow
went the water when the beachboys jump
and the water wear wreaths where they disappear
and
wham
went the water when the land-boys jump from the
rocking boat
and they splash-up vines as they reappear
when adam jump he see the akee tree
and the tamarin tree with the man-face seeds
and the coconut tree in the neighbour yard
and the shine on the galvanize roofs
that look at the bay on browns beach
and the men on the beach building pyramids
and the flash of the bat of the boys playin
cricket and the girls playin shrill
in that part of the sea that ended with wish
on the shore
and
the water went
chow
as he close his eyes

Of course you would support Maloney 100%. How is it that you did not support Pemberton and his cohorts with the Four
Seasons failed project, before it was dumped on the Government? For your information the Cornwallis was not sunk, it was torpedoed but it did not sink. Goes to show, as I told you before, because a project is postponed does not mean it has been abandoned or has failed.

Who are the investors in Hilton and Needhams Point Development? Whether you and those who think like you like it or not a solution to the garbage disposal has to be found. The Plasma Gasification Plant as designed, would have posed no danger to the people of Barbados as you postulated. From the beginning (2013-14) there were many players who did not want to see that project succeed for their own reasons. I told you that the players saw the economic value in the garbage disposal business, and the increase in the number of players in the last two to three years shows that I was right.
so don’t come to me with any talk about lack of credibility. I was and am right. What has happened to your professor who was proposing an alternative plant to be constructed at Vaucluse; in the vicinity of the area designated for the PLASMA GASIFICATION PLANT.
Give me your solution to the landfill problem; a problem that is very real. Where would you construct the next Mount Stinker?

Hyatt investment in barbados is all worth whilem Hyatt does not need barbados to be sucess. Hyatt has built its name and reputation world wide and will continue to do so with or without barbados. There are those wolves in sheep clothing who have been trying to sabotage barbados better interest meanwhile their activism falls short of adressing the moral fabric of a country where a culture of guns and drugs have is fast becoming a trade.

Look Alvin ignore the snide remarks. They have won a battle but the war of finding solutions for the mountain of garbage is still on .One way or another barbados would have to face the reality that finding a solution to garbage is contingent on WTE plant

Many in this forum do not understand how to debate, exchange different perspectives, agree to disagree. It is all about defending a position to death. How stupid is such an approach when discussing soft issues? No wonder we find ourselves in this pridicament, blindly supporting human beings many who were failures in their professional lifes.

On serious note, page 27 of today’s Daily Nation contains a Sandy Lane Hotel vacancy advertisement for a Chef de Cuisine. Deadline for applications is Saturday August 20, 2016.
Look out for another notice, within the next week, stating Sandy Lane Hotel did not receive suitable applications for the post of Chef de Cuisine and is looking to recruit a non-national.
These hotel owners have us by the balls, and in such a position that we can’t wriggle out.

I HAVE FOUND DEEP, HARD ,TAXING, CHALLENGING ISSUES WITH OFTEN BRUTAL RESPONSES GLAZED WITH SELF OPINIONATED RHETORIC.
AS A GENTILE PERSON AT HEART THAT WAS A STAUNCH REALITY.
HOWEVER I HAVE PREPARED MYSELF TO WEATHER THE STORMS OF LIFE FOR MANY YEARS NOW BY EQUIPPING MYSELF FIRST WITH AN OPEN MIND TO SEEK FOR TRUTH AND EMBRACE IT WHEREVER IT MAY BE FOUND.

ARMING OURSELVES WITH HIS WORD AS WRITTEN IN THE SCRIPTURES
BECOMING ACQUAINTED WITH HISTORY AND CURRENT WORLD EVENTS WHEREBY WE DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES AS THOSE GONE BEFORE US.

The point is that when discussing soft issues one must appreciate that there is no black an white, no easy path to what is right.
