Should C&W's acquisition of FLOW be stopped?
Should C&W’s acquisition of FLOW be stopped?

The battle for the number one spot in Barbados’ lucrative telecommunications market is back on. Former monopoly provider Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) today served notice that it will not ‘roll over’ and play dead while its main competitor Digicel  continues its expansion.” – Barbados Today 6 November 2014

They have billions to spend on buying out a company to obtain monopoly status, but they don’t have any money to spend on a Barbadian Call Centre which would stop people from  asking where well-known places and towns in Barbados are? We don’t need a juggernaut – especially when LIME is involved. That will bring us more headaches than when it held the monopoly before.

I find it despicable that Flow jumped into bed with LIME without even telling its workers. That’s not the way to treat workers!

The main problem here will be the number of people who will be fired, thereby putting more strain on the Government coffers, because many will claim unemployment benefits, and some will have to go cap-in-hand to the Welfare Department also. LIME is the one with the sour grapes because it lives up to its name as spelled out in its acronym. I think that the FTC should reject this proposed amalgamation!

This may be good for Venezuela, and other parts of the Caribbean as they already have a number of Internet Providers, and so there is already competition there. There would be no competition here – except Digicel. For Digicel to stand toe to toe with you it would have to find the same size shoes as you and Flow put together. It would have to be GARGANTUAN – and it cannot be if you are allowed to become the BEHEMOTH you want to be!

It would NOT be FAIR!

Under the headline “TOO SOUR  BLP FEARS INCREASES WITH LIME/FLOW MERGER” on the back page of Barbados TODAY dated 07 November, 2014, Kerrie Symmonds, Shadow Minister for Industry and Commerce, stated: “My own view about the Government of Barbados is that they have allowed LIME to flex its muscles in the marketplace for far too long without bringing them to the table and trying to make them accountable for certain minimal standards of development.”

Member of Parliament, Kerrie Symmonds has highlighted two valuable points here. This Government has allowed LIME to get away with too much. An example is the laying off of Barbadians when they closed the Call Centre here, and transferred it to St. Lucia or even some part of South of America. Kerrie Symmonds makes a very valid point when he mentions this.

It is untenable!

This tells me that LIME doesn’t care about the unemployment figures of this country, but this “people-centred” Government did nothing to reverse the situation. LIME’s customer service has not been very NISE at all, so we cannot reward it by letting it become a monopoly again. Also, what are those in the lower echelons of our society to do when they must pay for domestic calls? All this talk about being here for 100 years will not help us if they return to a monopoly status.

Does that mean because they have been here for so long that they should continue to rule the roost?  That was mostly in the colonial era. We are an independent nation now, and we will decide what to do and how it should be done if this Government gets its act together and stop letting it bully it!

Mr. Symmonds’ last statement: “But if LIME now has possession and domination of the market, then it follows logically that they are not likely to feel any pressure towards improving the after-sales service to the consumer.”

That sums it all up. I rest my case!

  1. What makes the author think our hand to mouth governments have the inclination or appetite to stop this deal?

  2. The faster Cable and Wireless is kicked out of Barbados, and replaced by a very responsible customer friendly telecommunications enterprise in this country, the better financially commercially technologically it will be for the broad masses and middle classes of people of this country.

These same people must really show this obnoxious anti-people Cable and Wireless, and any local traitorous accommodators of it, where to get to hell off.

All of that is stated with regard also to the fact that Digicel is another dastard blood sucking telecommunications organization as well.

Indeed, these kinds of despicable exploitative multinational corporations must be reined in in this country and in the wider Caribbean, and must be made subject to the fundamental national interests and wishes of the people from this region, or be made to leave the region once they are not compliant with the interests and wishes of those people.

  3. When Cable & Wireless in mid 2013 pulled out of the US market, and promised to concentrate on its Caribbean market, this was a forewarning which went unheeded. From a relatively small fish in the great lake of United States, Cable & Wireless’s aim was to become a ravenous shark in the Caribbean pond devouring the once lion fish entities of Lime , Flow and soon to be CBC, Carib Cable and Digicel.

So wait, did you not warn Kerrie that this is what privatization means? ….’bout international gangsters who come smiling and waving money around – and who then go on to show their true colours once established….?
you did not warn him that once established, they will treat Bajans like the cattle they think us to be…? (actually brass bowl cattle..)

So why the hell wunna think our forefathers SCRUNTED to acquire assets such as BARTEL, Shares in BL&P, BNB, etc? ….because they were awash with cash….?
    steupsss

C&W knows an island full of patsies when they see one….besides…
Wunna better get ready for the REAL shit when EMERA put on the big squeeze …..especially if Government refuses their bid to extend their exclusive license…
How much longer will those old engines run? where is all the investments they promised when they were taking over?

I will never forget the feeling when, as a boy, I was sprinting on a bicycle and the pedal slipped and I hit the testicles on the bar. That was almost like the feeling I got when I heard that Cable & Wireless is acquiring Flow.

I started to move my business from Lime, not only because of the bad service, but because of problems I was encountering when I was forced to call customer (dis)service. It would appear that they train the customer service agents to lie. I could not take it anymore and now they are going to screw me again and it seems that all I could do is buy the grease.

  6. LOL @ Caswell]
Excellent analogy of LIME’s customer service…

This shows EXACTLY what these people think of Bajans – that you can be forced to call some primary school educated clone in a Spanish-speaking country to complain that the shiite modem stops working when the rain falls in Arthur Seat….
You get so pissed trying to explain to the moron that this is a place and NOT a chair, that you just write down the twenty-digit reference number you are given and put the damn phone down… and try logging on to the neighbor’s wireless

  7. @Caswell

I could not take it anymore and now they are going to screw me again and it seems that all I could do is buy the grease.

This part of your last comment would be so funny if it were not a widely held view because of LIMES formerly C&W formerly Bartel’s rape of Barbadians..

  8. Maybe we can stop waiting on the powers that be and do something for ourselves…terminate our phone service for a period of time.
How about buying a few oil lamps and go tell the light and power to phuck off…we have the power people!

  9. @Whitehill
    we have the power people!
    …………………………………………..
But have we got the will?

  10. What if we started a rumor that Cable& wireless is owned by a black Barbadian…see how fast the will to keep him/her down is brought about.

  15. Is this the same company that advertised for a work permit for an Operations Efficiency Manager or some such position, due to not having any suitable applications?

With all the highly qualified persons here?

Or is it that the local is seen to not want to verbalise BS about caring blah, de blah, all the while firing people?

I wonder if one of the requirements for the job was BS expert?
And another, willing to fire at will?

Then, yes. It makes sense that there were no suitable local applicants.

Will be interesting to see if the work permit comes through.

I know what Barrow and Adams woulda said. And in no uncertain terms either.

  16. It should be obvious to all but the most ig’runt, that there is no regulator here, re monopolies, in food distribution and other, are allowed to flourish.

  17. What BU has been observing is that these two telecommunications players, and now FLOW, spend hundreds of thousands of dollars with local media. Why do we have to continue to pay for these big wigs rolls and butlers and holiday homes abroad? They won’t rest until they put the shackles back on. Cable and Wireless has made billions from the Caribbean and has the highest rates. They were losing business to Flow due to disgusting customer service and ridiculous rates. They have been a monopoly for years and now with some healthy competition they decided to buy over their competition making them again the lone wolf among the sheep

  30. The LIME-FLOW merger was in the works for sometime now. It was kept quietly away from the general public who knew nothing until it was a done deal, but it was certainly not a overnight happening.
That said, the way to control the likes of C&W/LIME in Barbados, is for the GOVERNMENT REGULATORS to define levels or tiers of service to customers and businesses and the respective pricing structures of these services. Without this type of input from governments, Barbadian and other, the fears of the public will become their fearful realities.
The FTC and Telecommunications Unit are going to have to start working now on the Legislative frameworks that protect customers from predatory practices, open markets, embrace competition, and monitor/regulate the telecommunications space in Barbados, so that it is of mutual benefit to all.
Time will tell, but this I know. When people feel squeezed, displaced and cant get what they pay for, they revolt, so good luck!

    Barbados Advocate – November 4, 2012

“When the telecommunications sector enters the third phase of the liberalisation process on February 21, Barbadians stand to reap significant benefits from the action. “this would enhance Barbados’ reputation as a jurisdiction for international business. “As the rates for international services decline, more international businesses should be attracted to Barbados, thereby spurring activity in the international business and financial services sector,” Anthony Wood said.”

“Boyce was very clear in his expectations .. “That means for our businesses I expect the opportunity to reduce cost to compete more effectively around the world.

  33. Bush Tea…
You mean that these particular sheep wont do anything but continue to feed happily from that type of a bowl?
Are you saying emphatically that we, the majority, will continue to be passive and happily ignorant to our impending plight?
Will any form of strong leadership emerge that such a sheep will refuse to be fed from the bowl set before them, and seek to find that green pasture where their nourishment is in their own hands/hooves?
I, very sadly, don’t doubt a word that you are saying. The few that can do something will probably be crushed by the dead weight of those who are passive till their demise.
Well, dunno what to say, but I guess that revolution has to come from Facebook or appear on their smartphones for them to get the message.
But wait, if LIME /C&W controls those devices, or access to those very resources, then it may never come..,
    Ah well..!

  34. @The Watcher

Here is something to chew on: Barbados has the highest Internet penetration in the Western Hemisphere. Barbados has one of the highest average device per person in the Western Hemisphere AND we (Barbadians) have not been able to leverage it go drive aggressive change, yet.

  35. Hopefully a new entrant will come along swiftly, to actually compete, now that there is effectively only one internet provider….again!!

  36. When all is said and done. The “end of the day/road/runaway” is visible in our rear view mirror of time. We will all agree that in this capitalist blood sucking materialistic world we all profess to want to live in – “lil Barbados” included. “Money Talks and Bull Shiite walks”. This LIME/FLOw deal was crafted between mega billionaires, whose sole interest is to become even bigger billionaries. Most of us will never see a billion dollars let alone know how to spend it. We as individuals and countries like Barbados will just be pawns on a chess board when you are dealing with multinational corps. The faster we internalise that; the quicker we would spend less time shouting and screaming at whoever is in close proximity, and start work towards creating capital(money) if we trully want to have a dog with a fighting chance in this game.
Our govt Blp Or DLP really dont have access to these deal makers. Each politician will make claims that it would not or cannot happen if they had the show running. But they never tell what else they would allow if they had the show running. They can all save their breath; what they are saying is sticlky for local consumption. The deal is done, we need to put our heads together so we can make the best of possible bad situation.

  37. @iidmax

Are you suggesting our Fair Trading Commission cannot stop this deal?

  38. Caswell Franklyn Avatar

    David

The Fair Trading Commission is a practical joke played on consumers to give them the impression that Government really cares about the interest of consumers outside of election time.

In my opinion, the last time the FTC was operating in the interest of the consumer Frank King was Chairman and Government went to Parliament and increased the size of the commission and appointed persons who were capable of out voting the independent minded members. You would remember that Ronald Toppin resigned as minister rather than revoke Frank King’s appointment around that time.

you is a pieceuhbushman or wuh?
….and if yuh seeing the ball like a breadfruit ..why the hell are we not hearing about BUP….?

  40. @ Bush Tea

    What is BUP?

  41. They say “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” likewise “you should not kiss and tell”. These mega deals are crafted way beyond our “lil Barbados”.
I honestly believe the FTC will put up a well crafted opposition to the pending merger. In the end they will be an accommodation. The PR machines which LIME uses so effectively will be unleashed. We will be bombarded will lots of unrelated facts that the PR technicians will interweave into a “narrative” making the unwise and inattentive portion of the society think the FTC did the best in trying conditions. In street cricketing jargon “we will yorked” “cat spraddled” or better yet “bamboozled” by a delivery from the new ball fast bowlers “Flow & Lime”.
They will take they time but in the end your “ass” will be caught, bowled, stumped; dismissed in some form or fashion. The resistance now eliminated, the feeding frenzy would begin, Maybe never to end?

C&W knows a well prepared tasty meal when it sees one. They have dined on us before, They will do it again if given the chance.

  42. Are we to conclude we have come full circle? After inviting competition through deregulation which saw the entry of Digicel, FLOW,Karib Cable the rebranding of C&W to LIME, where are we today?

We are being told a bigger LIME FLOW will mean greater efficiency more jobs, etc. No wonder Jenkins is always well patronized.

  43. LOL
The Lime CEO was laughing all over his face when he told the news how “economies of scale should result in customer savings…”
ha ha ha …Wahloss…every damn body have come to realize what jackasses we are…
BTW…what is this about EMERA putting up new lights at the Stadium? …is this in order to highlight the rust at night? …or is it in lieu of putting in new generating plant to ensure future reliability…?

    @ Anthony
BUP is the Barbados Underground Party (or more officially the Barbados Unity Party) which Caswell has been mandated to put together in our plan to implement the BU’s Ten Point Plan to save Barbados….

FLOW acquisition by LIME has hurt some Bajan white-boys badly. a white dynasty was being created with Director and manager being friends and herding contracts towards their companies.

The LIME acquisition will stop that. The technical director brother wanted to force FLOW to pay for domain names. That failed but little brother denied his brother like Peter denied Jesus and kept his posting.

Brought in his buddy and gave him a new SUV and started to build a dynasty. None of them have the skill sets to do the assigned jobs. LIME will not need them as the head man is a graphics artist and the other dabbles in small construction.

I am sure LIME will have talent on the ground to support technical operations. Some good comes out of everything. LIME must look into all of the signed contracts and see where they lead.
