Government Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner today hit out at the president of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Guild of Students Damani Parris for not thanking Minister of Education Ronald Jones for coming through with bursaries to help Barbadian students pay tuition fees Barbados Today 25 March

My, my, my, what a tirade!

It seems that this Government really has its back to the wall. What a condescending attitude taken by the Senator. Would she have referred to any of the other heads of unions/organizations as “people like him”? Who are the people like him, Senator Sandiford-Garner? Methinks that you owe, not only the young man, but the whole of this country an apology for such a derogatory statement. All he was doing was giving the UWI Cave Hill campus the type of representation they would expect of him, or anyone else who is head of the guild. And this from a member of this “people-centred Government”!

For what should they be grateful? That the Minister of Finance refused to make the money accessible in time just because the Minister of Education was so bold as to announce the bursaries in July without his consent? Was it necessary to upbraid him in such a way publicly?

The Minister of Finance took his sweet time in allowing the money to be disbursed, so that many of the students were left with no other option but to drop out – and you are talking codswallop about being grateful. Is he to  be grateful for those who had to drop out for a lack of tuition fees, or those whose parents/guardians who can afford to pay the horrendous fees for some of the courses on the curriculum?

The bursaries were too late!

What do you want him to say if they were?

They were too late because the Minister of Finance did not find it necessary to release the funds to cover the bursaries before many students who – unlike some other students whose parents/guardians have the wherewithal to pay the exorbitant fees for medicine, law, etc. – were forced to drop out, and you talk about being “brother’s keepers”?

How are you being “your brother’s keepers” Senator Sandiford-Garner? By demolishing everything which was set up for the poor, the needy, and the vulnerable in our society? Or overtaxing this country, and still the taxpayers can not see what they are being taxed for?

Barbados has the highest rate of taxation in CARICOM, and one of the highest in the world, yet we must pay through our noses for everything, but according to the Auditor General’s Report you can waste millions of the same taxpayers’ money on things for the super rich, by being a country without borders for them and their super yachts.

Also lending out the taxpayers’ money to every Tom, Dick and Harry – and the list goes on!

I think that you should climb down from your ivory tower, leave the vehicle – for which the parents/guardians of “people like him” are paying – and hop on a bus, and smell what it’s like to stand around for hours until one finally comes.

What about the mothers who dutifully paid their NIS contributions, and still cannot get their maternity cheques?

What about the Old Age Pensioners who live from cheque to cheque, and had to wait for more than a week longer for them?

Is that being your brother’s keeper?

I don’t hear anyone in this Government thanking the taxpayers of this country for anything. All you did was to try to humiliate Mr. Parris, but I see what you said as nothing more than another red herring. Soon from now we can be exporters of red herring!

Who are more “imbued with a sense of entitlement” than the members of this Government?

It was uncalled for and dismissive, and that is not how a member of the Senate of this “people-centred Government” should behave towards the populace of this country. Did you stop to think that in 2018 you would want to knock at the door of some of these same people like him to beg her/him for a vote?

Would you expect to be welcomed with open arms, Senator?

The Constitution does not provide for first and second class citizens.”

  5. Last time Liz Thompson was in the Senate, she and Irene had a big shout out. It descended into a juvenile tirade by Irene when she repeat for more fifteen minutes : “I got more votes than you”. This was to Liz who had been a Minister of the OSA Administration and who had been elected to the House more than once.

Recently, she had someone from the Nation Newspaper to spend time detailing “her ordeal” during the trail of the young man who stole her phone.

I am clearly confused as to how the good people of St. Andrew could take Irene seriously as fit to be a potential member of the Lower House.

She boosts about attending Queens College, but not about leaving when she did not have to required “O” Levels to continue to the Sixth Form.

Yet, we sit here and are surprised at her childish fraudulent disposition!!!

    @ Lemuel.

In your post at 11.15 p.m. You summarize so eloquently the predicament we Bajans find ourselves in.

We have voted for brass bowls yet seem amazed when they do brass bowlery

It is not that you wish to cast ad hominem remarks all the time BUT the facts are that “you cannot make silk purses out of sows’ ears”

We voted for a series of bvhkvnts at the ballot boxes two years ago and five years before that and five years before that.

We will do the same cvntery in 2018 as sure as day follows night.

We have Georgie Porgie, the calypsonian Jerkoff Gearbox and an assembly of ingrunt, incompetent representatives running the cvntry and wonder why, all over the place, we are in a pile of excrement

  7. The Parris she should curse Dem kissing..classless and illiterate to say the least…No leader so everyone say and do what ever they feel like..Even the Boat yard people…Country sick cause the head sick, condescending, deceitful, lying and fulling they guts without a care…

  8. We have to be fair to the Senator, she is on record explaining the role of a government Senator is to defend government’s position. Did she go too far with her idiotic defense of Minister Ronald Jones? The answer is obvious. It is one of many insensitive remarks government ministers have routinely visited on taxpayers. A new dawn beckons.

These bitches took everything the PM before gave the people , They are use of robbing the dead, Even Violet Beckles and Beatrice Henry as soon as you are dead all is taken by those who want to live off others,

No need for him nor any student to be grateful after putting student , parents and the Nation minds in to worry,

Thats like thanking the England for freedom after being enslaved, for feeding you after taking your land , Or telling you we have a bill for the ship ride over

All of them ALL need to be removed , they are Ebola of Barbados , killing you faster than Aids,

He did what he was to ,and he did he better than the Minister, Thank he for doing her job , well paid and over paid, But they have 100Million for the Port?

  10. This site was recommended to me; but as I read the above remarks, it makes me wonder about the broader injustice in our current society. It seems that it is okay for people who use this site to make comments insulting the government, calling the various ministers names and using your so call freedom of speech is okay for the users of this site. But it is not okay for the ministers to speak out. When that young man with the help from the opposition was being abusive to the government. Why wasn’t he told that he should apologise.

  11. The issue here is simple. The minister of education (government) promised bursaries and then the offer was withdrawn which caused negative consequences. The government recognizing the folly of the situation attempted to retrieve the situation and said government through a functionary (Irene) has poured political oil on the ‘waters’ at the mention of apology.

  13. The expectation of gratefulness in this context seems inappropriate.

You take away from me something left me by my forefathers, in a manner that was quite haphazard and unplanned, and when you finally decide to give me back a tiny fraction of it I am supposed to be grateful.

These bursaries are not the personal gift of the Minister of Education funded from his own pocket; they come from the taxes paid by the people of Barbados.

And why should the President of the Guild be crucified for doing his job of representing the interests of students?

  14. Both sides of the coin must come under scrutiny if you heap scorn on Sandiford -Garner for mouthing a few choice words on the Parris boy . Didn’t Parris write the Prime Minister a threatening letter giving the head of state an ultimatum? Where was his respect for the office of the PM? To get respect you have to give respect. From the spectacular failure of the march organized by Parris in concert with the opposition Parris set out his stall as a bow tie wearing clown anxious for a showdown with government. He started on the wrong premise with a nasty attitude. If you start wrong you end wrong.

    @ Olu Waldrond

It is a very strange thing, something that has become the norm for all politicians in Bulbados best described by “the Seal Bulla or the Papal Bull”.

The “Seal Bulla” is a “charter” issued to a pope or high-up clergythat confers specific powers for want of another word much like an embossed company stamp.

A prostitution of the same term entered into the barbadian lingo circa 1970, “he gave him the “bulla or buller” which meant that someone got a comeuppance, or their right desserts or just got messed up royally.

However, in the context of this issue of Mrs Garners’ behaviour, it is to be seen as “right of passage”, much like that Nebuchadnezzar-esque passage that caused their first recorded example of this megalomania to utter the words “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?”

And while you and I wait for the more spectacular results that befell that fellow i.e. “The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws” what we are rewarded with is these rantings and ravings of the breed of DLP and BLP that you and I have voted for.

A different type of Bulla that we in Bulbados are well accustomed to Mr. Waldrond and which had fueled and will continue to fuel the empty vessels like Irene Sandiford Garner, Ronald WeJonesing, Chris Stinkliar, Trevor Prescod, Dale Skin he Teets Marshall and the rest of these cattle we call politicians

“…To get respect you have to give respect.”

Truer words could not come from the mouth of a person worth no more than two cents of commonsense.

So you see why both the P M and the MoF can’t even receive two cents worth of respect from the populace?
Both give no respect to the people with their arrogance lies and regurgitating broken promises.
Why would decent people be expected to respect a man who makes it abundantly clear he is prepared to go to the ends of the Earth to protect a man who has committed blatant fraud and swindled thousands of hardworking citizens because the morally leprous man is his bosom pal.

Even a bald pooch cat would get more respect than any of them.

  21. What is the risk likely to develop if members of the political class continue to be so callous in its communication to the electorate? Recently we had the MOF dismissing concerns about the length if time concessions promised to the BHTA have been outstanding. If you knew from the beginning you were stringing them along you are nothing more than a liar.

    @ BajCan

Tell me what the young man should apologize for?

I am the president of the guild of students with a membership of 5000 students prior to the DLP hardship scourge.

Upon being appointed president of the guild my constituents approach me and tell me that if i dont do something their numbers WILL DECREASE.

No remember that I was elected EXACTLY LIKE how the same politicians that are the focus of my campaign were elected. by virtue of a manifesto.

I pledged unlike my predecessor Austin, son of the DLP representative for St James ??, to represent the interest of my depleted Student guild who now number 2500 students.

I wont waste my time going into the well exhausted topic of “whether students should be paying, or if the $$ amount being requested should have been implemented on a scale and all of that shyte”

I am just going to ask you, what is the young man supposed to apologise for??

“Too Late the Hero” was a War movie that the ole man got to see 45 years ago. The name sticks in my memory as does Michael Caine and Henry Fonda.

The so called assistance CAME TOO FVCKING LATE with a casaulty rate of 2500 students.

Do you unnerstan what that means to the lives of 2500 men and women who had to withdraw?

No siree cause you up there in Canada or wherever wunna people does be smoking wunna recreational drugs, pontificating on how grateful Damani Parris should be while poor black Bajans trying to educate themselves and improve their positions in a cvntry where the government of the day are a buch of nitwits trying to run the cvntry into true banana republic status.

We dont have a choice outside coming to this here site and taking “pot shots” at these CVNTS, anything else is suicide, in fact even this is suicide cause it only takes a few of your friends to sell you out as they will always do and you are pariah.

But that would be lost on you in democratic Canada or wherever you just crept from to post your sanctimonious post about respect for despots and inept politicians.

    Wheel and Wheel again….

“WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT! YOU MEAN THEY HAVE ANOTHER JENNY ASS IN BIM BESIDES AC?”

Shiite, Georgie, you mean you doubted me all this while I’ve been telling BU that Irene is one of the ACs? If you compare any of Irene speeches to some of the legion’s contributions, the similarities are blatantly obvious.

As usual, she does talk a lotta shiite. After declaring herself the “defacto representative” of St. Andrew during the 2008 general election campaign, she contested that seat and lost, being defeated again in 2013. Fruendel rewarded Irene for being a losing candidate, by appointing her a senator and parliamentary secretary.

With almost 4,000 civil servants being retrenched and former NCC employee awaiting their severance payments for over one year, this DLP administration can boast as being the only one in the history of Barbados to have such a large cabinet, and no consideration has been given to reduce its size.

Included is Irene, a loser, who is being given free money, along with Regiie Hunte, to talk shiite in the senate.

  29. If you can’t take the criticism from the people that elected you, and who your supposed to represent than find another occupation besides that of a politician. You need a little humility, and to act like you have an education, and common sense than that of an alley rat.

  30. @ Prodigal

“ac March 26, 2015 at 7:40 PM #: prodigal here is somethimg for u to chew on: Auditors general March 2007: Advances and Loans: The contingent liabilities in respect of loans guaranteed by the government of Barbados at 31st March2007amounted to $869,481,774.00.”

Prodigal, the above comments reminded me of the following AC post:

“ac March 24, 2015 at 6:10 AM # : YOU GUYS COMMENT ON FINANCES IN THE MOST RETARDED WAY. MEANING THAT LOOKING AT FIGURES THROUGH MISGUIDED POLITICAL LENSES WOULD GIVE THE DESIRED CONCLUSION ONE EXPECTS, HOWEVER IT TAKES A MORE IN DEPTH ANALYSIS with a thorough respect and overview as to what are the causes in relation to spend affecting the changes in budgetary cost per item, JUST NIT PICKING AND THROWING NUMBERS ON PAPER TO PREVIEW IS NOT GOOD MANAGEMENT BRINGING FACTS TO VERIFY IT NECESSARY.”

Firstly, the ACs contributions that seek to admonish other BU contributors ALWAYS come back to haunt them [ACs].

Secondly, a liability is a balance sheet account. This basically means, unlike income statement accounts which are closed at the end of each financial year, balance sheet accounts contains the accumulated balances brought forward at the end of each financial year.

A simple way to differentiate between the two: income statement accounts, would be noted, e.g. “Travel Expenses” for the YEAR ENDED March 31, 2007. Balance sheet accounts would be noted, e.g. “Contingent Liabilities” AS AT March 31, 2007.

Therefore, it is erroneous to suggest that “contingent liabilities” for the FINANCIAL YEAR ENDED March 31, 2007 were $869,481,774.00, since this total includes amounts accumulated over previous financial years.

  31. Barbados Today is right, its “Graner’s concern”.Just like her, poor articulation of the English language to spew nonsense. To besmirch the character of a man known to be humble very mannerly disrespectful and cowardly. If the apology was merited he would have given it.Here is a man who had to endure a very embarrassing tenure as the President of the Guild of Students, organizing a protest in the interest of students whom themselves showed very little support.

Say sorry my ass, Mr Parris , ignore the clown.”People like you” deserve the education, while “people like her” got it and did nothing substantial.
