  4. West Indies cricket

Last night’s defeat is the beginning of the end. Not the end of the beginning.

It shows a lack of ‘leadership’. The captain failed to adjust to changing circumstances, at critical points. The bowlers, including the captain, were undisciplined. This is the price we are to pay for the general and strategic failures of the Board. A Board which promoted a neophyte to a position before he was ready, properly prepared. Just to prove a political point, not to make a good cricketing decision or a good ‘leadership’ decision.

How is it that from around the 28th to 30th overs we could let De Villiers make 2.5 times the runs, as balls faced, posting a final score of 408. Maybe the highest, or one of the highest, in this form of the game. These are the times when a well prepared captain should be able to make a CRITICAL intervention. Holder clearly was ill-equipped. The times when a senior cadre, on the field, should have made a contribution to ‘leadership’. But no!

In the field, we had dug a hole sooooo deep the winner of the match was a fait accompli. An unfit Smith dropped Devilliers when he was just over 100. An ‘error’, the absence of which, could have limited the SA score to less than 320, still. This error ensured an unassailable score for the South Africans who have been beating us like school boys in recent and not so recent times.

But the brittle and quixotic nature of the batting reappeared after a stupendous performance against the ‘lower teared’ Zimbabweans. Only the captain made any significant score as the West Indies faltered and were finally dismissed for 151. A massive defeat. A defeat which could send them (us) packing in the first round.

Cricket is never played on a field. It is more properly played between the ears. When there are failures, the management, at all levels, as head, or head space, of the organism must take the blame. Their position should be judged based on performance, not at the WICB(C). We in the West Indies have not evolved systems to ‘cut off the heads’, pun intended, of failing organisms.

Unfortunately, the next shoe to drop, after a coming number of such failings, will be Jason Holder. For this is the only way an oligarchic Board can respond to its own failures. Period! There is a an unbalanced power relationship here.

We will be surprised if the West Indies could now progress to the next round. If we do not it will indeed be the beginning of the end, not the end of the beginning.
