November, I believe, will be the first litmus test month of whether or not any changes have been taking place over this year in the marketing of Barbados to indicate recovery of long stay visitor numbers to our shores. November 2013 recorded a total of 42,690 stay-over arrivals, which was the lowest for that month during the last 11 years. Three out of four major markets showed a decline, USA down 745, Canada down 49 and the UK down 56 persons.

2014 heralds the hosting of the fifth Barbados Food Wine and Rum Festival and by now there should be some effective way of measuring if this event has been growing sufficiently to ensure that the promotion funds ‘invested’ are producing a justifiable return on investment. Clearly overall arrival numbers do not indicate this, or if they are, then it’s to the detriment of other periods of the month.

From next month Delta Airlines return from Atlanta and will operate a new route from JFK/New York. These flights will provide an additional seating capacity of 640 passengers per week alone. Air Canada will shortly change aircraft type to B777 on the Toronto service which adds over 1,000 seats each week compared with the smaller A319.

Based on December 2013 arrivals figures (51,027 across all markets), the lowest for that month in eleven consecutive years we need to record a near 37 per cent increase solely out of North America during December 2014, if we stand any hope of filling those extra seats. And that is before we even look at any added capacity that JetBlue or WestJet may have scheduled and a third weekly Montreal flight.

It is a very ambitious objective based on recent past performance and perhaps all is being gambled on the re-opening of Sandals possibly in late January 2015, which could fill about one third of the expanded volume, if every one of their guests originate from Canada/ United States, and that simply is not going to happen.

Of course not every additional passenger will be a stay-over visitor, as you have to allow for visiting friends and relatives (VFR) and in-transit traffic travelling to neighbouring islands. You then have to think what the likely cost to the taxpayer will be for any un-sold seats, as I am sure the operating airlines will not carry losses for any sustained period.

What is the plan?

With no new national marketing initiative currently on the table, what is likely to generate higher numbers?

Since my first visit years ago when I spent a week driving around Greater Atlanta studying the demographics, I have always thought if we cannot entice 320 new visitors (two full B737-800 aircraft) a week out of a population of six million who live within an hour’s drive of Hartsfield airport, then we have a problem. And that’s ignoring the fact that it is presently the busiest airport in the world with unmatched connecting flight possibilities. Surely we have the collective promotional ability and expertise to ensure that this third attempt does not end again in failure!

Adrian Loveridge, BU’s resident expert on tourism can be counted upon to make trenchant and critical comments on the industry as all persons of such pretension can be expected to do. I have always held the view that a commentator’s views should be taken seriously only to the extent that they are clearly founded on workable alternatives. Otherwise they should be dismissed as the fundamental effusions of a “nattering nabob of negativity”, to use the words of a former CEO of a now defunct governmental promotional agency.

Much of Mr. Loveridge’s comments are couched in the framework of “what if” negative hypotheses, but does one have to be a cock-eyed optimist to see the effect of a positive outcome? Unless he is willing to display a mindset in which he willingly suspends disbelief he is unlikely to discovery anything positive in the initiatives which are currently being implemented in the tourism sector. I have no doubt that he loves the industry on which his bread and butter has depended, and that along with all those who wish our country well he will do whatever he can to ensure its future success. This is a time when confidence is everything!

Adrian’s eternal pessimism, to go with your assessment, can be compared to those at the tourism authority whose has been eternally optimistic.

    ++++++++++++
I’m sure the unnamed CEO would prefer if you gave credit to Spiro Agnew (former VP of the USA) who was the author of that phrase.

  4. Another example is the MoF defending Governor Worrell’s empty economic predictions. His excuse is that it is a forecast. Now you can’t have your cake and eat it by asking Barbadians to demonstrate confidence in the mouthings of the Governor.

“This is a time when confidence is everything!”

    Sure that, Mr. LCH!
When you are able to remove the piles of garbage on your streets and clean up your most important tourist entertainment site aka Oistins Bay gardens then and only then would the visitors reside any measure of confidence in your country.

Do you really feel confident that tourists would feel equally confident that their health and safety would not be put at risk while visiting a destination where the authorities refuse to tackle the deteriorating sanitation conditions that can give rise to the spread of dengue, Ckikungunya and possibly Ebola.

What we trying to say to you, Mr. Harper ,is that tourists feel most fearfully uncomfortable visiting a place that is full of filth and garbage. Take tour of Bridgetown and see for yourself what the visitors are up against.
but we might just be wrong about you. You might just find that kind of nasty filthy state of affairs appealing to your eyes and just like the PM and his Cabinet inured to such observations. Just a bunch of classless dirty bitches, you people are.

Yes continue to dismiss the vital importance of keeping your environment clean and hygienic and suffer the consequences when your tourism industry would go down the drain in the twinkling of a mosquito eye or with an outbreak of some epidemic.

“Chikungunya, the dreaded viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that has reached worrying proportions in this country, has forced top cyclist Darren Matthews to pull out of this month’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games slated for Mexico.

His father, David Matthews, told the DAILY NATION, that Darren had been hit with chikungunya a few days ago, and had been advised by his doctor to take two weeks off his bike.”

  10. Yes David it is ridiculous that Government does not deal aggressively with a massive Health crisis in Barbados.

Sooner or later a Chik V mosquito will visit a minister or some VIP. They have to step out of the SUV

Caricom heads are meeting tomorrow in T&T to ‘discuss’ public health issues, presumably Ebola and Chick V.

November 2, 2014: The 17th Special Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be held in Trinidad on Tuesday November 4, 2014, to discuss the global virus, Ebola, as well as the Chikungunya disease, which is affecting people within the Caribbean Community.

The meeting will be held at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, from 4 pm.

The primary purpose of the meeting is to review action being taken regarding the current challenging public health issues facing the CARICOM region, namely the Ebola and Chik V diseases, and to agree on a way forward.

In early September, the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, called for the special meeting of CARICOM to discuss the public health issues. This call was made even before the United Nations discussed the Ebola disease at its 62nd General Assembly Meeting in New York in late September.

  13. They expect us to believe they will run a bleeding edge, state of the art incineration plant without the usual, ” um brekdown las’ week an’ we still waitin fuh de parts to come in” and, “I ain’ know wuh wrong, but um like um ain’ wukkin today” type excuses that are not unfamiliar refrains to a Bajan’s ear, but they can’t organize 30 or so garbage trucks to pick up the garbage once a week on a regular schedule so it does not sit around in steaming, unsightly, smelly and unhealthy little mountains along the roadsides for days or even weeks at a time.

Yet the same myopic jackasses are rather efficient at importing the latest highest powered Mercedes Benz and BMWs to crawl on the donkey-cart makeover roads full of potholes wasting precious forex.

How can people calling themselves educated have their priorities so misplaced in this day and age? Don’t they understand that a nation’s wealth is the health of its citizens? What does this struggling country have going for it in terms of resources other than its people?

Bajans and their government will come only to ‘Christian’ understanding when there is an outbreak of some communicable disease at such an epidemic level that not only many people would fall severely ill and die off but also their precious foreign exchange earning sectors (tourism and international business) would say goodbye to infected Bim.

Yes continue to laugh at your West African brothers and sisters bragging about your free education yet practising the same dirty unhygienic habits and daily compromising your fast deteriorating public health services.

Why not check out Bermuda for lessons in keeping a small tourist oriented and international business dependent island clean and inviting to live and visit.

Hard ears this government would not hear hard ears the people will soon feel. A word to the wise is sufficient!

I suppose you relish the unsightly unhealthy state of public hygiene in Barbados; right up your own mental briar patch of intellectual garbage.

  18. Ever since this govt took office six years ago Adrien has been forecasting the demise of Barbados Tourism.not only have it survived despite all of Adrien,s downward forecasting and boulder peltting and limited cash flows govt has gone beyond and above ensuring the stabilty of the industry is strengthen by injecting cash and giving the industry the concessions across the board asked for .the fact that Adrien refused to see only negativity for the industry is an exhibition of a “political frustration”that should be ignored

  20. Miller what do you mean by “black lot” when the emphaise on”black”. now is it a crime to black ..u racist nasty minded bigoted negro..What a nerve your desperation has tossed u into a cesspool of race baiting..what uneed to clean up is the slime and bigoted flith emitting from your mouth negro.
And yes it seems as if Adrien belives that the more he predicts a nose dive for the tourism industry sooner or later it would happen.tell him his predictions are what motivates govt so keep them coming.however on the downside he would constanly be proven wrong.and to you miller u need to be injected with a lethal dose of reality creep

Is that the way in which the educated illiterate replies to a honest query these days? (I am not surprise at all) Now, I have six words I usually give to armchair- advocates like you yourself, to cure your garbage problem: voluntarism, personal- initative and independent-action.

  22. Never mind, Miller, this is the month to skin ya teeth look up in the air,its more attractive there ,and sing all of those patriotic songs, like Beautiful, Beautiful Barbados, We love Barbados .Perhaps during the month of November we should make it compulsory that all supermarket shopping bags, Kentucky and Chefette snack boxes should all be in the national colours, so when the ‘tourist-ize’ start to wonder we can always what looks like garbage is really part of our independence decorations.
Its a pity that two of my photos I posted as attachments , did not come through, and one shows an overflowing garbage bin inside the parliament gate, against a backdrop of flowing roof to ground independent decorations.

  23. Miller

Why do you think that it’s okay to sit around with your popbelly, and expect government to wipe your behind? It sound more like the entilement mentality, but only on the Bajan platter.

  24. Didn’t outgoing Chairman of the old BTA agree that entity fell way short promoting Barbados? Why can’t we intelligently debt issues? It begins with respecting the other view even if you disagree.

  28. Here is what outgoing Chairman Adrian Elcock had to say NOT Adrian Loveridge:

Change of attitude vital to taking forward our tourism

Added by Barbados Today on August 7, 2014.

    Saved under Editorial

It has been interesting to me to have heard all of [the] opinions during my three-year tenure at the BTA as the chairman of its board, and it has been even more interesting the vitriolic and muscular tone in which these opinions are shared, oft-times at the minister and the chairman in particular.

It led me to ask myself why this would be so? Why would an industry which has been described as one of the most important sectors be constantly derided and pilloried, rather than a united, patriotic stance taken to ensure that the interests of all are protected?

–– Outgoing chairman of the Barbados Tourism Authority, Adrian Elcock, as he addressed the annual general meeting of the Intimate Hotels Of Barbados group last week.

In his speech, Mr Elcock went further to knock the industry’s critics, including “media houses of recent ilk”, which he said seemed to thrive on sensationalism as the basis of a story.

The BTA chairman also singled out politicians –– no doubt on the Opposition side –– who he said were constantly engaged in a game of one-upmanship, as well as “industry partners, and hoteliers in particular, who recognized a long time ago that the more complaining they did, the more likely the Government of the day would buckle and provide concession after concession at a cost to the country that we cannot afford”.

Of course, I have heard of the Singapore model David. I have also heard of Singapore well documented judicial system as well. You don’t just go to prison in Singapore and serve your time. Colonel, you mentioned in an earlier thread that you spent some time in the Rhine Valley while serving in the Armed Forces.

Wouldn’t you agree it is one of the cleanest most picturesque places in the World? It is a well known UNESCO designated World Heritage site. It behooves me greatly to understand (boggles the mind) how Bridgetown could have been given a similar designation. Something has definitely gone awfully awry.

An de funnie ting bout it, Germany coulda get way wif anyting carring on he little persona of bein shellshock.

Colonel, wasn’t the battle of the Bulge fought in the Rehine Valley? Oh dear! Colonel you pushing 90? Do you know Germany from Bank Hall? 33. AC you posted that Adrian Loveridge has attacked this Govt since they were elected – but in all fairness he used to attack the previous Govt just as regularly, mind you in both cases there was plenty of ammo for him to use..

  34. Col. what you said makes sense but take it one step further, add 25 cents to every box, or bag for that month if you bring it back you get your money back if not the money made could be used to pay kids to pick up the ones strewn about,

I did not ever thinking to see you on the BU blog Lawson. You do remember that we had met on a previous blog, but not under the best of circumstances? But count it as water under the bridge Lawson.

  36. so what if he has attacked all govts, just to be critical does not say sh..te. if the govt had sat back and done nothing and let the industry collapse one could understand his attack but this morbid obscene obsession and daily diatribe, one of using a competitive stick to divide one sister nation against the other is sickening, nothing to do with criticism but an ongoing tirade of vindictiveness and borderline political abrasiveness,
This govt has done more for this sector putting millions of dollars in this sector than any other sector while all the other sectors have had to wait patiently to get the necessary funding needed including heath services which is a benefit to all and yes sanitation. you ever hear or read any articles from adrien pointing out the negative effects because of the lack of funding for these other sectors bearing in mind that they are all basically connected to tourism ,hell NO,,, he has one interest ! his first and foremost concern is to rehash and rewrite and back govt in a corner using a strategy of manipulation for govt to give all the financial support to the one sector he could not give two jobbys if the other sector are falling apart .., however he smart enough to know that the blp yardfowls would bray and belly ache about why the garbage and this not done ,like killing two birds with one stone,, if wunna want garbage pick up on a timely basis and bridgetown pristine clean. govt can take some funding from that sector ,and guess what wunna buddy Adrien would not like that,

World Heritage sites may lose their designation when the UNESCO World Heritage Committee determines that the designated site is not properly managed or protected. First, however, the committee would place a site it is concerned about on its list of World Heritage in Danger of losing their designation and attempt to negotiate with the local authorities to remedy the situation. If remediation fails, the committee then revokes its designation source Wikipedia

  39. @Miller. not only the Rhine Valley, but the whole of Germany is spotlessly clean. Passing through German villages , I would often wonder if people really lived in these villages,or were they show pieces.
But one think that was striking , especially in the North Rhine which was mainly “occupied” by the British, you knew when you were in a British community, although clean and tidy, these communities lack that German touch.

    Thanks David,
I do not necessarily disagree with Mr Elcock on this, BUT there has to be a plan if you are going to add 20,000 plus seats out of the USA in one year. 2013 recorded the lowest long stay visitor arrivals out of the USA for 11 years. When Sandals re-opens unless if adds to the current 280 rooms there will not be any additional airlift generated. Four Seasons, Hyatt (two 12 storey towers on Bay Street?) Sams Lord Westin and Beaches are all UP the road. When Gordon Seale is still waiting for concessions to re-brand/uplift the former Amaryllis and even if approval is granted tomorrow you are talking about late 2015 before it has any effect on airlift. I have not seen anything promoting the third attempt to sustain the Atlanta service with Delta. Their JFK flight will probably work because it is price competitive, but currently the fares on Atlanta are too high. In fact its cheaper to fly from from Atlanta to Barbados via Toronto.

  45. @Adrian

Isn’t the Sandals expectations built on Sandals marketing muscle driving national demand for beds in Barbados?

  46. Adrian Loveridge Avatar
    Adrian Loveridge

David, people book Sandals because they want Sandals. The new Sandals is going to be way ahead of almost every other hotel on Barbados because now they have to play catch-up after a years delay in granting similar (nowhere near the same) concessions. Also no-one else has asked the question, what proportion of Sandals earnings will actually come to Barbados? And Sandals are not charging VAT because the revenue is being collected offshore.

  47. This Sandals Hotel is a mess and it stinks.

Someone HIGH-UP is getting serious kickbacks from this project.
