Denis Lowe exposing his Doctoral Certificate in parliament
Denis Lowe exposing his Doctoral Certificate

During the Presentation of the Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals 2015 the intelligence of Barbadians was trivialized (or was it) by the debate whether Lowe has earned a Doctorate or leader of the Opposition possesses the requisite qualification to practice law in Barbados. Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur has routinely described contributions to debate in parliament as โ€˜poorakeyโ€™, now there is incontrovertible proof.

The fact the government and cohorts have been allowed to persist with such a serious accusation is a reflection on wider civil society, and importantly the Attorney General of Barbados. The clarification should not have to come from Sir Henry Forde who was one of two persons who recommended Mottley to the Bar of Barbados, what about the independent entities and individuals who could have deflated the political rhetoric the next day? We refer to entities/individuals like the Law Faculty of the University at Cave Hill, Barbados Bar Association, former Attorney General Maurice King et al.ย ย  This is one of the major problems plaguing our little society; we allow political brinkmanship to override the intelligent arguments.

The majority of Barbadians would have preferred Lowe, Sinckler and the others respond to the scathing accusations levelled by the Opposition concerning a lack of transparency and accountability about the Cahill Energy Waste to Energy Plant matter and obvious conflict of interest issues arising from Lowe and Lashley leasing luxury vehicles from Trans Tech Inc.

BU reserves our biggest disappointment for Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite who promised to investigate the matter and advise Barbadians of his findings. Commonsense suggests the gravitas of two ministers who sit on the front bench questioning the bona fides of a leader of opposition to practice law should be considered a priority issue. Brathwaite has allowed his political affiliation to besmirch the office of the Attorney General.ย  Then again this is an Attorney General who promised to act on sighting irregularities during the last general election. This is an Attorney General who promised new domestic abuse legislation about two years ago. This is the DLP who accused a BLP government of holding the findings of the St. Joseph Hospital Commission Report over the head of the late Branford Taitt and in the process taint his reputation and puncture his legacy. Interestingly, the DLP has not published the report since ascending office.

The refusal of the Prime Minister to touch the issues raised by the Opposition exposes a bug in our governance system. Who will debug it?

The debate which continues about the qualification of the leader of the opposition and minister Lowe is an indictment on the quality of governance we practice in Barbados. Anywhere in the world a Speaker of the House who has been found guilty of withholding thousands of dollars from a client, a deputy Speaker who has been named in a serious court matter, or a minister who brandished a gun in a threatening manner in the precinct of parliament would have been severely disciplined and asked to resign by any self respecting nation.

What is democracy? โ€“ โ€œgovernment of the People, by the People, for the People – has come to symbolize the definition of democracyโ€

Eat wunna heart out misfits and the PM is fully qualified as well, to boot.extending to a basket of creditability and integrity towards the PM suffice to say that the 15 members of caricom believe Stuart to be accredited and a person most worthy to be placed in that position.
Tonight as Mia mottley twist and spins her way out of the political mud which she brought on herself . tomorrow it would be interesting to hear if the word Practice takes on a new interpretation/meaning in reference to having a legal certificate in barbados to practice law, maybe just maybe a lot of overseas lawyers in the Diaspora can make there way back to the shores and avoid this ” inconvenience” which Mottley was privileged to have remove from her

    De INgrunt Word;

Glad to see you are beginning to understand the enormity of our situation in Barbados.
Our Government is hopeless, its Leader is the epitomy of mindless hopelessness and our people are predominantly brass bowls (as defined by Bushtea)

  4. The ac’s are so ignorant that they do not even understand that the chairmanship of Caricom is a revolving thing……..each country’s PM gets to be chairman for six months. It just so happen that it is now the turn of the moron we have for a PM.

    You are really sick!

  5. As for Caswell Franklin, poor fella , he did not have time to prepare an article this week so he rehashed his usual “Resign now” tirade and polluted the Sunday newspaper with his partisan foolishness.

Caswell, I always knew you were a BLP yardfowl at heart , now the whole of Barbados has no doubt where you stand and which party you support.

  6. I am not a yard fowl of any type but I have voted DLP all my life. Are you DLP yard fowls really trying to spin what has happened over the last several years in a good light? SERIOUSLY?!!!!! And the issue at hand was obviously a distraction as practised quite often in the “House of Laughs” but even distractions should have some merit in order to be effective. This was just stupid!

I would think that with the availability of the internet “everybody” would be able to access ALL the information on Cahill quite easily, and thus would be able to get the facts. Cahill Energy is a company formed in 1953. Ms. Collymore is not CEO of Cahill Energy. She is a person who formed a company to seek out Venture capitalists to invest in worthwhile projects (Like the Waste to Energy Plants). There are a number of similar Waste to energy Plants already in existence in Canada (Vancouver) and other places. This project could and would place Barbados far ahead of many other countries in solving the garbage problem of the country.
I would encourage all the anti government “followers” to spend some time reading and researching instead of following and then making inane and malicious assertions, and trying to find dirt where none exists. I would even suggest that they; including many who formed paRT OF THE BLP GOVERNMENTS TO TRY AND UNDERSTAND how government works, instead of confusing those of their followers who don’t have a clue about it.
Caswell is in a class by himself. He worked in the Civil Service, but he is blinded by his animosity to the present government that he can no longer (if he actually did) figure out where he stands.

  8. @Alvin Cummins,

Do you have evidence that “Cahill Energy” is in anyway connected to “The Cahill Group” that was formed in 1953?

  9. De Ingrunt Word Avatar

@Alvin, if you are going to suggest that remarks on this subject be raised to a higher level of discourse by spending “…some time reading and researching instead of following and then making inane and malicious assertions”, then let’s do that.

How can the government of a an island this small that relies on its tourism product of beaches and the environment as a major income generator undertake such a project without comprehensive environmental impact studies before any contractual obligations were signed?

How does our government work so that an economy with a GDP of US$4.3B could undertake a project almost 20% of that and the PM and the entire cabinet had not ventilated and discussed in detail before any contractual obligations were signed?

Just a few basic questions in keeping with your aim for reason.

Incidentally, several bloggers here have done a comprehensive and reasonable analysis of this project on the facts and many questions remain.

The attacks on the CEO and Caswell are irrelevant and should not be a focus. Let’s deal with the facts as you request.

  10. Why should taxpayers have to go on the Internet to seek info? A government committed to transparency should be willing to share information. Then again we don’t have FOI in place yet.

We are hearing from Tyrol Cot last night Cahill Energy BARBADOS is connected to JADA et al.

What nonsense!!!!! Alvin Cummins, you must be some kind of a nutโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ. we donโ€™t have to research anything.

Perhaps you forgot this DLP administration promised Barbadians โ€œGood Governnace.โ€ Let me refresh your memory.

The below excerpt was taken from page 47 of the DLPโ€™s 2008 election manifesto:

โ€œUnder a DLP government, the people will be kept informed of what the government is doing on their behalf through:
โ€ข Regular press briefings following meetings of the Cabinet of Barbados
โ€ข Press briefings by Ministries/Departments to inform Barbadians of major developments and changes
โ€ข The publication of details of agreements and contracts involving the government and its agencies
โ€ข Formal Ministerial statements at regular intervals on the progress of ongoing programmes and projectsโ€

Surely you MUST AGREE if the DEMS had kept their promises, as stated above, people would not have any reason to make โ€œinane and malicious assertions, and trying to find dirt where none exists.โ€

“I would think that with the availability of the internet โ€œeverybodyโ€ would be able to access ALL the information on Cahill quite easily, and thus would be able to get the facts. Cahill Energy is a company formed in 1953.”

I believe the company to which you refer as being formed in 1953 is GJ Cahill & Co. Ltd, of St.Johns, Newfoundland, lead company of The Cahill Group.

    See: http://www.cahill.ca

In his “internetting” DD has seen nothing to indicate there is any connection between The Cahill Group, an established group of companies, and Cahill Energy Ltd, a Guernsey based shell company.

I am guessing the “Ms. Collymore” to whom you refer is actually Ms Cowan, CEO of Cahill Energy.

She is indeed a person who formed a company to seek out Venture capitalists to invest in worthwhile projects (Like the Waste to Energy Plants), after first seeking out a small island government gullible enough to believe that her Guernsey based Cahill Energy or its Barbados based shell company subsidiary , has the capital and expertise to deliver a WTE plant. And she found one – in Barbados.

Now that she has got a contract to sell, she is flogging it around the globe in search of gullible investors ,who believe that Barbados will be able to meet its obligations under the contact with Cahill Energy Barbados for 30 years

I would encourage YOU to spend some time reading and researching like BU “follower” RastaR, who clearly has done his research.

Frankly, I have tried my darnedest, without success, to UNDERSTAND how this DLP Government works

    that one, too! !!

    lol

Forde himself is not so clean either, does the privilege still apply today re Mia although it’s plain to see that she would have had to be 15-16 years old to be eligible for the privilege, it is indeed a privilege only and nothing written in stone. Did anyone check with England, Wales or where ever the hell Mia is claiming to be a part of some Inn to see if it even exists anymore.

What would even make anyone take the easy way out by not having a certificate. Unless my reading skills are deteriorating, Mia does not qualify, her entrance to this and that Inn and this and that inner bar took place well after 1984….prior to 1984 means well before 1984, not 1987….unless like the confusion they call civil rules and procedures in Barbados, all the lawyers are now taking it upon themselves to interpret 1984 to be 1987.

This just makes all the idiots in the inner bar and outer bar and the Inns look a whole lot more stupid than the people who are less arrogant than these lawyers.

Is Mia Mottley qualified to practice law in Barbados?

  21. the mia issue goes further to show even more the level of hypocrisy that bajans would tolerate and this is no joke ! .when the leader of the blp is accused of bypassing laws for gain sake that others citizens must follow…The blp yardfowls have been told many times in the past that they have no moral authority to sit in judgement of other people indiscretions yet they take their seat more often than not at the table of moral judgement to sit and falsely accused and render verdict///////Now it is their turn to be openly accused and judge the leadership mia mottley along with the foot soldier run in fear and hiding heading in another direction not bothering to look back at the stench of deception that have floated to the top of their barrel that is following them and that is most likely to expose the corruption that had given way for their leader to fly high above the radar of morals and integrity which they have been preaching and subjected all to be accounted /////now on the exposure of their leaders lack of integrity and so far her refusing to give accountability for what seems to be point blank unsavory dealings they hid in fear of retribution
The uncovering of Mia.,s inability to posses a legal document of requirement to be certified for the bar reveals more than a form of corruption that has helped the powerful and influential in our society which is a well known fact but cannot and should not be left covered up without seeking the proper remedy for correctness especially when the accused Mia Mottley is seeking the highest office in the land, Yes there are givens in such matter to be exercised or excused .however it would be very insensitive and presumptuous and inexcusable and also unforgivable if those in authority do not answer the public call for proper investigation and resolution be done to clear the foul air of deception which now hangs like a dark cloud over what is right ! proper and acceptable in our democracy to be a leader for change in our society,

โ€œthe legal qualification issue is a manufactured non-issue and the people of Barbados are not even interested. we are interested in the scam that is Cahill Energy, who is behind it and the flow of money.โ€

Thatโ€™s true OP, Lowe and Sinckler have been “dilly dallying” around this entire CAHILL issue, with both individuals making conflicting statements pertaining to the matter.

The people are also concerned about the fact that Trans Tech Inc. is given 90% of the Transport Board bus repairs, as well as the trucks from the Sanitation Service Authority and the ministers of under whose portfolios the TB and SSA fall, are driving vehicles owned Trans Tech.

Since this was revealed during the Budget debate, neither Michael Lashley or Denis Lowe has seen it as their duty, as individuals elected to parliament by their constituents, to address this issue and put to rest the debate relative to conflict of interest.

โ€œIt is very insensitive and presumptuous and inexcusable and also unforgivable if (Lashley and Lowe) do not answer the public call for proper investigation and resolution be done to clear the foul air of deception, (corruption and conflict of interest), which now hangs like a dark cloud over what is right.โ€

  25. It is inexcusable the media has not cornered the two ministers to seek answers to the conflict of issue questions.

  26. De Ingrunt Word Avatar
    De Ingrunt Word

David, that is correct. Inexcusable. But it has been such for the year or however long it has been that I first read about this conflict here on BU.

It is a simple question and legitimate story for any of our media houses to interrogate a gov’t minister on such allegations.

It’s even simpler for the minister (particularly one who went to Theology school) to recognize the moral failings of this TransTech scenario.

As some one alluded to on BU any right thinking person would immediately terminate their lease with TransTech to avoid any inkling of a conflict and get the car from Simpsons or wherever.

Clearly these fellas don’t give a damn…. the politicians have no reputation to protect and the journalists who are paid to bring us the facts and news about them are indifferent because they know how crooked they are.

So BU is the behind-the-scenes news source of record these days. Rock on!

  27. Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadians and Canadian-Bajans.

Good to see that Canadian companies appear to be “involved” in the WTE plant.

Canada has a freedom of information act and pitbull investigative reporters. just saying.

  28. @David,

    Inexcusable?

Reporters are employees of the Media houses and said reporters must do the bidding of their bosses or get fired. This is Barbados not Canada.

Let MAM an Co continue the attack in Parliament and at political brass meetings. Let them continue until them call for the Government to resign.

Here is the real test for MAM.

Persuade one or more DLP members to cross the floor and OSA to rejoin the BLP.

That is all you need to bring down the government and pave the way to glory.

  29. @Hants

The advocacy cannot be left to only the political actors. A democracy requires all civil actors to participate.

  30. @David the most import thing to Bajans right now is cropover.

After cropover over and they are well rested then they may be persuaded to worry about the “problems”.

And may I remind you that it is MAM who wants to be Prime Minister of Barbados. I just showed the path of least resistance….maybe.

  31. We shall see when sufficient evedience is provide to prove or disapprove the underground shannigans that approved Mottley special privelege while denying average citizens such a right. Please! the cat is already out of the bag and the legal and political ramifications would hurt but for the better

  32. What we are failing to realise is that these wild boys do not care about a fellow.

For all of the faults of the dead crook, David Thompson, at least he held them in check for a while. Remember he moved the same Dennis Lowe in a cabinet reshuffle soon after it was rumoured that he Lowe text a contractor and asked……….so where is my cut. I do believe that they too knew how crooked the daed king was.

So there you have it, one could not tell the other come back as the old people would say.

However, with this moron we have for a PM who touts himself as not being in anyone’s pocket, why does he not rein in these rouge ministers? Nah…….he defends them, case in point the crooked speaker.

Can we therefore believe the talk that was making the rounds for a while that the ministers told Fumble that if he wants to keep being PM, he better see and dont see? We could only believe this because of the blatant disrespect they show to the House, their constituents and the people of Barbados. I have to believe what a friend of mine has always been saying………….these people never came to serve the people of Barbados, they came to get rich.

Why are we such docile people? Has anyone noticed that the even the calysonians are afraid to write any biting commentaries about this wicked government? Does anyone remember the biting calypsoes especially from Colin Spencer during the BLP years?

…………and at that time the dems fooled the people that there was fear in Barbados……I wonder what we can say now. People are afraid of these morons and their yardfowls, so they are keeping quiet!

  33. Prodigal Son July 1, 2015 at 9:42 AM #

โ€œWhat we are failing to realise is that these wild boys do not care about a fellow.โ€

Prodigal, recall when those former workers who were retrenched from the NCC, the NUPW reminded the ministry of environment that they did not follow the โ€œlast in, first outโ€ protocol, since many of those persons from Denis Loweโ€™s constituency who were hired at the NCC prior to the 2013 general elections remained employed.

PM Stuart acknowledged there were โ€œmissteps in the retrenchment processโ€ and referred the matter to an Employment Rights Tribunal that was nonfunctional at the time.

And we all know that, despite the โ€œmissteps in the processโ€, Lowe remains a minister, while those former NCC employees had to wait over a year before they received their severance payment.

These are the types of issues (NOT an LEC) that will be forever etched in the memories of Barbadians, and they will not forgive the DEMS for the unmerciful acts they unleashed upon poor people.

  34. Amen, Artaxerxes!

  35. What “red herring” to take focus off of what? ,The problem that would continue to haunt and follow Mia to the voting booth would be one of credibilty if not this LEC issue there are others that Mia has not as much answered going as far back as fourteen years.so for the BLP to flag this LEC issue as a red herring is almost as laughable in their desperation to taint and smear minister as selling out barbados when all of barbados knows that in the last election all the talk coming from the BLP was to sell out entites that control the safety and protectiom of our citizenship to private investors by way of paying off the debt. So this attempt to hid and cover for Mia. flaws is also another attempt to give her a passing grade on her failures and to encourage corruption and deception in bajan society

  36. The Blp really got “raw” nerve to be always pointing accusing fingers. Now this new unfounded showdown to discredit govt. under the banner “sell out”makes for great comedy coming from the the blp leader who not only made and was associated with questionable land deals which “up the realestate prices for valuable land on the west coast but all but shut out poor bajans from owning a piece of the rock. This nonsense about the Cahill investors not tendered is ludicrious when her administration not only encouraged such transactions but circumvent rules and guidlines to avert attention which gave them control and adequate legal room to wheel aroumn what ever changes necessary as an afront .It is amazing that the BLP leadership can be so bold face in the face of all her and the Blp handling of country affairs in the past to satisfy a few now drumup unfounded allegations against govt .what hypocricy.

This pretence that some of them are of any caliber intellectually, yet alone high caliber, is really what has Barbados where it is today.

  39. @ Fractured ….

I fully agree that qualifications.. are important….. now you know what is called continuing professional education that many professions have?

Law has that too and it is incumbent that legal advisors including Government, do such.

Many programmes occur in such as USA. So, folks like the lawyers in Government need to attend such to ensure that are up to date and can do their work with current updates.

Why don’t we hear when last, say, Michael Lashley went to USA for one of these conferences to ensure he is up to date with legal trends??

    How about it?

  40. everytime the blp say the word corruption i want to puke as it flashes my mind back to the days of veco and harwood and the many many underground illegal activities done up front in the faces of barbadains, including the now infamous 75thousand check, really are Barbadians now to forget those days of real Corruption. and believe that the ole guard has now have a damascus moment after fourteen years of putting Barbados out to dry.

Look at the list of old crooks who are now ‘SIR’ this and SIR that….

Wuh you feel that if Money B or Lawson had stayed in Brassbados and been set up in construction of precast structures or some such novelty, that they would be up and down the place getting on like a black hat…?
Those folks would have quietly and gracefully explained themselves (while laughing uncontrollably at us brass bowls down Cattlewash)…and gone on to become SIR Money Brain and Sir BU Lawson…..

  46. The Cahill, Transtech, Maloney, Central Bank and other issues are beginning to prod Bajans. It is disappointing how we have allowed the political class to drag us into the mud. Then greed will do it every time.

  47. It will shock the AC’s and the Fractureds’ that Edwy Talma and Norman Niles had no formal legal education,no LLB,no LEC,yet they were permitted by law to be be referred to and to practice as Attorneys at Law in Barbados. And I know of a close relative who was educated in London UK and practiced in the UK and Wales and who was admitted to the local bar in 1995.This is still the practice here in Barbados. The LEC is not a requirement if you are called to the bar in the UK
One more thing. There was a time when a QC had to be at a minimum holding an LLB.Nowadays in Barbados we have QC’s who only had bar qualification and some with an LLB who can’t write a decent brief and whose English language skills are zilch. This is one of the reasons why we are witness to a bunch ‘o wild boys in a poor rakey parliament in Barbados since 2008.They are nothing but dog puke.
