We have always blamed the West Indies Cricket Board, of Control (WICB)(C) and their regional members for the persistent failures in West Indies cricket and we intend to continue in this vein. The successes, we shamelessly attribute to the players, and the players alone. That trajectory of management failure is now likely to lead to the early exit of our team from the ICC World Cup of Cricket 2015. We will be asking what has to happen for us to jettison this culture of persistent failure in a form of the game where we are supposed to have a competitive advantage. An advantage based on our natural approach to the game. An approach which predates the commercialization of limited overs cricket. An approach not always accepted by the so-called regional cricket connoisseurs. Those who would want to be more English than the very English!
Over the last 24 hours both Ireland and Pakistan won their respective matches. Leaving the West Indies in fifth position and on 4 points after 5 matches โ€“ two wins and three losses. We are now above the UAE and Zimbabwe in the standings. Based on net run rate (NRR) there maybe some hope providing the West Indies could win their last match against the UAE and do so with a superlative NRR, thereby eclipsing Ireland, currently in the fourth position. Also we would have to depend on Ireland terribly losing their two (2) remaining matches against India and Pakistan. These odds appear, from the general performance of teams involved, to defy a reasonable judgment that this rare alignment of the stars will occur, but cricket is still supposed to be a game of ‘inglorious’ uncertainties…….Keep dreaming diehards!

The long odds that Ireland could lose both their remaining matches and in doing so fail to improve their NRR by more than 0.32 seem remote. We know that the armchair, not statisticians, but diehard (pundits) will have all kinds of permutations. These could include possibilities which are from remote to the intervention of some divine force to save the misguided management structure currently in place. Other will be motivated by who the current captain is. Which country he comes from. These petty loyalties have always militated against regional projects. To them it is alright to follow others and have international relationships, entanglements, traditions, but when it comes to regional unities there is to be a different standard. A mindset of insularity which belies otherwise reasonable stances.

We can’t say what has to happen to remove the collective scales from the eyes of Caribbean people. We have no idea what it would take to decapitate the leadership of the WICB(C) and other boards, either figurative or literally. We are at a lost why this pending humiliation will again be easily absorbed into the culture without the ultimate price being paid by the managements and directorates of all regional boards. We will never be able to comprehend how an abyssal failure, like this, a set of circumstances we saw coming, could be again papered over by the cricketing establishment. And why Caribbean people must continue financially supporting structures not of our making…..Like have happened in the past.

Those failures are well known and have been written about or discussed ad infinitum. They include, the recent debacle in India, the re-tweeting of comments derogatory of a senior player, the high-handed removal of senior players to prove political points, actions anathema to good governance, the elevation of a young but talented Jason Holder as captain primarily as an insult to other senior players. Certainly, any system run like this must fail. That we as Caribbean people cannot correct this maybe the best determination as to what/who we are as a people from this small region.

GP, I have no idea how well Roddy (formerly Waterford) or Hartley (Jason’s coach) would do with the test and ODI fellas.

It’s one thing to groom a wide-eyed and motivated school-boy, but very much different to getting wealthy young athletes keyed into the greater team good; and really even to their betterment.

Someone said that T20 has been the destruction of our cricket and that in its simple commentary rings very true: fellas now making good money for 4 overs bowling (at 6/7 runs per) and a dashing 30 off 10 balls. Awesome ain’t.

When the Englishmen used to say that about ODIs destroying our test teams. We laughed and beat them in three days to show exactly who was being destroyed by our ‘swiping’ and 75 overs/day fast bowlers.

But this time the joke is on us. We can’t get out of this predicament as easily as then.

Oh how Collis King, Emerson Trotman and all those fellas who went to SA on rebel tours must look at this era and say , ONLY IF.

    Indeed, Only If!

  3. West Indies cricket is over, BCCI will insist on there money and the ICC will give in to BCCI because India rules the ICC. Insularity and stupidity has caused the WICB to be in this position.

How can you tell a young promising cricketer to stay away from T20 cricket? Yes, both you and I and many test cricket diehards, still see test cricket through the eyes of the purists, but cricket is evolving beyond this type cricket and you must face that fact. Any young promising cricketer who ask my advice, I will tell him go for the T 20, not because it would be my choice but thast is where the money is will will be in the future. You must remember, when these guys reach 35 to 40 years they are considered old in cricket but they are still actually young men and have a lot of living to do, so make as much money out of the game now before they become cricket pensioners. Also some of these guys bypassed a university education to go after their cricketing career, must they now return to find a new career? I know it’s hard to accept, but test cricket is on its last leg, young people is not going to cricket to see two batsmen (now called batters) push and prod down the wicket all day in an effort to draw a game.

  7. Interesting report coming from reelected Cameron, a mandatory two franchise players from next season. To promote a regional approach. While this may not be a bad thing BU notes the report out of Jamaica after the original decision to back Garner was overturned by the general body which was very insular as far as not wanting Garner. The hypocrisy.

The objective of the franchise initiative is to soak up those players from islands producing more good players than others. For example, several players from Barbados have not been able to play regional cricket for the season while the Leewards struggle.

โ€œTONY COZIER IS A GROANER AND MOANER WITH NO SOLUTIONSHE IS ALSO MOANING AND GROANING BECAUSE WICBC WONT LET HIM GET ANY WORK. HE SAYS THE SAME THING EVERY WEEKโ€”OVER AND OVER. HE HAS NO VISIONโ€

Georgie, I agree with you 200%.

Tony Cozier favours the Bravo brothers, Samuels, Pollard, Ramdin, with his favourite being Gayle. In his opinion, these 6 players are the best thing since โ€œsliced breadโ€. He also seems to have an obsession with Gayle and if you read any of his Sunday Sun articles over the past 3 years, you will notice he includes some referral to that cricketer on a regular basis.

This is the same man who has been subtle in his criticism of Jason Holder, at 23, being appointed as captain of the one day team.

Ironically, about 4 years ago this same hypocrite, Cozier, wrote in one of his articles that the future of West Indies cricket lies with the younger players, and suggested the way forward would be to appoint Darren Bravo as captain.

Darren Bravo was born on February 6, 1989, which makes him 26 years old. Four years ago he would have been 22 years old. So whatโ€™s the difference, Cozier?

Cozier was always quick to critique Sammyโ€™s captaincy; however, he was just as quick to praise Dwayne Bravo, whose captaincy was abysmal.

And GP, itโ€™s about time the West Indies, as they did to Sarwan, say good bye to Samuels, Gayle, Sammy, Smith, Ramdin, Dwayne Bravo, Pollard and Fletcher.

Not sure how the WI Board are denying him work in a direct sense as he does not contract through them for his gigs but I appreciate there may be animus on their part which may have curtailed some revenue stream for him. So be that as it may be.

Yes, his rhetoric has been consistent over the years but it’s a bit much to suggest he says the same thing every week.

The man has provided ad nauseum recommendations from the Patterson group and all and sundry other committees ; recommendations from Rudi Webster; his own remarks going all the way back to when he edited the main cricket mag in the region.

No guys. What he has not written today or yesterday, he has said many moons ago and many times over.

And on the players. Cozier has criticized Gayle in the past (I recall well, he ripped him up and down when he was repeatedly getting out caught in the gully area several years ago).

And yes he likes him as a player and has certainly praised the man, too. I have also heard/read his praise of Sammy and definitely heard/read his criticism of him.

Over the years the man has written millions of words on WI cricket and surely he has had favorites and villains but I have always found his writing to be fair and showning excellent equanimity.

I have never perceived a racial tint in his written or verbal words and never heard anyone claim he was racist before GP’s remarks here so that was a surprise.

Love him or hate him but on merit TC has been balanced and very comprehensive with his reporting with all the players. That’s about all you can ask from a journalist.

David I am absolutely amused by the very inaccurate time warped perspective being to of one of the Caribbean’s foremost cricket scribe who has been doing his thing now for over 50 years.

To even suggest that throughout our careers we don’t have to chop and change and bite our tongue in order to move on to the next stage is rather interesting.

The only people who can do that are as GP says ‘Gold Spoon’ boys and girls; people who run their own businesses and don’t need to offer the services to those they cuss or could care less because their services are 100% needed or some other such scenario.

The 99% of people do not fit any of those categories. So we all lick somebody’s ass as some point to survive.

TC is definitely not the problem. If folks here want to bash the man then go ahead. But in the spirit of balance bring quotes of his words to support the outlandish claims though.

In life it’s always necessary to separate a person’s private ramblings from what they do in public unless of course those two behaviors show a hypocrisy.

GP seems to be suggesting that TC was a racial hypocrite. His public persona suggested he was not but if GP knows otherwise then that is a very important and profound story to be told.

โ€œLove him or hate him but on merit TC has been balanced and very comprehensive with his reporting with all the players. Thatโ€™s about all you can ask from a journalist.โ€

Yes, I agree he cannot be characterized as a racist, nor have I detected, as you put it, โ€œa racial tint in his written or verbal wordsโ€.

However, I have to disagree that (and in my view), Cozier has been consistently balanced in his opinions. Your referral to his criticism of Gayle can be interpreted as โ€œconstructive criticismโ€ of his favourite player, in an effort to point out his short-comings. His criticisms of other players are much harsher and structured in such a manner that makes it blatantly clear they are not his favourites.

But thatโ€™s the modus operandi of many of our Caribbean sports journalist. For example, Ezra Stuart was consistent in criticizing Darren Sammyโ€™s place in the WI team and his captaincy. Similar to most journalists, Stuart suggested Sammyโ€™s inclusion โ€œoff balancedโ€ the team.
After Sammy announced his retirement from the test cricket, this same Stuart, on โ€œMason & Guessโ€, expressed the view that if Sammy was interested in WI cricket, he should not have retired, but work on his game in an effort to return to the team.

After losing a test match or test series, the main โ€œpost mortem commentโ€ was, WI lost because the team was โ€œoff balancedโ€ due to Sammyโ€™s inclusion. However, it is interesting to note that the test team is now โ€œbalancedโ€ because Sammy is no longer member, and WI is still being soundly beaten.

  23. GP gave context to his respond Dee. Cozier has contributed to WI cricket, this cannot be denied.

those who directly affix their “LABIAE ORAE TO THE ADIPOSE TISSUE OVERLAYING ANYONEโ€™S GLUTEI MAXIMI”and

those who only approximate it as you alluded to; but in so doing gives the owner of said gluteus maximus enough of a euphoric feeling that it appears as if the labia orae is firmly affixed.

But seriously re Pakistan. They have a very solid bowling side. If someone whispers in Irfan’s ear that he could lead his team to be World Cup champions and he channels his inner Akram that kid will blow away the best of them.

Quick, with a devilish raising ball. With venom and accuracy he can easily pick up 3 or 4 wickets in his first spell. That can take teams to the top.

Ireland don’t have that. Their passion and dedication can be daunted with a blast from any of Dhawan, the other opener (name slips me now) or Kohli followed by their bowlers (who have kept all teams to date under 260 as memory serves).

Ireland going down — if India are motivated! In this type competition you DO NOT come off the accelerator. Winning is a habit to repeat as often as possible so they damn well better be motivated.

  40. Well, with a somewhat predictable victory over Ireland by India, the West Indies have dodged one bullet. But the peril of an early exit has not diminished significantly.

The real test is when the next shoe drops. We will now need for them (the Irish) to again loose to Pakistan, in their final match, and for the WI to win against the UAE, which is not expected to be insurmountable. The trick is for these scenarios to both play out in ways for the WI to maintain a better NRR than the Irish.

Ireland will reversing a negative NRR by more than 0.49 in one match, difficult.

Notwithstanding the glories of cricket and the fallibility of this team, we say the WI are odds on favourites to make the final 8, barely!

  41. while sanga is quietly hitting 4 consecutive hundreds our batsmen are getting out like………………i dont know what to call them

  42. @ GP,

We have those UAE boys on the back foot. Should we reach the quarter final we would have a one-in-eight chance of winning this tournament. You have to be in it to win it.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/cricket/31428106

  43. We are expecting a minor collapse in the top order and then a struggle to make these runs in 38 overs or less.

This te3am obviously has some problems. Failure of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th bowlers to deliver with accuracy means the UAE nade twice as many as they should have. Let’s see!

  44. Imagine what the standard of WI cricket has fallen to; the sweating of Wi cricket fans as they ponder if their undisciplined team, as demonstrated on the field so far, is capable of scoring 176 in 36.2 overs.
