Today (10/05/2016) a No Confidence Motion brought by the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) is scheduled to be debated in the House of Assembly. The motion is anticipated to discuss government’s mismanagement of the economy – the several downgrades, Sandals, Cahill Energy among others. Not many except the overly optimistic BLP supporter expects the government to demit office as a result of the motion. However the Opposition gets the opportunity in the glare of public view to articulate concerns for the general public to draw conclusions.

  1. A recap of today’s news posted by:

Stephanie: "Good Mornings #realdreamchasers! Here is your daily newscap. JONES MUST HUMBLE – A FORMER SCHOOL BOARD CHAIRMAN who was on the receiving end of the Ronald Jones-Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) wrath says Jones should humble himself and meet the union. Pastor Vincent Wood, of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, was chairman of the St Leonard’s Girls’ Secondary School board during a fierce 1992 industrial dispute with the BUT over environmental conditions at the Richmond Gap, St Michael school. On Sunday he touched on the matter during a service and later spoke with the DAILY NATION.Jones as Minister of Education has resisted giving in to the demand by BUT president Pedro Shepherd for a face-to-face meeting over issues that include violence in schools, appointments and environmental issues at schools. NO NEED FOR WAR – PRIME MINISTER Freundel Stuart says there is no stand-off between the Ministry of Education led by Ronald Jones and the trade unions. He also said violence had been a facet of the schools in Barbados from the time he was a boy attending Boys’ Foundation School and during the ten years he worked as a teacher.Stuart was speaking to the ongoing saga between the Barbados Union of Teachers, the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union and the Ministry of Education and warned that taking extreme positions would not get very far in relieving any challenges.“Everything must not be elevated to the status of a war. If there are 1 000 problems in education, the Ministry of Education has to deal with one first and then the second and then the third and then the fourth. It cannot deal with all one time,” Stuart said at a Democratic Labour Party St Peter branch meeting at the All Saints Skills Training Centre on Sunday night. SHORTAGE OF NURSES– Pressure is building in the local health care sector, with the president of the Barbados Nurses Association (BNA) Blondelle Mullin yesterday sounding a serious warning to Government that immediate action needs to be taken to remedy the current nurses shortage.Speaking at the launch of Nurses Week during a church service at the Pegwell Community Church on Sunday, Mullin reported that the situation was already approaching crisis point in a number of general wards, where nurses were now forced to attend to as many as 12 patients at a time. She further explained, “In the general wards that have 24 beds, and you would have two or three nurses working with those 24 patients.”As a result, she said some nurses were now forced to work double shifts, in addition to caring for a higher quota of patients. The BNA president also reported that the current shortage was impacting negatively on training, since nurses were not being allowed to go on study leave. Currently there are 3,419 registered nurses, 1,609 nursing assistants, 1,207 midwives, 804 psychiatric nurses, 14 gerontology nurses, and 1,553 nursing auxiliaries employed at Government-run health care institutions. APOLOGISE TO & REHIRE NCC WORKERS – FORMER GENERAL SECRETARY of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), Sir Roy Trotman, has two main demands on behalf of the severed workers of the National Conservation Commission (NCC). During his close to 90-minute submission when the Employment Rights Tribunal resumed its hearing yesterday, he called for the workers to be rehired, and an apology given.“You ask me what I want? I want the people to get back their work and the proper process to be followed; and the Government and the NCC to apologise,” he said in response to NCC counsel Mitch Codrington.Just over two years after 194 workers were sent home from the NCC, Sir Roy said the last in, first out rule, which was written into the last memorandum of understanding with the NCC, was not followed. OIL DEAL – IN A FEW MONTHS, drilling for oil and gas will commence off the shores of Barbados. Yesterday the Black Belly Block located off the island’s West Coast was awarded to Spanish company Repsol S.A. as part of the Barbados Offshore Petroleum Programme, which was launched in 2007.Jamar White, acting director of natural resources in the Ministry of Energy, revealed that in April last year BHP Billiton had been awarded the Carlisle Bay and Bimshire blocks to the south of the island and work was expected to start within the coming months.“We are very close to having that work completed so that the company can begin its work in earnest in offshore Barbados. WORKING TOWARDS DECLINE – Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler is giving the assurance that Government is still working towards a June 30 deadline for the appointment of customs officers, and by extension the transition of the Customs Department to the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA). However, he said that should the process not be completed by then he would seek parliamentary approval for a supplementary vote to continue to pay the customs officers “until such time as that process is completed and the transition takes place”. Working towards declineAdded by Marlon Madden on May 10, 2016.Saved under Local News, PoliticsinShare1Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler is giving the assurance that Government is still working towards a June 30 deadline for the appointment of customs officers, and by extension the transition of the Customs Department to the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA).However, he said that should the process not be completed by then he would seek parliamentary approval for a supplementary vote to continue to pay the customs officers “until such time as that process is completed and the transition takes place”.“Our target date for transition has been set at the end of June. [That] is when the provision has been made in the Estimates for payment of the customs officers in their current designation, but that of course is contingent on that process being completed,” Sinckler said.He said the process had already begun with interviews already conducted, persons shortlisted and some appointments have already been made. The minister added that he expected the terms and conditions would be completed before the deadline.“So it is a work in progress and the sooner it is done the better. Obviously the unfinished state of the business is affecting people at all levels and of course affecting the country’s capacity to protect its borders, to raise the revenue it has to raise through those means and so forth. So we want to make sure it is wrapped up as quickly as possible to the satisfaction of all involved as far as we can do that,” he said. The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), the workers’ representative, has demanded that vacant positions be filled before the transition takes place. The union also wants settlement of issues surrounding terms and conditions of work and pensions. So far appointments have been made to the grade of Customs Officer 1, but the Customs Officer 2 and 3 grades are still pending.Sinckler could not immediately say how many people have been appointed or how many positions have been filled. In relation to the pensions, Sinckler said there was a “small amendment” to be made to a section of the Pensions Act. SINCKLER WELCOMES UAE DEAL – Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler fully supports the idea of a United Arab Emirates (UAE) proposal by Minister of Agriculture Dr David Estwick to help grow the Barbados economy. However, he agreed it would have to be “explored” to find out whether it was feasible.Following a recent trip to the Middle East, Dr Estwick spoke of having discussions with the Arabs about having the Caribbean become the new “bread basket” for the entire Gulf region, with Barbados serving as a transshipment hub, a trade hub and a tourism hub and capitalizing on its easterly location.Sinckler said while he was not yet aware of the details of the discussion between Dr Estwick and the Arabs, he welcomed any opportunity that provided for the island to expand its economy and create jobs.He said Dr Estwick’s full report was scheduled to go to Cabinet soon. MOVEMENT OF MONEY A WORRY – THE CENTRAL BANK is worried that individuals and businesses could use underground methods to move money across jurisdictions unless a solution is found to the correspondent banking problems facing the region. Governor Dr DeLisle Worrell, who was featured in the most recent IBFS Newsletter which focuses on the international financial services sector, said: “If a solution is not found, the countries and individuals who no longer have access to the services of international banks, either directly or through the correspondent relationship of local banks, will have to conduct their financial and foreign exchange transactions outside of the international system of licensed financial institutions.”He warned that under these conditions, international transactions would be “much riskier” and “it would mean that no information on these transactions would be reported to the regulators”.The governor stressed that a solution was needed that reduced the burden on banks to collect and report detailed information. KELLMAN WANTS MORE FOR ST. LUCY – Minister of Housing and Lands Denis Kellman says he is serious about developing community tourism in the north of the island. The Member of Parliament for St Lucy told a Democratic Labour Party (DLP) branch meeting in St Peter last night he was committed to pressing ahead with development plans he had for Archer’s Bay and North Point in his constituency.Kellman did not go into details, however, about the kind of development he was proposing or the time frame for bringing the projects to fruition, only suggesting that hosting mass events would be possible as a result. The Government representative said he had already spoken to Minister of Culture and Sport Stephen Lashley about the possibility of having St Lucy play host to more cultural events. DLP TURNS UP HEAT – The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is ready to turn up the heat on the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in St Peter.Addressing a branch meeting in the rural constituency last night, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart expressed confidence that the ruling party would claim the seat in the next general election, which is constitutionally due in 2018.St Peter has long been a Barbados Labour Party (BLP) stronghold, held by former Prime Minister Owen Arthur for the past three decades. However, he currently sits as an Independent in the House of Assembly following his resignation from the BLP in July 2014.Hotelier and former president of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) Colin Jordan will contest the seat for the BLP in the next general election. He is expected to go up against lawyer and former teacher Dave Cumberbatch for the DLP. Stuart said the DLP was committed to going into the northern parish “over the next few months” leading up to the next general election “because we want to establish a more permanent presence in the constituency of St Peter. Recalling that it was the DLP that led the country to Independence in 1966, Stuart said in the first general elections ten years prior, the DLP only secured four seats. TAKE EVIDENCE OF GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION TO DPP – PRIME MINISTER FREUNDEL STUART has told anyone who believes there is corruption in his Government to take the evidence to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and let him start a prosecution. “I believe that if there is dirtiness in public life, that dirtiness has to be cleaned up,” said Stuart as he spoke at the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) St Peter branch meeting at the All Saints Skills Training Centre in Mile-and-a-Quarter, on Sunday. He made the comments against the background of a no-confidence motion brought against his Government by the Opposition Barbados Labour Party, expected to be heard in the House of Assembly today. “Every week you hear some dark hint about which minister of the Crown is corrupt; I hear the word being used by our adversaries. “If anybody has any evidence against any minster of the Crown that that minister has been corrupt and they want to be taken seriously, do not tell me. Go to the DPP, carry the information you have. . . ” AGARD ON DRUGS, GUN & AMMO CHARGES – A 1st Avenue Gooding Road, Station Hill, St Michael man who appeared in court today on gun, ammunition and drugs charges, has been remanded to Dodds prison.Kirk Duane Erskine Agard, 36, was not required to plead to any of the six indictable charges which Magistrate Douglas Frederick read to him in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.Agard is accused of unlawful possession of a firearm and five rounds of ammunition, possession of cannabis, intent to supply, trafficking the drug and having apparatus fit for use in connection with cannabis. The offences were allegedly committed on May 6.Police allegedly seized a .38 handgun containing five rounds of ammunition and 500 grams of cannabis after executing a search warrant at Agard’s residence last Friday. The accused, who was represented by attorney-at-law Angella Mitchell-Gittens, will return to the District ‘A” Magistrates’ Court on June 6. SHOOTER PLEADS GUILTY – TREMAINE RAHEEM BARROW accidentally shot one man with a gun he was holding for another, and now he is waiting on the court to decide his fate.Barrow, of Blenman Road, Ellerton, St George, was on trial in the No. 5 Supreme Court for murder yesterday when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the killing of Shamar Ifill on June 11, 2014.The encounter at a football game was revealed when Principal Crown Counsel Anthony Blackman recounted events of the night of June 10, 2014.Both Barrow and Ifill separately attended a football game in Ellerton. While there, Jamal Pin Up Taylor, a friend of Barrow, asked him to keep a gun for him because he wanted to go to a shop to make a purchase. Well that’s all folks. Have a great day. 🙂 Shalom <3 Steph."

And, once again, matters above the comprehension of the average Bajan voter will be expounded.

There will be no economic recovery under Fumble’s Fools. The only thing voters understand is the emptiness in their pockets, to be somewhat supplemented by bent politicians at election time.

“The best argument against democracy is a ten minute conversation with the average voter”.

Again….Mia is in the position of opposition leadership to give Fruendel what he wants during the no confidence motion, …proof of corruption to take to the DPP to prosecute DLP ministers who take bribes etc, etc.

if she dont, she is just wasting everyone’s time, more taxpayer’s money…and is just what we all suspected.

  4. OMG, more long talk..! Every now and then Mia gets an idea..!

  5. The opposition has already put forward a defensive startegy under a superficial guise to remove the sting of losing in the event they cannot garner sufficient votes which would be a cause or reason of having PM remove
All along before this motion was tabled the verbosity of the blp operatives and opposition was predicated on the intent of govt removal resulting from the no confidence vote
Now we have an opposition backing away from previuos intention fully aware that the cart load of “commotions”was heading down the wrong road.it is obvious from the blp backtracking they have realised a deficit in their judgement and have resorted to a ” better safe than sorry strategy”

  6. Well Well & Consequences Avatar
    Well Well & Consequences

Nuisances both of them….Fruendel throwing shade and calling bluff, Mia weak and unable to call Fruendel’s bluff….both nuisances sucking taxpayer’s money.

  7. There is no doubt Mia and the BLP’s intervention to publicize the Cahill Energy Scam mobilized a passive Barbados to agitate and advocate against the project, with some success. It will be interesting to see what revelations she and the BLP members have up her sleeve to add momentum to Cahill. There is no doubt this government is on the defensive concerning its economic performance, in almost every facet of governing.

  8. “All along before this motion was tabled the verbosity of the blp operatives and opposition was predicated on the intent of govt removal resulting from the no confidence vote…”

This particular AC yard-fowl is definitely not the usual “AC,” but the political shiite diatribe is the same.

You are a LIAR; Mottle, y said “up front” that the PURPOSE of the no confidence motion was NOT intended to force this piss poor do little DLP administration out of office, but to FORCE ministers to SPEAK about certain issues on which they have remained EXTREMELY silent.

According to the April 9, 2016 edition of CaribFlame News:

Opposition Leader Mia Mottley told a news conference that over the past 13 weeks, the country has been on auto pilot “lurching from crisis to crisis.

“We cannot have a government by stealth, a government by rumour and a government by anonymity,” Mottley said, adding that this all adds up to “no government at all”.

She told reporters that there was a “CULTURE OF SILENCE” within the government “which is unacceptable given the DIRE STATE of AFFAIRS in the country today”.

She said that the BLP met on Thursday night “against the background of 13 weeks of Barbados lurching from crisis to crisis and the continued suffering of Barbadians and we passed and agreed that we would next week file a motion of no confidence in the government of Barbados.

Mottley said that the BLP does not believe that “Barbados can continue to coast, or indeed drift for another 22 months on a platform of indifference, incompetence and indeed corruption.

“And to that extend Barbadians NEED to be given the facts. This motion of no confidence is NOT about HAVING the PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY, because we clearly DO NOT have the parliamentary majority, but it is ABOUT BRINGING the FACTS to the PEOPLE of the country because Barbadians deserve the right to be able to determine their future and their destiny,” she added.

You have come into this forum in an attempt to mislead BU’s “reading audience” with your political propaganda. But, this is what the DLP is paying you to do.

No matter how much you try to “spin,” you must accept that Barbadians are fed up of “Robin” Stuart and his band of “merry men.”

    Artax

You are so right about this particular AC compared to the other ACs. As for Mottley, she is approaching the motion with a difference that is necessary to foster any support for her third no confidence motion. She has enough facts to shoot at 3-PM and his band of mutes.

It makes a whole lot of sense putting the ball on their side of the court to report on the many idiotic things decided by them that they have refused to address publicly with status reports and regular updates.

This motion is going to be one of credibility, truth, and exposure. If the Stuart of the Democratic Labour Party Branch Meetings and Loyal Supporters (DLPMLS) and his lot choose to play dumb and try to side track the issues with a number of irrelevancies, they are going dig far deeper graves for themselves than the ones that they have been digging for the last eight years.

  10. The cries for the call for resignations of govt ministers is well known and has been the driving force behind past and present no confidence motions tabled by the leadership of the opposition. Sorry but this eleventh hour attempt of backtracking is an indication of indecisive leadership and a very high probabity of not having the much needed support within her party

    He would say that.

His teefin boss David Thomson showed them all how to take bribes above board in the form of legal and professional fees. If the idiot had run the $3m teefing CLICO cheque through his books and paid VAT it would be beyond criticism. A lawyer can give you one minute’s worth of advice in a rumshop and send you a $3m bill.

But he didn’t, he chose to rob the VAT and taxman too, not to mention CLICO shareholders.

To be clear, current extortion is solicited as legal and professional fees through facilitator-friendly individuals and phantom businesses like the sugar industry consultancy company registered in St. Lucia.

I wonder if the DPP knows about that?

It takes an educated person to process ‘legal and professional fees through friendly individuals’. I must either be lawyer, trained professional or proper operator to do that.

If anyone does believe that my fees are wrong or my advice is suspect then show the evidence.

It takes an educated person to be able to send the real jokers like the stupid Com of Police or de backrajohnny supervisor of Insurance on leave when investigation are being prepared.

There is that name Maloney again. A number of ‘car suites’ built at Bushy Park WITHOUT town planning approval.

Bushy Park is owned by St. Philip Land Inc., a UK registered company. The land was supposed to be compulsorily acquired by Bajan taxpayers to be the national home for motor sport. To date, the owners have not even agreed a price with gov’t., far less sold it; the land tax bill is still in the owner’s name. Even if they do sell the land to gov’t, the land would be vested in the crown.

So, not only can’t the suites be built but, even if they are, certainly can’t be sold by anyone but the Ministry of Housing and Lands.

“PRIME MINISTER FREUNDEL STUART has told anyone who believes there is corruption in his Government to take the evidence to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and let him start a prosecution.”

    @ Hants

Barbadians know that Stuart is BLUFFING and no one will be PREPARED to CALL his bluff…. That’s the nature of politics.

Today’s edition of the Daily Nation quoted Stuart as having said: “Every week you hear some dark hint about which minister of the Crown is corrupt; I hear the word being used by our adversaries.”

Recall during the 2008 election campaign, this same “sanctimonious hypocrite” Stuart was among the DLP members who traversed the length and breadth of Barbados telling Barbadians that ministers of the former BLP administration were CORRUPT.
At every meeting we “heard some dark hint about which minister of the Crown (was) corrupt;” we heard “the word being used by the DLP who were at the adversaries at that time.”

Recall in September 2008, the late David Thompson said he was convinced that millions of dollars “bizarrely spent” during the previous BLP Administration were now stashed in foreign bank accounts.

Thompson also said: “It is SOMEWHERE hidden and I INTEND to FIND SOME, IF NOT ALL, of it.”

However, being the crafty politician he was, Thompson cleverly “ISSUED a DISCLAIMER” re: “This is 2008 and it is NOT EASY to tap into a person’s PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT and FIND necessary deposits.”

Today’s Nation also reported: “I believe that if there is DIRTINESS in PUBLIC LIFE, that DIRTINESS HAS TO BE CLEANED UP,” said Stuart as he spoke at the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) St Peter branch meeting at the All Saints Skills Training Centre in Mile-and-a-Quarter, on Sunday.”

If Freundel Stuart HONESTLY believes that DIRTINESS in PUBLIC LIFE HAS TO BE CLEANED UP, and believed that there was EVIDENCE of CORRUPTION in the former administration, as was alleged on DLP campaign platforms, surely we must agree that being at the helm of government for the past 8 years and 4 months is MORE than ENOUGH TIME for this DLP administration to have TAKEN the EVIDENCE to the DPP and let him START a PROSECUTION, in an effort to CHARGE those former BLP ministers and bring them before the LAW COURTS, as well as to RECOVER all the MILLIONS of DOLLARS of PUBLIC FUNDS, allegedly deposited in foreign bank accounts.

Also, Stuart and Adriel Brathwaite said they were AWARE of corruption in the 2013 general elections, when they alleged, in innuendo, that the BLP was engaging in “vote buying” and they promised to have that matter investigated.

Vote buying must also be considered as “DIRTINESS in PUBLIC LIFE” and has to be cleaned up as well. Interestingly, the 2018 general elections are almost upon us, and there HAS NOT BEEN ANY ATTEMPT by Stuart or Brathwaite, in their “strategically vital” capacities of prime minister and attorney general respectively, to clean up this dirtiness, by taking the evidence of vote buying to the DDP.

Freundel Stuart is a “dishonest sanctimonious hypocrite,” but I guess that characteristic is a prerequisite qualification to become a politician.

  40. Well Well & Consequences Avatar

Lol….Fruendel should then be able to call the names of corrupt BLP MPs…they all keep covering for each other using bluff, they are all useless to the people and are all covering up corruption.
